We are all our own worst critics. Everyone notices the things they cant do but then notice what others can do. I can tell you either dont hear what we hear when you play or you are just way too modest but you are up there on my Mount Rushmore of guitar players Paul. Theres alot of big names that come after yours for me man. When I open up youtube im hoping to see a new Paul Cook video every time. Ill be watching for as long as youre making them i guarantee that. Just trying to say thanks for everything you do I guess.
Wow, thank you so much William! Genuinely, your comment will keep me smiling well into the evening 😊. I even showed it to my wife to remind her she married talent. She just smiled and asked “Have you put the bins out yet?” 🤣
Glorious. Im on it!! And i signed up for youtube pro so i can now slow videos down for study!!😎🤺👍
You are our own Uncle Larry on this side of the pond 😀I was at that gig by the way - it was a great night....
All hail Uncle Larry, he really is a unique person and player, my kind of music, Paul is indeed a high caliber journeyman, good analogy!
Thank you John! I appreciate those words. A Scottish Uncle Larry, yeah I like that! 🤣😊
You can turn a phrase as well as you can play a lick, sir. Referring a flat 5 resolve as " putting you out of your misery". Love it
Thanks Alan 🤣. Cheers
Paul, Edinburgh is a 20minute train ride for me. I need to buy you a beer or three for all of these free lessons you’ve given us over the years!
Well thank you Grant! I’m delighted you like my wee videos 😊. (And sorry for my very late reply).
Uh...wow--that was like angels singing! 😍Well, except when the sailor-speak snuck out! 🤪 Thanks for the playing tips...speaking of tips, I'm headed over to your tip jar right now! 🤑
Hi Gordon. Yes, I did kinda let rip with the swearing this week didn’t I 🤣. Anyway, I’m chuffed you compared it to angels singing, I can’t think of a nicer compliment. I’ve also dropped you a wee email, to say thank you for buying my morning coffee today. It’s appreciated mate 😊
Hello Faither, still loving that LP, you never fail to put a smile on this auld fizzog. Now Paul I want to try something different for the gag this week, so here goes for the Knoxy shorts. 1. A very merry guy is walking home from the pub and spots a Chinese takeaway he not seen before, goes in a says "oi wee man, what's the name of this shop ?", the fella behind the counter says "WOK WOK ", drunk guy says "WHO'S THERE". 2. Fella walking along Princes Street and sees a young guy coming towards him singing "ALL WE HEAR IS RADIO GAGA, RADIO GOO GOO, RADIO BLAH BLAH ".First guy says "hey man, you must be a Queen fan ?", young guy says NO and sticks the head on him and walks away singing "ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST ". 3. Young lady goes to the doctor with a sore bum, doctor questions her about what she's been up to, she says "well, my husband and I wanted to spice up things in the bedroom so we introduced food", doctor says "ok, I better examine you , wait a minute I can see something like a lettuce sticking out", she says "yes, and that's just the tip of the iceberg ". Take care buddy.
Willem, thanks so much for the emoji, glad you liked the gags although not among my best, I've been doing this for a while on Paul's channel and he likes them too, you see I'm not much of a guitarist but always check out his channel for tips as he is a fine player. If you go back a bit there's plenty of better jokes. Thanks buddy and take care.
John, you made my day with those. Thanks for sharing 😁
@@foolhardymcpain thanks for the lovely comment Greg, take care buddy.
"The tip of the iceberg" 😆🤣😂😆🤣😂
Love it John! I’m catching up with my CZcams comments in bed - and so my wife and have just had our entertainment for the night 🤣😊. Cheers John.
Thanks uncle Paul
Much gratitude for tone, touch , and sweet story telling with your heart and fingers .
Well thank you Kevin! Delighted you liked it 🍻
I saw this and was like “damn, he hasn’t made that video yet on how he plans his chord progressions” and then you say “yeah, just stole it from a film” 😂 Your videos are like Bob Ross paint-alongs: Relaxing, informal and everything is so simple, so easy but we’re watching along thinking “yeah… yeah… wait what… but why… oh, ok… shit where did that come from?!”
I’m glad it’s easy for you!
Hi Saladzingers! (And sorry for my very late reply). I like your reference to Bob Ross paint-alongs 🤣. I can totally relate to that.
