Disney DIDN'T Ruin the MCU... the Audience Just Has ADHD?!

  • According to the Russo Brothers, there is no "superhero fatigue" ... the audience just has ADHD. No, seriously, that's what they said. I somewhat agree -- the public isn't sick of GOOD Marvel movies, just the CRAP that Disney has been peddling since Endgame.

TLDR: The decline in interest in Marvel movies is not due to superhero fatigue, but rather a generational divide in how media is consumed and the type of content being produced.
00:00 Superhero movies aren't failing due to fatigue, but rather a generational divide according to the Russo brothers, with most recent superhero movies being massive failures financially.
00:52 Marvel's current direction is not good, and it took years for mainstream media to admit it, but the hope is that the Deadpool movie will bring about a major course correction.
01:54 OG Avengers don't need to be replaced, Disney Plus shows and movies have been criticized, and the Russo Brothers believe Marvel's recent problems are due to a generational divide in media consumption.
02:47 Marvel's recent struggles are due to changes in how people consume media, not superhero fatigue, and it's a Hollywood-wide issue.
03:29 The audience's shift towards instant gratification and multitasking is impacting the way they consume media, including the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
04:54 People are not showing up for Marvel movies because the content is not worth their time, and the Russo Brothers are blaming it on the audience having ADHD.
06:00 The structure of movies is over a century old and the next generation is looking for ways to tell their own stories that cater to their collective ADHD.
06:42 Superhero fatigue is not a real issue, as demonstrated by the success of long and dry movies like "Dune" and "Oppenheimer," and the audience will show up for good movies regardless of length.

And it will be the same quality and you will be more comfortable watching it at home. There is very little impetus to run to the theater anymore. They hired writers that lacked understanding of genre, and story fundamentals in favor of agenda.”

    • @pietrayday9915
      @pietrayday9915 Před 18 dny

That right there is the perfect summary of the problem,as I see it: “They hired writers that lacked understanding of genre, and story fundamentals in favor of agenda.”
That's more or less exactly the same thing I said about the problem with Doctor Who the last few years: the biggest problems with Doctor Who aren't that the character is being played by a woman or a black gay guy or whatever, the show had begun to fall apart at least as far back as white guy Peter Capaldi's run as the Doctor, and I thought Capaldi was more like a traditional '80s Doctor Who than any of the "New Who" actors before him, and that he was terribly under-appreciated as an actor in that role. Good writers could compensate for a mediocre or even bad cast. Genre audience can typically forgive a lot of production and budget problems, and changes to the lore, and weaknesses in the acting or the writers' knowledge of Doctor Who canon and so on.
The problem wit Doctor Who has been that the writers and show-runners lacked an understanding of what made Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror work, they didn't understand any story fundamentals, the only thing they showed any talent, skill, and interest in was agenda.
Pretty much NOBODY ever tuned in to Doctor Who for agenda! And pretty much NOBODY tunes in to comic book movies for agenda. They're tuning in to see an hour and a half or so of escapism riding on a solid foundation of story fundamentals decorated in at least a moderately competent grasp on the superhero genre, perhaps mixed in varying amounts with elements from action, adventure, fantasy, science fiction, horror, western, detective, and/or other superhero-adjacent genres. And if the audience aren't getting that bare minimum from these movies but are instead being baited-and-switched with half-baked drivel starring an agenda dressed in tights, then what kind of audience wants to pay to do that over and over?
ADHD? Nah, baby - NO amount of attention span is going to keep us glued to our seats for up to three hours or more of lazy, by-the-numbers blockbuster formula awkwardly shaped to fit agenda with only the barest nod to genre and story, no matter how many CGI explosions and stunning and brave strong female characters, gay black zimzers of colour, and even guys dressed in familiar masks, tights, and capes have been jammed into it.
I'm reminded of the '80s G.I. Joe cartoons: the show-runners were forced to insert an "educational" agenda into what was, at its heart, an advertisement for toys dressed up pretty convincingly as a pulp comic action hero show... that's TWO agendas to be crammed into one half-hour cartoon show, as the toy marketing was indeed an agenda as well! Yet, it somehow worked out for G.I. Joe. Why? Because the writers actually understood the genre, and could tell a damned story at least half the time, so the show could actually survive on its own merits in spite of the toy advertising agenda, which was pushed into the background enough that almost nobody would notice that it's a toy advertisement today if the toys weren't so famous. And the "educational" agenda? The writers and show-runners cleverly pushed that into a two-minute segment at the end of the show where the characters break character long enough to tell you not to litter or play with matches or juggle chainsaws without an audience of laughing adults or whatever the lesson-of-the-week was. The "educational" PSAs are popular fodder for jokes today, but the main part of the show still stands up pretty well today as somewhat juvenile pulp action entertainment, and audiences forgive the short, inoffensive PSAs today.
And THAT is a lesson that Hollywood could learn from the Joes: learn the fundamentals of telling a good pulp story and then focus on telling your audience a half-decent story first, while pushing any agenda you're forced to work with unobtrusively into the background wherever possible; and if you can't put the agenda in the background, at least keep it short and keep isolated from the main story so it doesn't break suspension of disbelief! Now you know, and knowing is half the battle! Thanks, Duke!

I watched Ghostbusters 2016 after the hype and backlash died down and found it mostly harmless, and even mostly enjoyed it. BUT I'm never going to be able to convince anyone who "noped" out of it to give it a second chance.
And that's because they refused to give it a chance on principle. And I can't argue with that. Why shouldn't they refuse on principle, when the studio, director, producers, and cast made a point of insulting them when they didn't have to?
It's a bed that the Ghostbusters 2016 team made for themselves, and it's a bed they will have to sleep in now. All because the Ghostbusters 2016 team couldn't handle a little audience rejection with modesty, grace and class.
How hard would it have been for the Ghostbusters 2016 cast and staff to have avoided insults, and simply said something like this?
"We really regret that we haven't been found the audience for this movie. Sure, we tried something a little different here from what audiences expected, and we know the original Ghostbusters - a movie we love and respect- was an incredibly tough act to follow, but Ghostbusters 2016 is a project we really believe in, a movie we put our best efforts into, and a film we really hoped that moviegoers would enjoy watching as much as we enjoyed making it. Maybe we missed the target on making a worthy homage to the original film, but we believe we made a fun family movie anyway, and still hope that moviegoers would reconsider the choice to stay home, and give us a second chance in theaters this weekend!"
Sure, it wouldn't convince any die-hard "never-Ghostbuster2016-ers" to change their minds, but I think a lot of viewers who rejected the movie on principle largely because of the insults might have been persuaded to try the movie later, if only the Ghostbusters 2016 folks had swallowed the temptation to insult and instead just shown a little restraint and respect for even a hostile audience....
I for one would have been a lot more sympathetic to the Ghostbusters 2016 folks' plight today if they had treated their critics better!
