My main problem is simply disagreeing suddenly means I’m a racist & somehow not a fan of a franchise iv played almost every game of. Just no actual conversation happening only screams with zero arguments. If the game is good the game is good no matter what.

That’s how i feel. I don’t think the race of the main character is a huge deal for a lot of people. It’s totally normal to criticize a movie for having a nonjapanese main samurai character though. People always roll their eyes at this stuff. The difference now though is that instead of being a white samurai, he’s black. Of course some of the people upset about it are probably racist, but i think it’s pretty arrogant to assume that if you’re annoyed at stuff like that it makes you a racist.

Bet all these 'racist' AC fans have Origins in their top 5... Bayek was a white guy wasnt he? Oh wait.
People arent bothered about playing black characters - people are bothered when diversity and inclusion is hamfisted in.
Thousands of years of Japanese history and they just so happened to focus on this time period, with the black 'samurai'? Seems legit.
I want to see black culture, African stories and myths. Stuff we havent seen before, yano.
If i were black I'd want more than to just be pasted into every other country's history, when its convenient.

@Swavae I'm not convinced, I never heard anything like that. AC has always had race match up with location - who would have issue with Egyption in Egypt?
Thing is for me, if inclusion and diversity wasn't discussed every 5 seconds, people wouldn't be anywhere near as annoyed by this new AC game.
I use Garth from fable 2 as an example of this. He was black, nobody cared. He was cool.
Current day. New Fable trailer. Richard Ayoade (a fucking national treasure), people get mad about him being included because he's black.
The box has been opened now. Anytime a minority is included it will be assumed to be part of THE MESSAGE. Can you blame people for thinking that? Nope.
Ubisoft has been intentionally provocative, as they are aware how this will be seen. No doubt it'll be used as a deflection also, if the game just ends up sucking balls.
      Tldr - I don't blame you

Being real, Yasuke is 100% a money grab opportunity. There was already a AC Japan story, had been for a few years now, pulling the name 'Taka' out on twitter was not some random thing. Taka Yamaguchi was/should've been the protagonist of the game, Naoe could've even fit as a former student of Mochizuki Chiyome, who was also in the original Japan story, as a Templar ally. Along with Hattori Hanzo who was a Master Assassin for the Order, who partnered with Taka a few times. Now formula up to now has been use a fictional character who is in line with the time period and setting, and skirt the edges of the actual history of the time with the AC story (the fill in the gaps/secret history established from the first one).
While Yasuke was there, he was not as important as the game is making him out to be, what they could've done though is have him be an important side character who worked with the Order in secret or as a go between for us and Oda since he was said to be close to Oda. Instead everything formerly established is being tossed aside for the sake of including a black character. This freedom fighter/savior angle they're writing toward just doesn't exist at the time. Now you can say it's fictional, but first even fiction has rules, second they're breaking and bending the time period to justify the story, mainly Yasuke's existence as they want to write him. Because what makes even less sense is that Naoe is even partnering with him when the trailer shows that she saw him among the soldiers when her family was being murdered and her home burned. So now he can't even when reasonable be the bad guy, and why is that if not for any other reason than he's black and we can't possible set him up as the villain of her story. Thirdly and I think this is the one that we should really look at, the idea of needing a foreign perspective has never come up in an AC game until we finally got to Japan. Why is that? Why is it that Japan needed the foreign perspective to explore its history. Even at the level of setting themselves apart from Tsushima or ROTR, that should've come down to story and gameplay, rather than what they've gone for.
Look, down to it, they could've waited another game cycle to move the next game back to Africa and explore the Mali or Songhai Empires along with the overwhelming variety of African Mythology outside of Egyptian myth. I'd love to see an AC go back to India or China and explore Hindu and Chinese myth respectively. Head back to America and maybe just maybe follow up on the tribe Eivor came across in Vinland iirc they had the Apple of Eden, and Native Mythology is deep and largely unexplored (for good reason in large part). There are other chances to get all sorts of characters and have not only more meaning, but at least come off as genuine attempts to right a perceived wrong. As I said at the beginning, Yasuke comes off as nothing more than a money grab because of the leanings toward diversity and how much blind support these things can drum up right now.

