Keeping a healthy environment for my bearded dragon is what really inspired me to stop and consider what I was providing for my tarantulas. There is definitely more awareness and willingness to be more accommodating to our spiders, than there was when I began in the hobby 15 years ago. Yes, watching changes in behavior, has been eye opening and has made me take the time to consider opinions of others when the ideas seem radically, or even a little different from what I think. There’s always room to grow and become better caretakers of our animals. This was an outstanding episode! Thank you.

Legit question. Why are keepers so hard set against providing Ts what they would normally have in their native environment? Like I just got my first T which is a T. Vargas and first thing I did was mix up some coconut sub with sand and mosses etc. Fill up a 5 gal tank, decorate it and provide tons of hides etc and tossed a 50w basking lamp on a few inches above to maintain heat for one side of the tank (it doesnt stay on constantly its on a 2 hour timer on and off cycle) after drilling out extra vent holes on the tank and replacing the lid with a plexiglass lid and drilling holes in that.
Why would you and did you put less time into the T than your bearded? It literally makes no sense. I'm not coming at you at all btw just curious why the mindset is so widespread on only doing the bare minimum for Ts is?

I bought my enclosure from 8 Ball Exotics at an expo where I live and I brought this up to him. I asked how I can keep the heat for my P. Metallica and he told me to find the largest heat pad I could find and stick it to the back of the enclosure and now my T is thriving 2 years later! I’ve seen her thermoregulate by moving walls of the enclosure and I think that it really works for her having that heat gradient! I appreciate having experts like you guys helping everyone out with customized information for our situations!
Thank youuuuu!!! All of my tarantulas seek out heat. All of them. I've only kept since July of 2021. But that told me they wanted heat. I started with a heat mat on a thermostat placed at the back top of the enclosure. I've now am venturing towards a basking light. I've been bashed and told I'm stupid for providing heat for my animals. A thermostat is key!

I am also one that provides a "larger than recommend" enclosure for my Ts. And I am also a bioactive and semi bio(only springtails) keeper. They've done really well.
Also Richard, a heat rock can't be regulated. They're crap and known to cause burns on many animals. They should all get thrown away. Idk why they're being produced still. I'm sorry you lost your T to one

Very interesting! Please do more podcasts with Ryan :) I love the whole bioactive thing. I am just a few months into the tarantula hobby and I have questioned the "basic care" of tarantulas ever since. The things you read and see in FB groups 😨😵
I repurposed a fluval aquarium light to use for my spiders and it has a day/night schedule that you can customize. I have noticed changes in the behavior too. My C. fimbriatus likes to hang out in the top of one of their burrows in the evening now.
Such a great podcast one of the best I have listened too in a while took me this long from release because I got distracted. Great conversations and so many variables we could go on for hours. I love the idea of improving our husbandry and how we keep. I can backup Ryan because I have seen these basking like behavior's in pokies that I have setup in 12x12x18 bioactives with a bio dude grow light that also gives off a little heat. Love the content you make Richard and love and support Marshalls Arachnids. I have purchased tarantulas from Ryan and when you see the purple enclosures in person you will see they are no less if not better than tarantula cribs.
Been watching for a while, I have a few T's and recently was thinking of ways to "spice up" my enclosures, I build military model kits and decided to throw in one of my models into my stripe knee enclosure and it looks sick, just thought that might be a cool idea for you to change up to some giant T apocalypse type scenery. I can't thank you enough for this video, this has been such a huge eye opener for me in a lot of ways.
Not only being more open to the heat gradients and offering some warming LEDs which I actually love, I think it will make getting bioactive tanks an easier experience.
But also 3 hours ago I was 100% one of those people that was a little overwhelmed by differing husbandry advice. I decided you know what, I really trust Richard, what he says goes as far as I am concerned regardless of whatever other info I find. So honestly thank you for touching on why that isn't the best approach to take.

