Wildlife is Hard to find - Photographing Red Squirrels

- This week I headed out on the only dry day available deciding on where to go proved difficult as I didn't really want to head back to my old local areas I wanted to try and find something new.
So I headed out to the Lake District an area where I've not been very successful in finding wildlife over my past visits so today was just another adventure and exploratory day out.
Heading north I decided to head towards a woodland area that also had open ground and a river an ideal location for river birds and birds of prey.
But once again I was beaten with only a few sightings of wildlife, so after a few hours I decided to head back to a local spot to spend an hour or two with some little red furry friends, the red squirrels.
Not long after once I got the shops I was happy with I decided to go on a tip that someone had mentioned to me about a Tawney owl. So on the back of this, I headed out in the hope that I may just see the owl but I was not holding my breath.
As luck would have it once I arrived at the location the owl was sitting there in the tree but after 30 seconds and a few pictures it decided to go back inside and go to sleep I waited a further two hours but without success, so I will return and spend the day sat in my car using it as a heart to photograph the tawny owl.

Great stuff loved this once again 👍
I totally agree with you about not giving locations. There is a saying and one I think of every time someone asks, it’s not the one person you tell it’s the ten they tell and so on.
Absolutely cracking shots. You got them to pose beautifully.Well done.
Many thanks @colinfreear4749 👍
Cracking video Ashley, top images too. As you said the light in the squirrel image was awesome 😎 what an image 📸
cheers Lee 👍
Great photos of the red squirrels!…
Cheers @frednorman1👍
I'm with you on not giving out locations. One our daily dog walk we spotted 3 short eared owls hunting a large field. Stupidly, I posted a photo of one on my Facebook for my friends who can't get out into nature, to enjoy - and another FB friend asked me where it was. As he is a wildlife photographer I told him, thinking I could trust him to keep it to himself. Nope, he told others and of course, next time we went past there they were.... We don't go there now, but fortunately on another of our local dog walks we spotted another SEO, and I got photos and great footage - did not share it though. Lesson learned.
Hi
@SkylarkFields, many thanks for the comment Yes I completely agree with you, I do of course meet other wildlife photographers and we do chat and talk and we do share locations I have been given a couple of locations now and never told a sole I have even gone to such lengths as even misleading the direction of the wildlife in some videos just so people won't go to the area where the actual wildlife is and they will walk the opposite way, 😳😜
It's just nice to keep a few places to just a few people and then sometimes when you find that little spot of your own you keep it to yourself, unfortunately, I did a video at a location a few weeks back that is quite well-known with other wildlife photographers, and anyway on the back of that video I was told that last weekend when the chap that came to fill some squirrel feeding boxes arrived there were 25 photographers in this little area and I felt so guilty for putting that up, but anyway lesson learned won't be doing that again
@@WildlifePhotographerUK I have learned that you are damned if you do disclose a location, and you are damned if you don't! I have decided that if I see something of interest in a public place, where anyone and everyone might walk, such as an RSPB reserve or public footpath, then I will say where my photo was taken as they will probably spot it themselves anyway. Anything anywhere else, I shall keep to myself! I do try and edit out landmarks and identifying places from my photos now though. I guess that would be more difficult with video footage! Don't beat yourself up about the squirrel event, though, you weren't to know that would happen.
I enjoy your videos, so keep up the good work! I thought I was subscribed but looks like I'm not so will do so now!
The Red Squirrel should be the national animal of England. Currently it's the Lion, seems outdated to me? Yet, the humble Red Squirrel is a symbol of resilience, overcoming the aggressive attacks invading its natural surroundings, but somehow slowly making a comeback. #RedSquirrelForUK
Those 2 Red Squirrels are so cute!
'Squirrel Nutkin poses for Ashley' - and what a shoot it was... gorgeous images. Loved it when you did the piece to camera and the squirrel was sneaking up on you :)
That Tawny Owl is a first for me, Ashley (from a live in the field). Thanks so much for sharing your trips.
As always a great video and thanks for sharing
Very beautiful
Probably its tough to find them because you are looking for tiny squirrels as opposed to larger deer or bigger animals that are not native to uk
