  • Rachel Zegler's live-action Snow White remake is reportedly testing VERY badly, and that's after several rounds of delays and reshoots. Could this be why Disney didn't promote it at Cinemacon? Do they know this is another box office bomb incoming?

@7:26 Little Mermaid did NOT make a profit. Strangely, Forbes keeps misrepresenting the money that studios make or lose from a movie. The budget for Little Mermaid was $240 million and another $140 million was spent on marketing. That gives a total cost of $380 million. The box office was $570 million, of which Disney received about half, so $285 million. That leaves a nett LOSS of $95 million. Why Forbes knowingly lies, I do not know.

You're right about it not profiting, but that $240 million is just the production budget Disney will publicly admit to. According to tax filings in the UK, the production company for the film had spent just under $300 million by September of 2022 with 9 months until release. We won't know the actual production budget until this September. It's probably over $350 million.

They needed to crowbar their victim rhetoric into the movie, and the only 2 obvious vectors were this and feminism. Notice how they went full bore for both (the whole, Snow White won’t be white & will instead be another shrill man-hating girl boss).
The fundamental problem with remaking Snow White in modern Hollywood is that the people who now run it view the witch as the real hero. The witch is their ideal woman: Powerful, angry, fugly, superficially intelligent, hateful towards genuinely beautiful and virtuous women, and clearly jealous of those who can land attractive good men whilst acting otherwise uninterested in any sort of heterosexual romance. You know, your average gross 3rd wave feminist constantly telling you she don’t need no man, which is good since none want her either.

I know of an Okinawan version of Snow White (because the story travelled so far) that is changed enough that it is its own story. In fact, if they want the latino/hispanic demography, they could have just adapated a version from Puerto Rico, Mexico or the Dominican Republic. Some even with dwarves, in one Snow White actually hired the dwarves as her bodyguards, and Disney could have adapted that.

@@raylf3141No. Just no. We have enough of those storylines around. I always liked Snow White because no matter what horrible things that happened to her, she never lost hope, or her overwhelming kindness and sense of goodness. There are plenty of stories with strong female characters they could do, but the tale of Snow White wasn’t about that. Stories like Cinderella and Snow White inspired me a thousand times more than some marvel female superhero, not that those stories aren’t valid either, because they absolutely are, but so many girls for a long time have felt like they had to make themselves more masculine to be respected and seen as powerful. But femininity and softness is nothing to be ashamed of, and can be just as important as physical strength and toughness. As far as the prince goes I’ll admit, in modern day terms he would be considered a stalker, but I would have hoped that Disney would alter him a little to make him better instead of worse. I hope to one day make my own version of Snow White, and I feel pretty confident when I say it would be better received than whatever the heck Disney is trying to make right now.

I'd even have given them a dang bone and let them cast a short woman for one or two of them! They could have changed the skin color of one or two of them! Made Doc a black woman! I don't care! The only requirement I had was: short.

"In Teutonic and especially Scandinavian mythology and folklore, the term dwarf (Old Norse: dvergr) denoted a species of fairy inhabiting the interiors of mountains and the lower levels of mines. Dwarfs were of various types, all of small stature, some being no more than 18 inches (45 cm) high and others about the height of a two-year-old child. In appearance they were sometimes beautiful, but more usually they resembled grave old men with long beards and, in some cases, humped backs."
      - Britannica
In the early Old Norse sources, dwarfs are typically described vaguely, with no reference to them being particularly small; in the legendary sagas and later folklore, however, they are often described as short.
Now, remembering that Snow White is a German story...
Not all late sagas involving dwarfs describe their size, but all that do describe them as short. In some German stories, the dwarf takes on the attributes of a knight but is most clearly separated from normal humans by his small size, in some cases only reaching up to the knees. Despite their small size, dwarfs in these contexts typically have superhuman strength, either by nature or through magical means.

