This channel is about using a VW campervan to access the great outdoors where I love to go walking, hiking or ride my e-bike. I'm based in the Scottish Highlands and probably have an unrivalled knowledge of the highlands and islands due to my long career (fifty years) in writing, as a magazine editor and author of 23 books, and making television programmes for the BBC about the area.
I've been running a longstanding campaign in Scotland to improve infrastructure for campervanners, particularly those, like myself, who simply want a low cost off-grid stopover for a night or two to go off hiking or biking. I use campsites but have little need of those expensive facilities that many campsites deem necessary today.
I hope this channel may be helpful to those who come to Scotland in their campervan. The number of Scottish aires is growing but there is still much work to be done before we can compete with France, Spain etc. Hope you find the channel useful.
Enjoy your campervan!

A bikepacking overnight in the depths of Glen Feshie, one of the most beautiful glens in the country and certainly the most fascinating
I'm based in the Scottish Highlands and I use a VW campervan to access the great outdoors, where I climb hills, ride my e-bike or gravel bike and just visit some of those places I've never been to. I've been climbing hills and mountains all over the world for 50 years and I'm a former editor of Climber Magazine and The Great Outdoors Magazine.

Thank you for the video. All the testimonials I see on CZcams come from clinics and doctor promotions. I've been diagnose HR about 3 months ago and I have heard many people had very bad experience with surgery and the final results. I'm glad it work for you Cameron tough. Does anyone in the comments had a bad experience and recommend agains it?
Thank you. I’m only 41 and have limitus. Note extremely painful, just uncomfortable. Hoping I don’t need surgery. I do loads of football and mountain biking as well as callisthenics. What age did you notice it start happening?
I was much older thaqn you are now. First noticed some discomfort in my early sixties.
@@CameronMcNeishOutdoors thanks. I suppose when it gets worse or painful I’ll go to the docs 😊
Wonderful. Good to see you on your gravel bike. However, with those places within a reasonable mileage of your home, I guess if it gets too difficult you could eventually easily adapt your Trek Powerfly 5. Many thanks for sharing.
I love the smell of burnt sausages in the morning.
wonderful, wow, you are absolutely correct, it does good for the soul, the outdoors cures the mind and body. Thank you for the video very inspiring.
Another great clip cameron great area to camp
brilliant video, just found your channel. i just did my first bike packing and my first solo holiday to Mull in June and loved it !(on a gravel bike too!) loads of stuff resonated with me that you talk about. just being out on my bike and in nature really helps keep the head clear. heres to more bike packing!!
Oh wow... I didn't know you had a YT channel. Yipee! I've watched you for more years than I care to count and love your books (one had me crying like an eejit when your dog died). Love your work Cameron... thanks for all you do! 🫶
Hope we don’t get to the point where we see tourists getting attacked and targeted like they are currently being in Spain. I know it can be an annoyance in the peak months, but many places are only still surviving because of those “annoying” tourists coming and spending lots of money.
Lots of parallels Cameron - diet changes, backpacking, now more bikepacking since older, GR20 (2008), even Glen Feshie recently in April ( 4 nights backpacking ), cycling with no rucksack - all gear on the bike. Designed & built my own compact bikepacking tent, which is held up by the bike. Have enjoyed your books and programs over many years. Nice to see you looking healthy, probably the change in diet. Responsible wild camping is so good for the soul, and getting to see and stay in the best places in Scotland. There's plenty of prime bikepacking trips in Scotland, look forward to future videos. Thanks. All the best
You also got a Hover X1 drone for your B-roll, Cameron? Some nice footage. The scenery wasn't too shabby either.
Great to see you still active in the outdoors Cameron, not letting recent health issues stop you - inspiration for us all. ATB for your continued recovery and ambitions for future trips.
Cameron. I absolutely love this video. Your voice and narrative are wonderful to listen to, and with an economy of words, your stories are rich in detail and thought provoking. I really hope you will make more videos like this one, and that it will be a very, very long time until, as you said, it’s time to return to the bosom of Mother Earth. Wonderful and thank you.
Food for thought!
Are you watching your cholesterol ect? Have you changed your diets since your health issues?
I've never had an issue with cholesterol. My arteries were blocked with calcium and no-one seems to know why, other than possibly hereditary. However, as with anything like this it gives you a warning and I have changed my diet quite a bit.
Great wee video Cameron. You're looking well....
Cameron I’ve been following your career through your various publications since the 80’S and as a one time avid reader of TGO. I really enjoy your natural presenting style and feel a kinship when I listen to speak about being outside. You get to the kernel of what it means to you, especially in this lovely little video. Thank you and happy bikepacking!
Great video. Respect
Thank you Cameron for an insight into your travels and wisdom. Keep up the great work.

Hi Cameron, great video and it reminds me of my cycle round Scotland in 2012 where I covered over 700 miles, it was the best trip I have ever done. 😊
I lived in scotland for 12 years and miss it very much. Had to go back south with work but I do return when I can, . Glen feshie is one of the places I head for. Thanks for reminding me, I love the place.
One of your best videos Cameron. Great to see you in your element in one of Scotlands best glens. I'm off on the TMB this Sept so was heartened to hear you recommend. The JMT is on my bucket list too. ATB and happy trails . Andrew
Lovely video Cameron. I am thinking of trying some bike packing since slowing down on the hills. Is your gravel bike an E-bike? I am only returning to cycling and the choice now is overwhelming! Thanks Dave
No, it's a non-electric gravel bike. I still use my e-bike for not for bikepacking. Essentially the distances I want to cover when bikepacking are greater than those allowed by the battery on my e-bike, which is about 40 miles max. I occasionally go off for two nights or more bikepacking so unless I have a way of charging the battery I'm restricted to non-electric.
@@CameronMcNeishOutdoors thanks and that makes sense. We are wardens on a very small site near Thornhill Dumfries and amazing range of bikes we get to see
Great Cameron, good to see you looking well, I think I camped on the exact spot as you when I bike packed in there last year. I'm glad you didn't cut the top off your finger with that knife 😂 All the best.

