Mental Health & Tarantulas with Patricia from the Spinerette & Tarantula Heaven

- This week I have an in depth conversation with Patricia Colli from Tarantula Heaven and Creator and Editor of the Spinerette Magazine. She is also a therapist so we discuss a lot of ways tarantulas and the hobby can be therapeutic and how to handle feeling overwhelmed and avoid pitfalls sometimes present while keeping exotic pets.
This is a repost of the podcast originally recorded a few years ago. CZcams recently launched a podcast section on channel pages. Initially, it was not a good idea to post podcast videos on your main channel as it would hurt the analytics. So I created a 2nd channel called The Exotic Pet Collective where the video version of the podcasts were uploaded. I had also been made aware that many of you did not the podcast existed, so I have been systematically taking the podcast down from the 2nd channel and moving them over to this channel. That way, they can all be under the podcast tab on my channel page, and viewers that had never seen or heard them before would be notified of their existence. I apologize for any confusion.

I LOVED doing this podcast with you Richard! Thank you for having me on and for being such a gem to the tarantula hobby
As a Veteran with PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury, I have found that Tarantulas are a very therapeutic game changer to mental health, and I will continue to inspire others with this amazing therapeutic and extremely fun hobby. Keep up the great work Richard, so proud of you 🤗
I’m autistic and my reptile’s and tarantula are quite literally a life saver for me.
To be honest with everybody around the world I have a Mexican fireleg Tarantula and to be real honest I think in my own mind does she understands me when I talk to her and I think she can feel the vibrations of my voice and knows what I'm saying to her cuz whenever anybody else tries to give her water or crickets or anything she freaks out on them but when I do it she's completely calm sweet loving and patient
that sounds completely believable, theres a lot of things as a nation that we do not know, but I believe individuals find things out(if that makes sense, makes more sense in my head than typed out)
Im suffering from C-PTSD and other mental disorders... taking care of my ~50 tarantulas is one of not many moments when I feel completely free and healthy... No idea how is this working but... god I love that feeling. Awesome podcast Richard & Patricia.
We grow & become better,no shame, rather we be proud for moving with times
This segment has been quite educational. I applaud what you guys are doing for this hobby. Thank you. I definitely feel like I am taking away a whole new perspective with me here. I can relate on so many levels. ❤
babe wake up new tarantula podcast just dropped between my two favorite youtubers
I never quite understood the gatekeeping. Every single one of us was the beginner whose hands shook with anxiety the first time we rehoused a tarantula. Who had a panic attack When our first tarantula jumped for their food. Who overly worried when our tarantulas molted. Who forgot scientific terms and mixed up names. It's hard to remember that now when an old world runs up your arm and you don't even flinch after all these years but it's important that others become interested in this hobby. These animals need more people to care about them.
I think your point about collecting them when you have an addictive personality is important. I had six over a period of 25 years and I found mine to be very docile and friendly. I handled mine frequently and they never stressed out. I always gave them the choice of being held. I was never bit or threat posed or had hairs kicked at me. I looked at them as pets and get a lot of negativity from this. But I think it's up to the owner and you have to be able to read them and respect them. My two Mexican Red Knee Girls lived 20 and 25 years and they were very happy. No one believes me but it's true. I believe through my personal experience that they are capable of cognitive thinking and l saw it myself.
I just hope that many people watch your videos because you do have to great amount of information that can help all keepers stay updated on this hobby. 😊
Thank you thank you. I just knew it, keeping T's is a healing process and a opportunity to feel unique, useful and excitement, but overall a sense of achievement
I have major PTSD from childhood trauma and axiety to die for! Also im living in a country where majority culture mindset rule the world and when they dont appreciate your notion youre being ridiculed
So thanks for this chat, that to both Patricia and Richard, Im still watching stuff that was done 4 years back
I ended up really getting into this. Your content is great. Don't worry about dumb comments either. This is top tier 👌.
For me I dont have that many T's, between me and my son we have 8 T's and it really helps our bonding between parent and child, we learn together and discover and shop together and over the last 2 year I have grown in my person so much!
I am extremely scared of spiders… I allowed a Hause spider to live in my Hause for few weeks now, I named it!😂 and last weekend I got my first tarantula… I found myself looking at it for hours… it’s fascinating and I love to watch it. I really hope I don’t mess it up, I will be heartbroken. Sorry for the rant but I needed to let it out😅
Thank you so much for providing this video! And for helping us new folks feel good about not getting more Ts than we can handle. Im very happy having just one T (a Curly Hair as my first Tarantula) to have and care for and learn about. At least for now. Later, I want to have at least two more in my care. (A Pink toe and a Chilean Rosehair I want next) But Im extremely content pacing myself and taking my time. I also am legally diagnosed with Depression and Anxiety and my first T is helping me be much calmer. And I just love watching my Curly and taking good care of her. And even if she does love to burrow, I try to set things up for success so I can keep an eye on her. like, placing her curved cork bark cave against the clear wall of the enclosure, one end opening out to her water dish and all that and the other end against the clear wall so when she's in there I can monitor her anyway, to make sure all's well and if she goes into premolt I can make sure she doesn't do any death curls (I learned the big difference between Death Curls and Molting, thanks to your videos!). And she is a happy T with her cave burrow. It helps me stay focused and mindful of my T and not to stress her out. I really do enjoy having one in my life now. Fantastic little animals to care for and watch. :)
Awesome topic to discuss! Thank you! I’m a PTSD survivor and my tarantulas and scorpions help me a lot. ❤
Merry Christmas to you and everyone watching 🎄🎁🍀
Ive for sure been using tarantulas and other invertebrates as therapy. This was a good video to make me pause a bit and enjoy the collection I already have. Work on my husbandry for a while. I had an online shopping issue for a while and what i did for that was just start making wishlists and leave it then come back and see if I needed anything on there later and usually I would look at it and think "What was I thinking... I don't need that!" Lol. So maybe I can do something similar. Get that dopamine hit by wishlist shopping but not hit purchase 😂. And enjoy my pets I already have.
Love the video!
Great podcast 😊
Hello great video live stream podcast interview great information Richard
Merry Christmas
Love love love
Patricia's channel I watch all the time great video Richard
Nice video
Your mental health is as important as your physical health. If tarantulas help you in that way, then why not? Some people do martial arts or go to the gym (like myself) or work on cars, whatever works for you.
Just in the comments for the algorithm
I want to get into Ts I want a curly hair for my first but their is a lot of other Ts I want so I’m making a list and making quick basic facts about them 😅
watching my spiders is definitely soothing and they deffo have personalities and attitudes at times lol
the most exotic pets are only pets to takec are about and to observe. I had leopardgeckos, scorpions, a centipede and 6 tarantulas
Have Jon3800 and Robc guest in your podcast. The godfathers of Tarantula videos on youtube
My pokie and my caribena just died tiny slings dont know what i did wrong 😢
Iam so confused right now. I've got 70+ spiders and been keeping since my early 20's I'm now 49. I still somehow don't feel comfortable uploading a bunch of videos pertaining to spiders.
Mg up date knman ng TarantuLa,,,
