One point to clarify, Bill and CR confuse the two clubs for one. Max sits down with Felix at a club called El Rodeo. “To protect your Hermes façonnable ass.” Vincent kills Peter Lim and Fanning at Fever. In between is the Audioslave coyote sequence.

I was visiting family down in Miami and we were watching in my uncle’s garage where he had a projector and a massive screen. When Ray Allen hit that shot I jumped up so high I almost knocked the projector off the holder it was hanging from. My uncle had to fix it real quick so we didn’t miss the last five seconds. But we were all celebrating. It was pure pandemonium in the room. Great memory. Basketball kind of died after that in a way. The league became all about three’s, woke politics, and super teams. Maybe it’ll come back around, but idk. And LeBron started acting like he was the greatest thing since sliced bread and calling himself the goat. That still belongs to MJ, but those LeBron-Heat teams were super fun to watch. I’ll remember those days fondly. I am from Denver so I’m happy with the Nuggets right now ofc 😄

I’m obsessed with this movie and have been to LA just once. I think the man dies on a train will anyone notice concept plays well in most cities. I live in Charlotte and had an emergency organ transplant last year after four months in the hospital and less than two months to live. I very much had the experience of man dying in a hospital of his own hometown, will anyone notice. It really resonates, in fact I watched this on my laptop in the hospital twice. It’s a masterpiece. Cruise needs to move to some villain roles now that Maverick hit so huge. Great pod episode.

I know CR could only see the movie in the theater but I think saw it twice. There are zero pictures of pilots on the wall at the Hard Deck. Only patches and framed photos of sea craft and aircraft. The nit to pick at the first bar scene is that everyone calling him “Old man” totally miss that he’s literally wearing a Top Gun bomber. All while discussing who their mystery instructor is going to be. All that said, the bravado talk towards Mav continues all the way up to Dog Fight Football.

I absolutely disagree with Chris and Bill here. I'm far less a fan of LW2 than I am the original. It's a fine movie but personally I feel like its where the wheels begin to come off for the rest of the franchise. You really notice it in 4 with the self-indulgent non-sequiturs and arguing bits, people talking all over each other, that pointless Pesci-Rock rant about making phone calls (where even Rock mentions "why am I talking to you?" when they finally get broken up) and for me, that all starts from the second movie. The first one feels like such a proper crime action thriller with very little fat on it. No squeezed-in comedic relief (in the third one, Pesci becomes a real estate agent so he can argue with Murtagh about all the damage done to his house?), the plot is just murky enough to feel conspiratorial, and the villains are just kind of iconic, trope-naming heavies. #2 has solid villains, a great love interest, and some wild set pieces. It just, in hindsight for my tastes, is the beginning of a quick spiral into the farce of 3 and 4.

What a joke... 3 cameras on Simmons (including a medium side shot? To whom the fuck is Simmons allegedly speaking?! And - Next time, can please get a close-up angle, from the floor - so that we can get a good look at Simmon’s nose hairs? Simmons says he wrote an article about this game a year after this event, but he seems ill-prepared for THIS segment (despite all the camera set ups): - ”I THINK he (LeBron) had 3 MVPs by that point” - - “I THINK LeBron ends up hitting the 3, to cut it to 2” (when Heat down 5, 28 sec remaining) - - ”I THINK the Spurs LIKE tried to take [the ball] out” (after the big 3 by Allen, Simmons channeling his inner Valley Girl) - - ”The time got LIKE screwed up…” (more Valley Girl...) - I perceive Simmons to be typically well-prepared, but there’s a lot of “I think” / Valley Girl type shit here… I surmise that this was SUPPOSED to be Simmons ‘organically’ recalling this event, but - I ain’t buying it. There has been almost 10 years to analyze this event, and a Big example that would have helped more than this emotional BS: Why was there a whistle right after Allen’s big 3? There were 5+ sec left, Heat had Zero time-outs, there was plenty of time for SA to go up the floor, without the Heat being able to set up their D. Could Simmons have at least MENTIONED that aspect, and that further helped the Heat - especially given that Simmons ‘killed’ Pop during the postgame?! (regarding Duncan being out of the game) - Sheesh... Thanks, but NO Thanks - to ‘Ringer Moments’ - Cheers...

