The Two BEST Walks in the North-West Highlands

We had a couple of nights at one of our favourite campsites - Sango Sands in Durness in Sutherland. From there we took a walk along to the wonderful Cocoa Mountain, who make some of the best chocolate you'll find anywhere. From there we enjoyed a glorious wander out to Faraid Head, a long promontory jutting out into the Pentland Firth, very near Cape Wrath, the most north-westerly point of mainland Britain. Next day we drove to Seigra, near Kinlochbervie, and walked the four moorland miles into Sandwood Bay, a place of intrigue. Sandwood Bay and its hinterland is rich in folklore and legend and my good friend Duncan Chisholm, the highland fiddler who made a wonderful album a couple of years ago named after Sandwood Bay, described it as a 'thin place.' According to the ancient Gaels such places are the connection between our world and that of the ancient Celts,, often barely discernable. Perhaps that explains the numerous sightings here of people long gone...
I'm based in the Scottish Highlands and I use a VW campervan to access the great outdoors, where I climb hills, ride my e-bike or gravel bike and just visit some of those places I've never been to. I've been climbing hills and mountains all over the world for 50 years and I'm a former editor of Climber Magazine and The Great Outdoors Magazine.

Sandwood is a glorious place is it not? The beach looks different every time you visit. First camped there at the north end with our "Chookiembras" many years ago. Aaah......memories........

Had many great times at Balnakiel. Even seen them practice bombing Garve island. We once arrived there and half the US Navy were in the harbour. Quite a sight.

Cracking stuff Cameron. Reminds me of a beach walk we did just north of Gairloch many years ago ... lovely conditions for 30 minutes outbound, then caught in a heavy squall on the return leg - it was great, Scotland in a nutshell!

Lovely that. And I agree, £20 a night is too expensive really.

My mother grew up on the shore of Loch laxford and to my shame I've never seen the area since I was a child.
I could have stayed with extended family all round the NC500 route before it became infamous 🫣
