- The Assassin's Creed Shadows rabbit hole keeps going deeper, and the lengths that the media (and possibly Ubisoft) are going to to protect this game is pretty astounding. This is a major AAA release, and Ubisoft literally cannot afford for this game to fail.

Just a reminder that the people defending AC: Shadows are the exact groups that screamed racism over Ghost of Tsushima, which depicted period accurate characters, homages to old Japanese samurai films, and a very respectful depiction of the samurai code of honor, even as the story called said code into question and whether it was even capable of winning a war against the vastly overwhelming Mongol horde while rigidly adhering to said code. And they called it racist because it was made by an American developer. Japanese critics and players' response was basically: "Check it out! Americans made a cool samurai game!"
Edit: Every jerk who thinks going "I wasn't offended" or "that never happened" can take a warning: That's not the "goctha!" you think it is, and I'm not wasting my time reading more replies to this when those trying to disagree with me can amount to nothing more than "no u."
There's also an active Twitter hate campaign trying to imply that ghost of tsushima did not sell very well on PC and that the 60k+ concurrent players is somehow "very low"
@@Dragonk116 Well, that's also easily the Sony fanboys crying about losing exclusives because they think having exclusives on PlayStation gives their empty existences value.

Funny thing is another Japanese history expert living in the USA (Yoshiko Okuyama, the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo) said after the anime series on Yoke that he is literally unknown in Japan. So we have two experts of Japanese descent, none of them being a historian or familiar with the era, claiming something complete diametrical about the same figure and his status in modern Japan... Yasuke as an "Assassin" looks like Nick Fury in russia scene in Secret Invasion.
To say he stood out was an understatement. The first historical mention of Yasuke was an entry by one of the Portuguese Missionaries to whom he was a slave. They described how they had hundreds, perhaps a thousand people outside the gates of the Portuguese Trade Compound wanting to pay money to see the strange new thing. "A towering tall figure with skin like the blackist ink, but it does not wash off!". He stood out so much that upon the first glimpse of him by members of the Japanese Public people wanted to fork over cash to get a look. "I know lets make a game where he is a Samurai Ninja!!!" /smacks head. It's not like this was hard to find. There are literally only 4 statements about Yasuke in the historical record. 4 sentences. AC games have never been historically accurate
Plus, they can easily mess up a historical figure. Putting Yasuke as the first playable historical character is a huge risk.
The Asian versus black protagonist issue isn't even about "historical accuracy" as such. The problem is that when people buy a game in a certain setting, they want to play a character who is representative of that setting. A minority of one is not representative of Japanese Samurais.
Funny how this was not a problem when we had a blonde-haired blue-eyed protagonist in Nioh. Why are the bulk of people complaining when the Japanese themselves aren't?
That's a weird irony to all this, the side that'd normally rally to lose their minds if the character wasn't region accurate (especially if they're white) are the ones whole heartedly embracing this.
@@utteero I can also use that same logic as well on how people who called Resident Evil 5 racist because the protagonist was a white male in Africa who had to survive against zombies who were of notable darker skin tone are same people defending Yasuke being a samurai in Japan. Stop changing the goal-post with irrelevant Whataboutisms. I am comparing 2 games set in feudal japan which included real historical characters in their stories. It is not unexpected that it would attract a similar audience.
I don't have to go far beyond Nioh to see how people like you are silent when the tables are turned (Gods of Egypt, Last Samurai, Ghost in a Shell, King Solomon's Mines, Tarzan, the list goes on...).

What slays me is that it was so obvious that if the main character would have been a Japanese man in a samurai game set in feudal Japan, it would have been a guaranteed money maker.
I just cannot understand how these businesses like Disney, Bud Light, WoTC, Microsoft, Ubisoft, Hollywood, and so on just don’t get it that not catering to an existing customer base does not bring in the dollars.
It’s not about the main character being black. It’s about not having a Japanese guy in a…well…Japanese action game set in the old days.
What have they done with their focus groups?
The thing is the series stuck to the main characters being *native* to the setting. AC: Origins was in Egypt so you were an Egyptian, AC: Odyssey was in Greece so you were a Greek, and AC: III was in America during the American Revolution so you were Native American. And since the series is branching into a "choose your character" game as far as the RPG series goes, fans wanted the characters to be both native Japanese characters.

