Just for clarity on my NVDA position because I said “I was ok starting my position at these prices” technically that was prices in March when I first bought, but here are NVDA buys in detail in case you want to know about my position:
    3/20/24 - Bought 20 shares at $897.85 / share
    4/8/24 - Bought 10 shares at $872.17 / share
    4/22/24 - Bought 10 shares at $779.06 / share
Total position: 40 shares at $861.73 / share
Currently up 9.8% on my overall cost basis

Just curious, is there a reason you waited to invest in Nvidia? Was there something that held you back about the company itself last year or prior?

    • @mattderron
      @mattderron  Před 2 měsíci +4

I never dug into them before their crazy run up(late 2022 to early 2023) and after that I assumed like many people that they were an overhyped stock with an unrealistic valuation. So I continued to ignore it until March of this year. That’s why I called my analysis video “I finally dug into NVIDIA and here’s what I found.” I was pretty blown away and started a position then.
Sometimes we have to get out of our own way and just do the work and let the analysis speak for itself🤷🏻‍♂️

Honestly it’s really a personal decision. I buy some stocks before earnings and others I’ll wait. It just depends on what my analysis says in terms of value at that time. NVDA has the added issue of having extremely high expectations so it all depends on your perspective on them. If you don’t want to deal with a large potential drop after earnings then you should wait. There’s always a chance that it shoots up higher but again it all depends on your view of the company and how you would feel if it dropped 30% all of a sudden

I think a lot of companies wanting to build their own chips are going to have a hard time. Nvidia is so far ahead of everyone else. They've been building accelerators for decades. If you break down the computations involved in machine learning, you'll see it's very similar to graphics (matrix multiplication). They are far ahead of everyone when it comes to these calculations. They have an entire ecosystem around what they do best - accelerated computing.

The most cost effective way for companies wanting to develop thier own chip is to utilize Nvidia's custom chip services and build on Nvidia's years, and billions in development enabling them to focus on their desired implementations. SaaS and NIM is a high margin area that will add to the bottom line for many years to come.

I loaded up on NVDA options back around $150/share, closed it all out in Jan after tripling the balance of one of my IRAs. I am still running a few deep spreads at around +24% for 3 mos, but I do debate almost every week whether or not I want to pick up a straight stock position (I have a friend who just retired @ 48 with NVDA) .. for the most part I haven't yet because if the near term upside is 20-30%, I can do that after earnings with more options since they are so damned pricey. I have years of regret not just buying NVDA shares on their own that nag at me though... I just don't want to deal with a short term pullback after earnings if that happens.

As far too many speculators are following NVIDIA I don’t think that excellent earnings would be that much relevant for the stock price. The stock could skyrocket to 1000 and then lose 10% in the matter of hours, as it already happened last time. Or there might be some sort of buy the rumors sell the news thing (and we have seen also this before). I’m more interested in the mid term grow of the stock :)

I think NVDA is a great company but its valuation is high and expectations are high. Which means there's a good chance for some pretty wide volatility. Only you can decide for yourself if it's the right time / price for you. There's a chance that it goes down 30% after earnings, or a chance that it shoots up. You just have to decide what makes sense for you. If you don't want to experience the chance that it goes down very quickly, I would wait and see what happens with earnings and then decide.

I think NVidia is a winner but by how much & at what price. I am not buying. I think I am too late and the benefit vs risk is too high. So I am happy with my exposure to the stock via my tech ETFs and I am well stocked on TSMC.
I like what I see with AMD (Lisa Su is Jensen Huang cousin btw!). Very tempting at 160$.
    But:
    I am buying Intel again!
Not because it is cheaper but because I believe in the Co. direction.
Did you do a stock analysis for Intel? I am going to have to look for it...
I think Meteor Lake is going to be a great chip, I believe their new manufacturing processes and innovations at foundry level (7nm) will give them an edge. Earnings have been pointing upward in late 2023 and 1/Q 2024, winning USA military contracts and other clients commitments along the way.
The Hartland project started in 2022, and was scheduled to full production in 2025 but, now delayed to 2026-27. That means it took 7 years to build that manufacturing plant. This is not something other manufacturers will be able to beat, the physical ability to build 7nm, 3D die stack. Finally I also believe their new chip design is a move in the right direction.
    Cheers,
    a.

I’m not so sure about that. CPI came in good, OpenAI unveiling ChatGPT 4o has given new breadth into the AI story along with their talks with an Apple partnership and Alphabet unveiling their own LLM to compete. Big sell offs happen when there’s bearish sentiment and investors think they’re best to take profits. I also think there’s a chance Nvidia announces a stock split on earnings. I see a lot of people not wanting to buy in because they’re looking at the lofty share price (when relative to their revenue growth Nvidia trades at a pretty cheap valuation).
