The Games That Left An Impact
Sometimes when you’re playing a game for the first time you don’t realise just how special it is. You don’t realise the impact it’s going to leave on you until it happens. It’s not just the idea of wanting to replay a game for the first time to experience all the same feelings. It’s about how that game will forever sit in a special place for you. It could be because you loved playing it when you were a kid or a game you played as an adult and the themes make you connect on an emotional level. These games are the games that left an impact on you, on me, and for some games, it left an impact on the industry and communities that loved these titles. So today I’m going to be discussing the games that left an impact on me and my experience of gaming over the last 21 years of my life but more importantly, understanding why they left these feelings and what I believe is truly important in gaming but most importantly it’s about reminiscing on the amazing games I’ve loved. So sit back and grab a cup of tea as we discuss the games that left an impact.

Why do FPS Games Suck Now?
zhlédnutí 16KPřed 21 dnem
I’ve been playing multiplayer FPS games for longer than I haven’t. I started with Halo 2 and with games like Halo 3 and black ops 2. I love playing those games with Halo 3 giving me any chance of decent aim over the years and then with Black Ops 2 being the first and only call of duty that I got to prestige master. I slowly got into more games like Battlefield, Future Cod games, and CSGO. CS be...

From the game itself being fun to play, the core gameplay loop being addictive and enjoyable through to the goofy tone and community-driven feeling. That...

Exclusivity in Gaming. When you hear that you probably think about games like The Last of Us, Pokemon, Halo, and way more. Nowadays with social media it's kinda hard not to have any expectation for a game. For example I was not interested in Elden Ring but its success made me try it. The problem is that after hearing times and times again that Elden Ring was the greatest thing Humanity has ever produced, I was expecting to at least enjoy it. I did not and started to think there was something wrong with me, that made the experience even more frustrating.

    In the first hour of the video you make mention of the view that you take in coming in the proper entrance of Braithwaite manor. This place is almost certainly modeled after a place called Oak Alley Plantation which is a short drive outside of New Orleans, Louisiana, which is where Saint Denis is modeled after. The first time I ever visited New Orleans, it was very obvious to me how good of a job that the Rockstar team did recreating the city. IRL there are many places in the city where the architecture is still old and looks visually familiar to how it is in the game. Some of the buildings in the game are 1 to 1 recreations of landmark buildings in the city. Google Oak Alley Plantation, the lead up the main drive with the trees on both sides, the main design of the home are identical. It really gives you an appreciation for the level of work that Rockstar did with this game.

    I don't really agree with the FPS comment at the end, everyone's limits to a games technical performance are subjective. Lower frame counts feel too jarring for me personally. Of course that is no reason to shit on the game, but I definitely believe it is a valid reason to not want to experience it. Thankfully it's not much of an issue nowadays, but im unsure of how the console performance has worked in the last two generations. I feel the same way with FOV in games where it is restricted, sometimes it makes me feel motion sick/uneasy. The game might be great but I just can't get into it.

      I don't care if people mainly want to play games that are 60fps but it's the fact so many people write off games because they are 30 then it's dumb. games have been good for decades that are 30.

    Bioware games from around the 2010s were next level immersion for me, Mass Effect and Dragon Age: Origins transported me into space/fantasy world with interesting worlds, companions that I would choose build relationships with them. Worlds/planets that all had their own problem and they were bleak and every decision you didn't feel black or white. It was all about perspective and how you would handle the decisions. They were really ahead of their time back then!!!

    I think microtransactions have a place in gaming, but that place is definitely not every single AAA game. I can forgive an indie or AA company who doesn't have a corporation or investors behind them

    • @Exiled7
      @Exiled7 Před 2 dny

      I would say that's not really a valid reason. I agree that smaller games and studios will need them to help stay afloat but the point of all of them, maybe not some indies is to make money. Also if a company has Investors that doesn't mean the company is going to just try to break even or make a small profit on that investment, the whole point of having investment is that the person investing is expecting larger returns than just putting there money into something like the S&P or a HY savings.