They'll probably patch Assassin's Creed Origins to make Cleopatra dark skinned. So it aligns with the Netflix version of history.
Omg the photographic evidence. Anyone remember when people were putting out fake 'photos' of yasuke earlier this year trying to pressure for him to be in Shogun? He existed hundreds of years before photography.

A retcon of the original Japanese MC concept for Yasuke. Ubisoft did this purposely plus the egregious price of $130 for it.
Ubisoft needs to go bankrupt. To show the industry that if you don't do what the fans want, you go under. Lesson for other developers.
You can tell that despite setting a game in Japan, the Devs at Ubisoft hate Japan. You can tell by historical revisionism, and CHINESE architecture in the trailer.
How? The castle looks very similar to a japanese castle
Ya suck hey drama.

The Japanese and the island its set on loved it.
And they said the Japanese hated it too when in-fact it was the exact opposite not only did they love it they made them the official ambassadors of Tsushima. But something tells me Ubisoft won’t be getting that same level of respect in fact I think they’ll be getting the exact opposite.
Yusuke was brought to Japan by an Italian Jesuit. He was then given to Nobunaga as a gift. Nobunaga used him as a trophy to show of and to do his bidding as a retainer. No, not as a Samurai. Yusuke never did any fighting, battle or wore a proper Samurai armor. He was given a (Wakizashi), (small sword) and a small house. When Nobunaga's general, (Akechi Mitsuhide), rebelled against Nobunaga and killed him. Yusuke was given back to the Jesuit and was never heard from again.
Yeah, Yasuke was likely an odoke, and during the battle in which Nobunaga was killed, Yasuke was captured shortly after the battle began and was brought to Akechi Mitsuhide, who declared him as not a threat, stripped him of his wakizashi and sent him on his way.

That's the summary of it but you should give more details because his info is very limited
From what I read, the Italian Jesuit kinda just ditched Yasuke in Japan once his mission was over. Him being handed over to different jesuits is a possibility but we have no records of it

We know more about William Adams though and it seems like he was respected by the Japanese. While Yasuke doesn't even have a 2nd name. Probably in the Japanese historical records there are like 5 lines in total about him.
One of the founders of wikipedia said it was overtaken by ideologues years ago.
WHAT they now attacking William Adams???
it doesn't help that they revealed this game the same day that Ghost Of Tsushima came out on PC....... So a very good, and extremely well received game about ancient Japan came out the same day this sh** was revealed.
Why would a black guy be an effective assassin for Nobunaga? There is literally ONE black dude in the whole country, he’s probably a head taller than 75% of the population, and everyone knows exactly who he works for! And every disguise would require full body covering; you’d think at some point some plucky guard would ask “why are you wearing gloves in high summer?”
Sweet Baby Inc is a part of this game, so that explains a lot.
And just like that this game went from a ehhhhhh maybe when it’s discounted to a IM WOULDNT GET IT EVEN IF IT WAS FREE.
Yasuke wasn't a samurai. The most realistic depiction of him you'll get is from Hyouge Mono which is a great read. It's not realistic, it's got a lot of exaggeration and twisting of historic facts, but his purpose in that story is subtle and perfectly executed. Use the groundswell of this debacle of shame to prop up actual, worthy media for others.
DaVinci didn't create 007 weapons either yet yall were fine then
The only way to send a message that they hired badly in trying to appease the shareholders who don't know what they are talking about and chasing a DEI agenda is by letting this game fall. Agreed. I only use it for extremely basic facts or things like sports scores and animal facts because the people whom care about those as a whole tend to favor accuracy.
This may sound crazy but... wiki is controlled by progressive communists specially the editors. They edit and manipulate more than just this game in terms of historical facts.
they only use secondary sources, so anything remotely controversial will be entirely biased based on the interpretation of the sources they choose to cite.
It's not that, it's that they are literally trying to rewrite history for the sake of an agenda currently. In general you're supposed to cross reference information and not be a retard about accepting things at face value. That's a given rule on the internet.
Yasuke is only a retainer in Japan for about 16 months. That is not being a samurai.
Well what many are not saying is that retainers still wore armor like samurai, the only difference was that retainers were warriors who fought for food instead of land and weren't acknowledged as nobility, it wouldn't be hard for them to have kept the story the same with him just as a retainer since it would basically be the same, however people would still complain and I do believe most complaints is about his race not his statues
