- čas přidán 15. 05. 2024
- I have received a lot of messages lately asking what I would suggest as the FIRST pet tarantula someone new to the hobby should get. I have also gotten a lot of questions from parents and educators asking for an easy and calm species of theraphosidae they could get for their children or classroom. I have made a few videos that kind of answer those questions, but this week I giving you my list of the BEST PET Tarantulas that are safe, easy and hardy! If there are species that did NOT make my list, be sure to tell me your picks AND WHY in the comments!

please reply to my msg
Solid recommendations Richard. The only thing I like to add to people looking for a "first tarantuala" is to make sure they digest growth rates and manage expectations if they buy slings. My first was a B. albiceps which I got as a sling and it did moult a couple of times, but then went into her burrow and hung out there for a full year before finally moulting again and coming back out. I knew it was a "slow growing species", but that year of a pet hole is why I have so many spiders now. Go in eyes open and realize that what starts with one spider can quickly get out of control :).
Question.... so when your T went into hiding, what did you do about feeding it? did you still consistently offer food throughout the year? If so, was it live food or did you pre kill? I'm curious cause I have a sling doing the same thing and I'm trying to figure out how to handle it...
I did occasionally toss in a cricket but she didn't care and had walled off anyway. As far ss I can tell she just didn't eat for a year. Didn't let the place dry out and let her do her thing. Spider's gonna spider.@@King1071
@@King1071What I always did with mine when they wouldn't eat I would just wait till he/she would come out and start looking around. Usually they only do that when they are getting hungry. I haven't owned many though so don't take that as concrete because that has only been my experience.I used to feed my one tarantula mice once a month.
@@JAYTEAM187 I didn't see mine for about 2 weeks after bringing him home. He was fed once before he burrowed...I dug his ass up to make sure he was ok recently but he just made a new hiding spot, still not eating so I'm just playing the waiting game now... Was just curious about how and if I should still offer food
@@King1071don't dig them up! Slings burrow as a defense mechanism and will come up and eat when they are ready. they can go months without eating if they choose to so don't worry. Just let it do it's thing, keep it's substrate moist so it doesn't dehydrate and let it come up when it's comfortable.
I never thought I'd say that a black tarantula is beautiful but that black tarantula is beautiful
It's so beautiful! So shiny and healthy -looking 🩷
I got my first tarantula a few days ago, a juvenile Tliltocatl albopilosus, and I just wanna say your channel has been amazing with me digesting tarantula content. You're extremely entertaining and educating to watch and I can't wait to watch more of your videos!!
Awesome! Thank you!
This has been the best channel for info. I got my first on Sunday and can see how this can be a very addictive hobby.
Im getting more and more interested in Tarantulas and a shop associate talked to me about this channel.
Just this video helps me so much, its channeling all my questions.
Because i didnt know if i should find a species I like first, or looking at the set up recommendation first and so on
This channel is full of so much knowledge especially being a new T owner and looking at another one for the future
My first T is a Cyriocosmus elegans - she's been a real challenge but we adore her! Your videos have been super helpful in our research 😊
I have three C elegans slings and they are SO TINY! Such a cool species tho.
@@503menagerie3 they are! Super cute though!
challenging how? finding the right feed?
I had a male Aphonopelma iodius that was basically bulletproof till he hooked out and died. The Iodius is actually native to southern Idaho and can survive our cold winters by burrowing. A little harder to find that the Chalcodes, but I’d say slightly hardier than the Chalcodes too.
As someone who is looking at getting a pet tarantula I didn't know where to start so this video has helped me alot😊
Top 5 Most Active Tarantulas next
cool idea
Yeah pls❤
I second this
My Carabana versacolor is by far my most active. Still a sling, cruises around the enclosure regularly. It's a good thing it's not in the wild bc it would have been bird food long ago. We named it Houdini because it escaped twice the first day I had it. It also appears to be the most intelligent one I have if that's even a thing.
Rose hair is also a great beginner T... that was my first T. She was a sweetheart and lived for 23 years!
I've been reading and watching videos like a mad person because this year I'm gonna get my very first spider, I've decided on a G.Pulchra, usch pretty spiders.
Thank you for your videos, they are very helpful! :D Keep up the good work
I would love to see a Top 5 Most Difficult to Keep / Expert Level Tarantulas next
My Hamorii can go on that list - I must have the only one with an attitude
Research the HMac. Probably one of the most dangerous of you're into nightmare creatures. It climbs, it teleports, it has a very bad attitude, and it has a very nasty bite. I wouldn't want it in my house. 😂
When I was questing for my first Tarantula, I saw your videos on the Brazilian Blue Dwarfs. Not giant spider + No medically significant venom + No irritating hairs was HUGE in my consideration. They're also beautiful display Ts. 1 year in I have 2 and absolutely love em.
