You have def got out of the rut you were in months ago… I remember suggesting some atonal or even mathematical scales to break out of the musical darkness. This sounded great : interesting , musical , quirky and surprising. I saw an interview with Sting and he loves adding a surprise chord or melody within his work and suggests it’s a key fundamental in audience enjoyment .

You've amassed a large theory vocabulary for someone that doesn't find it important in focus. Not a criticism. I come to the instrument from the other side. I'm a maths head. Eventually i have to understand the theory of what I'm doing so my head can rest. Your point is the most important part though. Your ear knows what it likes. Don't accept dictation from other sources. I love the values of letting your ear experience and dictate. Your ear is the ultimate teacher and critic. I always recommend learning Peter Frampton's solo in Natural Born Woman/Boogie. There's a lot of techniques in it, in a short space of time. It has big span too! That's what you remember.
The 'Arabian' sound is in the harmonic minor scale, in the H,W+H,H section, but you can stack those sequences vs playing the entire harmonic minor scale. A lot or eastern scales are in 2 parts, an upper and lower part. The diatonic modes are the technically the same, in that you can split and rejoin the upper and lower halves, on the fly to change a mode mid way. Unless you play the 6 notes, upper and lower notes of the octave and the 4 notes of the HWH sequence, the mode hasn't been defined. If the mode has a halftone start or end it's just 5 notes.

    Nice mash-up intro Paul.👌
For someone who doesn't have a lot of use for music theory, you sure use it a lot!😂
    Couldn't help myself.🤪😂🤣
I agree, for Dan or anyone developing their basic skills of clean, clear, and smooth playing, theory is quite irrelevant.
The most important things to know in the beginning and intermediate learning stages of guitar or any musical development are the basic understandings of how the music moves and exactly how does the musician develop methods and means of making that happen.
The obvious basics are learning the notes and chords along the entire fretboard on the guitar. This in itself tends to overwhelm many players because if you just look up the chords in a book, they only list the primary position.
I suggest that people start by learning all of the notes on the low E string starting at the nut because you learn several key bits of information right away.
#1 The open note is the low E note, #2 The very first fret is the F note, also a key to the note and chord flow of order such as fret, fret, skip a fret, also one of the reasons the fret markers are on frets 3, 5, 7, 9, 12. #3 Is F# and the recognition of the half step or semi tone, as well as Major and minor. #5 Is G and the whole step or full tone, skip a fret, and the basic structure of how the fret board works with notes and chords.
Of course there is so much more to it all, but learning to identify some of these fundamental keys will actually begin to help open up so many more avenues and possibilities for making music.🍻🤙

Interestingly enough Mike, I deliberately did not post any videos here on CZcams after the Alphabet Company, more famously known as Google shut down the Google Plus platform. At the time my channel had 1.67 million followers and they just shut it all down. I have had no intention of ever producing any other content for this company and yet you have just literally caused me to reconsider.

The reason I ask is, once you reach the place where you can make music, the journey is discovering your own techniques, sounds, rhythms, and styles.
The journey is life long and full of ruts, bad habits, and pit falls, but that's where we learn to steal the ideas of others like Paul, Tom Bukovac. Robin Ford, Billy Gibbons, Johnny Cash, Slash, Eric Clapton, or whoever your favorite players are and add their tools to your skills and abilities.
I am considering the types of things mentioned by Paul and the fundamentals that provide a solid foundation for anyone to be confident enough to use their skills to begin to copy and lick out the licks and tricks of others.
There are a million channels out there that tell you how to play like so and so or such and such. In fact many of the star players actually teach you how they play.
If I were to post content, it would literally start from the beginning and show all of the things I've discussed here and expand a step at a time. I definitely wouldn't teach how to play certain things, but rather how to be a musician and find your own way.

I think you have a point with music notation. It's supposed to tell you what someone was doing when they played a peice of music, but not to tell you how to play the music - that should always be down to the musician who is playing it. Obviously that could be a bit different if it's an orchestra and they're actually supposed to be playing exactly the same thing but it's not something solo guitar players need to worry about 🙂
