- Paramount is for sale, but who is buying? Skydance seemed to nope out, but Sony might scoop it up. The CEO jumped ship, the stock is plummeting and Warren Buffett pulled all of Berkshire Hathaway's stake out of the ailing Hollywood legacy studio. I guess Star Trek wasn't enough to save it...

They ran Star Trek into the ground; what did they expect? 🤦♀️
And Twilight Zone.
This is the power of Science!
They expected the "modern audience" to save them. Turns out the modern audience was just us all along. Huh.🤷♂
Yep
kurtzman trek is abysmal
Paramount has been chasing IP after IP and is not coming up with anything new. Disney is learning the same lesson slowly. Buying other people's crap will only get you so far.
So in your opinion pre streaming buyouts IPs like Star Wars, Star Trek, Marvel, DC were garbage? Not that they were ruined by modern day politics after they were bought. You need to reword this or just delete it cause you really missed the mark!
@@headp3 Ease off the assumptions, bud. Two things can be true at once. They are money-holing themselves by buying IP. They are exacerbating the problem by hiring activists and not people who want to create a product people actually want to invest their time and money into.
It has nothing to do with chasing IPs. it's about taking an IP and then pushing an ideological view that was never part of that IP.
Star Wars was golden, then KK pushed the force is female and killed an IP.
Star trek, doctor who Marvel. All pushed a female first men second ideological view, and each died.
@@headp3You're taking their use of "crap* too literally.
@@headp3 Honestly, I think the problem with those pre streamwars buys were that the company buying them didn't really knew how to use those IPs. It still worked fine for a while with Marval since Perlmutter had a plan and Disney decided to keep following that, unlike what they did with Lucas Star wars plan. As soon as the plan ended with Endgame though, Disney had no idea what to do with the IP.
If you buy an IP and know what it's fans want, you can keep doing that and earn money. If you either don't know, or worse decides to ignore it things end badly.
A famous IP is worth it's money because it gives you a large fanbase. They screwed that up.
So I agree with you that buying the IPs could have been worthwhile if they were able to utilize the IP correctly. But I think most of those IPs would have been better off if they just left them and made something themselves instead.
The streaming wars is another problem even if it did help screwing over IPs like Star wars and Marvel even more. Creating tons of "exclusive" content for the streaming platforms devolved the IPs even further but they would have bombed eventually anyways.
The real problem though is that Hollywood have stopped trying to figure out what people want to actually watch. "The "you will watch this and enjoy it" attitude doesn't really work and they seem totally unable to figure that out even if they used to know that.
Star Trek wasn't enough to save Paramount? Folks, what Paramount did to Star Trek with the incredibly childish, agenda-laced disaster that was ST Discovery is one of the reasons WHY Paramount is going down the drain. This will continue with every production company that is infested with woke employees. As long as the writers, actors, producers and directors are still virtue-signaling and trying to enforce false diversity, feminism and other forms of social/political engineering, the ships will continue sinking. If Amazon wasn't propped up by it's near throttle-hold on shipping, it would have already sank from disasters such as the Rings of Power. Same for Disney. If not for their parks, they would have folded by now. Until production companies are willing to purge themselves of "slacktivists" that spend more time on social media than their actual jobs, they will continue to fail.
Paramount is really want Star Trek to complete with Star Wars.
Damn right. Well said. I think that does a good job of summing it up. I will just add, "It is much easier to fool a man than convince them that they were fooled." The problem is the people, not the IP. They have to admit out loud finally, as a company (any company), that woke-ism is cancer and they were all tricked. They need to put the qualified people back in charge and fire anybody who is as an activist. The purpose of a company is to make money, it can't also be the place to push propaganda. The two are incompatible. All and I mean all of these CEO's that succumb to this should be fired and any Board of Directors of companies with this mentality should be sued and criminally prosecuted for a violation of their fiduciary duty to make money for their investors. It is fraud plain and simple. Same goes for government employees who just decide not to do their job the way it's intended. It's fraud. Enough people.