AWESOME selection in that list
My first T was the B smithi, or that was what it was called in the 2000s. Then collected few more new worlds but then I got into old worlds and never went back. I now only keep pokies and Asian old worlds.
I fully agree with you on all of these!
Great video, love your channel. I looove tarantula content. I sure hope I can get one one day.
Just popping in to say that your coffee isn't just a good cause, it's GOOD. I've given a few bags as gifts now, and they're all hooked too! Do tea next if you can... My first was a GBB, and now I have three more, and my beloved scorpions!!
Your sets for this video are gorgeous! I can see you put a lot of time and effort in! I love that you were inspired by the natural habitats
Always a pleasure to watch your content Richard... We need a video of a Panama Blonde 🙏🏻🥲
Couldn’t get a flame knee anywhere in uk so I settled for two brachypelma Boehmei I do love my brachys 😂 awesome video as always 👊🏻
After watching your videos for a while I got my first T a few months ago. I didn’t get one on this list but my Avicularia Avicularia has been doing great. It’s still small but I’ve had it for a while now and I’m in love. Eats great, it’s out on display a lot, but it’s not the greatest for handling because it likes to bolt out of nowhere. I’m definitely going to keep an eye out for these species when I get life situated. Love the videos man, if I’m ever curious about something I check out this channel
I just got my first T. A gramastolo pulchra juvenile.
Thank you so much for your videos and posts. I always have had a fear of all spiders and you have helped me overcome this fear. I am so excited and humbled by this experience.
Hay bro I don’t have or want a tarantula but your videos came up on my feed it’s very interesting video I really enjoyed it well done .
I got a 3 inch female brachypelma boehmei over 2 years ago as a first T. In part, thanks to your videos! And she's still amazing
Great video! Started with a Geniculata, a GBB and an Irminia, then added a Sazimai, a C. elegans and finally got two Pulchra slings which were hard to get here in Germany and almost unaffordable as adults hence the slings.
Your channel helped a lot with the decision to become a T. keeper, so thx!
I used your video on tarantulas that are usually out on display for picking my "first" tarantulas. And you were spot on, they are all out the majority of the time.
Thank you, these are great Tarantulas. I own some medically significant old world and these calmer ones help me show something to people and bring up medically significant to them when they are ready.
I love my A chalcodes and T albopilosus
Awesome video. My first T was the GBB. But I finally did get a Brazilian Black! I'm stoked to have it. Now, just to wait for it to grow. 😅
I would like to thank you, Richard for helping me get into this awesome hobby! I recently got my first T, who is a juveinile T. Vagans, and I plan on getting a C. Cyanopubesense.
Dude. I am not sure if anyone has told you this. But your hockey shirt is dope! Keep it up with the videos. They give me something to listen to and learn from while I am doing housework.
Thanks! Will do!
I have 3 of these 5 and own a brachypelma species but I have the emilia. Good list!
Got a G.pulchripes large sling as a first T last week 🥰 loved everything I've read about the species. Don't mind the slow growth rates - realise I may have a pet hole for a while, but looking forward to watching them slowly grow
I love the Mexican Red Knee
Awesome video!!! New to the hobby and I was just thinking of buying a new T and had some trouble deciding.
Well worth getting one. So easy to care for.
That curly hair is amazing. I got mine as a freebie as a means to try to help me get over my arachnophobia.
Great to see the _Grammostola pulchripes_ get some love, that was my first T. I picked her up in as a half inch sling in late 2018 for $15 from a local tarantula breeder that had gotten some _G. pulchripes_ in a trade, and now she’s about 5.5” DLS. To this day, she’s still my favorite pet.
I can attest to the _Aphonopelma chalcodes_ being slow growing, I got mine as a half inch sling in late 2019, and today (February of 2024) it’s under two inches DLS. Has its adult coloration, tho.
I’ve got a _Brachypelma hamorii_ and a _Brachypelma smithi,_ and I wouldn’t handle either one (not that I really ever handle my Ts), they both kick hairs at the slightest provocation
You've helped so much as a new owner! I love my Brachys! By the way, I need a decaf tarantula coffee!
that is awesome. and I am working on a decaf roast and it should come out at the same time as the new Brazilian Origin launch.