Thanks for taking us along with you to this beautiful glen. I’m also trying to lose a few pounds and that pasta, onion and herb meal is making me very 😋 hungry! I have the newer version of your MSR tent, bit lighter, more mesh, probably not quite as robust as yours but fine for my kind of camping. I love the outdoors, I’m a female in my 60s and a walk or gentle bike ride with my little brew kit and watercolour set is just heaven. We are so lucky to live in the British Isles with such a variety of landscapes.

Hi Cameron, oh that looks like sheer luxury, just you, and your loaded bike. The only bike packing I've done was years ago when I was a teenager, I think I was still at school in fact. My pal Davie Smith and me had old second hand bikes, mine was £4 from the Glasgow barras, everything was carried on our backs in old ex army back packs, although we called them rucksacks. We cycled from parkhead to Loch Lomond, when we tried to put the tent up in the lay by just past Duck bay marina we were told there was no camping there. So we just spent the night on the wee bit of beach there. Our healthy meal was square sausage fried in butter on a wee paraffin fueled primus stove. I still like my bike though, good to see you getting out on yours, looking forward to the next video.
You're absolutely correct when you say it's a healing place. Whenever we return home from a holiday in Scotland we feel like we've 'de-aged'! No place better for the body and soul. Thank you for your fabulous videos, Cameron.
Nice hearing you reminiscing Cameron, I was in Glen Feshie yesterday, first time in over 20 years. I was struck just how beautiful it is thanks to rewilding. If only the rest of Scotland could look like this. Look forward to your next video.
Yes. I was there in April, Mr Polson has and is doing a fine job. Been visiting there since the mid 80's and it's just getting better and better. Shows the potential for lots of other parts of Scotland too.
I've got a background in Ecology and love Scots pine it gets me emotionally when I see the hope for the future with this rewilding. This place looks like heaven.
Sublime as ever...
That was not filmed recently in this shocking summer we have been having certainly in the west of Scotland. That is a Glen I am really keen to explore on my bike but my days of solo camping are over for me as I would starve as pouring boiling water with my hand tremor would either end up with a scalding or repeated attempts until the water source ran dry. At least my range in and out on the eMTB would allow me to see a good bit of the scenery. Where is the best place to park up and gain entry in your opinion.
For a great ride that takes in Glen Feshie I’d recommend ‘The best bike ride in the Cairngorms?’ - also on Cameron’s channel. It really is good!!!! We parked at the car park in Feshiebridge - shown on OS map.
@@gcsScotland Thanks
Brilliant video as usual…Good to see you out and about…😅
Its a nice tidy site but a few trees would improve it. Thanks for the shots of the canal locks. A most helpful video.
You kidding best...They took away a far needed car park for there own Gain..Try parking on the front and yet they take away the car parks by putting in height barriers..£15 for an Aire is far to expensive...£15 it's a disgrace !!
Fair enough, no-one’s forcing you. They actually changed the parking to a formal arrangement because motorhomes were abusing it. Setting up camp with awnings and windbreaks so that beach users couldn’t park. Now people can park outside the site and campervanners have an excellent facility. I would suggest £15 is at the upper end for an Aire but as I said, if you don’t like the price don’t use it.
Thanks Cameron. Have to say having stayed on campsites with toilets and showers recently for £12 in Wales and £18 in North Yorks, £15 per night for nothing but a parking space and waste disposal is over priced.
Thank you for this we are hoping to do a Scottish road trip starting 14th July, had intended coming earlier but had problems with our motor home. We are starting at Moffat then to the Kelpies, Crieff, Pitlochry, Aviemore, Nain, Elgin, Lossiemouth, bypass Inverness, Fort Augustus, Fort William, Crianlarich, Killin, Callander Peebles, Hawick then back to County Durham. You have probably gathered we are retired so plenty of time to explore. The caravan park at Fort Augustus is just the type of park/ aires we are looking for so hopefully will find more on our journey around Scotland. We have been to all of these places before over the years when our children were young but would like to see them again at a more leisurely pace. Once again thank you for posting your travels and the campsites, we also enjoyed the Dumfries blog 👋👋👋
I think the pot is a wee bin - it has a bin symbol on the back 😊
Yes please Cameron for mor Aire reviews. We've stayed at the one you've just reviewed and will definitely go back there. The gent who owns the site told us about some decent walks from the site.
Aren't all the French Aires free for overnight parking? £10-15 to park overnight without any facilities seems like daylight robbery.
Ah, but this is rip-off Britain, not France. I've noticed on my travels more aires on the continent charging for overnights but of course there are still many in France where it is free and ideally that is how it should be. But no-one is being forced into aires. I like to have a safe and secure place to park overnight and preferably with somewhere I can dump waste and pick up fresh water. There is a growing resentment, even here in Scotland, towards those who park-up overnight in unsuitable places in a bid to save money and at the other end of the scale many camp-sites are really ripping folk off, charging upwards of £35-£45 a night for a van and two people. I personally don't mind a tenner, maybe £15 if there are facilities. Anything beyond that is too expensive for an aire.
@@CameronMcNeishOutdoors Thanks Cameron, it was my impression that the idea of Aires was that the visitor would use the local shop, pub, restaurant etc and the aire would supply a waste water dump and a fresh water supply with the overnight stop and the (usually) small community gets an income for very little initial outlay.
@@gedreillyhomestead6926 yes indeed, I believe that was the original intention but as I said we live in Tory Britain, though perhaps not for much longer.
