The Yasuke Assassin's Creed Drama is INSANE...

  • The Assassin's Creed Shadows rabbit hole keeps going deeper, and the lengths that the media (and possibly Ubisoft) are going to to protect this game is pretty astounding. This is a major AAA release, and Ubisoft literally cannot afford for this game to fail.

Just a reminder that the people defending AC: Shadows are the exact groups that screamed racism over Ghost of Tsushima, which depicted period accurate characters, homages to old Japanese samurai films, and a very respectful depiction of the samurai code of honor, even as the story called said code into question and whether it was even capable of winning a war against the vastly overwhelming Mongol horde while rigidly adhering to said code. And they called it racist because it was made by an American developer. Japanese critics and players' response was basically: "Check it out! Americans made a cool samurai game!"
Edit: Every jerk who thinks going "I wasn't offended" or "that never happened" can take a warning: That's not the "goctha!" you think it is, and I'm not wasting my time reading more replies to this when those trying to disagree with me can amount to nothing more than "no u."

Disney created the playbook for this:
Company: do something controversial related to ESG and receive funding from Blackrock at lower interest rates
Consumer: get annoyed and complain about controversial ESG related thing
Company: reiceve an insane amount of coverage/backlash/"marketing" on the internet and call detractors of controversial ESG item all of the "ists" and "phobes" that apply
"News agencies": write articles applauding how stunning, brave and groundbreaking controversial ESG item is, and double down on calling unhappy fans all "ists" and "phobes" that apply
Target consumer: doesn't buy the product
Company: Make an excuse for failure or gaslight - i.e. "No one bought it because they are all racists" or "this controversial product was a great success despite sales" or "this wasn't as successful as we hoped due to market oversaturation"
Non-consumer shills: This product is amazing (even though we don't consume said product, we are going to virtue signal to you that we approve of your controversial ESG thing)

To say he stood out was an understatement. The first historical mention of Yasuke was an entry by one of the Portuguese Missionaries to whom he was a slave. They described how they had hundreds, perhaps a thousand people outside the gates of the Portuguese Trade Compound wanting to pay money to see the strange new thing. "A towering tall figure with skin like the blackist ink, but it does not wash off!". He stood out so much that upon the first glimpse of him by members of the Japanese Public people wanted to fork over cash to get a look. "I know lets make a game where he is a Samurai Ninja!!!" /smacks head. It's not like this was hard to find. There are literally only 4 statements about Yasuke in the historical record. 4 sentences. This one might be the hardest to find because it is from before Nobunaga named him Yasuke, by a few days. It was shortly before the Missionary had an audience with Nobunaga, where he gave him to the Daimyo. (Let the mob go bother his lordship)

Yet this game is worth $130... That is a discomforting amount for any videogame, let alone an Ubisoft game.
It's clear that everything is depending on this game, but once again Ubisoft mismanagement and greed prove to got the worst of them once again.

If Ubisoft had said "we came across this yasuke guy. Not much is known about him aside he was a black man in feudal Japan, so we were inspired to create a story around him fighting aside the Japanese daimyo" I think it would not have been this big deal. Eye roll cause of DEI but not more than that. The changing of history and stating things of him as facts is the problem. Sure there is media with him being portraided as a samurai, but that's media, just like ninjas that were not historical figures but media created.

That makes no sense. Under that logic it would be the gaming company manufacturing the controversy. If that's the case then why would they not just lower the price of the game!? Now with the controversy they created under your logic they have now cemented that at least half of their fans will most definitely not buy this product. Which means they lose more money in the end this way.

I don't think whoever they had on this game understands or has any interest in stealth or deception- particularly in an assassin game.
Yasuke- genuinely the easiest guy to find in the Entire Nation
Naoe- described as "wears her heart on her sleeve" by her creative
None of that makes sense with the tone- that's the direct opposite of a functional assassin and about as "stealthy" as the $100+ Price
