  • I don’t play games often anymore. You might relate to this idea of finding most games you play boring and nothing more than a waste of time. You know you have goals you want to hit and you have nothing catching your eye in your down time. Which might lead you to quitting altogether or having an overall pessimistic view of games.

I've been gaming for 40 years now and with a house full of kids and pets gaming time is extremely precious. I start dozens of games and if they don't spark joy within the first hour I just move on to the next. I don't feel this as wasted time, because I tried something new and can move on.

@tgtgamer101 I started with a Pong Clone, then Atari 2600 in the early '80s, C64 was my main machine until Amiga 500 and SNES. I am as much a gamer as technology enthusiast. So I'm always interested in what's next, how is it going to look? And yes, I think we are reaching a plateau in visuals and I am more then ever interested in how the future of gaming will look like, given everything can look life-like.

Gaming became a lot more fun for me when I stopped playing multiplayer games. It feels a lot better IMO when I actually reach an ending while playing and can start on a new game once in a while, instead of doing the same shit for 500 hours.

It feels like a chore because you treat it like a chore... You probably have a backlog of AAA games that arent good but are AAA so you feel you need and "want" to play them... Have one game you play but other than that just have an idea of the next game. Be sure to keep it as just an idea so you dont feel preasure to compleate the game you are currently playing faster. Take it chill. Play here and there and not the whole day, maybe not even every day and you will see yourself thingking about the game and wanting to play it like you did when you were younger, but this only works if you play actually good games. I'd reccomend interesting games rather than "Open world, do whatever you want" ones or play the linear story ones...
I'd recommend to try veriety of games like Outer Wilds, A short hike, Subnautica, Frostpunk, Obra dinn etc

I am a wild fire fighter and I definitely got super addicted to games this last off season. Since I had money I didn't work for like 4 months and played video games 6-10hrs per day, I gained a ton of weight and spent all my money on drugs and food and bills instead of saving it. About 2 months ago I had to get a job and start to lose weight and train for the fire season, so the crazy gaming had to stop. I feel since then I have had a much healthier relationship with gaming, even though I still play 1-2 hours every day and I've spent a Saturday or 2 when I only play games for 8 hrs. But I do feel overall happier and I've picked up guitar again as well as got back into a d&d group, and if anyone cares I've lost 21 lbs to get back in shape.

I have also had the issue of games getting stale and un-enjoyable to play. I would recommend to first make sure you aren't ignoring your normal life, since no game can fix the feeling of dread from putting off a task for too long. Then, my advice to anyone still not finding games fun, but who still wish to keep the hobby, is to temporarily stop playing your common rotation of games, and start trying new genres/types of games. Indie games tend to always feel the freshest because they aren't afraid to innovate and stray from the AAA formula, and also tend to respect your time more. Older games can also accomplish those same things. Some games that helped me enjoy games again were: Portal 1 & 2, Dishonored 1 & 2, Disco Elysium, Dusk, Ultrakill, Doom 2016 & Eternal, Papers Please, Shovel Knight, The Messenger, The Max Payne Trilogy, Arkham City, Devil May Cry 5, and many more!

There is a time in a man's life when video games were a point of escape, allowing him to become a hero in an imaginary world. There comes a time a man must face the real world to be a hero as real responsibilities emerge.
Video games then become one of those therapeutic tools, not a life breather.
I am with you on this. I currently play fewer games and find playing with my wife much more fun. It becomes our bonding pattern, like watching a movie.

I absolutely think gaming addiction is a thing. Something that can be observed quite clearly in the gaming community at large. However, I think there is a fine line between a passionate hobby and an addiction.
I have like 1 friend whom I speak to 1-3 times/ 2 weeks. I have my gf and to me that is enough. We go on a "date" about once per week. I work Monday - thursday and then I am off for the week. During that time I like to play games. Very rarely is it only 1 game. It is usually around 3 different ones, whom all give me a different kind of enjoyment. Part from that I listen to music, watch films/series with my gf and listen to music. My diet has recently gotten v on point, however I would like to start jogging again. That is a mental hill I need to climb. My sleep schedule has been, the past 6 months, amazing. Ever since I quit weed, It helped me improve all those things.
I do have evenings from time to time where I don't even touch my pc. Mainly because I am busy visiting my parents or because I've been on my weekly date and it is just too late to actively engage in.
I never began social media to begin with. I don't see this being any different really compared to botanical interests or drawing etc. What matters is that you enjoy what you're doing, and not simply doing it for the sake of the routine.

The biggest problem with gaming for me is the daily, weekly, and monthly challenges.
I spend so much of my time doing things i don't really want to do in games, that i don't have enough time to have fun while playing games.
    Example:
I'm a car guy, and i love racing, collecting, and trying new cars in racing games, but in Forza Horizon 5, new cars are released almost every week, and are locked behind weekly challenges.
You either do the challenges or you don't get the cars, every week.
As a result i'm not doing something i like when i play FH5, and i waste a lot of time i could have used in other games.
There have been times when i've been juggling 3-4 games at a time, only playing weekly challenges, without wanting to do any of it, while i have several years backlog of other games i want to try.