    • @brodieorr5393

      @@Exiled7 and this leads back to the over inflation of the AAA industry. It's unsustainable, so they're passing the excess cost onto the players, and when it doesn't work out, the team gets heavily cut or closed down entirely Margins are getting smaller and smaller despite gamers paying more on average for their games, through the price hike and microtransactions, even subscriptions sometimes. Clearly something has got to give

    Most open-world games prioritize size over quality, I'm tired of open-world games with the same quest type repeated infinitely, fetch quests or kill a number of enemies isn't interesting. I wanna be lost in a world and discover interesting characters or items on my own, without the devs pointing me to them, I would rather have less content that is meaningful than a lot of copy paste content

  • @MacCormaic

    I agree - but also disagree. Now the following statement is from someone who's favorite game is Rogue, followed by Black Flag. I love Origins' story, and Bayek as a character. However, I cannot stand the combat. Stealth is quite good, but my God, the combat is horrendous. I hate RPG, "attack, attack, dodge, repeat" combat. I also think it's goofy to hit an enemy forty or fifty times and they're still attacking me. My real issue with Odyssey. It did what Origins did but butchered it mercilessly. The game has the WORST acting in the franchise. Kassandra is a boring and corny protagonist, and Alexios is just slightly more tolerable. The combat is practically the same, but stealth was taken to a whole new level where only completely trash players enjoy it. There is almost no reason to ever play stealth and there were no real stealth gadgets. The story is probably one of the weakest stories the series. Valhalla, well, mostly the same complaints, however, it's not quite as bad, except it's too long.

    The reason open world games are boring are for the same reason you never want to smoke again after your dad catches you and makes you smoke the entire pack until you puke. It's like that story in Exodus when God sends a flock of pigeons to feed the Jews for turning their noses up at the mana. We're being given meat until it comes out our noses. It goes too far. It winds up being too much for anyone to handle. It distracts from the main plot, and makes you forget what you came here to do. I've always thought I wanted that, only to realize how much I hate it, in the end. Games should provide just enough side content to make the player feel that sense of agency, but should eventually force the player back on track in order to progress any further. One of the better games at this was the Metro series. In that game, the main plot is the journey, and not the destination. The plot is what keeps you moving from place to place, but then lets you explore just enough to learn about what this world is about, and what you're actually fighting for. Or, to help you understand the evil you're supposed to be fighting against. It does try to carry a message, but avoids forcing it onto the player. You're allowed to be good, or less than good. In the end, you learn more about yourself, and why this game is a bit prophetic. In fact, it could seriously make you rethink your life. That's quite an accomplishment. On the other hand, I've never even come close to finishing an Elder Scrolls game, because I always get so side-tracked that I completely forget the main plot. Usually, their main plot sucks, anyways. Oh, not another messianic save the world superhero quest. Puh-lease! That has been done to death, already. It's too unrealistic, and overly idealized. I simply can't relate or find myself empathizing with the situation or characters. At some point, I become so powerful and bored that I start to want to become evil, and just kill everybody. A game should never make you feel bored and want to turn on the people you're supposed to save. That's quite a failure on the part of the writers and game designers. Another problem is the fact that the world just becomes a walking sim if you're allowed to go literally anywhere. The plot should be about the journey. It should get you from place to place, but then also motivate you to continue on. The side content should merely add to the story, and deepen your connection to the world. When the world becomes the game, it's gone too far. You're going to get bored quick, because everything will just become a chore. This holds true in the real world. The best experiences are the ones which take you places, and allow you enough freedom to not only take in the sights, but to meet the locals and form relationships with the people and sample their culture. However, at some point you have to get back on the boat, and get to the next stop. It should feel like a tour, and not a destination. For anybody who has been on a really long vacation to only one place, they often complain that they got bored after the first week, and regret spending two weeks. On the other hand, when those weeks are spent on a tour, and they are going from place to place it never gets boring, and they always feel like they wish they could've stayed longer. Game designers need to build their games with this in mind. It's the same reason why Las Vegas is popular, and Reno sucks. Las Vegas is like a river cruise with an asphault river. You can sail up and down the strip, island hopping the different casinos. And, that journey is often more exciting than any of those destinations. It's the reason island hopping cruises, and river boat tours are more fun than a long stay at a resort. People enjoy a jouney more than a destination. It's the same reason why the best urbex channels on CZcams are the ones which focus more on the journey than the destination. At the end of the day, the stay gets stale quickly. So, a game should feel more like island hopping, and less like trying to take advantage of everything a massive resort has to offer. You should walk away with unanswered questions, a sense of incompleteness, and a burning hunger for more. It should force you onwards before you're entirely ready. There need to be restrictions, and limitations. There needs to be a time limit, and something forcing you back on schedule, like a cruise ship that is going to depart with or without you. There should be consequences for doddling too long. The best way to accomplish this, is to make the companions you're with get upset and threaten to leave you. Just like in real life, if you refuse to leave the casino when your friends are ready to go, you just might get left behind and find yourself stranded. Open world games should permit you to fail the main quest if you don't complete what needs to be done in the allotted time. Evil takes over, and the world takes a dive for the worse. People turn hostile and refuse to sell to you. Everybody now hates you. Your friends won't respond to your texts. Life in that world is no longer pleasant. That can be enough to motivate you to get on with things. Personally, I avoid games which boast about their open world. I know that's going to turn into a grind after a week or two, and I'll never finish it. If I can get it cheap, and just enjoy adventuring around without the expectation of beating it, then I might pick it up. Otherwise, I'm going to prefer games which don't force me to smoke the entire pack all at once. I want the tour; not the lifestyle. It should feel like a vacation; not a career. That way I can peel myself away to play your other games, too. That means more money for you. It's a win win. Get a clue.

