Campervan Mindfullness: Is this a thing?

Is there such a thing as 'Campervan Mindfullness?' I believe there is. It's a way of using our campervans as a base from which we can access the natural world, the green world, and allow our own mental and physical rhythms to harmonise with those of nature. I use some of the lines of a WB Yeats poem as an initial inspiration.
    The Lake Isle of Innisfree
I will arise and go now, and go to Inisfree,
A small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made.
Nine bean rows will I have there, a hive for the honey bee,
And live alone in my bee-loud glade.
And i shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings,
There midnight's all a-glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evenbing full of the linnet's wings.
I will arise and go now, for always night and day,
    I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadeway, or on the pavements grey,
I hear it in the dep heart's core.
    William Butler Yeats
I'm based in the Scottish Highlands and I use a VW campervan to access the great outdoors, where I climb hills, ride my e-bike or gravel bike and just visit some of those places I've never been to. I've been climbing hills and mountains all over the world for 50 years and I'm a former editor of Climber Magazine and The Great Outdoors Magazine.

Such a beautiful little video…time to reflect, slow down and be. We all need to be reminded of our little part in nature and how big and healing it is for us tiny beings. Thank you 🙏🏻

What a beautiful 11 minutes Cameron. Profound and thought provoking, and encapsulates all the reasons we love our VW camper. Thankyou sir, I actually found the video quite emotional to watch, modern life has robbed so many of their basic humanity.

I recently spent time deep in the Ben Alder estate with only my black lab Coll .It was incredible ,never saw nor met anyone . The silence and sheer emptiness of this part of Scotland was indescribable. The night sky was amazing. Only downside, having to drive back to Inverness on the A9.

Great video Cameron. I get out when I can, still not got a van! But even simple pleasures like watching the birds feed from the kitchen window make me feel mindful & at ease, I often get a mouse coming for a feed.
    Take care and stay safe

Great video Cameron, to quote another poet, the great William Connolly, I must return to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky, I left my vest and socks there, I wonder if they're dry. Just like a lot of people from Glessca I've loved going out to the country side since I cycled out to Balloch from my hoose in Park head. My pal and me tried to camp on the grass at duck bay marina lay by, but were told to move on, wild camping was frowned on even back then. So, we just sat with our backs against the wall and fried our square sausage in butter on our wee primus stove. It was fuelled by paraffin, no gas back then, we spent the night there and cycled back home the next day. Good times, and only one puncture.

An excellent vlog Cameron, I’ve been campervaning all my adult life ... I build my wee own wee islands of tranquility and experience the mindfulness you so eloquently describe . A refuge where we get to leave our ego and technology back at home . I’m in my 70s and carry my kayak , bike , fishing gear ,walking boots and tow my rib ...which all aid in my fitness and fun but I drew the line at becoming a CZcams influencer for the impact and work load it would have on my activities and mindfulness ...it would be interesting to learn your views on this .

An inspirational video indeed . We all need to get off the treadmill now and again and feel the Peace of Wild Things
When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.
My favourite poem ,by Wendell Berry

One of your very best videos Cameron. As someone who is now in his 80's and not as physically able as I once was, your video will I hope grab the attention of those who have not enjoyed the wild. It's never too late to get out there. Recognise to your own capabilities (camper rather than bivouac, perhaps) but just don't put it it off .......... you won't regret it. Thanks again, an inspiring video for those who haven't experienced the wild and natural world.

I agree with all you say Cameron. If you are used to carrying all you need on your back then a campervan is indeed a luxury. The more simple our support the more I feel we get from wilderness. Also to accept, adapt and appreciate as the outdoor gives us is the basis of the joy of mindfulness in all its simplicity. I think it was the French philosopher Pascal that said that most of mankind problems come from the inability to sit at peace for more than 15 minutes. To wander through our beautiful land teaches us to sit at peace

Years himself said of his inspiration: "had still the ambition, formed in Sligo in my of living in imitation of Thoreau on Innisfree, a little island in Lough Gill, and when walking through Fleet Street very homesick I heard a little tinkle of water and saw a fountain in a shop-window which balanced a little ball upon its jet, and began to remember lake water. From the sudden remembrance came my poem "Innisfree,"

There is nothing better than the solitude of the outdoors mind you my particular heaven is meandering down a riverbank trying to winkle a fish from a wee pool, glide or run preferably a stream rather than a muckle river but beggars cannae be choosers.

I can relate to that John. I've been tempted to invest in a fly rod recently after watching the wonderfully mindful tv programmes of Paul Whitehouse and Bob Mortimer - Gone Fishing. Those programmes epitomise all that is good in spending time by a riverside, fishing, wildlife weatching or just day-dreaming.

    • @johnbrown3951
      @johnbrown3951 Před rokem +1

@@CameronMcNeishOutdoors I'm glad you were thinking of a fly rod and not a spinning rod because it is a far more enjoyable way to fish with a fly. I would recommend a few lessons if you are new to this pastime. My inspiration to take up fly fishing was Paul Young with his Hooked on Scotland series and the one that stood out was North Harris Estates Loch Voshmid which many years later I was offered the chance to become a Bank Manager on Lewis which I accepted within a second as I was a step closer to my dream. I became a member then a Director of Stornoway Angling Ltd Company and the members are allowed to fish the Amhuinnsuidhe waters on alternate Saturdays. I always had to pinch myself that learning to cast and fish the Ugie at Peterhead for night time sea trout had taken me to Salmon and Sea Trout fishing loch style in the Outer Hebrides oh and entering the Clydesdale Bank in Aboyne as office Junior to being Manager at Stornoway was also hard to believe as most of my Managers in the interim would attest to also. I had the pleasure of meeting Paul in Aberdeen as I caught him sniggering at some of the stories being told at out table at the now closed Earl's Court Hotel in Aberdeen I offered him the chance to join our table but he declined and continued to enjoy his meal and his book but I always wished I had met him after I had fished Voshmid and connected with their famed sea trout and been able to thank him for inspiring another angler.
You inspired me to buy an eMTB so I pass it to you to take up the noble art of fly fishing.
As a footnote I am having dinner tomorrow night in Edinburgh with another ex Banker who turned up in Stornoway working for The Royal Bank who also loves fly fishing and became a friend for life through meeting on the banks of The Creed in Stornoway even though he swapped Lewis for The Isle of Man we still speak regularly.