Paramount has been not Paramount since Viacom (Sumner Redstone) bought it from Gulf/Western in 1994. It was a slow decline ever since.
Robert Kirkman didn't find his audience he was looking for
The Mouse has hands in almost too many jars to fail. The merchandise alone is more revenue than the parks. Think of all the branding deals; Huggies diapers and the Pull-ups training pants (diapers in disguise) must be very profitable.
Given how badly they ruined the Halo franchise? This doesn’t shock me in the slightest since they butchered one of my all time favorite video game franchises.
what's crazy is the Knuckles series was great even if Tails and Sonic were only in the first episode
I saw 2 secs of that s***show and couldn't bear to watch more it was that bad
@Ladywizard I just wish they had more Knuckles and the Villan was a bit lame
Hear hear.
@@AuthorPDKaiser dude they are just as guilty with the DEI garbage. SBI are so ingrained into that company it's pathetic.
Paramount should have been massively stable over the last few years. They had evergreen franchises and several IPs that they were bringing back for great acclaim.
And yet, they proceeded to completely F(YAY!)K everything up...and all for an Agenda that they should have never embraced.
You mean lectures on gender ideology and having Stacey Abrams on didn’t save Star Trek?!
At least her character got elected to a position on the show.
A long time friend who is a HUGE Star Trek nerd from way back in the day told me that all the new Trek stuff is some of his favorite Trek. He said he even LOVED the weird dancing/singing episode. I feel like I don't even know him anymore.
I think I know people like this... it's awful
You should be happy for your friend that they have something they enjoy. At the same time it doesn't mean you have to like it. The market will decide which of you is correct about the quality of new-trek.
@@Akm72 Real Friends don't let friends enjoy Nu-Trek.
Did he fall and hit his head before discovery came out?
@@MedalionDS9 Funny, but if his friend is happy and dumb, let him stay happy!
Who knew that the industry wide push to not only greenlight tons of bad shows, but to also vilify your audience for calling you out about it, would be a bad marketing tactic
Get Woke Go Broke.....
Military fiction writer John Ringo said it best in 2018.
I mean most of the ads I saw for Paramount Plus were for Drag Race or Pickard...neither of which would make me touch this streaming service with a 49 1/2 foot pole.
If you use the word woke in a negative connotation you can be considered racist standard the word has been used by black Americans since the 1920s in a positive manner is 4 to 5 years. Be using it in a negative condensation
@@rkelly63 Umm positive or negative... the word is the associated with insane failure. If truth is racist now (hey Orwell's on line 2) then someone get some swastis or a hood. The absurdity of your gaslight comment/defense is truly pathetic. Thanks to sentiments from people like yourself the word "racist" is quickly having no value/meaning aka if everyone is racist then no one is racist. Purity spiral into the ground much?..... Just asking for a friend..... LOL
To clarify MGM got broken up into 3 pieces Amazon, WBD, and Goldwyn and this is what I have been saying could happen if studios did not focus on making profit and now we are seeing it happen. Paramount is a mess to start with. They went Woke on pretty much on everything and it has even affected Star Trek. This will not be the last to have this happen.
I think WB is next. They are massively in dept and have nothing outside entertainment. After that, I would bet my money on Sony. They are mostly propped up right now by PlayStation and anime. And they are tanking the former.
@@shadowspider9@shadowspider9 No, WB is not next, and I will explain; when Discovery got WB, they took 70 billion in debt from ATT; in 2 years, they have gotten the debt down to 43 billion, and WBD stands with over 2.5 billion in cash on hand the most of any studio. They are in better shape than most know. I get the FDIC filings anytime WBD does anything due to my being one of the Shareholders. Now I am not saying things cant be a whole lot better for WBD but they are not that bad. This Friday, we should get the reports from the quarter, which looks good except for the comic company failure.
Paramount Channel is a joke. All they play is Bar Rescue for most of the day
I noticed that, too. There's been a few times when I saw something different on Paramount Network, but it doesn't happen often.