    Gaming addiction is a problem because developers highjack the human psyche. Games are not bad in themselves, but developers who abuse human psychology to encourage addiction to their games are the problem.

    • @Exiled7
      @Exiled7 Před 4 dny

      kinda agree. I think they abuse these issues but also a lot of people get addicted to games that don’t have over the top mechanics for addictive nature. I think a level of any addiction is the person themselves as it’s proven across the board that certain types of people are far more likely to become addicted to something than others.

    • @TyLovePie
      @TyLovePie Před 4 dny

      @Exiled7 I agree. A person who is predisposed to addiction is more likely to be addicted to gaming. However, gaming is unique when it comes to addiction. The addiction can be more destructive if the developers are preying on addictive personalities. Games can be designed to exploit the psyche of addictive personalities to encourage micro transactions or to take up all of your time, keeping you in the game world. There is a distinction to be made here between abusing addicted gamers and actually providing something a gamer can connect with. I believe if you are providing the latter, you might be feeding into an addiction. However, it may also be providing exactly what that person needs through possibly the only medium they are able to accept it. Gaming can be an addiction but it can be a less destructive outlet for people with addictive personalities IF developers do not abuse them.

    • @Exiled7
      @Exiled7 Před 4 dny

      Yeah I agree with that last point. I do think in gaming we see a lot of people that are in my opinion addicted as in they are using games for such an amount of time that it's blatently over use and taking away from other aspects of there lives. For example it's common in gaming to play for 6 hours a day (by common I mean more internet side of things as the moment you speak to someone IRL they'll normally only play for a maximum of 10-15 hours a week) which I believe even if it's on paper not taking away from other aspects of life I would believe it is taking away from your ability to do more with your life and finding faulse sense of achievement and satisfaction through a digital format.

    I seem to be very unlucky when it comes to my taste in games. I hear so much good stuff about RDR2, but I'm just not really into "cowboy stuff", especially not cowboy stuff in a swamp. If the game would at least take place in the Wild West, the Arizona desert or California, I would be more drawn to it. It isn't just that though. It seems there is something that keeps me from wanting to try every unanimously praised great game in recent years. I would love to play a huge, well made fantasy RPG and I hear everyone swoon over Baldur's Gate 3, but I just hate party based RPGs. I don't want to be some swarm intelligence hovering over a group of characters. What I want from an RPG is to immerse myself into a single character, be that character and then use this character's strengths and weaknesses to interact with the game world. Using a whole group of characters like tools in a tool box breaks immersion and totally ruins what a RPG is all about to me. I want a real ROLE PLAYING GAME when I play a RPG, not a RTS disguised as a RPG. It seems people think those two genres mix well together, like peanut butter and chocolate or something, but to me they don't because each genre's key attributes dilute and ruin the other one's. I also didn't like it the other way around back in the day, when I first played Warcraft 3. I wanted to play a RTS and the RPG elements they mixed in there (with all that focus on hero characters and rushing around the map to get them upgraded) just annoyed me and diminished the RTS gameplay I was looking for.