Spielberg/Stallone/Lucas killed off the New Hollywood Movement. They were about movies, not reality. Rocky was about boxing movies, not boxing. And it wouldn't get made with a black Rocky. Jaws was Spielberg ripping off The Thing 1951. They were crowd pleasing roller coaster rides that made so much money that studios wanted EVERY movie to be Jaws. Even ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN was billed as the thinking mans Jaws. So fuck those 3 guys.

Agree on Exorcist. Disagree on Rosemary's Baby. RB is what Polanski called Holocaust Horror. We're stuck in a,place with Mia. The movie doesn't telegraph the horror to come, it uses stone carvings so as not to be accused of lying to the audience. The psychological screws keep tightening just as the Nazis kept making things worse for the Jews. And the ending is the apex of the Holocaust: the Death Camps. The FINAL solution. When the world was aghast, the Nazis looked up, puzzles, and said,"What? We told you in the 1920s what we were going to do. We didn't lie about it or cheat or fudge. And YOU,kept doing business with us so fuck you lBM. AND Renault..And Bayer Aspirin." That is a very adult approach to horror. Tell us what is going on and what the bad guys are going to do, then do it.its a shock because we root for Mia Farrow and we tell ourselves that nothing bad will truly happen to her. This IS a big time Hollywood movie, right?

This is the best MI in the franchise. I saw this at age 15 in a THX Certified movie theater. Two things about that. First, I don’t understand why people find this movie so confusing. At 15, as I watched Jim Phelps lie to Ethan Hunt and we see Ethan realize what really happened, it landed with me immediately what had happened and all the pieces came together. It’s complex, yes, but totally understandable. Second, the Langley suspension scene in a THX Certified theater was unreal. It felt an offense to breathe too loud. I walked into this movie a movie watcher and walked away from this movie an obsessive. The next day I began seeking a surround sound system and wanted more movies that didn’t feed me everything but showed me everything I needed to know to allow my mind to put the pieces together. In 1996 I don’t think there had ever been a blockbuster big budget movie that respected the audience enough to blow shit up AND make them think too. The lack of any shown intimacy makes it great. This is an instance when telling not showing works better. We think there might be something going on between Claire and Ethan but we never see it. Then Phelps tells us Ethan “coveted his wife.” Bingo. It did happen. That is why Jim shoots Claire first. Jim feels betrayed that Claire slept with Ethan. We know this because on the train Phelps gives us the covet line. Meanwhile, the sexuality Max throws at Ethan totally works. She’s a female international warlord/arms dealer who always gets what she wants. She’s impressed by Hunt’s bold play and thinks this young man is totally gettable for her. Senator Waltzer is not a confusing part. Way overthinking this. He’s a real Senator and they’ve never used him before. We know this because when Phelps tells Ethan they’re using him Ethan is surprised and amused. So we know this isn’t an ongoing ploy. We also get the information dump on Waltzer that he’s classically liberal and believes covert government operations are a serious civil rights issue. That’s why it’s amusing to Hunt they use him. The operational purpose they use Waltzer is because they need to get into a US Embassy and that requires someone who is a known government representative. In search for said known representative they learn Waltzer will not be in DC but in Ireland. This gives them the opportunity to plant an Irish IMF agent to pose as a fishing guide to ensure the duration of Waltzer’s trip. They can’t have him showing up in DC for a vote and be in Eastern Europe the same day. That’s why it works perfectly. The duality of him being the senator out of the country and him being against tax payer funded covert operations makes it poetic. It took me longer to write the very obvious information dump De Palma gave us in like 15 seconds of screen time.
