    Google and Amazon both have the scale bud Google has billions of web search users and Amazon is this internet if an app is running on AWS which is likely their are also running their ai and by proxy all their users w that ai on AWS

    • @mattderron
      @mattderron Před 18 hodinami

      I'm not talking about scale in terms of compute power. I'm talking about scale in terms of amount of users interacting daily with their AI and the depth of knowledge they have about them. Google - yes, because they have CZcams and they've integrated Gemini into Google search and Docs. However the difference with Google is that they haven't introduced Gemini into CZcams on the consumer side yet, and while Gemini is integrated into Search - their user data will depend on how many other Google tools they use. Amazon has like maybe 350 million users? So we're talking 10x less than Meta in this context. Again, I'm not talking about servers and compute scale, I'm talking about how many daily interactions by different people into their AI models.

    • @mattderron
      @mattderron Před 18 hodinami

      VLO will get cut eventually. It was very close to getting cut in March (I talked about it in my newsletter then) but I was making so many other changes and it had been such a good performer that I held on. Basically, VLO doesn't actually fit my strategy. It's a Narrow moat business (although refiners aren't really being built in the US) with pretty much no growth (negative like you say). But it's had a good run in my portfolio and tends to trade in big up and down swings. I would expect me to get out of it (or trim a good amount at least) whenever it's on the upswing again.

    Warren Buffett's perspective on dividends is that they may not be beneficial if a company has better uses for its capital to promote growth. Instead of focusing on dividends, he suggests investing in companies with growth potential. However, some investors see dividends as a way to generate income. It's possible to create a portfolio that generates a dividend income of $50k-70k with a $1 million investment.

    Stock picking itself is still generally speculation, and if you aren't it requires a lot of hard work. You don't really know for sure what's going to happen, you only take your best bet. In that regard, the index is pretty much the best risk free brain dead way of growing wealth. The market consistently trends upward over time, and will likely continue to do so (even if its only due to inflation and population growth related demand). If you like gambling or learning how to read financial statements and economic data, then you can handle individual stock picks. If not, just index. Only 10% of the population can handle stock picking, the rest should just index.

    How did I miss that video?? L Any how, I think the emphasis is to understand and agree with where the Co is going and yes the stock price becomes secondary. I will take META as an example again. For a period of time I was not believing on their "promises" especially their AI development. So I had a bunch of META stock at +/-90$ and I sold a about 40% of it, it was not paying dividend and the stock was at 180$ fo by selling some the rest was "Free" in my portfolio. Then I learned more about what they were doing with their AI (medical solutions, etc) and I decided to hold to the rest of my precious shares. Of course now that stock is 330% what I paid for and has started paying dividends. I now understand the business better, have more confidence in the stock and do not intend to sell. Do I regret selling some of it? Not really at the time it gave me cash to purchase some 3M and Apple stock that I thought were a good opportunity and it turned out to be correct. Cheers, a.

    With most of your portfolio being the top market caps in the S&P, how you expecting to beat it? (Not meant in a negative way) Just hoping your mix outpaces it? Also you should make a video on small caps. I feel like those are such an enigma unless you have some sort of inside intel...

      I explained this in a different video - simple strategy. My allocation to some of those top companies is higher than the index. If they do well, they will contribute more to my portfolio than the index. Ie, Amazon is 3.6% of the index, it's 13% of my portfolio. Nvidia is 6% of the index, it's 17% of my portfolio. They do well, they will contribute higher returns to my portfolio versus the market. The idea for me is picking the winning companies that I think will keep winning...instead of trying to find a small cap gem that will become the next winner. There's significantly more risk in trying to do that. I'm not against small caps, but in general I don't start really looking at a company until they are profitable (operating income > 0). Many interesting small caps aren't there yet. The ones that are frequently are in lower growth / lower margin businesses. Every once in a while there's something there that I will take interest in, but in general that's not my strategy.

      @mattderron Thanks for the explanation! Seems weird that the main strategy for all small caps is to reinvest all profit, take on a ton of debt, promise explosive growth, and hope the future is bright. But I guess that's the only option when they're up against the Amazons of the world. Definitely more risky to invest in but it feels like that's the only place you find those 10x types of wins

      I get it, the only thing I would say is...Apple did a 10x over the last 10 years and they were already a big company. Obviously Nvidia more recently. If you can find a big small cap winner it's huge, but I think there's a lot of opportunity even in the big companies and they're not all that hard to find. They feel almost too easy so folks pass them up ("money's already made" etc). I don't know, lot of different ways to invest people just have to find what works best for them.

    I really dont need an ETF if I want to have 50% of that in 3 companies.

    Great video, Matt. Changes to your portfolio should help you beat the benchmark S&P 500 in the coming months. Thank you for your video.

    I believe in having mixed investments. I see a lot of dividend stocks as more stable and safer than growth stocks
