I use my Cornell romany 12 at home with 6v6 , great combo!! 6v6.sweeter highs and lows. More like a princeton. It IS worth a try
Roland jazz, chorus.....King Of Clean!❤ Nice laid back stuff.
I have a old roland jazz chorus...I bought it because Paul weller used them in The Jam..and johnny Marr of The Smiths...along with vox ac30..which I also had..( his guitar tones on The Jam sound affects were great ).....ok so I imagine not many Jam Paul Weller or Johnny Marr fans here were totally self indulgent guitar meandering that only guitar players enjoy...(and to be fair I'm a guitar nerd myself..my wife summed it up ..years ago to me..she comes home im stoned listening to miles Davis after midnight CD..and she says "OK I get it you can play a saxophone..and go widdle widdle .
Now learn how to write a song like ed sheeren perfect..".ok so its a trumpet but hey she thinks westlife are better than the kinks and beatles..and Elvis is better than all of them..)...anyways I bought a Roland JC22 about 4 years ago and its amazing...and not crazy big and loud like the pro band old one....tbf ive owned valve amps...Still do...but even small ones like my Vox AC4-12 are to loud....I love Paul Stamford Cooke.. he's a great player..ive learned a lot from him...he's a great player..wish I had his intelligence in my noodling...but a fender twin in a house...(unless it's in the middle of nowhere)...
Too loud for a pub...that said as an expensive ornament for a mancave..its up there withe the vox ac30 ..
Love this so much. Great information and stellar playing! Love the riffs from Tobias. Do you ever release videos of you just playing, like Hoffman does? I could listen to you telecasting (and everything else) for hours! All the best, Ross
Sleeper alert--- old Gibson Tweed amps -- like the 50 watters-- GA75, GA90,GA79, others with 2 6L6 tubes -- have a clean that is MAGICAL. No headroom really -- if the volume is above about 3-4 they start to distort. BUT in the "sweet spot" they are almost holographic. I think it's the old Jensens and Gibson "alliance" with Les Paul. They were really trying to build amps for Jazz. So while Fender always had this rockabilly/country thing I really hear Gibsons prior to the mid 60's going for a real hi fi tone.
The static from the Fender would be a deal breaker for me. The Cornell is all that you need.
Thanks for the lesson. I do prefer the warm tone of the cornell 😊
Btw, Tobias Hoffmann is one of the greatest things internet gave me over the last years! So glad to see you enjoy him as well. Cheers!
Truly sublime stuff Paul, thank you!
Thank you Paul, fantastic as always. You’ve brightened up a “rainy night in Glasgow “
that was nice, both amps sounding great. so much information to take in with those chords, i just sit back and try and absorb as much as i can. cheers pal
Oh wow, really beautiful playing! I was captivated. Thanks for sharing Paul
Both sound amazing. Super playing as always Paul
Wonderful video Paul. Your playing is immaculate, you have such a nice touch. Tomorrow I will wake inspired, and will move forward inch by inch.
...very lovely ...and not much room for error with it so clean!
Wow! The Jazzzmaster sounded great with the Fender! Beautiful playing as always!!
My god that sounds fantastic. Excellent playing as always but that offset is heavenly. I love how it's bright and warm at the same time. And you cannot beat Mastery hardware. I could put this on a loop.
Paul, you did it again for me, I love that “waterfall” run. Thanks for sharing that, I will have fun with it. You’re the best.
Thanks tedricchiuti
its beautiful
You can hear the influences but it's still you Paul. Lovely stuff.
The cornell's fabulous! Great playing as always
my mate had a fender twin years ago - turned up to 3 or 4 it was the best sounding amp I've ever played, but neighbours down the road would complain about the noise
Daddy Paul BACK AT IT AGAINNN with another beautiful guitar playing bideo
Paul,
I am currently playing on a Line 6 HX Stomp from the Helix series, which includes IRs from York Audio (Impulse Response) that excellently simulate the Fender Custom Twin. I am also using a Fender Ultra. I have managed to get close to your tone, but there is something more that years of experience have taught me - your passion for playing. You play the guitar in every phrase as if it were your last chord ever. I can only say congratulations. I am a fan from Brazil (apologies for my English).
Wow, thank you Daniel! What a lovely compliment. 🍻
All I hear is beautiful tones !!
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day Paul ❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊
Give Tobias one more n.
Beautiful playing.
Phenomenal!! It’s hard to go wrong with a twin but the Cornell stole the show!!
I like them both. They are complementary in a mix. Sonic wise no complains
That first loop sounds like something out of a studio Ghibli movie. Love it! I had a deluxe reverb and never played it (way too loud for my bedroom jamming) purchased a vibro champ about a month ago and it's perfect for me. Wasn't aware of the reliability issues until I saw your first vid with the twin. Fingers crossed it lasts.
Paul, this is Ivan Santiago here...
That Jazz Master of yours is sounding beyond amazing.
Congrats. Both amps are the way God intended. Marvelous ...
