That beginner has taste, feel and touch like no other beginner I ever listened to...
Paul, your "beginner" pentatonic runs killed half of the CZcams gear reviewers on the spot😅 great video as always!
Well thank you man, appreciated 🍻
Holy moly!you probably have a trout stream out your back door
Hey Paul, I really dig your "beginner" version, it is so NOT beginner, because you put some beautiful phrasing in which only comes with years of practising. Then again it reminds me of the beauty of well executed simplicity ;-)
Well thank you Michael, I’m delighted you liked my playing 👍
A man who loves guitars and cats cant't be wrong!
nah.. cats suck.. dogs however howl along ;0)
Gorgeous take on the blues. Reminds me of Roy Buchanan. And killer tone!
Would LOVE to see more of these exact videos!!
Inspirational stuff Paul . And feel free to show off anytime !
Masterpiece from 7:50, I was stunned!!!
Thanks man, I appreciate that 🍻
Brilliant Paul.....Thanks of this ....heaps of good stuff to help move closer to the next level. Lovely tone on the Les Paul.
Terrific stuff Paul
Brillant teaching vid Paul 🌟🎸
Oh man. Great stuff. The evolution of a fine player.
Great as always Paul, I'm definitely going to steal a few licks from you! Thank you! 🎸👍
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day Paul ❤😊
Thank you Paul pure magic as always. Just what I needed to liven up my Sunday afternoon. Best wishes from Glasgow
Thanks Frank 👍
Thanks Paul, this vídeo helps me a lot to practise my guitar skills ❤🎉🕺
Keep on playin'
Cheers
Great teacher thank you im learning because you slow down and break it down thanx again good man
Cheers Tom 👍
Awesome lesson Paul, great tips & really enjoyed it . Thanks for sharing 😃
Great idea with this video.Ive been following you now for several years (tipped of by one of
"Uncle Larry's" videos) and I want to say hat's off to your presence, skill and style. This particular episode got me to reassessing my skill level and you offered so many great tips to move me along. Thanks and keep it up. Great work!!
Thanks man, I appreciate you watching 👍
Thanks for the great tips Paul. As usual great playing.
Thanks Jeff
This is a great little video Paul, it’s interesting for me as i’m always knocking my playing but I can see the progress i’ve made, and you are an inspiration to that progress!
Thank you man, I appreciate that 🍻
I love this video, reminds me of those you did 2 or 3 years ago on progressing through the levels (in minor and major I think). Really helpful and fun to watch.
I can't be alone in wanting an album of your work, especially in the last year or 18 months when you have gone to a whole new level of musical entertainment. Like a crowdfunded Edinburgh Plexi Soul.
Great stuff. Many thanks,
Thanks man, I appreciate your words. 🍻
superb as usual Paul ! Thanks
Thank you Boris 👍
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Big fan of Les Paul as you are , myself !! What a sound !!👍
What an excellent bit of instruction. Really helps one understand how to ascend to the next level.
Thanks man, glad you enjoyed it 👍
Great lesson, and interesting gauging where my playing is. Thanks, Paul
mentions of Rory Gallagher and Roy Buchannan. Under appreciated guitarists. You give me hope that I might get the blocks of wood under high tension wires to sing. Keep this series going. Really appreciate the way you show the techniques.
Thank you, delighted you liked it 👍
Your basic is bloody good Paul - don't think you can unlearn your timing and taste. There's bits in all of them I can learn from. Great channel. Well done on keeping it so interesting.
This is fanTASTic! As usual, the feel and choices and tone are just super tasteful - even on the first ‘advanced’ one where you were supposed to be showing off, it wasn’t OTT, just fun.
Thanks man, appreciated
This lesson is really great ! I found another lesson on your channel that goes into a few levels of playing the blues : awesome . I am a guitar teacher myself so i really recognize the various levels .
Delighted you liked it, thanks man 👍
Why can't I give this more than one like? 😎
Well thank you Vito, it’s the thought that counts 😊. Cheers 🍻
Very interesting! Thanks, man!
Verse 3 really gives me something to aim at. I’m going to transcribe that and see why it works and then see if I can’t apply the lesson to some licks of my own. Until then, I’ll have to be content with dreaming about 4 onwards. I believe we all want more of these sorts of lessons. And perhaps in different genres that I’ve seen you playing in before? Have a coffee, or something more warming, on me. Thanks dude
Absolutely loving the show off's playing. If I could play anything like that I'd be a real baw heid. Fantastic.
“Baw heid” , I love it 🤣. That’s classic Scots lingo right there!
Good to see you again in 2024 😊 happy new year ❤
Happy new year!!
🎶🎼🎶🎸🎸🎸 Paul your phrasing and feeling for blues is exceptional 👏👌 it even shows in your body language and facial expressions 🎵🎼🎶🎸👏
Thanks man, I appreciate that 🍻
@@paulstaffordcook8799 yer welcome sir 🎶🎼🎵🎸
You are such a good player Paul ;)
Thank you Paul 😊
The 'beginner' verse reminds me of JJ Cale - I'd be happy to stay there..
Is there a level below beginner?
We all know there is 😂
Drummer?!
