    A good free alternative would be finviz screener, and it has most, if not all, of the metrics

    • @mattderron
      @mattderron  Před 3 měsíci +2

      Finviz is good as well and has a lot of criteria. I couldn’t find projected revenue growth and FCF margin there though last time I checked so not sure if I just missed it or if they’ve added it since

    This was SUPER helpful, Matt! After using the screener, can you do a video showing step-by-step how you analyze a company?

  • @Coyotehello
    @Coyotehello Před 3 měsíci

    I actually do not use screeners often. You had a video about seeking alpha a few months ago and I found it interesting to play with but I usually stay with about 2x dozen stocks I know and a small reserve in my portfolio for stocks that intrigues me, or that I received a tip on from investor friends do some research on and decide to buy.
    Cheers,
    a.

    Thanks for the video Matt. I certainly use the similar tool available in TIKR. However, when it comes to new stocks I tent to check also some content available in Twitter. I totally agree with you: one thing is finding a prospect, the other is running the full analysis process on it and decide. Thanks for your great content. As usual, watching you from Bogotá.

    Hi Matt, thanks for the video. I use the Schwab screener at times which is also good I would say. Sometimes I also like to look into the etfs and see what they have in terms of "cheaper" stocks. Getting some ideas from financial newspapers is also a good start I would say.

    • @mattderron
      @mattderron  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Schwab's is really good too. They have some things that the Seeking Alpha one doesn't have (ROIC for example) but then don't have other things that Seeking Alpha's does have (Projected Revenue Growth, FCF Margin, etc). If they would just combine the two, it would be even better lol

    Great video Matt you should make more content like this. Maybe like 2-3 parts how you research stock, what would be your next step in resarch and few more detals before you buy stock. Great chanal, like your videos a lot... Many greetings from Croatia👋, and I wish you all the best.😉

    Hi Matt it looks nice a handy screening tool. One very important criteria I didn’t see you experiment with is ROIC which I think is one of the most important aspects to look at to determine management effectiveness and how good they are at capital allocation. Does it allow for the ROIC average of 5 years? It was either Charlie Munger or Warren Buffet that said over the long term a great company should return its shareholders the average ROIC in average annual growth. I make sure the average of my stock portfolio is over 20 across all stocks as it is just another quality indicator to be aware of

    • @mattderron
      @mattderron  Před 3 měsíci +1

      It doesn’t have ROIC but it has ROTC which has some similarities and that is available in the screener

    Hi Matt. Great video. I use the Alpha Picks service which saves me work and time. What do you think of the Alpha Quant grading?

    • @mattderron
      @mattderron  Před 3 měsíci

      That's awesome, how do you like Alpha Picks? I haven't used the service, just heard about it.
      I use Quant grades like other grades (Schwab, Chase, Marketgrader, etc) - I like using them as a datapoint in my research, but it's usually a complement to whatever research I'm doing. I won't make a decision based on grading alone, but trying to understand why something is graded the way it is helps me if that makes sense.

      @@mattderronWell it is ok. They assure you that it has beaten the market so far. I bought 6 stocks half of them are outperforming the market and half are currently underperforming, but it is supposed to be a long term investment (1 year as a minimum). Let’s see how it goes.2 picks per month.

    Any comment on MSci? I was a firm believer in the company...

    • @mattderron
      @mattderron  Před 3 měsíci +1

      No, seemed like an overreaction to me. Earnings were fine. Expenses went up due to acquisitions. Some people assume it’s the valuation resetting to align better with the projected growth rate. Seems like the most logical explanation.
      I just added to it yesterday lmao so was a painful haircut, but I believe in the company too. Holding for a while

    How do I find companies?
    Reading books about Warren Buffett & went from there.
    I still enjoy reading financial statements & interpreting presentations.
    Very long version:
    former treasurer for a very small company.. I was VERY popular & received LOTS of advice from bankers.
    No exaggeration.. non-stop advice (sales pitches) & not one agreed with the other.
    Internet was new & (at that time) no one used internet like today.
    My supervisor & I always talked about investing. .. he loaned me some books about an investor named Warren Buffett.
    I’ve basically stumbled my way to where I am today.
    My greatest strength is my addiction to saving money.
    I am not wealthy.. not even close.. but; I have enough.
    I switched careers & work blue collar jobs.. might go back to the office someday. 🇨🇦

    Another great video as always, thanks heaps Matt!
    The problem for me though is not about how to find good companies to look into. Instead it’s more about having too many companies that I’d love to own a fraction of 😂
    It can easily turn into lazy investing (buy a lot but not actively tracking them), and I personally don’t find it make sense to build my own version of Andrei500 or something lol. So I really need to control myself on this one haha

    • @mattderron
      @mattderron  Před 3 měsíci +1

      This is tough, I have struggled with this as well and I'm slowly moving on from some of those positions. I added companies like WMT when they didn't really fit my goals and strategy because I liked the company. Or maybe I thought something would happen in the economy, etc.
      I'm getting better at "less is more" because like you said, I want to be able to actively track, monitor, and understand them. Ultimately if you're going to have a problem, this is probably an ok one to have lol

      I use it because it has the criteria I want to search by…projected revenue growth, fcf margin etc. I’ve been very transparent with what tools I use in all my videos and my affiliate relationship with Seeking Alpha.
      Honestly this mindset of “give me all the videos and tools for free” and “anything paid for is bad” is a personal choice, so maybe this just isn’t the channel for you. Hope you find something that fits your personal values better

    Stocks screeners won't make people rich. You don't care if people lose their money. What you care about is your affiliate links. Show some respect please

      @mattderron  Před 3 měsíci +8

      Stock screeners won't really help you out. They don't give you any useful info, but you already know that deep down. Why can't you say it? 'Cause if everyone knows the truth, you won't make money selling hope to simple-minded people

    • @mattderron
      @mattderron  Před 3 měsíci +8

      I mean, did you watch the video? I specifically say "stock screening is the beginning of your process, it simply gives you a list of stocks to start researching based on criteria that is important to you. But you still have to do the actual research.
      I made this very clear in the video if you bothered to watch before rushing to comment that I'm doing something shady.
      I would bet there aren't many investing related CZcams channels that are as transparent as mine. But, apparently you want to be mad about something today and accuse people of things they aren't even doing. 🤷🏻‍♂️