Hi Ivan! Delighted to see you stop by my wee CZcams channel again. Hope you’re doing well 🍻
@@paulstaffordcook8799 I watch all of your videos.
Yikes those twin cleans are stunning, also absolutely love the playing bits of which I will attempt to steal with the aid of YT playback speed reduced to 0.25 ☺️
Beautiful playing as always big yin. God I miss having a valve amp, my ac 15. The Katana doing the job for me for now though. Love the Fender cleans, stunningly Beautiful. Keep thinking about a blues jnr 🤔
Paul, thank you so much for a great and inspiring lesson. For my taste today I prefer the woodier, more medium sound of the Cornell. I had a '68 twin siver face in the 90s with which I recorded a record, but I found it difficult to record, not very personal and not very present in the mix. But i still remember it for the beatifull spatiality of the double spesker and the sound pressure that hugged you in the room up to your stomach. The mine also had a strong background hiss which I partially resolved with a modification: an additional knob for the micro adjustment of the bias. After many other experiences today I am in peace with a Princeton Handwired... ( on the jazzmaster is orgasmic ) perhaps a cross between the Cornell and the Twin. you are great! Marco
Thank you Marco, cheers for watching 👍
@2:00 chord just blow my mind! brilliant stuff
Your guitar playing is fantastic.
Thank you Gary 🍻
Interesting choice of settings on the Cornell for cleans - I’d have thought min power would have dropped the headroom too much, especially using the high input - but sounded great
The Cornell is to my ear, a bit nasally in comparison Paul. The Twin, despite the hiss, seems more articulate. But I am listening through 77 year old ears. I guarantee I would be shocked to go back in time and listen to my 64 Tele through my Ampeg Portoflex 1 x 15. 😳
Both sound great. The lovely musical composition in combination with the Jazzmaster and your playing style fits the Fender better, less mids. If were in the room with my tely, music and style I would probably favor the Cornell. Cheers mate!
Picking up from my comment on your last video - the sound you're getting from the Cornell is a revelation. Your playing is more relaxed with it too. At least, that's how it's coming across. Lower noise obviously, more mids, but I didn't hear it as being honky. 'Woody' was the adjective that came to my mind. The feel of 2 speakers is attractive though, so I feel even more justified in thinking that a blackface Princeton alongside it would be spectacular.
The Twin gave an almost harp like quality to your sound. Astounding.
They are differently voiced amps and technically it would be possible to run the Cornell through the twins speakers and hear the difference the 2x12 and larger cabinet makes.
Lovely playing, enjoy both amps .
That Casper G chord was my favorite.
Unfortunately the Fender reissues use cheaper IC filter caps which leads to a higher noise floor. See if you can have your amp person replace them with a set of F&Ts or the like. I ended up purchasing a hand wire kit from Mojotone and removing the pcb board and going with point to point wiring. Not really necessary but a fun project indeed. It does make it easier to repair.
I'm such a simp for a blackface or silverface Fender. That Twin of yours sounds the epitome of perfection to my ears, an object worthy of worship.
Wow, the JM with flats through the Cornell is divine! So much character there. EQ is at your disposal. If you want it to be closer to the Twin just dip the mids and raise the bass and treble a little. You sound like you no matter what you play. Beautiful.
Thanks Denmar. Especially the bit where you say I sound like me, regardless of amp 😊
@@paulstaffordcook8799 if there were ever a guitarist that had their own unique style and touch, I would say you’re high on that list. I really enjoy getting surprised whenever you play. It’s just natural for you to bring something unique to the music, and that’s great. Your ability to maneuver across the fret board without heaps of academic background is amazing. I know a good bit of theory, and cannot do what you do. We each have our own gifts, and you absolutely have signed your name to your style!
@@denmar355Thanks man, your words leave me smiling 🍻
It all sounds good to me. I don't really much judge amps from youtube recordings so can't give much of an opinion between the two. I've only played the old Twins and wasn't particularly fond of them but they weren't mine so I didn't do much tweaking with them. I always thought the Cornell sounded great in all your videos
Surely the twin is designed to throw the sound further than the cornel, that shouldn't matter so much when close micng both amps but if your getting a room sound from the mic in your phone then that might play into it as well, that thing is a beast.
That Cornel sounds so good! you get all that "woodyness" from the strings too, tone to die for!
Maybe is a matter of iphone positioning, but your iphone captures a better audio quality than mine, it seems! I don't know to get a better sound, could you please give me some tips? Stellar video as ALWAYS!
Hi Pedro. Yes, here’s a video showing exactly what I do in terms of positioning the iPhone etc. Actually, you’ll see in this vid that my iPhone is maybe a foot away from the amp’s grill cloth….. I have to say that, lately, I’ve been putting it even closer. czcams.com/video/L1Nen-dx0K4/video.htmlsi=PPBjv-UL5xPG-AGE
Hello Paul, the noisefloor will be gone, after the Amp has been serviced!