It's amazing what a spider this is, it looks so big, so impressive.
What gorgeous Ts and there's deffo some FluffyButts among them , great vid Richard .
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video....some beautiful spiders in the list....🏴
Since I was very young, biology and animals were always my passion and I discovered my fascination for arachnids through your channel a few months ago. I quickly got a eresus and a phiddipus and just last week my first T, a cyriocosmus elegans.
Thank you for showing me what fascinating arthropods spiders are and what awesome pets they make!
That is awesome!
I got my first not too long ago and she’s a Mexican red rump shes very calm so far and has a great feeding response
I'm so so so excited about the next coffee. I can't wait 😍 I got my Zebra Knee coffee before Christmas so I won't be getting one now. But maybe you could include a pin with the first x amount of orders of the next coffee? 😊 I looooooove this video! And I love your jersey! My Brazilian Black molted, for the first time in my care, a couple days ago, and it's black now! I just love it so much! I also have 4 Albos, one sling and three adults. Hoping my female is gravid 😊 They're so fluffy and pretty! I have two Chacos (slings) and they're so adorable! I wish I could find a couple juvies or sub adults. I adore them!
You may as well get a grip of them to save shipping cost. 😁 Also take advantage of freebies. I got 3 of mine as freebies. For my first batch I got two grammastolas, two avics, a Brazilian Blue Dwarf, an LP, and a phormictomus dominican purple. That's probably my first and only batch. I'm raising the LP for a friend that is a teacher - it's going in his classroom when it gets big.
As a new keeper, I can say that 6 is an ideal number. I would get bored with just one, but if I had more it would be too much. As it is I can enjoy and appreciate each one. While one is in pre molt, another is being interesting. I'm also into "nice" display enclosures and this is a good amount to show off. Having a variety of genus is also great as you can see different behavior. Cheers on the new space Richard! I started learning from you guys last summer, got my batch a couple months later. Now after being a keeper for about 6 months I'm settling into the routine, watching the little guys grow.
My favorites are currently phormictopus sp. I have a full green & Dominican purple but I have two dolichotele rufoniger on the way & I’m so excited to raise those babies up.
My first was Grammostola rosea. She lived around 20 years in my care. I still miss her.
My 1st Ts are G Pulchripes and LP. I love them both.
Im brand new to this channel and to the Tarantula enthusiasts 😊
I m thinking about getting one, I dropped to a reptile/spiders/frog store today and someone recommended me this channel.
Thank you for this (amd probably all the other videos I didnt watch yet)
I work in a corporate pet store chain and keep stopping longer and longer in front of the Tarantulas.
Im getting obsessed with one, I think its the Mexican flame knees, of not, its pretty similar to this one and Im glad its in the top 5 ones.
Im gonna wait to get a new pet after my hamster pass on. I figure it will give the time to know better about the species and how to care for them.
So glad I now know about this channel ! ❤
Also.... Now Ive see the add for the coffee, i need to know more about the beautiful zebra knee one!
This video also made me realize that yeah, no, black tarantula kind of freak me out a little... Even if the video was very cool.
Welcome to the channel. I hope you enjoy the other videos 😀
Cool list, you must’ve had a very different experience with your auratums than myself! Been lucky enough to keep a few and they are consistently the most defensive & kick the most hairs of all my brachys alongside the boehmei, as you say temperaments will vary lol. Beautiful though, and well worth having! Best beginner Ts imo would be Thrixopelma cyaneolum, eupalaestrus campestratus & homoeoma chilense if these species weren’t so rare 😢
Looking into getting a tarantula and I just started my tarantula research--this was super helpful, thank you!
Glad I could help!
Just got my first in Sunday. Such a cool pet.
@@EarGal awesome, congrats! what species did you get?
@@2springs3winters5 A B. Emilia, Octavuis is his name. He's so mellow.
@@EarGal Aww so cute!
Thanks for your video. I have been quite lonely lately and want to take care of something that doesn't require a lot of attention, and I don't want something that requires handling. Always been intrigued by these critters. A Brazilian black would be nice or a curly. I have no idea what's around my area though. Anyway, your vid has given me some food for thought. Thanks!
I agree with all of these, especially the g.pulchripes. I've had dozens of species over the years, and I'd say pretty much anything grammastola, brachypelma, aphonopelma and anything that was previously classified as one of these (like the curly hair) would be great for a beginner. My first was an a.seemani, and she was a darling.
My first T was a curly hair! She's great. Definitely a bit of a pet rock but she's usually very relaxed.
