Tricks of the trade in the Key of D

  • The key of D is LOADED with open strings!
    Hopefully you’ll get something out of this 20 minute exploration into this fantastic key. I’ve deliberately not dropped the low E down to D…. that might be cheating 🤣….. so I’ve kept things very standard. That said, I totally recommend doing the drop D thing as it opens up even more tonal possibilities!
    Happy jammin’ folks 🤘

    Thanks again Paul for your lessons and especially for these recent open strings tricks in those keys having great open string opportunities. In the short time I have come across your lessons I have learned a great deal and the fret board is becoming evermore open to my better understanding and creativity. I see my playing becoming more nuanced and imaginative with understood purpose. It seemed that I was always noodling about and would eventually find a useful discovery. MUCH better than phone or PC . Was that the Romany ? Are you just using an iPhone ? or is there some kind of mic used ? It just sounds SO GOOD.
    I love the dissonance which you call half step rub. Also you mentioned James Taylor. I think he reverses normal fingering of D so that his index finger is on the top E string. When he hammers off it's very clean as there's no chance of a finger muffing the open E note.

One of my heroes. Thanks for another great session! I love the way you just plug in and play through your amp, I prefer that too 👍
    Edit: A gear question, if you don’t mind. I have a ‘52 Tele reissue. I have had it for a while but the finger board is still quite sticky. I can clean the back of the neck stickiness when I need to but after playing a while, the fingerboard starts to get slow and sticky too.

    • @paulstaffordcook8799
      @paulstaffordcook8799  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks D Geetar. Your gear question…., hmm… I certainly had a similar problem with the back of the neck of my cream coloured custom shop Strat. Couldn’t stand it, so out came the sandpaper and that fixed it. Must have been the lacquer. But I’ve never had a problem with the finger board. I presume you’re talking about a maple board? My Tele has (and my new Oswald) a maple board but it’s heavily relic’d and worn so doesn’t suffer that problem. Personally….? I’d WOULD get the wire wool out.

    Watching you noodle in the key of D reminded me of meeting Ben Powell in Bath

    He's a stunning player and a really nice guy. Very humble about his talents.

    Amazing how fixated people are with guitarist's left hands. All the while, as he is pushing the neck toward the camera to emphasize the fretting hand, the notes are ringing out because of what the other hand is doing. Paul is probably driven to do it this way by people's comments or maybe some generally accepted belief that this is "what they want to watch." Want to learn to play like this guy? Look at his right hand! Want to learn to play like Mark Knopfler, EVH, Tommy Emmanuel? Watch him hybrid pick. Paul could fill a room without even moving his left hand. For heaven sakes people, pay attention to what he's trying to show you. Paul, you are contributing mightily to the body of important instruction on CZcams. I just wish people would show the same interest in your other appendage! Without it, the left hand can be no more than an unfulfilled promise. It's not simply just the right hand folks, it's the doorway to everything!

      Thanks Grady! And yes, you make extremely valid points. All that damping, pick & fingers, picking along different parts of the string length, etc etc. You’re right, it all adds up. 👍
