  • So it's been a wet few weeks and not a lot happening, so today so a break in the weather I decided to head to my local nature reserve Brockholes which is around 20 minute's drive from me.
    I have not been here for around six months so it was nice to get back out to a local patch, and once again familiarize myself with the area and the local wildlife.
    Brockholes Nature Reserve is quite a diverse area hosting a great range of wildlife from Roe deer, badgers, foxes, and otters to waterfowl of all types, along with the weasel and grey squirrels.
    Will it be a public holiday and New Year's Day it was bound to be a little busy with families taking the children out for a walk in the sunny weather, and playing in the local park.
    People also come for walks along here with their dogs many of them are always on their lead and with responsible owners but there are always a few that break the rules and feel that they are special, today was just one of those occasions where we had a special person with their dog not on a lead.
    This resulted in their dog chasing the roe deer, and local wildlife down an Embankment and scaring them off into a neighboring field , not only is not having your dog on a lead not allowed, but it also has a negative impact on the wildlife, and could quite easily have resulted in the roe deer being injured and then having to be put down.
    With all that being said it was a fantastic day and lovely to be out again at the local nature reserve capturing some of its wildlife definitely going back once it starts drying up as it was extremely muddy and I've got a big job now clearing up all the mud off my tripods rucksack and boots.

    Enjoy your videos - thanks. On this occasion as you have chosen to include the dog owner incident I was disappointed that with a CZcams channel that you did not condemn the owner more forcefully. Those like you and I who care about the UK's diminishing wildlife and habitat should be less than equivocal about dog owners who ignore the signs and allow their dogs to harass wildlife. We have all seen it happen many many times and what should result is that in the case of Brockholes, Lancashire WWT should either put in some enforcement measures or have the chops to ban dog walkers from its sites altogether. Equally all other organisations who caretake designated nature reserves should do the same. You could argue that those watching your channel are 'the converted' so no good preaching to them but without a vociferous lobby for change nothing will.

      Hi @kimwedgbury8518, many thanks for your comment. Yeh I could have gone on a bit more of a rant, but to be fair I opt for the quieter side of life these days, there is always someone that is ready to have a go at you whatever you say, and no matter how right you are, they will always argue your wrong. To be fair, I think the video and my reaction shouting at the owner was enough, not that they took a blind bit of notice, or for that matter even realised their dog had run off. I have had dogs in the past, so I am not anti-dog, just anti-idiot dog owner. 👍😆😜

      Well said, both of you. All too many times I have encountered irresponsible dog owners who think they are special and immune to rules, regulations and common sense. I have in the past challenged them, some respond well, some can't bothered but also some who get 'arsey' to the point that I no longer want to argue with some muppet while I walk around with 12k worth of camera gear.

      TBF I've worked in nature reserves/SSSIs/Country Parks and even when wearing uniform its a waste of breath talking to the idiot section among the dog owners. Best you get is false acknowledgement and they carry on as before, but often its abuse and them informing you of their rights, and sometimes threats. I've spoken to rangers that are currently off sick with stress due largely to actions of ignorant dog owners.
      Until the law is changed and enforced, dog owners effectively can do what they want. Even with bylaws and enforcement orders, they can give false names or refuse to engage when fined

    I have just binge watched some of your videos after finding your channel. Many thanks for all the effort that must go into them. As a relatively new wildlife photographer (13 months) I have already found that it is essential to get up at 3am in the summer. Not to catch the golden hour but to avoid the dog walkers.

    Great video and commentary. So frustrating and aggravating when the dog ran in though, and I think you handled that admirably, even if you were seething inside. I am a dog owner and would be mortified if my dog did that! I felt sorry for the deer having such a fright. They just want to live a peaceful life.

    Happens far too often, I've even seen birders with dogs off the lead at reserves in the past. Only yesterday had somebody let their dog chase some swans into the water and had no control as it swum after them. As much as I love dogs they need to be banned from reserves, far too many people causing disturbances in these wildlife refuges, my local haunt over at Lunt Meadows is a nightmare for dog walkers at times.

    Like you we’re only 1/2 an hour from Brockholes and love it. Equally frustrated at the number of people who let their dogs off the lead and can’t control them.