That's because bar rescue is crazy cheap. These studios need to embrace budgets
If they're gonna play one show they could have at least picked a good one. Bar Rescue is AWEFUL,
Bar Yelling
All of the Viacom networks are like that
“The wages of woke is broke!” - H. Cthulhu
Get woke
Go broke
Become a joke!
Mismanagement, greenlighting stupid projects/shows and chasing streaming. Wonder who'll be next
Star Trek Discovery didn't save Paramount? Oh no! Anyway...
Haven't watched an episode of STD, SNW, or LD.
None of these companies are run by people who care about their companies. They didn't build them, they often didn't even work for them before getting hired as top executives. They have no depth of feeling for the company or its IP.
Expecting people who don't care to make good decisions is an invitation to disappointment.
If Sony buys Paramount... That will just be hilarious... It'll still be shite, just a whole new level of shite... What is happening to the world? LOL... All these amazing Franchises etc. just Dumpster Fires... Star Wars, Marvel, Star Trek, Halo, etc. IT'S NOT HARD TO SUCCEED WITH THESE!!! Incompetence at it's highest... Take notes friends...
And make popcorn. Lots and lots of popcorn.
We need more indie studios that aren’t reliant on big companies/corporates.
Everything has turned to crap. The consumer has no power because it's all based on Wall Street. Wall Street would rather sell everything than make anything.
What's happening to the world is that some very rich people (like Blackrock CEO and WEF luminary Larry Fink) got the idea that they need to 'force our behaviors'. So they shove their garbage message down our throats at every opportunity, and a great way to do that is through television, movies, and games. That's why all three are now turning out so much garbage: those who would be our eternal rulers demand it.
So it's not like they don't know they are producing sh*te, they know very well. But when Larry Fink, who controls more money than the GDP of any country that's not the USA or China, calls and tells you to push his Message, you do it.
@@mrconroy4672 Agreed. However, successful Indie Studios become Major Ones like Lucas Film. I wish George never sold Star Wars...
Remember the 1960s and 1970s the original studios all went belly up but Disney, which had a hostile take over in the 1980s. Paramount was bought and owned by Gulf oil and Warner got sold repeatedly and hasn't stopped, same for MGM, Universal and the rest, so this is not new.
Well, if they hadn't gone woke, they wouldn't be going broke.
At this rate, Hollywood is going to be either so bloated from buying up each other they'll fall down harder or so fragmented they won't know where one studio ends and another begins.
I'm honestly not surprised, they have great shows...but people HATED paying for cable, all of these separate subscriptions is basically CABLE again...That's why after the first year or 2 people stopped paying for multiple subscriptions for one or two shows.
Cultural iconoclasm and heavy doses of 'the message' in every project have made other shows which should have printed money like Star Trek into burning money pits. Streaming greed is just a terrible cherry on top. They've also completely flaked on the promise of streaming from 12+ years ago which was that these studios would digitize their back catalogs. They never seem to have bothered with that.
@@RN1441 yeah. A shame.
Let's be fair here, everything is on fire in a land fill.
It went beyond dumpster a long time ago.
I dropped all my streaming services and have no cable. Honestly don’t miss them.
You're right about that there could be only one Media Corporation running all Audio, Visual and Printed content. It'll be called The Ministry of Truth.
It's self inflicted wound - doubling down on Abrams/Kurtzman Trek is one of the reason for this sorry state of afairs.
Star trek has always been political, but old trek remembered the story had to come first.
It's always been progressive but not woke until now, there's a difference
It was never forced and it let the viewer have his own thoughts on the situation. Also the difficult situations were shown in other alien's culture from an utopian "enlightened" humankind's eye, where they basically said "yeah we had this problem long time ago, but we grew it out, solved it".
@@darmok3420 You don't know the meaning of woke so don't use it. And speaking as an outsider, USA is dying, period. Whites aren't having babies at all due to your own inferior genes and bad food culture. Disney catering to black and brown people is a long term strategy, nothing to do with wokeness. They just went about it weird and all at once
What is the difference?
