Trout Fishing - Thunderstorms on the Cherrybrook

Trout fishing on Cherrybrook, Dartmoor. Waving a fishing rod for six hours during a series of thunderstorms is somewhat of a foolhardy endeavour. But at least the cuckoos and wrens were enjoying themselves…
Fly Fishing On The East Dart

A day spent on Dartmoor, fishing the upper reaches of the East Dart above Postbridge. I was fishing a traditional northern wet fly called the Broughton Point, casting it upstream into likely looking spots. The upper reaches of the East Dart belong to the Duchy of Cornwall. Day permits are available through the Fish Pass website and App.
Early Morning Dry Fly - River Twiss

With the high temperatures, i thought it would be more rewarding to concentrate my fishing to the early mornings and late evenings. The trout was caught on a size 16 Pheasant Tail dry fly (old school). And the rod was a 8ft Garrison split cane made by Luke Bannister. Fishing a 10ft home made leader of 2lb.

    Mr. Smith, when you say "as with all North Country spiders, we tie them in at the tip", I've come across a half dozen other variations of tying the hackle in the historical and current literature. Why do you prefer this method as shown in your video?

    • @thedalesangler
      @thedalesangler Před 14 hodinami

      Because it is easier to wrap the hackle when it is tied in by the tip. It also illuminates a greater part of the bulk and creates a neater looking fly.

    Hi Robert, a lovely fly. I'm intrigued by the 'blue' in the name as you don't leave any silk in view apart from the darkened down blue whip finish. Feels like you could have used any colour silk or other thread. As I don't have any heron feathers, would grey goose do the same job? Cheers

    • @thedalesangler
      @thedalesangler Před 4 dny

      Wynn doesn't mention a shade of tying silk. I just used a vintage blue Pearsalls just to keep it in line with the fly's name. In theory you could use any colour and type of silk or tying thread.

      Hi Patrick, I'm by no means an expert on the Dartmoor rivers. But i would try the East Dart above Postbridge. The river has some nice small pools and runs which hold some good fish. You will need a short rod to be able to cast under trees and into the pools. Hope this helps.

    Very difficult day yesterday , I was probably out round the same time as yourself but just over the way on the other side … I came away with 3 stunning spotties over both upper sections,manage to rise and miss a few more …., spooked a biggie that took off and I never saw again . A 16 cdc and elk took one , a very sparse cdc upwing pattern took the second and the last one fell to a small black magic emerger .. Came away with a big smile on my face and a slightly better understanding of how to go about fishing these two rivers but still have a long way to go to crack the code on these clever fish that’s for sure … Truly brilliant day regardless of catching or not 👍
