This channel contains videos from my Private Pilot training (VFR completed in 2015) as well as my IFR training (in process). Most of my training was done in a G1000 equipped Cessna 172 at Palo Alto Airport in the San Francisco Bay area. I use a GoPro camera mounted inside the cockpit on a telescopic pole placed vertically between the front seats. This pole is no longer available. It was designed and sold for use in older 172 models (before shoulder belts) and has suction cups on each end to be placed horizontally between the two back windows. For a few flights I mounted a second camera under the tail of the aircraft (on the skid plate) but, due to club rules, this is no longer permitted. I capture cockpit audio via a cable from the plane's audio system directly into the GoPro.
Flying the amazing SR-22T - Departure from KPAO
This is my KPAO departure for an IFR flight to KEMT. In this video I am early on in my IFR training and this is the second time I have flown the Sirrus SR22 G3 Turbo. The muscle memory from the G1000 in the Cessna 172 is very hard to overcome with the different layout in the SR22. Hope you enjoy the departure. Stay tuned for the rest of flight.

First Time Flying a Cirrus SR22T
zhlédnutí 84KPřed 6 lety
I have long thought that if I ever bought a plane it would be a Cirrus (based on the features, specs and design). I thought it was the perfect plane to step into from a Cessna 172. Well, today I had my first ever opportunity to fly (and fly in) a Cirrus SR22T. All I can say is WOW! This is a highly capable, fast and very fun plane to fly. In this video you will see my take off from KPAO and ret...

Here are the three approaches and landings from today's Solo Long Cross Country flight KPAO-KMOD-KSAC-KPAO. This just about completes all of my PPL requirements. Total flight time was 2:17 with about 2 hours in the air covering a total distance of 209.2 nm. I included some extra footage once I got back into the Palo Alto area. It was very busy and I had to do a left 360 for spacing over the bay...

Hey! I'm also a pilot in the bay area! I'm making a video about the ILS system and I was wondering if I could use a couple seconds of your video where you break out of the clouds and see the runway, I'll link back to this video in the description. Totally cool if not. Cheers!
Sure. No problem. Send me a link to your video.
@@Norcal_Flyer Awesome, thanks. I'm still making it, will send a link when published!
What a great educational video please make more IFR videos and if you can also put a split screen to show how the instructor plugs in the GPS. 🙌🏽🔥
What a great video and Instructor and pilots!
Thank you for watching. This was one of the most interesting and fun training flights ever.
I always struggled on radio calls I’d always have to make them say it again and again on my solo😂😂
How come the student is not hand flying the approach down to minimums? What if the auto pilot doesn’t work????
My instructor used to bail me out all the time on radio calls. I STRUGGLED when I was solo. Good job making him do the “say again”
Brings back all the same issues I remember struggling with many years ago on the steam gauges. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching.
Back around 1987 I was flying a Navajo into DSM, WX was down on the floor I had a hold while a Iowa State plane made several approaches trying to clear a hole through the fog. On the ldg approach I broke out at 50 ft. A very sweatty approach and ldg.
Thanks for watching.
Wow i learned on old round gauges back in the 80's, i ll have get on xplane and on msflight sim to get up to date. You flying a 172? U r doing great. Great instructor also! Greensboro NC
Thanks for watching. This was a video from my IFR training. I was very fortunate have a great instructor.
Awesome to see! This is right near my area, I've flown in KSAC, but been meaning to fly out to KPAO one of these days!
Should be teaching hand flying first and then familiarizing with autopilot. Too much reliance on it anymore. Also need to teach being stable at 1,000 feet with on speed, in approach config with flaps and gear and all trimmed out. With that, allyou need to do is manage throttle for glide slope. If go around, it's pitch, power, flaps, positive rate, gear up.
This dude needs a ton of work. As we all do. Every day. Tough conditions for sure. Not sure he was ready for it but thats why we have and are good instructors
I'm a commercial/instrument pilot but just getting back in the cockpit after a 20 year hiatus & don't have much IMC time. So, clearance gave you a route, which you went to the trouble of copying/reading back, but departure amended with a much different, but simpler direct route, correct? Is this normal, or will your route generally be what you get on the ground?
This video is absolutely a gift, thanks. Great instructor, calm, lots of actual IFR do's and don'ts. Brings me back to when I was going for my instrument rating, but on steam gauges of course. Wish the definition was better so I could read the FPD's better otherwise excellent.
Thank you for watching for taking the time to leave a comment. This remains one of my all time favourite flights from IFR training.
@@Norcal_Flyer I can see why. Nothing like breaking out of the clag near mins. Can't say enough good about your instructor. Clear headed, confident, ego at bay, he inspires confidence. Great video, great lesson and BTW great downwind landing on a wet runway.
nice instruction, don't be intimidated by the process. Use flaps as needed you don't have to dump in full flaps to lose altitude.
Nice. Thanks for sharing. Which is better (less ambiguous on a scratchy VHF radio): "outta 9 hundred 4 3 thousand" or "9 hundred climbing 3 thousand"?
I was taught to state my altitude and what I am climbing (or descending) to. Thanks for watching.
@@Norcal_Flyer Great. That sounds like a good change from what was in the video, but that was clearly early in your training. I teach my students to state [current altitude] ["climbing" or "descending"] [target altitude].
@@richardacuff4881 Exactly. Early on in training it didn’t always come out of my mouth in the right order. 🤦♂️
Beautiful job!
I like the comment from the CFI at 10:51 : "Trust the instruments...don't believe what your body is telling you"
What about the flaps.
Full flaps going into the stall. Recovery is same as a go around
I just did about 10 stalls today. Our flight school has us practice them a lot. I believe it really helps you be more zen with the airplane.
Wow. That was pretty steep at the end with no power.
This vid must have been taken a few years ago. Now you're posting again, are you going to start flying again?
Posting some video from prior flights. I have not been recording flights lately. Thanks for watching.
Wait G1000 doesn't even show mountains or runways???? it's a 30000$ system and it shows nothing????? wtf
MFD shows terrain. I have it zoomed out. As I recall this aircraft did not have synthetic vision (PFD).
Instructor misspoke. Power is not added "immediately." It's only added after you are sure the stall has been eliminated. In some aircraft, this mistake can kill you. A friend of mine had a close call when his student added full power while his Mooney was still stalled. The torque of the engine rolled the plane over. It started spinning and quickly went flat. They recovered after several turns.
Why the annoying loud music at the end?
Really a great video with wonderful insights into what it’s like during a lesson. Good instructor. Seems stressful. Did you ever get your rating?
From a NorCal approach guy that works that Sac exec sector, that was a cool video!
that synthetic vision is soo cool . makes it alot easier .. nice tech these days for flyers
"Clear for the option" ...what does that mean?
CLEARED FOR THE OPTION- ATC authorization for an aircraft to make a touch-and-go, low approach, missed approach, stop and go, or full stop landing at the discretion of the pilot.
@@Norcal_Flyer Thanks!'
Nice IFR flight ✈️