I don't care about Ubisoft games, but I have a lot of experience with Nioh. TL;DR at the end. Here are a few facts of note about Nioh:
The protagonist of Nioh, William, is based off of the real life figure William Adams, later dubbed Miura Anjin. Miura Anjin, both in game and in real history, was granted the title of samurai by Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Though Nioh is a partially fictional setting with yokai and magic, there are also real world events in it. For example, the cannons that were in the ship William sailed in on, the Liefde, are shown in game as being used in the Battle of Sekigahara.
Yasuke is also in Nioh. You can fight against him as a boss or play as him directly after unlocking him in the Hidden Teahouse. Before he is revealed as Yasuke, his title as a boss is "Obsidian Samurai."
In Nioh 1, Yasuke's dialog to William states, "Lord Nobunaga told me that he would make me a true samurai some day, but he died before it could happen. It seems you have achieved it on your own."
In Nioh 2, this differs. In sub mission "The Warrior," Yasuke's dialog states, "Lord Nobunaga made me a samurai. He freed me from my shackles. Now I vow to fight on... so that nothing may disturb my master's rest." Keep in mind that the events of Nioh 2 are almost entirely a prequel to Nioh 1.
So, across both Nioh 1 and Nioh 2, Yasuke essentially carries himself as a samurai, even if he was never officially given the title by his master. But, even the in-game title "Obsidian Samurai" assumes him as one from the start. Nioh 2 seems to cement this, with Yasuke retroactively contradicting what he said in Nioh 1. Instead of having a typical lordship over a territory or commanding armies, he overlooks Nobunaga's burial site, defending his lord as he did before Nobunaga's death.
    TL;DR, here's the takeaways:
In Nioh 1 and 2, you can play as both Miura Anjin and Yasuke.
Though history shows that Miura Anjin was given the title of samurai but Yasuke only the position of retainer, both characters are recognized in the Nioh games as samurai.
In Nioh 2, you can also play as a custom character, so your samurai can look like just about anything you want, man or woman, any origin.
I hope this clarifies things. Let me know if there was anything I missed.

If this game came out around the time of AC3, there would have never been such a racket about it and a lot of the people raging right now would have been mostly optimistic about the game.
But now more and more people are becoming aware that such games go in this direction for brownie points and cash infusions by ESG investors instead of because they have a cool idea that they want to make reality.
You can be sure that most of the people who are upset about this game, are still fans of GTA San Andreas and Carl Johnson.

Gotta get that ESG score up!).So whilst Yasuke was a bit of an oddity at the time he honestly didn't amount to much ,he was after all just a retainer and his uniqueness actively hurts him in this instance; hard to be an assassin when you're physically taller and darker than everyone else and stand out in every room, it's also scary how after the trailer dropped ideologues immediately rushed to change wiki pages to lie about Yasuke. Anyway Yasuke should've just been a character the main characters interact with (like da'vinci) who gives you missions or helps you out/saves you then everyone would be happy then too.
People aren't racist (a word thrown around way to much where it doesn't belong honestly) especially not the Japanese who are mad that they've wanted a assassin creed game set in their culture yet for political reasons that are mainly western centred reasons their culture is now co-opted to be used as an ideological weapon (like how in the aforementioned hypothetical Africa game people would be quite right to get upset if the main character was white or asian and I'd be against that too) since an ex ubisoft guy told us what the original plot of the game was going to be before current year. Honestly I feel bad for all the black people who are fed up of getting essentially writing sloppy seconds instead of them just basing games on African culture and people instead.

I don’t think it has anything to do with the main protagonist being a black guy. The big thing that it has to do with his UB soft charging us 110 bucks for the game. On top of that Ubisoft has told us, as gamers, that we need to get used to not owning our games. Has nothing to do with the protagonist.

You’re damn right it’s because of a black protag, it’s about the black protag raceswapping an asian position(a even more marginalized group) out in spite of all that trash these woke media are spouting, DEI this, representation that, fairness for the marginalized. But with the pattern we’ve seen going on for around a decade or so, turns out it was just code for “black.” It ain’t really about the other marginalized groups, that’s why you’ll be seeing shit like 5 roles for the black folks, black male, black female, black gay male, black light skin male, black elderly wisemen/woman and so on and on, then you’ll have maybe like 1 or 2 positions for the asians for example that gets to be shared with all the different kind of asians. Sometimes they’ll be lucky as just a background extra. Ubisoft can’t hide behind the historical angle with this character either, because that’s exactly what dismantles their cover when they had a precedence of never using a historical person in the first place.
Leftist are snakes, they’re hypocrites, they’re contradictory. They have a fetish for black people. And it’s not really about you, it’s about them, because they are mostly white people who now get to play the white savior in real life to feed their ego. Ya’ll just tokens but you don’t really realize it. They’ve been exposed these last few years, this is fatigue and people are calling them out on that shit. Haven’t you noticed all these leftist media and movements are taking losses left and right? People are waking up on the woke.

