Hi. My name is Paul Cook and I’m a guitarist from Edinburgh. I’m happy earning my living as a driving instructor but my passions lie in guitar music. No plans to be anything other than a CZcams guitarist, having reached an age where I’ve kinda done the whole “band thing”. Loved it and I’ll cherish the memories but now it’s life in the slow lane, playing for the camera. I also like to busk, where I’ll turn up in a town centre and play along to backing tracks for tourists walking by.

Beautiful tone. Great piece of music. Cheers.
Beautiful! Not many capture Roy’s nuances. Well done! Thanks and the bonus Roy (Gallagher)! My favorite Roys in one vid!
Cool stuff!
You should go on tour!!!! Nice work.
Thank you thank you!
A million miles away. from Irish Tour '74.. always my favourite Rory Intro. Nicely done Paul
Thanks Paul. I've loved the sounds of Roy since I heard him and recorded him off the radio when I was a kid, and didn't know who he was until I saw a CZcams video 30 years later. He was the Rory of the Tele??? Love it. Many thanks, Paul.
Thanks man, delighted you liked my vid. And yes, I totally agree he was the “Rory of the Tele”🤣, absolutely. They both had that “raw” and unpolished sound. Fabulous
Lovely, as usual Paul. Nice one :):):):):)
Thanks Burtnekkid, cheers 🍻
Very nice playing dude. That tele is a beaut. Don’t ever sell it.
Thanks Floaty, I’m delighted you like my Tele. I love it too. 🍻
Classy Paul keep these coming
Thank you Grant 😊🤘
That's my favorite guitar of yours. It's in the right hands and I love to hear where you take it.
Thanks Fred, I do adore that guitar. I’m delighted you like it too, cheers for watching 🍻
I love Buchanan and you've obviously captured his style but with less attack and power. Must say I love it being smoother. Well done Paul. Not many reference my hero.
Thank you Robert, I appreciate your words. Cheers to you 🍻
I don't personally live and die on the advice of Mr. Tom. He knows he is not the best guitar player who ever lived, but he is quick to tell you he is better than you and while that may be true, it's not very kind. His ego may be warranted, but gets in the way of some people actually respecting the guy. On the other hand, you never project any negativity, and are expressive without making stupid faces! I enjoy your videos and have never heard you rush, not once. But maybe I just don't know any better. I will learn more from your videos because you take the time to actually teach, not to preach.
Well thank you for those words Mike! I appreciate that. In fact I even showed your comment to my wife, as it’s cheered me up big time. 🍻
Great stuff Paul (as usual)!!! Your phrasing is at high level. That is the real guitar playing, not distortion based fretboard grinding.
Well thank you sir, your comment leaves me smiling. Cheers 🍻
Paul, I look forward to every episode of your guitar magic , wisdom, and wit. For a long time it has been clear the influence of the great Tele slinger, Roy B. in your repetoire. You have become so relaxed and facile with his melodies, flavor, and feel yet I appreciate your personal embellishments that make them your own. I think he would as well. Well done sir.
What a lovely comment! Thanks Tim, I appreciate that. 🍻
Cheers mate!🍻 Brad Paisley also comes to mind with your style of playing.😉 Keep in mind that Tom is a master of rug pulling.😂🤣🤙
Thanks GW. Yeah, I need to learn to be more secure in my own mind 🤣. Cheers for watching my friend, and enjoy the rest of your weekend.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 You already know the first rule of being a musician, just know your abilities and be confident where you are. When you come across new sounds and skills, add them as you go along. The worst thing wr can do is compare ourselves to others because they have just as many insecurities, but perhaps they hide they a bit better. I learned very young that there will always be people who are bigger, stronger, faster, and more skilled than I am. All I can do is be me. If I want to be better at something then I need to seek out the mean to accomplish that.😉 Of course there is always room for improvement, but be comfortable with where you are and chase what you want to improve and steal it by all means!😂🤣🤙
Never in my life have I ever considered Roy Buchanan and Rory Gallagher to have much in common regarding their guitar playing
For me, they’re both very “raw” and unpolished sounding…. I can hear brute force in their playing.
A million miles away, such a great intro from Irish Tour 74, nice one man
Thanks man, yeah an amazing player was Rory
Great to be the first in the chat to say fantastic and thank you. Best wishes from Glasgow 👍🎸❤️🎼
Thanks for being the first comment Frank 🤣🤘🍻
Am I the only one who knows what he did there. Close encounters of the 3rd kind
Well done Old-dog-jams, you are correct!
Great playing and sweet tone. What amp and pedals are you using? Thanks
Thanks 👍. This was my Cornell Romany 12, which is my favourite amp. Reverb was courtesy of Strymon Flint. On the jazzmaster clip I added a JHS Emperor (pitch shifting vibrato). And for a very occasional bit of feedback I stood on the Digitech Freq-out. The looper was my NUX JTC Drum & Looper 👍
Really nice review, appreciate it Paul.
Thank you Derek, cheers
paul i’m sure you’ve been asked this countless times and it’s probably doing your head in at this stage but i have to ask myself. how on gods green earth have you gotten that good at guitar, like seriously; i truly would kill to play like you and i was hoping you could give me some insight on what practice looked like for a younger paul to get to where you are now
What a lovely comment! Thanks man. The best way to answer this is probably to refer you to a wee video I did a while back, callled “my life story so far” czcams.com/video/iTBzaeqLbi0/video.htmlsi=X-nesrPFkNhDqqyO. Hope this helps 😊
Same issue. Mine is brand new and sucks. Never again.