    • @Exiled7
      @Exiled7 Před 4 dny

      not really a hot take. The only reason the alternate start mod exists is to fight one of two things, the first is if you have some mods it screws up the opening of the game. The second is that people have played the game so many times that they just want something different. My praise for the opening doesn't really matter in regards to the actual opening of what is happening, the point about praising the opening is the way they go about taking you through the small area that feels inclosed then opening you up to a massive area, this can be achieved through the alternate start mod as well.

    I’m prolly older than many of you so I’d like to mention some of the classic Sid Meier titles like Civ and Pirates.. Also, while I was a casual rpg fan previously playing Suikoden for the first time somewhere around a decade ago made me more hardcore.. I then found my current favorite series Trails.. However playing so many hours of it kinda burnt me out a bit so I’m now deviating a bit dabbling in many different genres & devs.. Most recently the two fairly recent VanillaWare titles in 13 Sentinels & Unicorn Overlord

But I can confirm that I've been working on this video for over a month now so I had zero clue about the guys video! I can definetly see how you might think that though. Edit - Just to add though I've just checked breifly over his video and outside of assassin's creed two we talk about different games and I've not seen the video so I don't know what angle he took his video. 2nd Edit - I also have a patreon post from 14th of March talking about my future content and this video was mentioned as a "coming out in 9 weeks from now" which I don't know if that's exactly the same time span but yeah. Just letting you know that two people can have the same idea.

    The main problem with multiplayer gaming these days is its become a second job. People have lives outside of video games. People have jobs, IRL friends, families to take care of. Focusing on grinding some video game takes so much out of your life these days. Devs intentionally make timegated tedious grinds in order to encourge people to pay microtransactions to progress faster. Multiplayer games like deep rock galactic where you just simply join and chill with friends are a rare site now. And imo pay to progress faster is paying to win since you do get a time advantage over other players. In terms of competitive games content creators populating the META is what ruined those which cause many communities to become hostile towards new players.

    I love walking around doing nothing in RDR2, but seemingly find it difficult and boring when I'm actually out and about. I love how Alan Wake 2 can turn an uncomfortable feeling of anxiety into a "bring it on, motherfuckers". I love how games like The Witcher 3 or Telltale's The Walking Dead makes me relish the significance of choice and initiative, whilst in real life I'm afraid of doing so. When things don't go my way in Elden Ring, I don't get pissed off, I just know I need to learn more, that I haven't figured it out yet. I hate guitar practice, but improving my Pokémon makes me wanna keep improving them. In real life, I find myself being insecure and judgmental, but in games I'm able to appreciate and understand the nuances of people and their lives. To me, the games we enjoy the most reflects certain aspects of ourselves. Art is a tool for growth and self-realization. It can teach us something about ourselves and the world around us. It has this incredible way of expressing the beauty of our existence, and the importance of our experiences. It seems to be able to talk us in ways only our hearts can understand. If a game draws me in, it means I have lessons to learn.

  • @silvereye626
    @silvereye626 Před 6 dny

    I agree, expecting all games to be 60 FPS is absurd! There's no excuse for it being that sluggish, that's the lowest common denominator that LCD screens dragged us down to. Aiming for a mere 60 Hz means that the slightest performance hitch will drop the framerate, to well below what the cheapest monitor can display. A responsible developer would aim to get at least 90 FPS on the minimum hardware specifications, at minimum graphics settings. That way there's room to absorb any unforeseen slowdowns, without cutting into the displayed framerate on entry-level hardware. Now, if you want to crank up the graphics beyond the lowest settings, you'd need better hardware to maintain the baseline minimum FPS. That's fine, it's to be expected: if you have more GPU capacity, you can turn on antialiasing without dropping below 120 FPS. But no matter what, there's no excuse for having only 60 FPS at native resolution and minimum settings. That would be the mark of a shoddy game, and anything approaching 30 Hz is unplayable.

    • @Exiled7
      @Exiled7 Před 6 dny

      didn’t say accepting all games. I said stop complaining about it when that isn’t what makes a game good or bad. 60 should be the standard for shooters no doubt. But considering still the majority of games releasing are 30fps means the standard is still 30 as they struggle to optimise for everything