Look I'm a long time fan of the AC series I'm upset about recent games because they lost the whole point of being an assassin the main characters were always 90% of the time the same ethnicity as the country they were in and, yes I know the game has never been realistic but, I miss it no being a hack and slash. my example of a great AC game unity it didn't have the best story but, the parkour and stealth was done beautifully I don't care what the ethnicity of my character is but I want them to be part of the assassins again, alexios wasn't even an assassin they could've made it a spin off in the same universe called Odyssey of the eagle bearer also, the character being a black samurai doesn't bother me cool concept and idea.
but, people trying to change and force people to change real life history to suit their narrative is what makes me mad about the whole thing and, this could be a great game just not a great assassins creed game plus, assassins creed freedom cry is a great game in it's own right.
I love Achilles from AC3 too I just want a well written story/character the story going back to templars vs assassins.
Not a half baked fantasy rpg hack and slash where the protagonist magically get's a hidden blade; doesn't get initiated into the order and, being able to scale everything by just holding one button it get's so boring it, was so fun being able to use all the parkour mechanics to traverse the landscape but, you couldn't just scale a flat wall you had to think and, get into the mind of how would an assassin climbs. I don't just want to get the character in their prime I want to follow their story and, know their reason for joining the order and, watch them grow.
I mean dude give me a main character who, has a good story that makes sense has style when parkouring around I don't care if he's white black yellow pink or purple I just want a good AC game.
Also thank anyone who read this I know it's a lot but, one more thing I don't like how people are trying to make the Japanese out to be racist when, you're trying to represent their culture imagine if a white man tried to go and change black culture and history the point is, don't try and change someone's culture and, when they don't like it claim their racist I'm just over being called a racist just because i want a good game because if the game comes out and I call it shit I am somehow automatically a racist again thank you for your time.

If the idea is to create a game in the correct environment and Japanese traditions settings And that has to be done properly, in my opinion. The problem with Yasuke, I think, is that we Japanese expected more of a representation of a famous shinobi or samurai to represent the land of the rising sun. And I think if we wanted an African protagonist, I would have liked it more if it had been set in a traditional Mozambican environment with an African protagonist.
More importantly, this is the first time that Ubisoft has decided to use a main character as a historical figure rather than a secondary one. And I think that's what created the controversy that's going on right now.

It's one game and are you people really crying about how the female protagonist doesn't look Japanese, like what? 😂 I mean the structure thing is the only valid thing but saying the FP looks vietnamese is insane, lots of Japanese have smaller eyes and tanner skin, sorry they didn't make her the super pretty, big boobed high pitched school girl.

@@SynKyller As a Japanese, I was very interested in African culture. And so I did research to find traces if there were Africans in Japan in the periods between 1500's and 1700's. In the National Library, where you can find all the documents from the history of Japan, a bit like X-Files with the files etc. Gathered in one place. All in one place. I don't know how to say it in English, but hey, I'll do my best. I found documents about Yasuke, but not much, just a page that talks about his history and the letter he wrote before he left Japan, it was said that Nobunaga found a person chained by the Portuguese Who has the power Stronger than a bear And that he had the ability to be able to knock down 10 people at once. near the harbor and Since Nobunaga was a person of great curiosity he wondered why he was chained. Asking lots of questions to the slaver. He decided to wash him He felt A little bad to see a man treated like this and to see him so dirty But in fact He understood that his skin was black And that's where the first Japanese to meet an African. And so nobunaga. decided. to keep him as a bodyguard. since he was very very strong and he never separated from nobunaga. and nobunaga. asked him a question, what's your name? l 'African said to him, "I don't have a name. So I'll give you one. Your name will be Yasuke. And now that I have set you free, you are no longer a slave. You are my bodyguard. And you will always be close to me. Now that you are with me. There will be no one to humiliate you. Because you are my bodyguard. And little by little, we'll get to know each other. Nobunaga gave him everything he needed, like a house, food, bath and everything. And that's why Yasuke was so fascinated by Nobunaga and he was so loyal, the loyalty of a warrior Who never left a second Of Nobunaga. From time to time, he liked to talk to him. even in private. not every time. because nobunaga was literally the highest status of the country of japan nobunaga was a military commander of feudal japan from the sengoku period to the azuchi-momoyama period in japan he is one of the three greatest heroes of the sengoku period. He was a busy man, and yes, Yasuke was there, but not outside, close to Nobunaga. Nobunaga killed himself during the Honnō-ji Incident in 1582, when his retainer Akechi Mitsuhide ambushed and trapped him in a temple in Kyoto, upon realizing he was surrounded, he committed seppuku. Nobunaga was succeeded by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who along with Tokugawa Ieyasu completed his war of unification shortly afterward.Yasuke was there, he wanted to fight at the side of his beloved Daimyō But Nobunaga don't want to see Yasuke tied up with a chain like a slave again So Nobunaga decide to give him freedom. For black person Do you know what that means, that's crazy, you know that's? Wow, that's beautiful And then when he got there, man to him. To save Nobunaga family first So he gave him a boat. So he can escape. He made a promise, To him. To live his life happily, He was invited. You should go back to your country And promise me To have a good life And then he disappeared, Some people say he was returned to his own country. He left as a Christian monk and I love this story, I really do.
Nobunaga is the only one daimyo to have freed a slave.