I got a chaco golden knee sling from Swifts Inverts that is doing well so far! I'm hoping they'll be a good one for me to handle to show some of my friends who might be a little scared of tarantulas that they're not all that scary.
Hello great video information yes that AZ tarantula is the one I have been watching for over three years last year it was under ground for 8 months and it had babies I have videos of them in my tarantula playlist Richard
5:17 best tarantula finally making their return to this series 😍
My first T is a Brachypelma Boehmei. I'm not sure if it's male or female but it's a beautiful little thing. I got it as a juvenile in September '23
Thanks for the tip. I currently have a pink toe. Hard to imagine anything more docile than he is. I’ve been really considering an Arizona blonde as my second, but maybe I need to consider a Chaco
The only one I can think that could possibly be a solid add to this list is. Aphonopelma Seemani - Costa Rican Striped Knee. That was a great list!
A. Seemani was my first tarantula. Wonderful species!
My first one was Grammostola rosea, a rose hair tarantula. I kept her for 13 years.
i'd love that tarantula coffee in keurig pods if possible. would be great to leave in the lunchroom at work and see people freak out.
Hi im from the Philippines a like your videos
My first A. geniculata ❤
OMG I NEED THAT TC JERSEY
Hey Richard! I was just wondering if you could do a video on the Brachypelma Klaasi? Thank you in advance. I hope you are having a wonderful day!!
Great suggestion!
Just got my first tarantula. Got a B. Emilia. He is such a cool mellow dude. He is getting used to his new home.
great list! Can't recommend Aphonopelma species though, but to anyone their own opinion :) Aphonopelma take ages to mature and to then get them as WC adults has an even bigger impact on their wild population than we can think, even when it's still legal in the US to collect.
My first two were G pulchras, one sling and one VERY small juvi. That was a year ago and they've both grown massively. The juvi is like a mini adult now and the sling has molted three times and is already quite black. I have five other NW species now but they're definitely my favourites and I'd say the most bomb proof out of any of them.
My first T is a T. albo, a MM. I absolutely adore him! He sometimes hides, but most of the time he’s sitting out or moseying around his tank. I haven’t tried to handle him, but I think he would tolerate it just fine. He’s never ever kicked hairs, I can take out his water dish and move his bark pieces around looking for his pet roaches or take out dead crickets and he doesn’t do anything. I just got a T. vagans that appears to be close to adult size because it has a red rump and the velvety black legs. And I got a juvenile B. hamoraii that looks like it’s going into premolt. I don’t plan on handling either of these, but to just enjoy them. My curly hair will not eat dubias, but just crickets.
My first tarantula was the gooty sapphire ornamental and the gbb tarantula still have both there females yeah
Wow. Starting w a gooty. That's crazy. 😂 I like the pokies, they sure are pretty but I don't think I'll ever do an old world. Super cool but I don't want something in my house that can hurt me that bad. Something about a teleporting 9 inch spider that could ruin a few months of my life is beyond me. Seems almost as scarry as a beginner level venemous snake.
Mine too, I mostly bought old worlds as my first. It actually took me two years of study/research before I acquired my first batch which includes P. metallica, an OBT, C. darlingi, GBB and A. junodi.
I have almost everyone of those except the flame knee
LP is a pretty good one
1. Rose hair
2. Rose hair
3. Rose hair
4. Rose hair
5. Rose hair
I can't say enough good things about my curlyhair, Hashbrown. She was my first tarantula and I adore her.
Nice
"The curly hair - The pet rock of tarantulas". :D
My first were the Hamorii and the Phormictapus Auratus. Last summer i went to a reptile convention and bought a Tliltocatl Vagans and a Grammostola Pulchra. The pulchra was the only one i could find amongst the thousand spiders. And indeed payed a pretty penny for her. She is around 1,5 years old confirmed female so it was worth it.
Avicularia avicularia absolutely deserve an honorable mention and to be in the top 10 even if not the top 5. I can understand their super itchy hairs and arboreal preferences can make them more difficult--mine never kicked hairs at me, but she also never failed to give me anxiety by molting in the highest point of her enclosure as she could no matter how much I tried making the substrate the ideal molting location (istg she did that just to make me scared lol).