I think the flatwounds sound fantastic!
Thanks mjt 👍
You play it so well. Love my 57 historic. Mine was previously owned by an alt rock god and he put a ‘50s style wind Lindy Fralin in there and it is so sweet. Pure and yet so dirty.
Thanks Richard 👍
Just discovered your chanel. Wow such a great tone and playing. Do you have the amp settings as a patch? Thank you
Thanks honey10music, I’m delighted you liked the vid. As regards saving the settings…. no I wouldn’t know where to begin with that unfortunately.
Ive got to say Paul after recently visiting your site and being new to the Katana i have found it invaluable for creating the sounds that i like, your style of playing and how your layed back approach to the non technical side of the amp to people like myself makes for easy viewing but what would settings sound like with single coils. I have purchased a used mk2 100w 1x12 and tried and failed with the Katana updates, tone studio and all manner of programing this amp its very nice to see someone get very good tones from the stand alone amp. Thank you showing the step by step way of creating decent tones.
Thank you Paul, I’m delighted you liked the vid 👍. Comments like yours, make it a pleasure to post vids.
Hi Paul, absolutely wonderful tones. It would be great if you could show the Katana amp settings for Sultans, Telegraph road, Goin home - similar to the screen shot you provided of the amp settings with brothers in arms. The warmth and depth of your tone is inspiring. Cheers!
Thanks Andrew. And yes, that’s a fair point about showing the amp settings.
strange... but I carefully listened guitar free playing fully ! bravo
Absolutely beautiful intro. Thank you for that. Edit: I’m about 12 minutes in now.. I have to say wonderful and raw playing the whole way through. You got my like and subscribe. You will be influencing my playing from now on.
Well thank you sir, I’m delighted you liked my playing. And cheers for subscribing 🍻👍
I always recommend learning Peter Frampton's solo in Natural Born Woman/Boogie. There's a lot of techniques in it, in a short space of time. It has big span too! That's what you remember. The 'Arabian' sound is in the harmonic minor scale, in the H,W+H,H section, but you can stack those sequences vs playing the entire harmonic minor scale. A lot or eastern scales are in 2 parts, an upper and lower part. The diatonic modes are the technically the same, in that you can split and rejoin the upper and lower halves, on the fly to change a mode mid way. Unless you play the 6 notes, upper and lower notes of the octave and the 4 notes of the HWH sequence, the mode hasn't been defined. If the mode has a halftone start or end it's just 5 notes.
Beautiful playing 🙌🏼
Thank you Robert 👍
Fantastic effortless playing! You really show the versatility of the Les Paul! In the right hands it can handle just about any style.
Thanks Fredrik, delighted you liked my playing 👍
I have been playing for 22 years. I also worked in a guitar shop for 6 years. I have played soooooo many guitars and the Riviera with minis is in my top 5 of all time 🥰
Sound is all about technique. very very GREAT !!!
Thanks arans, glad you liked the vid 👍
Love your playing mate! Thanks for the shout out ;)
Hi Jedd! It’s always a thrill when someone as esteemed as yourself stops by my wee guitar show. Thank you man, it’s appreciated. 👍🍻
Thanks! And intro jam had a lot of tasty noogies I’ll be stealing.
Thanks Grant. Steal away 😊
Hi Paul, I love this. The bit on your Jazzmaster was pure heaven. Wonderful tones. I will watch your breakdown and see if I can get my hands around it. Thank you for sharing this 😊
Thank you Thor! Might be interesting to hear how it sounds on the Yamaha guitalele 😊
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Ha ha, that would be totally amazing. Listen, I have one more week of vacation, so why don't I bring it to Scotland and we could do a duet? Maybe busking in Princes Street?
@@GUITARSGIZMOS I can see the headlines - Paul and Thor rock Princes Street 🤘
what a great jam! subbed
Thank you satchrules, delighted you liked it 🍻
I love weird notes so rock n roll
Yeah, TOUCH
You've amassed a large theory vocabulary for someone that doesn't find it important in focus. Not a criticism. I come to the instrument from the other side. I'm a maths head. Eventually i have to understand the theory of what I'm doing so my head can rest. Your point is the most important part though. Your ear knows what it likes. Don't accept dictation from other sources. I love the values of letting your ear experience and dictate. Your ear is the ultimate teacher and critic. Thanks for the continued posts as I so greatly enjoy them. Cheers!
Thank you Kevin. And yes, you must forgive my ranting about Theory - I have accumulated various chips on my shoulder over the years 🤣
Looks like he collects books too.😅
Sounds so cool... Why, I'll wager you could coax a snake out of a basket (!)
Thank you Jonny, I should give that a try 🤣
You are a fantastic guitarist, I wholeheartedly recommend that you listen to SMAK Group and Vlatko Stefanovski from the band Leb i Sol
Very nice touch. It seems so bloody easy when you play it, dude!
Thanks so much jutukka 👍
Paul, it is such a treat when you drop a new video. I really enjoy your playing and your breakdowns, keep it up!
Thank you Bazilbrushrocks, your words have made me smile. Cheers
i want to try this. any particular brand to order? or will any brand do the job???
I reckon any decent brand will be fine. I chose Bare Knuckle 550k 👍
Classy and tasteful
Thank you Matthias 🍻