Thanks for watching.
HEYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!! So glad to see you back up in the sky!!! I haven’t been up in a while either. Looking to go up this spring!!
Thanks for watching.
Standard callouts missed.
Nice to see you back!!
Sorry for the long delay. Hope you enjoy the flight.
"Caps available"
Burn hobbs time on waiting for release always fun $$
No kidding. Appreciated the immediate departure tower offered. One thing Mark always told me, be ready to go. Thanks for watching.
As soon as you get in the pilot seat of an airplane.....the thought of 'saving money' is LOOOOONG gone.
I wonder how much easier those G1000 172s are to fly than the Cessna 172s I train in
Honestly I like the steam gauge better. I’m training in G1000 right now and it’s good I just find the gauges better to read than the scrolling numbers. Still both good tho
Plane type?
172S
They must have heard your instructor because the latest version of the approach plate now includes MOD ASOS frequency.
Great note! Extinguish anything flashing… Already burned in! 😁✌️
Thanks for watching.
Thanks for taking the time to post, especially because this is my home airport! Getting re-certified after a 30 hiatus... good to just watch the pattern, ATC, and the landings. Very helpful.
Good luck. I hope my videos are helpful. Thanks for watching.
Excellent instructor. This video is a huge help to me... thanks for the post!
This was a fantastic flight. I remember it as if it was yesterday. Thanks for watching.
Was that a ACS slow flight demo or Normal landing lol ?
Thanks for watching.
Thanks for allowing me to follow you from KPAO to KSAC. I am flying again after many years and I am updating buying a Sierra SR 22T In six months. Sure nice transitioning from IFR flying with round gages and mechanical pointers to a “glass cockpit”, wow.
Congrats on the SR22T. A fantastic plane. I have a few videos flying this plane. Thanks for watching.
My first flight to Lake Tahoe was in a C150 on my own. It was a hot day and I remember taking a lot of the runway just to get airborne. Then had to continue straight out north over the lake to gain height before turning back south to clear the mountains and back to Livermore. If I had a set of golf clubs with me I think I'd still be circling over the lake!
Thanks for watching!
IFR training and check ride was all manual in the 1970s. Fancy displays don't make a good pilot.
Appreciate your skill back in the day but for situational awareness, the G1000 and GPS in general are powerful tools. One advantage I bet you would agree with is the G1000's usage of the magnetometer (note, no pilot adjustment necessary) instead of a vacuum driven gyro (constant adjustment needed) to display your magnetic heading.
@@pboothus Yes. However, there should be a desktop flight simulator to get students proficient in quickly navigation through the G1000 rather than stumbling around during instrument flight training.
It would be nice to be able to read the PFD. Nice video.
That was always a goal of mine but very difficult to achieve. Thanks for watching.
No uploads in the last 3 years? What happened?
I recorded almost all of my VFR training flights for my own learning and posted them for others to benefit from. I continued when I started with IFR training but I got very busy with work and didn't have time to edit and post. I have a bunch of raw footage (including a SR22T flight from KPAO to KEMT) that I am hoping to edit as soon as I can find the time. Sorry about that.
Glad I came to see this video...planning to fly to KSAC on PilotEdge and wasn't sure if that holding pattern depicted on the ILS approach was a required procedure or not! He's doing pretty well for a new instrument student.
per approach, "turn 360, maintain 2000 till established on localizer,..." He was vectored/cleared for the approach, so no procedure turn was necessary.
