  • in this video we discuss the PROS and CONS of keeping tarantulas as pets. of course I think they make great pets, and even great FIRST pets, but it's really subjective so I decided to break it down to help people decide if it's the right pet for them

You forgot the number one con of owning a T: IUts people's reactions to them. Fear of them is a thing and if you happen to have your T on display and some idiot sees it and decides to take it upon themselves to kill it with no respect to you or your T, then that could be a problem. That happened to me at a house party I had at my place and some silly broad opened it up and killed my T just because of her irrational fear. I called the police on her and the judge made her pay but the loss of your pet is heartbreaking.

Tarantulas are kind of like having fancy plants. You love and take care of them so much, and they'll never know... It's kind of sad. The most complicated plants I can manage to care for are succulents (the easiest plants to manage) mostly because I have cats that destroy things I love, so a tarantula might be out of my league.

Pros: You can go on holiday for a while and just leave them alone. They don't need much space. It is always great and like a surprise to see a tarantula grow and mold. They are calm and don't make any disturbing sound. And of course: the beauty.
Con: That one needs to feed living insects, which means one needs to keep those as well. First I always felt very sorry for them and needed to get used to it. Crickets are stinky and can cost you sleepless nights when they escape and hide behind a shelf and make noise there.

JPs Pet Nation haha very true! I already have a list of 2-3 more already named and waiting for me to find them available. I’m glad I was able to rescue my first, it was very unplanned and impulsive... but I lucked out. A curly hair had been the first that made my thoughts go from “never” to “maybe” in regards to keeping a tarantula. I’ve kept scorpions and snakes my whole life, so I’m not totally inexperienced keeping “creepy” or “scary” pets that need a bit of extra caution, care and patience. I had planned on taking my time setting up an enclosure, starting up some feeder insect colonies, and waiting for an expo to come to my area... then Squish happened to need rescuing one day so.. Left the house for milk, came back with a spider. Mom wasn’t happy with my choices that day but I sure was haha

Okay Kat, I love your videos and you have become a great source of informative in a very short time. I started watching you when you had 14 tarantulas and have watched you grow so much as a keeper. Now, my thought about being tamed and bonding.... I agree they are not animals you can tame, but I see some amazing bonding with certain tarantulas. Maybe bonding isn't the right way to describe it, but with my 11 tarantulas, the ones we have been raising from very tiny slings seem to have a 'sense' of us. Our T. vegans gets very pissy with my partner, but she's perfectly mellow with me. She's quite a character and she's got that threat posture that could terrify anyone who is not familiar with demonstrative T's. My juvenile B hamorii, Adelaide, has been mine pretty exclusively since she was a very tiny sling. I swear I am not crazy. I can open her enclosure and she will actually walk over to my hand and walk on to it like she knows she's safe. I don't handle ours too much because, like you said, they are not social animals and do prefer to be left alone. Anyway, just my opinion. The most amazing bonding-like behavior I saw was with an OBT. She isn't typical. She lets her keeper handle her but the crazy thing was watching a video of her climbing onto her keepers hand and she sort of made her self comfortable and I was totally shocked! I saw this video in a Facebook group. Now of course I can't find it. Maybe it was all a dream. :) I do admit I believe in many things that are not scientifically proven.

"get the tarantula you really want" is great advice
My first two T's were an obt and a GBB
And I was warned against getting an old world as one of my first T's
But honestly that obt made me discover a passion for old worlds
And if I could go back, I wouldn't change a thing
Everyone told me it was a bad idea but that tarantula struck a passion
So my advice is get whatever T you want so long as you know what you're getting into
Like if you want a brightly colored T, starting with an old world is fine so long as you know what comes with keeping old worlds
I don't see it as a level of experience it's more of a level of knowledge
Someone could be in the hobby for ten years and still not feel ready for an old world
Or someone would be in the hobby for two months and feel fully ready for an old world
Just do your research and get whatever you want

I had previously kept cockroaches and was looking into mantis keeping when I stumbled on tarantulas. I have 2 now and am looking forward to the next expo in my area to add more! I watched so many videos and read so many things on arachnoboards before making a list of species I felt fit me and so far so good! My Aphonopelma chalcodes is a super chill sling and my Cyriocosmus elegans has closed of its burrow but I spotted little feets this afternoon so I'm waiting to see if it molts! Also thanks to all the videos I watched before getting them, I knew to try to not freak out when the burrow got closed off, horray!

@tarantula kat thanks so much for this video! I've been wanting to get a tarantula for a while now so I've been doing a bit of research. I can't decide which species to get, but I just wanted to ask you a question. You mentioned that burning scented candles or incense is bad if you have a t. I burn loads of incense all the time, is it really that bad for the t?

Spreadsheets! Tarantulas are a great reason to keep spreadsheets. Feeding, molting, maintenance, etc. So, depending on which type of nerd you are, put one in the appropriate pro/con column.

One thing that I would add is that with tranchulas you do have to have a lot of patience. Some species grow quickly and some grow very slowly. Like watching grass grow. So what can happen is you are impatient waiting for the T to get larger so you get a larger one and another one and another one oh and did I mention that one is just gorgeous and you have to have it? Oh but look at that one! And the next thing you know you have 30 tranchulas.

I don’t have a tarantula, but I have a huge brown recluse that I have grown quite fond of! Everybody that comes over, I tell them to leave the spider alone hanging out near my porch light! I love that spider, and would be very sad if someone killed it! I used to have a fly problem until that spider built its web by my porch light! The rain washes the web away every now and then, and I’ve seen that spider build the web back within a few hours! It’s amazing to see the work that spider produces! The web is huge! Spanning at least 4 feet long, and 3 feet wide! And it amazes me how quick that spider rebuilds after a rain storm! The first couple of rain storms made me sad, because I thought the spider was washed away! Night comes though and the web is back! My guess is my porch light is a good food source! I may be crazy for allowing a brown recluse to stay so close to my house, but the spider helps me, keep the insects away, and the ones that do come to the light, get trapped in the web! I was going to get a Venus fly trap, but Mother Nature brought that spider to me and solved my problem!

Thank you for this video. I'm a huge spider lover, when I lived in London back in the 1990s I had a tarantula, I only know what she was classed as "Mexican Blonde", she was beautiful, she was chocolate brown, with the most gorgeous pink hairs on her abdomen, she was very easy to handle (I mean if she ran up my arm or something she wasn't skittish), I left her in care with friends when I left the UK. Now here in Australia we are not able to get more "exotic" species, but we do have our own tarantulas ... there's not a lot of info on them, there's basically only exotic pet shops that sell them without a whole heap of information. I'd love to get one again, and as you've shown, very easy to maintain ... I know this is a huge ask, but are you able to find more about Aussie Tarantulas and give me a recommendation on what would be a great species to have as a pet. Cheers Dean.

Good video and very good information. It stays in one place 90% of the time, you can handle it but probably shouldn't, it won't get used to you or show any real affection toward you, it can inject you with venom and really the only cool thing about it is feeding time. Oh and you can also look at it because it's colorful. By my estimation that's not a pet, that's more of like having a fancy, walking paperweight that you can feed and look at and can possibly hurt you.
    Still, good info. Thanks.
