Dear Mr. Cook, I'm 71 years old now, started playing at age 12, seriously at age 14-15. At that time I learned every note I could from my heroes of the time, Jimi, Clapton, Beck!, Page, Albert and BB King, shared the stage with Mandel, Collins, started trying to play more fluid and tastefully above my pay grade with Larry Carlton, etc, even Stan Getz for phrasing.. then stopped copying altogether by age 23 or so, and just tried to find my own voice. These last 15 years or so I've been severely disabled and unable to play live. Which leads me to the point of this long story, There are few players that really draw me in, my preferences being what they are. Matt Scofield, Josh Smith, Jack Ruch(sp.?) that is the wheelhouse I live in, and now, having stumbled upon this video, I just cannot stop watching and feeling everything you play. Your heart, fingers and brain all work simultaneously and effortlessly to play the most beautiful, and heartfelt blues/jazz (and everything else). Thank you for posting this. And yes, I will be slowing down and trying to cop some of the intricacies of your lines,(when my busted body allows), something I haven't done in a long while. There is no, and never will be, a "Best" guitarist, but you are among the top 5 guitarists that are my favorite over a lifetime of listening. Thanks again.
Wow. Your comment has left me kinda lost for words. Firstly, I’m touched that you find my playing enjoyable. That makes my work on these wee videos SO worth it. Thank you so very much. Secondly, I too love the players you mention - Jack Ruch is as smooth as double cream and never fails to leave a smile on my face. You mention your body is not playing ball at this point - well I can only imagine how frustrating that must be, especially as you are a musician. I will send healing thoughts and wishes to my friend and hope you get days where you can play that guitar of yours. 🙏
Totally agree. Paul has a great touch and, for me, is one of the most interesting and accessible players today. I felt moved to reply as our paths and tastes are similar. I'm a couple of years behind you and, these days, playing guitar makes my hands and fingers ache more than they used to, but Paul inspires me to carry on - every time.
@Kevin-the-Just ..Great players (to me) are rare these days. I sure miss the mid 60's to the very early '70's. Far too many "riff-oologists" for my taste. Paul seems to have combined the simplicity and gut level greatness of a "Bluesbreaker/Cream" Clapton combined with a hip and knowledgeable "Carlton/Scofield" intelligence all in one. I tried and did learn some things watching Paul but ultimately it is beat for me to just watch and enjoy this greatly talented player. I've got maybe 10 years worth of serious playing in me and even a shot at playing live a few more times (hopefully) before my f'ed up body with it's cascade of breaking parts does me in totally where I can no longer play for fun at home. Not being "dark", it's just the way things look... most likely. Thanks for the reply - SJB
wow, absolutely killer intro. really, blown away.
Thank you shieerlich 😊👍
You are one of the most musical players on CZcams Paul, I can learn a lot from you! 😊🎸
Well that makes me smile. Thank you man 🍻
fab

Well I wish you a speedy recovery mate. Cheers 🍻
I'm mad.you been holding out.haaaaa.happy holidays you guitar smokin man!
Thanks John 😊 Cheers
You could make Ralph machio jealous! Superb!
Thanks bambule 👍
Kinross! You've gone right past my place. :) A nice part of the world, I hope you'd agree!
(Love that Oswald, btw.)
Hi erajad, I could have popped in to yours for an impromptu jam session 🤣. Happy holidays mate.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Ha! Next time. :) Hope it's a wonderful holiday for you and yours!
Nice instrument
Playing guitar is a great place for expression.
The feeling we get when we show emotion while playing.
Its almost like making love, but not quite as good as it,though some may enjoy music more but i love em both 😂
You make good points 🤣🤘
Hi Paul. You might love the Wes tune "no blues" on Smokin' at the hall Note. 2 months ago was not into his stuff but now I listen to this one 10X day.
Just added it to my library, thanks to you. Cheers David, that’s some next level stuff!
Life experience definitely influences our playing style and certainly our preferences.
I would say your jazz is infused with rockabilly, hiphop, country, blues, European Staffordization, and of course all of your favorite musicians.