This is something I'm always advocating for; in other areas of the invert hobby, heating through lighting is not only common but a necessity for certain species. Blepharopsis mendica thrive at 35°C and will absolutely bask. When provided with the same temperatures they experience in their native environments, especially through heat lamps, I've seen incredible behavioural changes in both my own T's and friends T's. They become much more active.
This reminded me of fish keeping.
They also act spooked if the light goes on too quick or off too quick. I've been mimicing sunrise/set with room light before flicking lights on/off.
And the whole focus on numbers happens in the aquarium hobby too but it's ph and hardness. Experienced keepers will tell new ones to focus more on temperature and nitrates.
No wonder keeping spiders felt so comfortable to me. I don't have tarantulas yet but have jumpers and a widow but I keep their cages lit and watching them change their behaviors through the day is so cute. They have their little wake up and day routines.
After this though I'll definitely invest in a heat light instead of just a basic light for when I get my tarantulas. They way slings are kept in cups has always stressed me out. One of my jumpers is a sling and I just moved it to its afult cage and lil bro goes everywhere in its cage. A vial just sounds awful.
(also I just ignore humidity cause my room has a baseline of 60-70 because of the aquariums and gets 90+ when it rains out, I had to add a dehumidifier lmao. That plus keeping live plants with the spiders has made a big difference in keeping it up with minimal work)

This topic needs to be talked about, people still think they're tarantulas will die if they are offered a heat pad, and in my experience they thrive and do so much better. i've been experimenting with lights for a little bit now, and i've noticed that when i listen to the spider's environment's needs as well, they're calmer. good temp gradient, light cycle on the same timer as the reptiles as well as the shade dweller bulbs that have been used til they're ineffective for the reptiles and its been like adding more hiding opportunities. even the spiciest has mellowed. pairing that with relocating web when possible during rehouses? much more relaxed overall.
a higher upfront cost for habitat, but worth of more natural behaviors and less defensive spiders
As far as lighting goes - Fluval makes fish tank lights that are programmable via bluetooth and their app, where you CAN have them turn on and off on a scale, so they mimic nature by slowly lighting up and slowly dim down. They're absolutely amazing, but I absolutely do not understand why this same technology isn't available for reptile lighting and other heat lights. I know the Fluval lights are LED, so obviously they're not near warm enough for lizards that need heat - but the technology is teetering right on the ability to do this. One of these companies really needs to step it up and make this game change happen. I would love to have the same ability to slowly wake up my bearded dragon, or put my gecko to sleep, but right now it feels like I'm causing them some shock to not have that available for them.
Will the fluval lights work fine for Ts heat wise? I'm currently using a low Watt basking light that doesn't put out massive amounts of heat on a 5 gal tank for my T but I can't replicate the dawn dusk cycles like I like however she is next to a window so does get that gradient just not the slow warmth that comes with.
I think it's because fish NEED to live in healthy established ecosystems or they'll die while other animals can take more abuse. I do see the husbandry had been getting better for reptiles and inverts but fish definitely have had a headstart for proper husbandry. Fish even have some lights that mimic storms.

First hello from Wales in the uk.
Ooo the dusk period! I've been doing this too and I've noticed some mild last minute basking as I dim the lights over a 2 hour period. I have also intuitively been creating a fresh air circulation based on what I've learned about the book lungs functionality by using a fan indirectly (not pointing at the enclosures) blowing air Through (not around) the room they are in.
I noticed what you said about stratification within the enclosures and I too think it's definitely rewarding as I've seen some of my Ts out and about so much more than what common research would suggest they ought to be based on their species. In a nut shell I've best replicated the environment they would come from.
What I'm interested in trying next to maximise this is what you guys mentioned about seasonal changes.

I got my first T from Marshall Arachnids! A baby C. Elegans and she is doing splendidly. I did a lot of research and watched so many videos before I made my choice. Huge thanks to Ryan for his advice on a basking light for my inverts. I have 3 T slings and 2 jumpers now that are way more comfortable than they used to be.

