He must have been busy because he seems to have written an awul lot of stuff but doesnt seem to have any albums out. This one was definitely made for a Strat. I have a double record by Richard Thompson that I love...half studio and half live. I can hear bagpipes in those fiddle tunes when you use the drone on the bottom. John Renbourne and Bert Jansch were really good at those as well as Knopfler...I want to go see Tim Lerch play as he's just up north of me...great player and love how he uses a tele to play jazz. Damping techniques are very hard to teach..it's a feel thing like playing a bar chord with your thumb over the neck...you just find the right tension and it becomes second nature.

      @paulstaffordcook8799  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Hi Tony. Yes, just listened to Wuthering Heights to remind myself. What jumps out to me is that it’s not dissimilar to Clapton’s “woman tone”. Think “I Feel Free”. It’s fat, and it’s completely lacking any attack….. So if it was me…..: Crunch channel, Gain knob full up, amp EQs generally all at 12 o’clock, booster mod off. Select neck pickup on your Strat and then…. the secret sauce…. back your Strat’s tone knob to zero (or maybe 1 or 2). Voila…. Woman Tone! If it’s all too overdriven I’d try the amp’s Clean channel with some booster mod. But it’s the guitar’s tone pot that holds the secret. Hope that helps.

    I went to get the lyrics and wound up opening a kettle of fish like nobody's business... I finally found this: The Braes Of Balquhither By Robert Tannahill
    Let us go, lassie, go
    To the braes o' Balquhither,
    Where the blae-berries grow
    'Mang the bonnie Highland heather;
    Where flie deer and the rae
    Lightly bounding together,
    Sport the lang summer day
    On the braes o' Balquhither.
    I will twine thee a bower,
    By the clear siller fountain,
    And I'll cover it o'er
    Wi' the flowers o' the mountain;
    I will range through the wilds,
    And the deep glens sae dreary,
    And return wi' their spoils.
    To the bower o' my deary.
    When the rude wintry win'
    Idly raves round our dwelling,
    And the roar of the linn
    On the night breeze is swelling,
    So merrily we'll sing,
    As the storm rattles o'er us,
    'Till the dear sheeling ring
    Wi' the light lilting chorus.
    Now the summer is in prime,
    Wi' the flowers richly blooming,
    And the wild mountain thyme
    A' the moorlands perfuming;
    To our dear native scenes
    Let us journey together,
    Where glad innocence reigns
    'Mang the braes o' Balquhither.

    Hi Paul,
    What did you do with the Flint to get the more fender tones? Did you also adjust your bass/ middle/ treble on the Marshall to move towards the Cornell tones?
    Wonderful lesson - thank you so much

    • @paulstaffordcook8799
      @paulstaffordcook8799  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Great question ZofoZofo! If I recall, I firstly balanced the Marshall’s Gain and Volume to be very clean, with no breakup. Then I dialed back the Middle on the amp for a more scooped sound. Then I increased the Presence to add some chime. And then finally I increased the Decay on the Flint to add extra atmosphere. All those efforts seem to push the Marshall more towards a Fender Blackface type sound.
