- So with just a few days to go before heading to Wales for five days of wildlife photography, I thought I'd take a break and head out to Mike Dunlevy's Kingfisher hide.
I have been working flat out with various projects, weddings, family photos, corporate events, etc. I just needed to take a break and head out to photograph some wildlife for seven therapeutic relaxation before I get organised for my trip to Wales.
I made a visit to Mike's hide last year to photograph the kingfishers a bit earlier in the season when there were a couple of juveniles around however as it's later in the year the juveniles have now fledged it is just the male and female adults coming in to take fish.
The kingfishers didn't disappoint and came in at least a dozen times both male and female kingfishers came in, landing on the perch diving for fish and going off downriver.
It wasn't till the end of the day when I was debating whether or not I should stay or go, then it all came together, and both the male and female kingfishers came in flew from perch to perch landed on the same perch dove in and took some fish, providing me with some great opportunities to get some fantastic images and video of these wonderful birds.

Another great video Ashley. Brilliant images, love these videos. Cheers
Great hide was in there last year. Well worth a visit
Totally educational & enjoyable ❤❤
Your choice of relaxation is a win win situation, for you and us. Thanks so much, Ashley. Loved the story of the kingfisher chicks queuing in the nest. Never heard of this before.
Very nice. Where I live, we only have the Belted Kingfisher. They are very skittish. The juvis are a bit more tolerant. Would love to get them diving, but my reflexes are just not good enough. Ours are as colorful, but still a beautiful bird. Would love to have a place to have a hide, but around here they are along public parks. I do what I can with what I am given. Have been watching then for years and this years brood seems to be very lazy. I did manage a few nice images of a juvi with a crayfish. Striving and getting the images is part of the fun.
Absolutely great Ashley, you inspire me so much, beautiful pictures and videos
Great vid Ashley as usual I don’t know nothing about photography but love the king fisher and the videos thanks and look forward to the next in wales 👍
Congrats to these amazing captures and videos of that beautiful kingfisher 💙🧡🩵🤩
Great video Ashley, can't beat some good Kingfisher action 👋
Perfect timming capture video and images. Awesome work.
Your photo at 9:52 is absolutely stunning. The crisp sharpress of the image and capturing both the bird and the water looks incredible
Cheers Luke many thanks for the comment, the image was taken on the R6 with the 24-105 RF lens, at f4, 1/2000 sec, ISO-2500 at a focal length of 50mm , yeh itcame out ok, many thanks.
great video and great shots
Great video and some fab shots. Well done👍
Excellent pics Ashley.
You say not the best shot I beg to differ its a fantastic shot.
Cheers Andy 😉👍
Awesome video
The Set up looks like a studio
Hello Ashley. Great photos as always. Can you tell us what focal length you had your 24-105mm set at please?
HI Paul it was set to around 58mm 👍
Great vlog, as always, how do you find the Canon EF 2x III Extender with the 100-500
@@alunlambert7456 hi Alun, many thanks for your comment, don't tend to use any of the extenders on my 100 to 500. I do have the one times extender, however I do find that it makes the images softer and I only tend to use it for video.
@@WildlifePhotographerUK Thank you for replying, I’m just toying with the idea of going back to Canon and was trying to work out my options for a long focal length but not be paying £10000 plus for the big canon lenses
9:50 Great shot but I see an artifact (criss-cross pattern) or am I seeing things?
It's the net. These are paid hides with buckets of fish. Proper birders really kick off over these types of setups. You can see what the setup looks like on Google. That said nearly every amazing wildlife shot you ever saw these days was "faked" or paid for so it is what it is I guess.
@@JoeMaranophotography Ahhh...good to know and thanks for the quick reply!
@FQ8 By chance I happened to see the video thumbnail pop up recommended and thought I would see how many angry comments it had. Luckily none lol
@pentagramyt417 I've not done so myself but to be fair there isn't much chance of getting shots like these in the wild because you have no idea where a Kingfisher will dive. I guess they have some value in teaching beginners the basics and such although many people are against them as the Kingfishers can hurt themselves when diving in these setups.
Where exactly in whales
