There's Always the Hills, Even if They're Only Wee Hills....

At 74 next birthday I'm no longer capable of enjoying the long hill days and backpacking trips of my younger years, but I'm determined not to lose connection to the 'green world' - those places that have formed the bedrock of my life and work over the past 50 years. In this little video I try to explain why those places are still important to me and how I can maintain my connection to them despite the ravages of age. It's all about adapting...
I'm based in the Scottish Highlands and I use a VW campervan to access the great outdoors, where I climb hills, ride my e-bike or gravel bike and just visit some of those places I've never been to. I've been climbing hills and mountains all over the world for 50 years and I'm a former editor of Climber Magazine and The Great Outdoors Magazine. I live with my wife Gina in the shadow of the Cairngorms.

Spot on Cameron. I am 72 now and have always enjoyed the outdoors and the hills and mountains. The older I get and the less able I am to get out out, the more I seem to appreciate the wonder and awe of nature. And I realise that my time on earth is running out and it is time to properly reassess the broad sweep of what it all means.

Spot on indeed. I'm a southern jessie and our hills are even lower, but I can still wander amongst the trees, tracks and waterways of the Shires.

You spoke from the heart Cameron .It was emotional and true . A short video with a big message . I'm off to the Argylls hills for 2 weeks with my lab Coll and agree with your sentiments .The hills are precious and incredible places . They will still stand long after I'm gone and many a time I've said a silent thank you to these places .Well said .

Hi Cameron, don't tell too many people how great that is, the next thing you know it'll be another NC500 covered in motorhomes. Keep up the good work.

I don’t think you’ve ever said anything as important as that Cameron. You’re a skilled wordsmith and orator and when you switch that on to such an important message it’s incredibly powerful. Thank you and I hope it’s seen and heard by millions.

Ahhh - am reading your autobiography of the same name as this vlog which has prompted me to return to your channel (not sure how it dropped off my playlist) and am sorry to hear of your recent surgery. But it’s fantastic to see the subsequent vlogs where you seem to be on the mend!
    Keep on keeping on…👍 🥾🥾

A very philosophical narrative to this video tonight looking over a stunning vista in this community we call Scotland. I am nearing my 60th Birthday at the start of the year and although it is not that I am not looking forward to it but I am looking forward to my eldest son making me a grampa for the 1st time just a few months later. I am sure when the little one arrives my outlook on life will probably change to wonder how the world will change in their lifetime like yourself. A very thought provoking film tonight but sometimes it does us good to think of the bigger community rather than our own little one whoever big or small that is.

Very thought provoking Cameron and they look grand hills above your village. I have just turned 60 and a new grandchild just arrived in NZ. It makes you think of your own longevity however the hills are still important to me either big or small these days. Thanks for the video

Well said, Cameron. I too find solace in nature because it reframes the size of every human problem and folly, and there is peace in that.

You've a few years on me, Cameron, but so much of what you say here resonates. Ill health has been slowing me down a bit of late but I don't love the hills any less. Indeed, that love has grown stronger over the years, but it has also evolved; gone are the days when I lusted greedily after them, trying to climb as many rock and winter routes as I could each year. The relationship has become more companionable, less acquisitive and, in many ways, more meaningful.

Yes we are all just very small and insignificant compared to nature but we are just as important if we do the right things to help and preserve this awesome world. I’m just looking forward to being able to relocate to where I’m supposed to be and immersed in nature before time runs out.

How very true Cameron. Accepting that adaptation to age is tough after years of big mountain journeys and summits but it's a great skill I am learning. Finally back in the Border hill country to live and retire eventually and I can't wait to savour the local Donald's again with a lighter pack and slower pace over less distance. If enough muscle is built up, I may yet manage Arkle and Foinaven still on my list of to do. Thankyou for your wise words on reconnecting with the wild places. It is critical to our wellbeing and peace of mind.

Wise, very accurate and true words Cameron. Thank you for your very enlightened and intelligent input. I`m a lot like you in that after a very active life, soldiering and adventuring at 71 next birthday, I look forward to my quiet time in our wild places.

Oddly enough, even at the relatively young age of 51 I find myself often minded of my longevity on the hills. There'll come a day (for all of us) where we climb our final hill, it'll break my heart :(((

All the news is B---T, what you are about is real life. We need green energy. Sorry but Scotland has that in abundance. But its more than that, Scotland is a magic place that can also recharge the batteries of life, and i think that is what you are talking about.
