Archicad Tutorial #99: Design Options in Archicad, Part 4 (Hotlinked Modules)
Design Options in conjunction with Modules open up all sorts of interesting possibilities in Archicad. ARCHICAD Tutorial #71: Shoegnome Open Template 23 Introduction (2020)
Do you have a trick for cleaning up beam end joins when using them as facia around roofs?
Yes. It's all about how the reference lines connect, or more importantly don't connect. One reference line might be at the outside face, the other at the inside face. Then I manually move one end to touch the other beam, but make sure the reference lines don't touch so that the beam ends don't merge.
What about when you need the casing and frame and sash parameters transferred from one window to another of a different type (like from a casement to a fixed)?
You can shift+click (eyedropper) between library parts in the window/door/object settings.
Hey Jared, my best decision was to watch this video to start my day, it just made me laugh so much. This is great, really fun and informative, keep it up! Cheers from the Graphisoft HQ :)
Thank you! Toilets are always the best example to use whenever possible. :)
Great! I think most elements are ok to remain in the same size as they were in imperial, so only changing the units and sheet sizes (maybe) is needed in most cases. Thank you!
Oh Man Thank you so much ^^
Really cool! Thanks a lot - that opens up a whole new world in the design process. With this method, it seems to be possible to create something similar to visibility states of block definitions in autocad. A feature that I've been missing for years in ArchiCad. Is there anything special to pay attention to in terms of schedules within the design options? I'm excited to try it out! Thanks again! 👍
Schedules are simple. They only look at what design options are visible. So there's really nothing special you need to do other than make sure you have the schedule set to the right design option combination. That's why I recommend in an earlier video to set all your views to a "proposed scheme" D.O. combo so that you can quickly update that D.O. combo and get all your views and schedules to display accordingly.
@@Shoegnome thank you! 🙂👍
You're welcome
is there a way to have multpile shelves and only one door? I notice that for every segment I make there is no way to just give the overall carcass one door
Set the segments to 1 to get just one overall door. Then under that segment, you should be able to set the number of shelves.
@@Shoegnome thanks so much that seriously helped me immensely
Hi Your Videos Is So Helpful I Have A question And I Hope You Answer Me when Generate An Elevation its keep generate the View Every Time I open it even if there is nothing update can you help me
You can set elevations, sections, and interior elevations to Manual rebuild Model. Similarly you can set any placed view on a Layout to manual instead of automatic update. In general you want to avoid this though. If the model is slow to rebuild when you open a view, check to see if there's some model elements slowing things down (complex geometry, excessive SEOs, bad objects). Often it's worth saving a copy of the file, deleting elements, and figuring out if it's just one or two bad items. It usually is.
Epic!! Love your work Jared. 👊🏻
Thank you!
Another great video. Very helpful demonstration of the issues associated with copy and paste between files. I think there are two types of people in the world: those that care about maintaining a clean listof attributes, and those that don't.
You mean those that care about maintaining a clean list of attributes and those that are wrong!!!
Ha! Yeah. or" those that care about maintaining clean attributes and those who cannot be trusted"!!@@Shoegnome
@andrewkleidon913 yes!!
How would you solve the eaves, when you have two different pitch on the hip roof and that you wish to have them at a specific overhang? Thanks!
That's a design problem, not an Archicad problem. The miter / geometry is what it is. Miter the two roofs, move the corner of the overhang to be equal distance at the corner of the building and then see what that does to the rest of your roof form. The miter won't be 45 degrees and won't cross the building line at the corner of the walls either. In general on old buildings with two roof slopes the overhang isn't equal or there's some other construction technique used to solve the problem. It's not one Archicad can make work on its own.
@@ShoegnomeThanks, I will explore your suggestion! Exact, this is for an existing building. Any chance you have a visual tutorial on the matter?
I don't. If you're matching an existing building then definitely start from the eave and work backwards. Figure out the fascia and then let the roof be what it needs to be. It'll be weirder than you expect.
Hello back, I was able to make it work. My ridge line was about 36.8deg for a 6:12 and 8:12 hip roof. I placed the reference line of the higher pitch roof to the new ridge line. The lower pitch roof (6:12) reference line stayed at the structure edge of the wall and simply mitered the roof planes to the other roof (8:12).
@@bividesignthat's great!
As always, thanks for leading the way and sharing your knowledge.
😄 you're welcome!
sorry if i missed it...are renovation filters independent of the design options? [ie, I can look at how Option k with Even More Toilets affects the Existing/Demo/New?] thx for your efforts in developing these vids!
Renovation filters/status work with design options. Any element on a design option can be new, existing, or demolition. But an element can only have one renovation status and be on one design option. So if you want Wall A to be existing in Option 1 and demolished in Option 2, then you need two Wall As.
Super Rad!!! That 80's lingo for you nailed it!!! All 4 videos are each helpful. Thanks again!!!