The most wonderful thing about Disney is that the majority of their product is stolen from classic literature, cultural fairytales, and free stuff that is in the public domain. It's wonderful because my kids can read the original material for themselves. If you say "Jungle Book" to my daughters they will respond with "Kipling" or Andersen for The Little Mermaid. The originals are not watered down versions. They tell significant moral tales. They do tend to provoke a lot of questions about religion, politics, geography, class systems and other things specific to when and where they were written...not to mention vocabulary. A bit more work that sitting them down to watch cartoons versions....but well worth the time.

This whole thing has been a Cluster F from the get go. The Dinklage thing, the response to the “magical creatures” photo, the actresses comments, the hastily made CG dwarves photo… it’s a never ending dumpster fire and it couldn’t be happening to a more deserving company.
Either this will likely be tossed onto Disney+ and be done with it OR they might just call it a write-off. If so it will be a shame cause I want to see them complete this and put it out in theaters to disastrous results because in my heart I love Disney and feel that the only way for the company to fix things is by letting it hit rock bottom. Things have to get dire before they come to their senses or they are fired and are replaced by people who have their senses.

Dwarves ARE magical creatures. You replaced magical creatures with none magical creatures. Pure brilliance!

Beating a dead horse here, but I will say once more; DISNEY could make this "dumpster fire" of a "Snow White" movie work (maybe) IF they decided to adapt Tanith Lee's "Red As Blood" short story where the character of Snow White is the EVIL antagonist to the Witch Queen's GOOD protagonist. The original drarves are replace by seven demonic imps who are drawn to Snow White's EVIL aura. Not only would this "remake" be using an original, well written story made by a multi - talented, and experienced writer (as opposed to the cheap hacks that pass for "writers" nowadays in Hollywood), but an EVIL Snow White would suit Ms. Zegler's actual arrogant, and insufferable personal character to a tee.
Since Ms. Zegler herself seems to think NOTHING about her "Snow White" having ANY INTEREST in romance and love, DISNEY could cater to that view by having EVIL Snow White, be snubbed by the prince, and THEN, out of anger and revenge, EVIL Snow White ensnares the prince alive in a glass cell slowly filling with an inky corrupting miasma, (a take on the original Snow White being enshrined in a glass coffin / sarcophagus).
Such a twisted version of the original story might just be "original" and intriguing enough to pull in an audience interested in seeing a form of Dark Fantasy.
Of course, this being a DISNEY offering, there will have to be a Happy Ending. In the original Tanith Lee story, the Witch Queen defeats Evil Snow White, BUT does not kill her. Instead her corrupted soul is cleansed of it's evil miasma, and the new pure soul is taken in by the new born daughter of the Witch Queen and the King. The movie's final scene is the young NEW Snow White (portrayed by a suitable child actress) frolicking with the woodland creatures who are drawn by her purity and innocence.

i totally forgot about this movie.
There's been such a lack of news that it practically disappeared from my mind.
I'm kinda surprised they haven't burned the thing to the ground.

Disney is basically like the captain of the Titanic at the moment, where everybody keeps warning them about hitting icebergs but all they say they'll do is slightly change direction and then keep going at full speed towards disaster anyway.

I don't believe in ghosts but pretty sure curses may actually be real and he allegedly cursed a remake, didn't he?
Highly unadvised for them to spit on his grave by purposefully marring the film that meant so much to him

If the main lead actress continuously criticizes the original film upon which the remake is based, it undoubtedly raises concerns and hints at a foreboding omen for the project.

I recently rewatched the OG about a week ago. I broke down crying. I remembered the fun times as a kid when I watched these movies, and bawling at the fact Disney has fallen so far, how the world has gotten worse. I wanted to just be a kid again. Disney used to let us have escapism. Now it's post-modernism capitalism.

When Disney puts the seven Portland hippies in the parks and remove the dwarfs then I'll believe that Disney is confident. Also, all Snows in the parks should be Hispanic.

Gal Gadot joyfully declaring “she doesn’t get rescued by the Prince!” was huge for me. They were really proud of themselves. I’m really looking forward to the Rocky Balboa training montage where Snow White becomes Snow Boss & she takes out the queen in the 5th round.