@@michaeldavies6577 Some of my best friends are drummers
Same thought crossed my mind. Cos I’m there…
I thought the same thing… Dang, this beginner dude is better than me! (No laugh emoji. I’m 100% serious.)
The “show off” bit had my feet tapping. More good stuff…and yes…I pinched a bit more! 👍🍷
Extremely useful, Paul. I'm in the intermediate camp for sure, but manage some additional 'magic' occasionally, albeit not always intentionally. But I always figure out why something worked and add it to the bag of tricks. Chord tone target notes have been something I've been working on lately. It's a progression, and hard work to keep it moving forward sometimes, but hey, what else is a guy going to do of an evening?
Thanks Peter 🍻
Verse 1. Peter Greene lives on . I wish I could come up with that stuff
Ok , so I’ve decided I wanna live in a neighborhood where Thor Oliverson lives next door on one side, and Paul Stafford Cook on the other... man the stuff I could learn... 😎👍🏻
That would be awesome DW. We'd be jammin' 🤩
Yeah, that sounds like a recipe for long nights of fun 🤘🍻.
Awesome vid Paul, definitely things to take away from this!
Thanks Paul, cheers mate
I’m committing some grand theft.
this is why you have 23,000 subscribers and I only have 145 lol! loved your advanced player example but all of it sounded good to me!
Thanks Jeremy 🍻
@@paulstaffordcook8799 youre welcome. actually i now have 170 subs! lol
We're always on level one, you know that. Otherwise tomorrow hold limited prospects.
good one mate, some absolute gems in there. Good couple of months worth of stuff to practice. Glad you managed to get away, does Rach appreciate them as much as you ? 😀😀It looked feckin cauld though, were you under canvas or a b&b ? Intonation on that '52 sounding great, or maybe it's just you 😁😁thanks for posting
Paul - ...um, I don't call verses 3-5 showing off. I call it a study in how to turn a blues progression (which can be so tedious, tiresome, and boring) into something that makes me want it to not stop. The flavors, the nuances, the rhythmic liveliness, the little bursts of melodic content (as distinct from just stringing together a bunch of muscle memory licks)...jeez, I'm reduced to blathering, onna counta this stuff is just what I need. Thanks for opening another path forward! 😎
Thank you Vito, your comment has me smiling. Cheers man 🍻
I love your playing Paul. But I also like the pictures of your little getaway trips. You mentioned that you are planning on going camping again next time, but isn’t it freezing cold in Scotland nowadays?
I’m laughing here because I was just about to plan the trip and I’ve just looked at the forecast…. 🤣, yeah, maybe I’ll just stay in a hotel.
“What level are you?”asks Uncle Pauly, “nowhere near yours” pops into my head….
🤣, cheers David
Advanced from beginner included hybrid picking style from using a pick only style.
Good point Tony. Yeah, I should probably have mentioned the right hand….. Cheers
Shit! After 45 years of playing- I’m still a beginner 😳
Now come on MrBossei, anyone who watched your recent video on the Fender Pro Junior IV will know you are a rather tasty player 🤘
@@paulstaffordcook8799 ❤Compared to you Paul we all feel like beginners 😄❤🙏
Paul do you mean, what can you come up with on the spot, jam type situation or given a bit of time to work something out ?
Jam, I'd be level 1 or 2.
Good question nmac. I’m basing this on having some time to work things out. I’d be lying if I said I just came up with verses 4,5 and 6 on the spot.
7:48 where does those licks come from, any player in particular? ❤
Thanks sega62s, delighted you liked those licks. Those particular licks are just the result of years of watching country players like Jerry Read, Jerry Donahue and then mixing it all in with blues/jazz players like Robben Ford.
🍻✌️🎼
Olympic level muppetry level me.
Link to the backing track ?
Link in the description. Happy Jamming 🥲🤘
Im still a beginner.😔😔😭
It’s ok, we all are 😂
Welllllll... let's just start at level 0. 😅
Is this the katana?
No, this is my wee valve combo. It’s a Cornell Romany 12.
Instead of a funk groove, perhaps a slow 3/4 twelve bar would’ve been a better choice to make us REAL beginners not feel so inadequate in comparison to Paul Cook’s perspective of how a Beginner is supposed to sound. (I’m depressed now.)
That’s a fair point Kurt. I’ll bear that in mind for the next one 👍
Super format.. however it seems that your idea of a beginners clarity and timing is a tad removed from reality😆
You couldn’t play like a beginner because the rhythm was too tight…but fun none the less…last bit was great. Thx.
Nice try but your beginner sounds a bit like Carlton. It’s hard to go backwards with great tone!
I’m laughing out loud when I read your comment. It’s a lovely compliment and it’s also made me chuckle 🤣. Cheers 🍻
I'm shit...can't even sound like the first example.
It wasn't much beyond personally interpretive your end from my end, overthought for sure, I recorded a jam with it too months back, I think mine was/is truer to the overall vibe of it, your's was all over the shop using 3/4 genres instead. tidy elevator music and cliched to the hilt unfortunately....be yourself instead and forget Boner and the King, both are ham sandwiches in all honesty.
Not sure what you’ve been smoking mate, but I guess you’re entitled to your opinion I suppose.