Very lovely Paul
Thanks Mum. x
Absolutely beautiful playing. Thanks for sharing
Thank you Stanparchaiski 👍
Thanks for making the videos Paul. It helps take my mind off the worry of life here in the Uk with the cost of living crisis, incompetent government etc. Also your playing is excellent and I've been stealing your riffs and playing them at work - :)
Thank you salvadormarley, I’m delighted to read your nice comment. And yes, we as a country, do seem to be in a heck of a state…. So I’m pleased to help take your mind off it 🤣👍

"I'd like to play for you now my new recording called... Cherry Soufflé." 😄
Love it 🤣. Yeah, that could be the title of my next vid!
That is one beautiful Les Paul!
Thank you David. I’m a very lucky boy to have it 🙏
Loved it 👍. I noodle like that a lot on my Les Paul despite an annoying buzz through my Fender Pro amp. It annoys the wife but keeps me happy for hours…..
Well, annoying buzz aside, I wish you many more happy hours noodling 😊
Wonderful! A whole treasure of great licks and phrases. Superb tone. I would never have thought that this is with the Astoria…
Thank you Ulrich! Yes, I simply set the Astoria a little cleaner than I would normally. Delighted you liked it. 😊
Thanks Uncle Pauly - you are an inspiration.
Luvly touch feel etc... sweeeeeet.
Thank you, I’m delighted you liked my playing. Cheers
Awesome, the feel you have, wow!
Thanks man, appreciated 🍻
Beautiful
Thank you Willem 😊
Fantabulous dissonances mixed with the sweetness of love just the way life is...
I like your summary! Cheers TaffaFilms 👍
Fantastic! And thanks for the link!
Cheers William
Thanks for the heads up on Tobias Hoffman, what a great player! Just some of his loops are amazing
He’s great eh! And he’s got me seriously gassing for a Fender Jazzmaster 🙏
Another pearl of a lesson paul thanks
Thank you Chris, delighted you liked it! (And sorry for my very late reply).
Thanks for the post Paul! Hope you have a great weekend! 👍
Excellent as always. 👍🏻
Thank you Max 👍
Imagine Gary Moore playing his own stuff instead of the tribute.
It's always good to dabble in areas we may not be particularly interested for the mere possibility of inspiration. 😉🍻🤙
Thank you!
My pleasure John. 👍
Superb tone always .👍👍⚘⚘💖💖🔥🔥
Thanks vintage tone 👍
Every day your playing is better and better. Really cool guitar sound. Thans for share it.
Great again ;-)
Thanks Jagercaster 👍
Your videos will always be the best. Thank you Paul for another great video. Great playing great chat and great humour best wishes and good health to you and your family from Glasgow 🎼👍🎸❤️
Thank you Frank! Cheers mate
Beautiful playing, Paul... as always.
Thank you Sergio 👍. (And sorry for my very late reply).
Daddy Pauly, thank you for another amazing video
Thank you TwoYs! Delighted you liked it. (And sorry for such a late reply).
These key of videos are killer!
Thank you Ryan 👍
oh wow Paul, what a gorgeous intro, absolutely beautiful. Inspirirational mate
Thank you David! (And sorry for such a late reply). 👍
I really think theres a long and successful career ahead of you in the film scoring industry. If things all fell where they belonged and all that. Your jams are just so provoking and forfil the job of a good score perfectly. I try and listen to ALOT of guitar players and its so rare to hear someone able to do what you can do
Thank you man (and sorry for late reply). I appreciate that. Film scores…. you’ve got me thinking now 🤔😊. Cheers to you
Love the Julian lick
Thank you electricj5, I’m quite chuffed with that 🤣👍
17:58 Marc Ribot does that trick a lot! For example in Tom Waits Raing Dogs
It´s what Eric Haugen calls skronk or assertive dissonance
Tasty stuff Paul love the vids when you stay in 1 key really helpfull. if you didnt hear it old uncle Larry gave you a mention and said you play with a lot of heart and soul .double nice one.
Thank you Rosewoodsam! Delighted you liked my vid. Yes, I was over the moon to get the mention 😊
Magic Paul. Please excuse my pillaging. Thanks also for the Knopfler move around 9.30. Lovely.
That intro jam - another one for the PSC originals album!!!