Glad you found them wicked helpful.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
this is a great series!!! thanks for making it clear!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
thanks for the video. very helpful. might i suggest doing another about what elements can't typically be linked to a Design Option but requires a slight workaround? you've mentioned the doors in the video. might do well to do the same thing with windows & the Opening Tool.
I'll add that to the list of bonus items to discuss in a future video, assuming there's enough stuff.
Amazing tool and thanks for the videos! Excited to start using it. I’m assuming that once you have your model view in the design option you want it’s possible to just save current view or save drawing and that will create a save layer and option state within that drawing to use on sheets? I think it’s going to take me some time to adjust to using design options instead of layers.
Design Options are an easy addition to your typical layer combinations. And yes, save current view will save whatever design options are visible. Though for views, I recommend making sure you are using a Design Option Combination rather than having that setting set to Custom.
@@Shoegnome ah I see, I’ll make sure to create a layer combination instead of custom. Thanks for the tips! I’m currently using it for my project but my program crashed twice after duplicating an option and trying to move one of the duplicated walls in the new option. Not sure why maybe just a glitch.
Update to the latest version of Archicad 27. There was a bug in the initial release that caused a crash when duplicating a Design Option that contained dimensions.
Ah! That’s exactly what was happening with the dimensions. I’ll try to update. Much appreciated.
Is there a way to have Design Options Combinations available to swap without opening the design options manager? It would be handy to quickly switch between combos.
You can switch between Design Option Combinations view the Quick Options Bar or Palette, by switching between saved Views, or (in my Work Environment) I have a drop-down that also allows me to switch between combos. If you want to turn on/off individual Options though, you either need to open Design Options Manager or click on what you want in the Design Option Palette. I tend to turn on/off the D.O. Palette with a keyboard shortcuts to change what's visible or use the quick options palette to switch between combos.
Impressive as always, thank you very much for this amazing content.
You're welcome!
I'm having an odd issue with favorites when importing. It's not importing the correct 2d fill type in. For example - millwork should have a "BACKGROUND" fill pattern. But, when it comes into my file it comes in as "AR-SAND". Actually many of the favorites come in with "AR-SAND" as the 2d fill type. Any thoughts on what that issue could be? I have checked the file that I'm importing from (which is your template) and it is correct with the "Background" fill. Is there some setting I dont have correct when importing favorites?
It's sounds like what's happening is the template you are importing to has different attribute numbers. So in my template Background is say fill #36, but in your template AR-SAND is fill #36. Archicad is prioritizing attribute number over name.
Yup. That's exactly the issue but, it's fixed now. Thank you very much. @@Shoegnome
so, the one thing i got from this new tool is that Design Options (DO) gives you another tool to toggle visibility for an entire group of elements without having to resort to adding more layers. you can keep the same layers turned on, use them & have them turned on/off in whatever view you need them. this is a great series. shame the next one is going to be the last. but if there'd be more interesting ways of using this tool, it'd be great if you can make more videos for it.
💯 correct about D.O. being a visibility tool. I'll definitely record more videos about Design Options in the future if/when I have more to say. I'm really glad you've been enjoying the series.
Does anybody else have an issue with archicad crashing when you duplicate a design option?
Update to the latest version of Archicad 27. That fixed a bug where duplicating a Design Option with dimensions crashed Archicad.
Thank you - the "proposed scheme" concept is brilliant. Random question - what are you using to mark up the screen during presentations (ie: blue marker to circle where the paddle boards would be)?
It's a small app called Presentify. It's maybe $5, allows me to hit Ctrl+A to start drawing over anywhere on the screen at any time, and is the best little app ever. I can't recommend it enough. It also has a cursor highlight feature which I rarely use. I'll scribble over the screen during a meeting then screenshot what I drew before hitting escape to make the drawings go away.
And yes, proposed scheme is an absolute must.
I've used that grid concept forever! :) It's OK when used in 2d but, when working in 3d it adds so much bloat to the model (and can cause other issues). Very helpful video. I've downloaded your 27 template and started to incorporate my template into it. It takes me a day or two to do it for each new release or Archicad. I wish there was a quicker way to combine them - kind of like an import favorites file. I've followed your video on how to incorporate new changes but, as the year goes on my file size get much larger. Especially because I usually just copy from one project to the next in lieu of updating a separate template file. This way all of the changes that I make are automatically incorporated into my next project. When you update the template to add the design options - is that something that is easy to transfer into an existing template?
When it's time to incorporate design options, it'll be quite fast just to create the ones you want and update the view map by selecting all the views at once and changing their d.o. combination to proposed scheme. One thing I don't mention in the videos is that when copying between files, elements bring their design option with them. So one way to populate a file with D.O. is to copy elements in..but that'd be slower and more of a hassle than spending 10 minutes to create them.
And totally agree. The grid with 3D gets so cumbersome, especially when you're trying to design multiple stories at once. That's the real game changer. Being able to shuffle between and compare/mix different schemes on different stories.
I haven't looked to see if there's any import/export feature for design options. I don't think so.