As a reptile keeper who got his first T, a GBB it's easier for me to understand what Ryan is talking about. Reptile keepers always (should) are dialing in heat and humidity levels. We understand how heat lights work and how they affect humidity levels as the moisture evaporates from the substrate. Even before watching this podcast I started applying some of my knowledge of reptile keeping towards my T. Thank you Ryan and keep up the good work.
I started with a chilli rose an amazing well behaved T I love her still too this day sadly she past but I had her for 9 yrs,took a brake from Ts for abit but I’m now gone balls deep lol got 2 Mexican white knees,Goliath bird eater n a kyan kraken,all ov these I’m not sure of the sex coz they are a mix in sizes n yet to confirm the sex’s,I’m obviously hoping there all female but the chances are very slim,I also have two beautiful royals,I’m obsessed with doing research before even buying an animal and n deem it completely necessary before making that purchase no matter what,I have always wanted a emperor scorpion n I’m gonna get one,but long winded but this was great pod cast n your videos have massively helped me with my husbandry of my beautiful creatures,all I want is the best for my pets
Also if you’re keeping the spider to look at or breed there’s going to be different requirements the T will need. Basically learn everything you can talk to other breeders etc etc.
So, I don't want to create a full bioactive for my Ts but I would like to just do a false bottom for humidity. Would that work or just asking for mildew n stuff?

Ryan, what might a setup look like for a set of slings? The enclosures are so small that it doesnt seem like they’ll be too much gradient opportunities. Would you just manually move the light up or down to manage the temperature?
You could just try heating the area around the small enclosures. I use a bakers rack. All of my slings are in the top rack and I have a set of 40w heat emitters on a temp controlled thermostat beaming down heat around the whole rack/shelf.
Now that I know that academic institutions & journal publications created a system that actually incentivizes researchers to falsify their data & avoid checking each others’ work through repeated studies (& that that is exactly what has been happening for years), I don’t consider a degree in something to be worth all that much (other than a ticket to get into certain spaces/tax brackets).
Yes, a degree certifies that you put in a lot of hard work to receive a lot of information & training (which is impressive), & it gives you access to a lot more resources, but you don’t need a formal education to become an expert in something.
That’s only required if you want to become a *certified* expert, & it’s up to you whether that official stamp of approval is something you might need for what you want to accomplish.
So, how do you set up an arid bioactive? I want to put my GBB in one but my bioactives are highly humid...

Can anyone name a few plants that would be great for a 12x12x18 with an Avicularia Avicularia. I want to go bioactive
I let them have outside day/night temps in summer and just put up with it. I'll close up windows if I know it will hit over 90 or under 70 or something, otherwise I just let it be and it seems just fine. Certainly a lot of molts and sacs. Winter is trickier but it still often gets over 80 in here with all the electronics, and bottoms out at the set temp of the thermostat at night. Since I am doing some breeding, it would definitely be counter-productive to spend money on AC.
Please! More information about the habitats these animals create their homes in! Tried asking online for sources regarding Bonnetina minax and the only response I got was to, "Keep it like any other Mexican species." First of all, that isn't what I asked. Second, that isn't helpful at all!

I dont understand how the concept of an animal benefiting from its specific parameters it has evolved to grow and live is so far fetched. Richard usually impresses the hell out of me with his interviews. But his resilience is evident even with all the " agreeableness" he expressed. Its literally science-based factual information that is only disregarded because they're resilient, under studied and because they're "bugs." The whole take away imo is they need reasonable options within the spectrum of their natural habitat.
I'd love to hear an edited, cut down version of this if you ever have the time to do an edit. I watched/listened for a while, but never got to the husbandry, and given that this is over two hours, I assume there's a Lot of just chatting in it. I don't really care to listen to two hours of that, but I'd love to hear/see the parts about tarantulas.
As for the video description, it's not that the bare minimum basic husbandry is no longer sufficient - It has Never been sufficient. Just because the life you're taking care of doesn't end(spider, etc, doesn't die) doesn't mean you aren't keeping it in poor conditions. The shitbags who argue otherwise are the reason I never go on tarantual forums, etc. There's no changing their minds, and it's just depressing to read, so best to avoid it when needed.