By the way, I feel fine, thanks for asking, doc.😂🤙
Well thank you GW! And on a different note, I’m glad you’re feeling well 🤘😊. Have a peaceful time over the holidays GW. 🍻

Thank you.
Merry Christmas to you and your family as well.🎄🏝🎉
Tis the season for giving (and taking), so steal away on any tune that suits your fancy.😉
Your playing improves with every video. You say you’re a blues player but there’s a definite leaning towards more complex jazz stuff coming on there….(I also find myself listening to more Pass, Lerch, and Lage etc instead of Clapton type players….). Unfortunately I can’t play as well as you but it’s fun trying. 👍🍷
Thanks Emlyn, yes I agree. A jazz line or two can definitely spice up a blues. Happy holidays 🍻
I recommend GuitarVersum (an Austrian channel by Sandra Sherman) Great teacher of jazz guitar..very patient and clear, well laid out) Like Emily Remler, she is a very clear and articulate player with great tone, great technique. Check her out Paul if you haven't..she has that Wes Montgomery stuff down. Brilliant playing as usual Paul. You have a great touch and sense of dynamics that I don't think can be taught.
Thanks Greg! And yes, I’ve stolen from Sandra Sherman before. She’s great!
Bloody hell that guitar looks & sounds good. You can't play like this without natural born ability.
Well thanks Paul, your words make me smile. 🍻
no honestly, thank you very much and Happy Christmas
Thanks Paul. Very inspiring site you have. I'm 67 and you keep me playing my friend. Have you ever tried a Colling electric?
Thanks Randy, I’m delighted you like my wee videos. To answer your question, no I’ve never had my hands on a Collings yet…. I only hear great things about them and I know they’re played by the likes of Julian Lage.
The spirits just don't want you to go Fender amps...
Almost seems like a hex
Absolutely. Happy holidays Jonny
Hey Paul, I'm currently working on a clone set of Knopflers red Strat. I know he used a 61 Strat with a Dimarzio FS1 in the neck position but I believe he moved it to the middle position at some point. I was wondering if you might know what configuration he used on the recording of Sultans? In the live performance the FS1 was in the neck but it sounds different on the record...to my ear.
Hi Ben. Glad to hear that you’re still in demand for your pickups! To answer your question, I’ve just had a fresh listen to the original version of Sultans. It definitely sounds like he’s wedged it in between bridge and middle. I’d bet on it in fact! It does not sound like the neck to me. Hope that helps.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 I agree, I think he put that hot pup in the middle
Hey Paul. Check out Matteo Mancuso, Sicilian guitar sensation. I know you are always on the lookout for ideas.
Thanks Randy. Yes, he’s incredible! In fact he’s SO beyond me that I’m not sure I can even steal anything from him. He’s fun to watch though, with that unusual right hand technique.
.... il get my coat......
🤣. Love it
clever stuff mate, way over my head but clever. But see when you run down those diminished scales ...feck me, it's like scraping nails down a blackboard 😱 wonder why that sequence of notes gets to me. you should have nipped in when you were in Kinross, only two mins up the road. Hows the cats doing ? Ours are in a constant bad mood with this feckin weather, feel like it's been months of rain, anyway, Santa's no far away, have you asked for anything ? you actually been good enough to deserve anything ? 😃 as usual , many thanks for posting
Cheers Charlie. And the cats are braw! I’ve spent my morning watching them try to stalk the blackbird in the garden. The blackbird is WAY too clever for them, it’s a right laugh! Happy holidays Charlie
Hmm, I think my intention is to not buy any new gear every year and yet 12 months later there's generally something that has appeared that wasn't part of the set up a year before.
I didn't even know that you had a Instagram account... Why should you not promote that?
Fair point, maybe I should do it more often, because my Insta followers seem to have increased since this mention 🤣. Cheers Samana 🍻
Nice, Cheers for Christmas too.
Thanks bluespower. Happy New Year mate 🍻
Emily Remler, a tragic story. Gone way too soon.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emily_Remler .You Paul are a thief, a prince of thieves. Long may you thieve if the result is what you are presenting to us lesser mortal players/thieves. We're just going to have to pinch bits off you!
Thank you mojogaucho, steal away, you’re welcome 🤣👍
