  • In this week's video, I explore Leighton Moss try out than U RF400 F 2.8 lens from Canon, and find myself on a hill in the middle of the night photographing the geminid meteor shower.
I had previously gone out a few days earlier to create this video however the rivers were in full flood and no river birds could be found anywhere along the shores of the river Wharf in Yorkshire, so I decided to head further into the Dales and take a walk, where I came across a pair of red kites which is always nice to see over in the valleys of Yorkshire before heading back towards the Strid where I was hoping to get some photos and videos of this powerful river, unfortunately, that was also fully flooded and the strid was completely buried under the water.
So Wednesday was going to be my next outing where I had agreed to meet up with a friend of mine Alan, at Leighton Moss RSPB center, I decided on an early start and got down to lower hide before sunrise, the reserve was partially flooded so Wellington boots were the order of the day, unfortunately, lower hide t was very quiet, as was the Causeway hide, so at around 9:00 AM I met up with Alan and mark and we photographed some bearded reedling's.
Unfortunately, there was a power failure at the RSPB centre and surrounding homes which meant that we could not get anything to eat or drink at the RSPB cafe, with a notice saying that it may be open later this afternoon if power is restored.
So we headed off around the reserve visiting several hides and managing to photograph the marsh harriers and a couple of redwings and fieldfares.
As the day went on I realised that sunset was going to be fantastic, and an opportunity to photograph the Starling murmuration of thousands of starlings as they flew in to roost in the Reed beds here at Leighton Moss.
Upon leaving Leighton Moss later in the evening, I headed off to Gummers How, a hill that overlooks Lake Windermere, where I was hoping to be able to photograph the geminid meteor shower that was forecast to start from around 7:30 PM and on into the night, after spending three hours on the summit and only seeing around 20 to 25 meteorites the cloud eventually came in and blocked all view of the stars however I think I may be able to get at least one good photo and compile it into one shot with all the images I got.
All in all a fantastic day here at Leighton Moss photographing the wildlife.

That was cool! It's great to see that you guys have swarms of starlings there in the same way that we do. Thanks for bringing us along!

Cracking stuff Ash. That's 100 lines for you... "I must not forget my camera" lol. And asking for a coffee delivery to the hide, well, no comment except - I like your style! 🤣😄

You can't beat a good Starling Show. I'm still waiting for them to build up numbers at North Pier.
Just finished work this morning so I never got a chance to see the Comet Shower so I'm quite glad it was cloudy to help me cope with working nights during the best show in town.
    BTW
Has sir been having fun with Magic Masks?
    🤣🤣

Really enjoyable, Ashley. Loved seeing that Starling murmuration; never seen anything like it (not even Budgerigar). Great still at the end, of the Geminid meteorites, loved it.
My two-bits worth: I don't think you need that big fixed lens; your video of the Marsh Harriers earlier this year was fabulous.

Get the 400mm 2.8! Tell the wife there's no point in being the richest man in the graveyard!

Lovely shots! Will you be trying the RF 200-800mm? It’s slightly cheaper than that 400mm 2.8 :)

yeh it is alot cheaper but I don't think i would be using a lens like that, I just don't think it is worth the money, it is not an L lens. so i doubt it is going to be as sharp as the 100-500mm, and at 200mm at 6.3, that's just a bit too much. I think Canon focuses too much on the big primes for wildlife and nothing in between other than the 100-500mm on the table.

@@WildlifePhotographerUK there’s supposedly a RF 200-500 f4 coming somewhere in 2024. Probably will have a hefty price though.
I’ve preordered the 200-800 to complement my RF 100-400. Considered going for a 100-500 + 1.4x instead, but it’s quite a bit pricier and I’m not usually able to go out early/late in the day, so aperture is less important to me at this stage of my photography.
