Photographing Kingfishers: A day to relax
So with just a few days to go before heading to Wales for five days of wildlife photography, I thought I'd take a break and head out to Mike Dunlevy's Kingfisher hide.
I have been working flat out with various projects, weddings, family photos, corporate events, etc. I just needed to take a break and head out to photograph some wildlife for seven therapeutic relaxation before I get organised for my trip to Wales.
I made a visit to Mike's hide last year to photograph the kingfishers a bit earlier in the season when there were a couple of juveniles around however as it's later in the year the juveniles have now fledged it is just the male and female adults coming in to take fish.
The kingfishers didn't disappoint and came in at least a dozen times both male and female kingfishers came in, landing on the perch diving for fish and going off downriver.
It wasn't till the end of the day when I was debating whether or not I should stay or go, then it all came together, and both the male and female kingfishers came in flew from perch to perch landed on the same perch dove in and took some fish, providing me with some great opportunities to get some fantastic images and video of these wonderful birds.

It's the net. These are paid hides with buckets of fish. Proper birders really kick off over these types of setups. You can see what the setup looks like on Google. That said nearly every amazing wildlife shot you ever saw these days was "faked" or paid for so it is what it is I guess.

@pentagramyt417 I've not done so myself but to be fair there isn't much chance of getting shots like these in the wild because you have no idea where a Kingfisher will dive. I guess they have some value in teaching beginners the basics and such although many people are against them as the Kingfishers can hurt themselves when diving in these setups.

Hi Ashley, continuing to watch and enjoy your fantastic films and photography on wildlife. Every time I watch I just have to say out loud “just beautiful “ The bird towards the end is a robin, just a very scruffy one which I have noticed with blue tits as well when they are busy feeding their young. They just don’t have time to preen themselves because they just don’t have the time 😅therefore end up looking particularly scruffy. I’m not sure if they are probably getting a new set of feathers as well towards the end of summer ready for the cooler days to come? Thanks for the enjoyment you give me watching your films anyway 😊👍🏻