Thank you Grant! Appreciated. (And sorry for my very late reply).
I know the Gary Moore/Scott Gorham Video. Its so good. As well like Julian Lage, Tobias Hoffmann, Uncle Larry and so on... by the way: You are indeed a real musician sir! Great video and great guitar ✌🏻
Thank you String Theory! I’m delighted to read such a fine compliment 🍻
Sir, you are one melodic side of a guitar god, 🥰
Thank you so much Imli 😊. Cheers to you.
I love you are adapting the uncle title; Yes! 🙌
I bet Tom Bukovac will be getting his lawyers on me 🤣
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Uncle Larry is a cool cat (much like uncle Paul) and does not have time for corporate law, there are too many genesis chords to find and exploring in the sonic scape!
Back binge watching since I moved. hahah
Jeesh, Paul. That intro jam…. Chills. It was gorgeous.
Familiar name you've got there, and a guitar player too. Small world!😀
Thank you! (And sorry for my very late reply).
Liked your weirdy bits! Ala fripp/belew ! Too name just a few. Never knew you could stretch a fast shooter with those deluxe fingers! Nice one paul. 😎🤘
Thank you Gordon 👍. (And sorry for my very late reply).
Hi Paul ! Greetings from Akron , Ohio USA ! Nice to see and hear your new video . Very great as always ! All of your guitars sound so good , that tells everybody that tone is in the fingers ! You have a very warm and emotional style . Solo guitar is like flying without a parachute . If you are good , then it sounds good . Any flubs and there is no else to blame . I am with you on Gary Moore . I was so sad when he passed , because I felt he was the best guitar player of his generation . His style lent itself well to solo playing , and he was on a different level than anyone else . Very emotional , clear , and every note said something ! Of course I was a little disappointed if I picked up one of my guitars after listening to him ! We all have a different style , but , I surely enjoyed his guitar playing ! Keep up the videos and see you on the next world tour !
Gary Moore, you need say no more such a magnificent player, when he used those 2 fingers for the fast runs my jaw drops every time, he had something unique and rare, I see that you also appreciate this.
Hi Kenny. Nice to see your name again on my channel. Your words about my playing are appreciated Kenny! Thank you my friend and I hope you and yours are doing well in Akron 😊👍
Also I remember seeing Gary Moore at the Sheffield city hall. Two middle aged guys in front of us walking in, first turns to the other and says “so what you hoping for then?”
The other guy goes “hmm… I’d have to say… Parisienne Walkways” 🙄😂
Uncle Pauly does not need the pick. He could make like Mark Knopfler,, Lindsey Buckingham or Jeff Beck and stick with the golden fingertips!
Mark Knopfler once said that the perfect guitar playing sits somewhere inbetween blues and country influences. Not arguing against a certified player like MK, but you adding that little touch of jazzy and classical lines into the mix gets real close to perfection in my ears 👌👏🙌
Well thank you Johan, that means a lot! Cheers man 🍻
Mad chords
You have such a distinctive style. No matter what genre you decide to explore. The sign of a true artist. Your phrasing is so intelligent and thoughtful. As always, I'm inspired AND jealous (!!!). Your Les Paul is beautiful. Is that Murphy lab aging or real-life wear and tear? BTW, I laughed out loud when you said, "I think a musician would call that a flat 5." Doesn't take much :)
Thank you XLBiker13. Always a joy to read a nice comment like that 👍. As regards the LP aging…. No, it’s not been done by Gibson. It’s actually 3 things…. (1) I intentionally left it in sunlight over the years, which has had an incredible effect on fading it. (2) did use the hairdryer / compressed air trick to speed up lacquer checking. (3) a finally, some real life wear and tear, as it’s my most played guitar.
I know it's the player NOT the guitar..... But that Les Paul sounds mighty fine, Paulie!
Thank you Mark! And sorry for such a late reply 😊
Did you miss the auction of G. M's stage gear. A few pedals at not a lot of money for his fans to aquire and cherish his gear with Coa. Hope you were lucky Cove? . Enjoyed the video. 👍🥃Respect to you mate.