That makes sense. I'm going to mimic your setup in the video and use that in my first V27 template as a starting point. I want to start using Design Options ASAP. It will make my workflow much more fluid. Good to know about them bringing the DO name along with them. I'd guess there may be some issues with hidden objects or artifacts bringing that info along into new files - but, that will remain to be seen. Does this occur or cause issues with favorites as well? @@Shoegnome
No issues with favorites because design options aren't saved with favorites. I don't have all my standard design options set up yet, so we'll all be exploring for a version or two while we collectively figure out what are the right D.O. to have and use. I'm definitely still experimenting project to project.
2d lineworks' place is on a worksheet, at the right position (not far away in the floorplan) - it's a way more easier to use it with tracing. and actually, why using 2d linework, if you can adjust dimensions and do sketches right with the 3d elements themself. of course it's easy to make those lines to disappear with options...
I like the 2D linework as reference for as builts because there are often slight adjustments between the original measurements and the final model. So those static lines are the raw data. A 2D worksheet would definitely work just as well for storing the linework. Although with a Design Option, that information can live in its original location on every viewpoint and story.
How can I change the front and the countertop of the cabinet? (Like color, style, material…)
All those options are just settings within the objects. They are easy to change.
Extremely useful video. Looking forward to the follow up vids as well. This is a major improvement to Archicad and will work perfectly with my workflow. No more having to copy the entire model 500 feet apart to create various options.
Thank you. I'm super excited to share the next 3 videos.
@@Shoegnome do you knowing any issues of importing a v26 model into 27 and then using the design options?
@markrenz9381 I'm literally doing that right now! In fact I've almost exclusively worked on design options with projects migrated from 26 to 27. No issues other than needed to set them up from scratch.
@@Shoegnome awesome. Thank you.

I find that when I use a thin wall for linings it often wants to interact strangely with the main walls. Using a separate layer and changing the intersection number works.
Yes. If you do layered walls like this you always need to use separate layers with different intersection group numbers. Otherwise it'll be a mess.
why does the toolbar at the top not show up after I add the shoegnome work environment?
Make sure you are applying the work environment in addition to loading it. And if you want Archicad to remember it, set the work environment as your default.

Hello, Thanks for the video. I'm struggling with creating a schedule for the materials used in the project (materials legend) for my layout. Hope that you can help me, sir. Thanks
There's too many unknowns for me to know what you need, but often to create a materials legend I just fake it with filles/composites/etc on a hidden layer or worksheet. In 27, I'd probably do a design option for legends so that everything can be modeled and hidden. But that explanation will have to wait for a future video.
For existing doors, what I do, is showing them at 45 degrees opening instead of 90. Much easier :)
A lot of people do that. It's actually harder though. Once the graphic override is set it's automatic and works forever. And you don't have to worry about fringe cases where you need to show doors at weird angles. Also door swings can be accidentally changed by coworkers.

thank you! can't wait to try it out.
Great video thanks! I always shy away from GDL, but this is doable.
Thank you. I felt the same way for a long time. Once you start dabbling at the edges of object creation, simple GDL suddenly becomes much less scary.
Thanks! Super helpful!
Thank you so much. You're the best! Glad you liked the video.
gdl and gsm...😊
NICE!!!👍
Thank you!
i love your daughter's little edit touches... very adorable. it might also be prudent to suggest to NOT do this process in the active file of whatever project one is in. this avoids bringing in unwanted attributes. yes, you can do the cleanup during the process, but it always helps to have total separation. the same thing we do when we want to bring in an external 2D detail or from an old project with old templates/attributes.
I'll let Madeleine know. And you are absolutely correct. Object creation needs to happen in a clean version of your template and not in an active file. I should have mentioned that! It's important for preventing attribute pollution and also making sure your Objects are built in alignment with your template.
this is excellent and and esssential for Archicad users
Completely agree. I have a few other simple Object making video ideas brewing. Hoping to record one more by the end of the year.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks!
Thanks!
Thank you so much Gerald. You're the best.
So useful! Thank you, Jared!
Thanks!
The most holistic approach I have come across regarding terrain and mesh out there. Took me a while to find it, thanks for this!
You're welcome!
so the morph is just to get the image same scale?
The morph is so you can properly set the origin point of the Surface correctly in 3D. You could really do it with any tool, as long as you can locate the proper corner of the image you are using in 3D.
I noticed in this video that you have a zip file. I downloaded the template but the zip file is not included. As you stated there is no application I can use to open and use the tpl file., therefore I can not use this template. Please let me know if you have instructions on how to add the file without the zip folder. Thank you.
The zip file is for the work environment (which needs to be downloaded separately). The TPL is the template file. To open it, right click on the file and select Archicad or open Archicad and browse for the template file when you click the "New..." button just as I show in the video.
Thank you. Where can I find the zip file on Shoenhome?
@@mancinidesignbuild Links to all my Work Environments can be found here: www.shoegnome.com/work-environment/ The Zip file is the Work Environment referenced in the video.