My first was a 2year red knee female. 2nd a month later a mex golden red rump sling (Brachypelma albiceps), 3rd another month after that a mex black velvet (Tliltocatl schroederi)
My 4th is going to be my first arboreal Venezuelan sun tiger (Psalmopoeus irminia) going to stop after that as the only thing stopping me is desk size
My first pet tarantula was a hot mess. My first was an avicularia avicularia. Aboreal enclosure, check. Heat light. Yeah big mistake. This was about 7 years ago. But after watching these videos I feel more confident that I can give my next one the proper care requirements. Bought it from a chain store and yeah that's a no no. I found a decent online dealer (don't know if they breed or not) and I want to get a tarantula and a vinegaroon. So excited but scared lol. I love reptiles and tarantulas are growing on me and are more appealing due to their care requirements in comparison to other pets. That and you can have a collection in a 1 bedroom apartment which I am so thankful to have. I'm doing a lot of research and thanks so much for your videos.
Love the videos bro ... keep them coming... but was wondering if u kno anybody selling M.M chaco golden knee....c. marshalli.... p. Irminia... rose hair
Do vids on rehoming Arboreal tarantulas and also list the most difficult species of tarantulas to care for in the hobby. Also make more vids on the Venezuelan Sun Tiger that is the one spider i want as my first.
Just asking no big deal
Please goes a long way
ohh boy XD i have to confess i just started the tarantula hobby a few months ago and my first t was an OBT and I am in love with the little beast but i definitly would not recommend it... The lady at the petstore said itll be fine if i have a catch cup... now i have a curly hair also and its a whole diffrent world of interacting with them...
I have G. pulchra and it hates new houses😅 it spend almost a week just sitting on the wall of the enclosure, not touching the ground. Everything is fine afterwards. It's a good thing, it doesn't grow fast. This way the rehousing is happening not so often.
Great recommendations, Richard! I just got my first Curly Hair sling and had our first successful molt early December. It didn't eat for a week and then burrowed down covering* the entrance for another week before resurfacing. Recently, it stopped eating again but then went into it's burrow and has not come out in a month.... i'm starting to get worried because it used to be out on display a lot, moving around and just being very active... any advice would be amazing. i'm particularly debating on dropping a small cricket in its enclosure to see if it will come out to eat it.
I want all of them, already got the pulchripes, hamorii and albopilosus.
The pulchra is at the moment not available at my local dealer and the chalcodes is rare to come by here in europe, especially localy. I was considering ordering both of them, but in my current situation im not really in a position to get new ts in the near future :(
As soon as I clicked on this, I was getting ready to argue post you for NOT putting Gammostola pulchripes in the list. Number 1 all the way!!!
🤣
My First T was a Curly Hair, got a P Metallica, GBB and Caribena Versicolor the next month😂
Hello, English is not my native language, I use a translator, could you talk about Chilobrachys sp. "Prachuap Khiri Khan" and the Tliltocatl kahlenbergi? Your channel is very entertaining, quick and valuable information
I have all the ones in the list but, can I add the T vagans............I have a juvie female that I got as a 4mm sling. She's three years old now and is a sweetheart. She's never shown any defensive movements
My first was a Grammostola Pulchra. Her name is Legsi and she is lovely. Does NOT want to be handled. I don't mind though. She's wonderful.
I told that the Rose Hair Tarantula was also a good first choice for a beginner.
Maybe... but look up "Psycho Rosie"... it's a coin toss
i have 2 chacaos, i love em,
Hi Richard, I was wondering about the tarantulas called Rose something I read a true story from the library called The Legacy of Annie Rose. It's a beautiful book about a woman who was deathly afraid of Spider and then she met this Tarantula and they became best friends. I love Jumping spiders and I'm interested in Tarantulas but they still kinda scare me with how they walk. But when they do the little pet shows at the library I'm brave enough to let one crawl on my head. I also heard their hairs/ bites feel like bee stings and I'm really scared of bees yet. I am also really scared of snakes but I want to get rid of all these fears I have. Will I ever be able to rid myself completely of these phobias?
If you buy them when they are a bit older avic avic are some of the most sweet ones I have, my avic is actually nicer to handle than my curly hair, red knee or Arizona blonde though could just be that specific temperment
I got a GBB and a Brachypelma emilia as my first T's. dying to get a Brazilian Black but man they're expensive right now
I’ve been real fortunate with my curly hair, it’s never kicked hairs or displayed a defensive posture
I kinda missed the GBB in this list! Haha
If you have a blue thing to angela , could you possibly do a video on one??? Plz and ty
i can’t help but giggle every time new keeper advice is about not worrying when a T doesn’t eat, i’m new to tarantulas but i’m a ball python keeper, my guy has gone on a 5 month hunger strike for funzies