      @Betty77168 Před 7 měsíci

      I actually think the whole system is wrong, dogs off their leads is problematic, but I think having dogs on leads is inhumane, a dog's instinct is to smell, wander, explore and run, chase, meet other "packs", but they're not able to do any of this on a lead. I have seen way too many dogs being yanked even for just looking at another dog or trying to smell something interesting and intriguing.

      @mickbryan8908 Před 7 měsíci +2

      @@Betty77168 fully agree with a trained dog that responds when called and in the right area, not where animals are grazing and certainly not on a well signposted nature reserve.

    • @Betty77168
      @Betty77168 Před 7 měsíci

      @@mickbryan8908 That's what I mean, dogs having to be put on leashes, it's the right thing to do as far as the wildlife is concerned and where there are animals grazing, completely agree, but I am not a fan of dogs as pets especially on leads, a lot of dogs nowadays are not able to roam freely on farms or open land where they thrive, nowadays, they're confined to small indoor spaces and when they are allowed out say once or twice a day they're restricted from any normal doggy movement by being on a lead. Personally, as much as I absolutely love dogs, I would make it harder for people to own them - it's not fair on the dogs unless you can give them other doggy company, lots of open outdoor space and plenty of exercise, and most of these dogs barely get any of that.

    Hi Ashley, I enjoyed the video, I nearly went there recently to Brockholes, but we ended up elsewhere, will give it a go this year 👍 Nice footage and stills Mate 📷 I agree with you, if it states dogs on leads then it should be followed, if you wish to let em off go somewhere its allowed. See you on the next one 👍

    If you are going to the Cairngorms, I can highly recommend the Findorn valley (Starting at Findhorn bridge) - take a slow drive all along and keep your eyes peeled - you can see a lot from the car, and the other is Lochindorb - good for Grouse the whole area, around the loch itself good for waders and Divers.

    • @WildlifePhotographerUK
      @WildlifePhotographerUK  Před 6 měsíci

      many thanks for the comment and information, yeah spent a day down in Findorn Valley, saw some raptors kestrels red kites and plenty of buzzards. is Lochindorb Grouse red or black? I would imagine that the lock will be frozen as they all seem to be frozen where we are here.

      Red Grouse - Yeah, I bet it might be frozen, its quite a big Loch - but it is surrounded by heather moor.

    I was sat in the hide here further along from martins hide and heard rustling, turned around and mink came out half metre away with grass snake in its mouth. Just walked by.

    When you turned that GoPro around the scenery looked beautiful (even iPhones take beautiful video). Seems the whole world has some 'special' dog owners. Even so, you have some lovely sharp footage of the Roe Deer in very busy scrub. Getting to know your birds quite well: Bullfinch, Blue Tit, Nuthatch, Great Tit. Lovely shots. Wishing you well in the Cairngorms, Ashley.

    Unfortunately there are dog owners who think the rules about 'dogs on leads' doesnt apply to them. That they have their dogs under control. Until they dont. No consideration for the wildlife or for those watching it. Brockholes is 20 minutes from my Mums. It is a great environment to see the local wildlife despite its location near the motorway.

    Genuine question, in your opening, does the camo make a productive difference to how the wildlife interact with you, and the photo opportunities you get?
    As for me, its only rained twice in blackpool.
    All of November and December.🤣🤣

    • @WildlifePhotographerUK
      @WildlifePhotographerUK  Před 7 měsíci

      Hi Frank, yes it makes a big difference, the animals can see your white bits very clearly against the woodland and grass etc, if you look out across a park and look at the people you will notice their white faces and hands, which is exactly what the animal sees, also the human shape, disguising your shape also helps. I have had deer come right past me, as they can not see me but they stop and sniff as they can smell me but can not find me, and tend not to run off. 👍

    I have a GoPro but recently added a DJI Osmo Pocket 3. Its amazing! Great for VLOGing and is far better than the GoPro in low light. Highly recommend this as its light and portable and can also attach to you or camera and shoots 4k stabilised with face track.

    I can’t go anywhere without darn dog owners off leads. I’ve had large dogs charging at me, dogs off leads on private land with trails that have now been closed because of dog owners and yesterday a pit bull in a national park where ground birds nest and signs to keep dogs on a leash. 🤦🏻‍♂️