Thanks Dunderhead. Yes, I heard about the auction, but sadly never managed to acquire anything.
loads of interesting stuff there, jeezs the hours you must put in mate. waiting to see the backlash from your female fans, and your Mrs about female drivers :) great stuff , love the Garry moore vid, seen him with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker and was lucky enough to see him at his last gig at the Picture House in Lothian Rd What a talent
Ah man, he was just fab. I saw him once too. As regards my female drivers….. if any of you are reading this comment, you’re all wonderful. Honest 😉
Fantastic playing Paul! I wish I had your talent. I'd love to make a set of pickups for you one day.
Well thank you Ben, I appreciate that. I’ve had a look at your website and I’m getting all hot under the collar with the possibilities 🤣. So I’ll certainly keep you in mind should I find myself in such a situation. Thank you Ben
@@paulstaffordcook8799 the website needs major upgrades, I barely know what I'm doing with computer technology I prefer to stick to pickups. Its not often I get to make pickups for a player as discerning as yourself, it would be an honour.
Well thank you Ben! I’ll definitely keep you in the front of my mind, because I quite fancy upgrading the pickups (mini humbuckers) in my Epiphone Riviera. Just need to get saving first 😊. Anyway, cheers Ben
@@paulstaffordcook8799 mini humbuckers are my favourite pickups, I can make you a really nice set. They are somewhat microphonic due to their design which can be a nightmare when playing loud but the overtones are delicious! A player of your ability could really squeeze some magic out of them.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 czcams.com/video/o2Tf3IhoJqE/video.html
I don't want to swear... But... Fuck me, you just keep getting better.
Love it, thanks FarCanal 🤣👍. (And sorry for my very late reply).
Paul your videos are precious, thank you for sharing all that valuable knowledge!
Your touch is terrific, just curious about what string gauge do you use? Is it the same for Fender / Gibson style guitars?
Thank you!
Thank you Manuel, I appreciate that. As regards string gauge, my default is 11s for Gibson scale length and 10s for Fenders. I occasionally dabble with Flatwounds (12s) and lower tunings too. Hope that helps.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 thank you! Great info 😃
Hi. Just found you a week ago…så great playing man love it…really great tast in notes.
What is the cord progression ?
Thanks Christian
Thanks Christian! Delighted you like my wee videos. As to the chord progression - it’s basically just weaving through all the usual chords that apply to E, but including some diminished and augmented chords. I’m not a theory guy, but you see break it all down a little further into the vid 👍
Great as always! What tremolo are you using in the intro?
Thanks man. It’s my Strymon Flint. I’m using it for both Reverb and Tremolo. I absolutely love that pedal 😊
Paul, have you considered joining RF's Dojo? One benefit is that once/month we get together with THE MAN for a zoom chat. just sayin' . . .
This sounds amazing, Robben Ford in person eh?
Yes! Live! Tomorrow we will be on zoom at noon California time.
Wow, that never actually occurred to me. Cheers for the info David, I will look into that.
No sound for me at first. It's good now 👍
Very nice Paul you're really coming into your own. I'm so glad you're not playing one of those terrible Relic guitars. I don't think I could have watched this if you did.
Thanks Slim pickens 😊. Yes, it feels like I’m kind of on a journey with my playing. That sounds really cliche and corny 🤣. But I like where it’s going. Cheers
Suuure
Strange things are occurring with the comments-I left one about "Reaper" and Behringer U-phoria audio interface, Abbey Road mastering service ( very cheap) to produce your music, and it was deleted...very strange.
Hey-oh Paul... Did you flip the front pickup yourself and are you glad you did?
Cheerios mate
Hi Jonny. Yes, installing these pickups was about the only piece of guitar DIY I’ve ever done. I’ll probably leave things to the tech forever more 🤣. And so I flipped the neck pickup around the same time as Peter Green passed away, as a wee tribute. However, it makes zero difference to the sound, they’re still in phase. Purely a visual thing.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Yea, I understand both the magnets and the coils get switched for the "Greenie" sound. Cheerios
would this also work on a telecaster?
Absolutely. There ain’t nothing that doesn’t work on a Tele 👌🤣
すばらしい!
アンプはMarshall ですか?
それは重いですか?
Thank you. Yes, it’s my Marshall Astoria. Yes, it’s quite heavy.
Gary played the guitar......Lage sounds like he's practicing all the time and is emotionally impotent.
Well I guess I can see why you would say that. And I can’t really argue with that opinion.