IMO, the big issue isn't that Yasuke is in the game and may be exaggerated from a retainer/bodyguard with weapons into a full Samurai-class of nobility (because AC has aliens and scifi tech and isn't historical anyways), but rather there isn't an Asian male protagonist in a game about feudal Japan (in the first full Assassin's Creed game in this part of the world). If we call this race washing and look at this "blackwashing" in combination with "whitewashing" from Tom Cruise' Last Samurai and the Shogun TV/book series and other TV/film, then we can conclude it as a part of the long-running discrimination against Asian men by the media that prefers to use any other men except Asian men as the lead protagonist.
Tom Cruise's Last Samurai and the Shogun TV/book series also made the main character a white guy in Japan (instead of focusing on the thousands of East Asian heroes, they decide to create a new European character based very loosely on several real life figures and heavily exaggerated into being mostly a fictional character). Also see Dragon Ball, Avatar Last Airbender live action film, Ghost in the Shell, Death Note, etc. where they all were whitewashed. This situation goes back decades, such as when Bruce Lee was denied the role of the character in the Kung Fu series (they chose David Carradine) because he was considered "too Chinese" to play the role of a wandering Shaolin monk. They chose John Wayne to play Genghis Khan even though there have been Asian/Asian-American actors in Hollywood since the Silent era of film. The new Netflix show the Three Body Problem was based on a Chinese novel series where the first book almost entirely takes place in 1970s China and 2000s China. What did Netflix do? They erased the entire modern 2000s Chinese setting to set it in the United Kindom instead, got rid of basically all of the Chinese characters, and replaced them with new characters that allowed them to use mostly British actors. For people who are familiar with the books, the two different Chinese settings were unique and are supposed to be thematically and philsophically contrasting with each other to represent different values and perspectives...so they are not only race & culture swapping, but they're also erasing key themes and philosophical viewpoints of the story.

Even if Yasuke was there, they should retain the fidelity of the setting by having a native protagonist, like we had in literally every one of the over twenty entries in the franchise. If AC does one thing well, it's the setting and immersion. I'd love to have played as Miyamoto Musashi for example. Honestly, I wouldn't even be mad if any other entry had a black protag, but I just love Japan and Japanese people so much, so it sucks that we can't have a native -- but this is just my own bias.
Also something I've noticed is that you say people are angry because the protagonist doesn't look like them. Most of them are white, not asian. This protagonist would be asian under normal circumstances, which would not look like them either.

It's just fake annoying that they will do all they can to avoid using a white or Japanese man. So they use a black "samurai" and a female ninja lol. Its the obvious nature of their hatred towards straight men of white or Asian backround. THats the stuff I can't stand. Yusuke should have been an ally in the game because it's an interesting side story. Def not the main character.

Hi, Black Man here. Gotta point out a couple of things: first, you spelled Yasuke wrong. Secondly, if you actually look at Yasuke's documented history, you'd understand that there isn't much there-kinda like finding black characters in video games naturally. Yasuke wasn't a samurai in the traditional sense but held the title as a broad term that was used centuries later for all men and women serving in military roles. Yasuke was a retainer, a sword bearer. Essentially, through all accounts, this man was a servant to the Shogun. This is the Japanese version of Johnny Appleseed or John Henry, or a figure wrapped in myth more than historical fact. His story is a fascinating blend of history and legend, but it's crucial to separate the romanticized versions from the real-life experiences he had.
I'd rather see authentic black historical figures such as Shaka Zulu, Queen Nzinga, or Harriet Tubman. Hell, there's a long list of black figures I'd love to see in games, but here we are, just getting these scraps that gaming DEI producers think we need.

I don't understand why this is so hard to understand. Would they want to play with a white dude in the middle of Africa? Trying to save the poor black people from the templars.

This is a disingenuous reply, yasuke was real and it's perfectly within the rights of the game designers to create a historical fiction narrative around the sparce details of his time in Japan. The game has already added entirely made up context to the life of George Washington, Leonardo De Vinci, and made up characters such as Conor, Eveline, Altair, Etzio and all the other assassins. Yasuke's live after Japan could definitely be explored in dlc but his main game story may perhaps be relatively brief and the game could mor heavily focus on the other protagonist Naoe whom most of you critics, who have even played the game yet, seem to ignore.

Perhaps you should wait for AC in Africa, stop stealing. Yasuke was not even a samurai, he's "retainer", a servent, and a very insignificant person in history.