@Overlord10ca it wasn't an idea thrust upon the viewer. It ether was just the norm in place, or it was a thing on a different planet. If it was the point of an episode, it was approached as a story looking at all points of the topic. To build the story, making it convincing as part of the world. And when the end came, it was not the only correct answer, but the best one available, or just what had to be done, but other options could have been better.it never push that this is the moral high ground, but every thing can be better. Alway hopeful.
Std is one of the things that help to bring paramount to its current state, expecting STD to save paramount is optimism of the highest order.
Their greed was their undoing but most of all, karma to those who gaslight everyone.
Hard offline copies are already in demand as censorship can never retroactively change what was already on disc and VHS.
Most likely going to get used copies when I can. Hollyweird died in 2010-2012 and I can’t wait for indie studios to put out better original content
Hey LuigiTheMetal64 how screw hasbro is without paramount?
@@SaukraMita very little. Hasbro can always find someone else.
The history here is dizzying. Paramount is formerly ViacomCBS, which was formerly CBS, which was formerly Westinghouse. If you can still find lighting or electronics branded Westinghouse, that name is being licensed from some legal office at Paramount.
Paramount have been copying Disney or to be exact, trying to be Bob Iger, naively thinking that Bob Iger knew what he was doing with regards to streaming business. And it turns out that Bob Iger know nothing about streaming and just winging it while at the same time trying to use Disney as his political platform which is a very bad move on both fronts, business and politics. Disney without the theme parks would have gone bankrupt years ago and Paramount going bankrupt now is what Disney would be without its theme parks. 🤷♂️
I worked at one of the Paramount parks before they sold them off in the mid-2000s. I wonder what would have happened if they didnt divest and actually understood what to do with a park in the long term...
And remember Paramount and Disney made a movie together called “Popeye” with Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall, and that was from 1980.
This is just history repeating itself as the majors are in the same position they were in the late 60's when the real old studio system collapsed.
Problem is that they can't count on young talented filmmakers to make culturally relevant films on small budgets that will make profits they way they did back then.
Then you had the 90's indie film scene which didn't last long as those people were co-opted by the majors to make blockbusters.
The only way to succeed theatrically is by keeping budgets low and use online viral marketing to promote movies and hope that Bluray sales are strong through word of mouth!!!FACT!!!
As bad as Disney & WB Discovery is going though, the issues at Paramount Global makes both companies look stable in comparison.
But the legacy media did it to themselves by being too greedy.
Image owning both the classic sci-fi franchise and the sci-fi franchise that could have been the next Star Wars and wasting then both.

2011: $5.641 billion (Adjusted for Inflation: $10.880 billion)

…and canceled.
I wonder if spending billions of dollars to churn out content that disrespected and denigrated the original IPs while insulting anyone who didn't swallow it as 'ist/phobe' was a bad move.

Welp, I'd say the Beavis and Butt-Head revival was nice while it lasted.
Beavis and Butthead could run Paramount much better by comparison.
Paramount is falling, yet Disney is still standing this world is so unfair. But yeah at this point Hollywood and all of western entertainment need a big slap or reality, because they are doing everything wrong
The main thing that’s saving Disney’s hides right now is the parks. But even they’re screwing them up as well just like everything else.
Paramount is relying on Sonic The Hedgehog 3 especially after Knuckles was a huge success!
I'd bet the producers and writers of ST:DIS, PIC (S1&2) and the other Trek shit they do won't get fired, no matter how bad things for Paramount get.
No one at Paramount will learn anything of this, instead ppl. like Kurtzman will blame the old Star Trek fans for not liking his terrible shows.
But DEI?? It’s for the modern audience, they should be raking in the dough, the diverse dough
Hollywood Entertainment in general is a Massive Dumpster fire 🔥🔥🔥
This made me so incredibly sad as a shareholder of Paramount i believed in this studio until the new star trek came out i promptly sold my shares at a loss i knew this was coming
Actions continue to have consequences for Paramount after what Alex Kurtzman's STAR TREK universe did long term to the franchise as a whole.
