I think your point about collecting them when you have an addictive personality is important. I had six over a period of 25 years and I found mine to be very docile and friendly. I handled mine frequently and they never stressed out. I always gave them the choice of being held. I was never bit or threat posed or had hairs kicked at me. I looked at them as pets and get a lot of negativity from this. But I think it's up to the owner and you have to be able to read them and respect them. My two Mexican Red Knee Girls lived 20 and 25 years and they were very happy. No one believes me but it's true. I believe through my personal experience that they are capable of cognitive thinking and l saw it myself. I just hope that many people watch your videos because you do have to great amount of information that can help all keepers stay updated on this hobby. 😊

I don’t have spiders. I hate spiders. They scare me. I’m not trying to be a smarta$$, but why keep a “pet” you can’t pick up and interact with? If just keeping them in a enclosure with a chance of maybe seeing them pop out once in a while, what’s the point? Wouldn’t it be better just to leave them in nature?

I’m wondering. If using some of these things for substrates and worrying about mites, etc....why not (if the package is small enough) put in the freezer to kill any critters that might be in there? I do that with flour and box cake mix etc (so it kills any bus/bug eggs that might be in them) and was wondering if that would work? Then take out of the freezer after 24+ hours and let it go back to room temp.

It's probably wise to hang on to our invoices from purchasing captive bred specimen, in case they try to take away our pets.

Thanks for your video. I have been quite lonely lately and want to take care of something that doesn't require a lot of attention, and I don't want something that requires handling. Always been intrigued by these critters. A Brazilian black would be nice or a curly. I have no idea what's around my area though. Anyway, your vid has given me some food for thought. Thanks!

Bought a avicularia recently I read about SADS and understand ventilation is important for preventing this, unfortunately i bought it because I was afraid of the T being sold out from under me so i ordered the enclosure with good ventilation but for a few days it was on the wood chips the pet store had him on (they dont know how to meet the needs of their spiders) until the stuff arrived. Moved it in, and he hangs in the side of the enclosure refusing to go inside his log. And randomly about 5 minutes ago he fell into the substrate and started writhing with a death curl it looked like😢 i gently nudged him with my tongs and he started moving. Any help or advice on what it was? He seems fine now he crawled back up to the side of the enclosure, I hope he wasn't attempting to molt and i interupted him. Im still new to the hobby 😬

Australian Funnel Webs are easily the most dangerous. In fact, the 35 currently described species of Australian Funnel Webs, would easily fill all 10 spots. It's not even close. The data on the few claimed six eyed sand spider bits is spurious at best. So without proper envenomation information, and considering the unlikelihood of a bite, it's impossible to place them on a list. If you look at severe envenomation rates, or how likely a bite is to cause server illness, the bite from a Sydney Funnel Web is at least 34 times more likely to cause serious illness, than a Brazilian Wandering spider bite (0.1-0.5% vs 17%). The Sydney Funnel Web doesn't even hold the title for highest severe envenomation rate. The Southern Tree Dwelling Funnel Web (Hadronyche Cerberea), holds that distinction, with a SER of 75%. That's at least 150 times more likely to Eff you up, as the bite from a Brazilian Wandering Spider.

I’m thinking of getting one, how would I keep the bottem layer of substrate damp like you mentioned in the video? Just wanna make sure I’m doing everything right for my first one.

In the tapping on the glass part, you said it’s just a male looking for a female, and nothing to worry about. However, the video showed two tarantulas engaged in a wrestling math, rolling around in the enclosure. I’ve seen footage of mating, and it looked much different. Is the rolling around an indicator of danger? It just threw me off, and I’ve heard that pairings should be carefully supervised.

For me personally I wouldn’t recommend a Mexican red knee or flame mine have always been bolty/ skitish but I do know a lot of people love them however I would highly highly recommend the Brazilian black for me it’s hands down number 1 beginner tarantula and close second Arizona blonde but I’m the uk the black and Arizona blonde can be very pricey? My Brazilian black cost £100 and it was a small juvenile