I just got lost in the playing Paul. Who cares what you play through.. just play mate!! Seriously, both amps sounded great and despite the compression the Twin sounded fabulous with that Jazzmaster and that Les Paul has some beautiful clarity and chime. Enjoy all that you have worked so hard for in good health. 😉
Thank you Brian! I imagine you are up north, in the peace and quiet of a lovely highland evening. I’ve often thought about a more rural existence in the highlands… maybe one day.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 I live in a forest...lot's of nice woods to camp in and a warm bed close by should the weather be inclement!! Keep doing what you are doing it's opening doors.
Back in the day, if you needed loud, you got a twin-I had the mid 70s 135 watt monster that could blow a wig off an old mans head. In an average sized club I couldn’t put the volume past 1
Hi Paul. I enjoy your playing immensely, and it has also inspired me to buy my own Cornell Romany 12. Stellar amp. So thank you for that.
I have a question - have you experimented with different valves in the Romany, or stuck with the stock valves? Just wondering, as I am contemplating doing some experimenting myself...
Be good to hear back. All the best.
Thank you Ian, and congrats on the purchase of your Cornell. Actually, no, I have only ever used the amp completely stock. I’m intrigued to hear how you get on 😊
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Thanks for your response. I went for 2x Genelex Gold Lions, and prefer the stock valves! Absolutely phenomenal amp.
May I ask - do you use the amp reverb, or a pedal?
@@IanEastonOfficialCheers for that info. As regards the amp’s on board reverb….. no, I always use the reverb from my Strymon Flint. I’m sure the purists will think it’s sacrilege to use a pedal when the amp has its own reverb tank…. But I find all amp reverb to be noisy. Hope that helps.
You never fail to entertain! I changed from a Princeton to Blackstar due to the issue of never being able to run it past ‘1’ without shattering the windows.
Your Cornell sounds much more like my 1970's Twin with orange JBL's, than your Twin Reverb.
I can't help but think you don't really like the Fender Twin too much Paul, I recall when I owned a couple that I always used the 'Vibrato' channel or the wet channel I never used the Bassman side, I found a Tube change and overhaul solved the noise factor, I loved those amps but my back sure didn't. Your playing is always a pleasure to listen to mate.
Hi with regard to some Fender amps being noisy..I had a 68Deluxe reverb reissue and that thing was noisy, after doing a little home work I replaced the preamp tubes with Tung sols..and the power tubes with JJs...result perfetly quiet..the Groove tubes are rubbish..
With that much hiss, they should call that amp the Fender Snake Charmer.
This is mildly amusing in context of guitar internet freaking out over some Fender FR-12 units having a slight hiss.
The Fender Twin Reverb is junk! Down with tube amps! /s
Regarding more important stuff, wonderful playing!
You ever get the same feeling from trying to resolve a chord progression that you do from repeating the same word over and over until it just sounds....weird? That dom7#9 to min/maj13 always leaves me with 15 options that all sound wrong somehow. LOL! I'm sure Bach has the secret to unravel that particular knot....
I don’t seem to have any issue with my Plexi at 10….my SG at 10….my Mudhoney at gain boost and my Sony Experia on tilt…..your playing too cool and sombre……get the neighbours down the street to hear it…..maybe I could hear it up the Braids…….😂😂😂😂😂😂.seriously tho…..the playing is sublime as always…….either or……but I can’t have no bucks in my life……but always watch…..great stuff
I can totally see where your coming from - Would be interesting to try the Cornell through a 212 to see if you then preferred that having had time to get used to the twin
Interesting point Paul 🤔. Yeah, maybe the magic is in the 2 speakers…..
Have a listen to the sound Tobias Hoffman and Simon Jarret get from their instruments. They must have a knob or switch on their amps that says “ Balls”. That’s the sound they get. There is nothing Brittle or Tinny or thin about their sound.
Lots of headroom and getting the best out of the guitar pickups. I have heard Simon Jarret play live in Western Canada several times and the sound you hear him get in his demo reels Is the same sound he gets playing live.
Why not try an apogee hype mic just plug it into your iPhone and hit record and has better audio recording than the phones mic
Personally, the Cornell sounds more PSC.
The CRISTAL CLEAR of the Twin can´t be Reach by the Cornell
The 68 Twin "reissue" is just a junky poorly made amp. The 65 reissue is still poorly made but doesn't have the issues of the 68. If you like the headroom and sound of a Twin then either get a 65 Reissue or better still find an actual 1970s Twin and spend a little on basic maintenance and you will have another keeper for life amp.
If you are interested in a 1970s Twin keep on mind that the Ultra linear ones (1977+) are somewhat different beasts that you might like or not. They are 135 watts and even cleaner and more scooped.
I would suggest ditching the 68 Reissue and instead finding a 1970-1976 and having a good tech look it over for you and fix what is necessary as it looks like you are on the verge of falling into the rabbit hole of trying to make the 68 Reissue good when it's just not a good amp. You just don't need the hassle of the 68, move it along, get a real Twin and get to playing. As always love your music!!! Where's the album ???