Furthermore, with this inflation economy under Jim Crow Joe, people are choosing what type of entertainment they want or don't want.
Paramount, like most legacy media outlets and studios, forgot the Golden Rule: The customer is always right.
You might not like it, you might even resent a segment of your audience and customers, but their dollars keep you employed.
For the last 10 years, the studios of Tinseltown forgot that rule, and are acting illogical.
The best messaging is woven in so seamlessly that a viewer shouldn't know it's there.
The problem these days is that anyone can see the messaging coming a light year away.
And the more times this becomes an issue the more people put a permanent personal boycott to never ever pay their money to see whatever is being produced by these studios.
Paramount's current predicament is self-inflicted and chronic.
Poor Paramount proper had to go on and get Globalized. They went from Global to Globules.
If I was part of modern Star Fleet I'd load up on goodies, kick out the crew and set out to the Andromeda galaxy with no intent to come back.
And if I lived in the Star Trek universe I'd get rid of most restrictions on my replicator and simply enjoy life. Enjoying life would include owning a fine selection of ancient weaponry like the MG42. All just for recreational purposes of course.
Isn't that giant money making movie Paramount has, Sonic 3, literally coming out at the end of the year?...
Nothing is more enjoyable than seeing a business fail that hates its customers.
Ahh, it's cronyism, aka crony capitalism. Has ZERO to do with being an actual capitalist.
Not to mention that Hollywood is a monopoly. When All studios are located in one state that pretty much means the industry is a monopoly.
how many studios need to fail before they realize that political zealots are the wrong people to write entertainment?
Star Trek could save Paramount but…. Paramount WON’T make Star Trek Anymore.
They extended alex kurtsman's contract. They get what they deserve with that stupidity
I’ve said that Star Trek venereal disease was a dumpster fire from season one episode one so this is old news
Don't forget that Paramount has wanted to create its own network since the 1970s, when they greenlit the aborted Star Trek Phase II show with intent that it be the network's flagship show. They had their moment with UPN, which folded in 2006 after a decade of weak sauce. And here they go again with the streaming service. Some folks never learn.
As a kid, i discovered M.A.S.H, I love lucy and the andy Griffith show. These shows were way before my time. 8 I'm glad gen Z as discovered the older shows as well
I like to break out "Sixteen Candles" and "The Breakfast Club" as non PC comfort food. I usually do it secretly after an incident where some puritanical kids in the family were over as I was watching these classics and they were just appalled that Molly Ringwald's father would let her take off with an older guy when she was "only16!!!" lol And of course Long Duck Dong didn't go over very well either with them. So I'm glad to hear Gen Z and Gen A are starting to enjoy good material again.
There's a good argument to be made that Kurtzman's brand of Star Trek _killed_ Paramount. Had they not renewed his contract and got rid of him when they had the opportunity and returned Star Trek to its original values they would have had at least one successful IP on their books. Instead business (and common )sense took a back seat to activism and they're now paying the price for that decision.

Actually Skydance asked for an extension because the deal Paramount had with Charter (?) cable is up for renewal, midnight April 30, and Skydance is waiting to see how that goes.. They are leaning away from Skydance because it would only benedfit one person. Sony can't talk, or anybody for that matter, right now because of the Skydance deal but Sony might have trouble with the FCC getting the deal done because of antitrust issues and it could take a couple of years if Sony did.
Age of the Megacorp. They will have their own military.
Paramount killed the cash cow, then tried to cook the steak in a steel forge. And watch everything evaporate.

I really can't see Sony buying Paramount considering the anti-trust issues. Unless the company divests itself of significant holdings in other IPs

The sad irony is that these IP’s were the most profitable when they churned out the least content. Movies and tv shows are expensive to produce. Merchandise, toys, games, apparel, repackaged physical media by comparison are far less expensive and less risky. But since the 2010’s the movies and tv shows have increased in quantity and decreased in quality, even damaging their lucrative merchandise revenue streams. And their answer seems to be more content on streaming and buying positive reviews and paying journos to run defense.
