Archicad Tutorial #90: Existing Door and Window Display

  • For the longest time I've had to manually manage the display of existing door leafs to be gray rather than in color. This isn't an issue for people who don't do color drawings. I've mentioned this problem to GRAPHISOFT, but it's clearly not on the top of their list (or mine). Please, GRAPHISOFT, fix my cabinet wishes!!! In this video I show why Archicad displays existing doors wrong (if you use color) and how I fixed it with Graphic Overrides. In the video, I discover an issue which I have subsequently fixed in my template.
The original blog post this video is here:

This video was created using the Shoegnome Open Template and the Shoegnome Work Environment for Archicad 26. Links below:

As always the template and work environment are free; a good Archicad template (and work environment) is too important to horde. If you want to click the PayPal button on the template or work environment pages to support my endeavors and encourage future development, that's wonderful. Whenever people do that, it makes my day.

For existing doors, what I do, is showing them at 45 degrees opening instead of 90. Much easier :)

A lot of people do that. It's actually harder though. Once the graphic override is set it's automatic and works forever. And you don't have to worry about fringe cases where you need to show doors at weird angles. Also door swings can be accidentally changed by coworkers.

Hey there! Your content is great. I am currently facing an issue and I am wondering if you could give me some advice on how to create a concrete masonry unit as a wall in 3D space. I need to have all the necessary details, such as the block, mortar, and so on, and I would like to see it in section views. It can be quite tedious to create all the detail sections manually in 2D. Do you have any experience with this? I would be interested in hearing your thoughts. Thank you for the great content, and keep up the good work!

CMU walls are tricky. You can use a complex profile wall to get it perfect in section, but it won't be what you want in plan (IE, it won't show the cores or the individual blocks). AFAIK there's no perfect solution to get it to look right in plan and section. But if section and 3D/elevation is what matters then a complex profile wall with a good surface texture properly aligned to the coursing you want is the best solution.

If it needs to be perfect, you would need to model each block separately or look for a 3rd party solution (if one exists). Oh maybe the curtain wall could be hijacked to create the perfect CMU wall, but I don't know if that's possible.

@shoegnome When you send permit docs to a GC, are you sending color? Or expecting sets on site to be printed in color? Every time I ask for grayscale printing near me, it gets delivered super dark & seems to obviate using grayscale at all (and color printing seems pretty exhorbitant for full size sets.) Why not have existing doors at 45deg (or simple/single line?) for a visual difference?

I've been doing color drawings for almost a decade now. Never had an issue. Half my contractors print in color, half don't. The color drawings print fine in grayscale.
As for 45 degrees or simple line, I don't think that's clear enough, it's not automated like this solution is now, and sometimes I need to show new doors at weird angles.

That kind of inconsistencies are a fu%$&#@ pain in the a$$. Cover fills instead of cut fills in the leaf of the door..... It makes me go nuts. There are hundreds of issues like this. And nobody in Graphisoft realizes this has to be fixed ASAP. It kills my joy of the software, my productivity and my sanity.

Agreed. It's super frustrating. And that's why every little fix like this makes me very happy (whether it's GRAPHISOFT or me making the change). It seems minor, but this template improvement will save me a few minutes on every project. One more win for automated beauty.