I do think especially if you been gaming for years or grew up from the late 90ties or early 2000 you have played a lot of games and then you try switching genres and at first its exciting but you quickly see the same shit repeat itself in the genre you left but with different mechanics and it builds up even more. I am going to admit I have an addiction and spend an unhealthy amount of time on them and feels wasted ,but I will be taking steps to correct that. For people who don't feel this way and able to have balance but still find games boring or repetitive I would advise you to drop them for a few months I did that a few years because I was on a work and travel program and 4 months later with no games makes you appreciate games that you found boring are exciting now. A lot of good points here. I agree that gaming addiction is real. If you don’t have anything of value outside of gaming then it can feel wrong to stop playing for a while.
I had to stop playing for a month because 1 my controller had gotten stick drift and it was annoying having to play games like that so I just quit. 2 I had gotten really into a tv show (Gotham) it was leaving Netflix and I wanted to watch it all before it left so I did that all last September.
When I got back into gaming it was surreal how good it felt to play. That’s essentially how anything that gives us pleasure works. There needs to be a balance. It’s not just gaming: food, chess, reading, anything can become an unhealthy obsession.
It’s good to have a multitude of hobbies and things to do to keep us busy.
Now I try to only play games if I’m enjoying it. If I’m not feeling it then I just do something else. I do this with shows and movies as well.

You expressed your thoughts clearly: your dilemmas about what constitutes a fruitful or valid use of your time, that nagging sensation of, “guilt,” (perhaps?) that almost every gamer must feel from time to time, when you think you could be doing something more constructive with your time, and your questioning of the value and, “values,” of gaming.
It is more than legitimate to say gaming is, “time wasting,” when you know you are doing it instead of doing things you should be doing, especially if that includes meeting your responsibilities. And it’s only worse if you’re gaming as a way of avoiding those responsibilities. I have ADD and it has taken me years to come up with a way of managing such impulses.
So, it’s right to take a break from gaming occasionally to evaluate how, and it what ways, you feel differently when you don’t play; both the good and the bad.
My rule of thumb is to be honest with myself about any sensations of guilt and never to ignore them. I don’t play, “instead,” of meeting responsibilities or simply doing chores. More importantly, I manage my time. I make sure there is time set aside for the pursuit of other goals and time set aside for gaming.
Yet, I would add that there is another aspect to gaming which didn’t come up so strongly in this video, and I would ask whether it matters much to you? That is the, “art,” of games, or games as an expression of art? I see the art form (and the many art forms represented within the medium) as being of paramount importance when it comes to my enjoyment of a game.
I should clarify that I like to play alone, without the pressure of other gamers relying upon me for support for in-game objectives, or their wider social contact. I don’t like most of the, “social,” aspects of gaming, for the very reasons you pointed to in your essay: because they want your wallet.
When I consider Elden Ring, Senua’s Sacrifice, A Plague Tale, the GTA series, The Last Of Us, The Witcher series and my personal favourite, Red Dead Redemption (both 1 & 2) I see epic stories, told with heart, imagination, creativity, style and enthralling beauty. To be let loose in these worlds, to act as a free agent, wondering into adventures, unexpected stories, meeting weird and unpredictable characters, in vast games where you really can just set your own goals for the day and make your own adventures, I feel no guilt or shame at being in those worlds for a day. It takes a whole day just to appreciate some of these worlds and to get the most out of the experience. The only question is, have I made the time for it and done so without neglecting my wife or my (now adult) children?
I think I have struck the right balance, ultimately. I work freelance, able to set my own schedules and meet deadlines to hand in written pieces; I look after my loved ones and get to play with them before I go off to be alone with my imaginary friends and enemies in the game worlds before me.
But I think it comes down to the, “value,” we place on games as an art form? Though I avoid the paywalls, coop, loot box and, “social gaming,” experiences, and see such things as NFT’s in gaming as being a genuine threat to the whole landscape, I can also see how people who play in shared open worlds, must feel the pressure of the sales pitch constantly, which undermines all that is noble about the art-form and marks a gulf between the creators of the games and the managers who are always besmirching their achievements by adding yet another catch or trick to get inside your wallet. I can’t imagine being able to appreciate the wonders of Red Dead whilst trying to meet daily targets, or feeling like you have to complete chores for the company, just to get an item of clothing, new weapon, or something that everyone else is striving for? That doesn’t sound like fun, art, or anything worthwhile, let alone, “noble.” That sounds like pressure, stress and, “work,” to me.
So, my advice (if I were to offer any to a guy who doesn’t sound like he really needs any?) would be to steer clear of multiplayer games, pay to play games, loot box games, and just any game that wants to make more money out of you. In many cases that will mean missing out on whole swathes of potential fun, so it’s very much about personal choice. But what works for me is just the game. I knew before RDR2 came out that the multiplayer element would be a big deal for the game, but I also knew that what I was buying was just the part of the game that appeals to me: the story. And that makes a huge difference to my stress levels, as I don’t see anxiety over meeting goals, or being sworn at by a bunch of racist teenagers in Call Of Duty lobby, as my idea of a, “good time.”
I enjoyed hearing about your experience and would certainly like very much to hear more about how this all shakes out for you. So yes, that follow up video would be most welcomed. But, I would also love to know, if you could set aside the commercialisation and cynicism of the marketing of games, how do you feel about gaming as an art form? Do you ever play to, “relax,” rather than to answer a compulsion? Do you ever make Arthur Morgan a coffee and just stare out over the vistas whilst smelling that brew? I hope gaming doesn’t lose you? We need more people like you in gaming and certainly on CZcams, discussing your experience.
Sorry for going on so long, but gaming is a big deal for me, and I’ve been through similar experiences. So, if you’ve read this far, thank you for your patience. ✌️

I felt like this. Then, one day I played Tinykins on Gamepass…and loved it! I couldn’t stop till I’d completed it 100%, something I’d not done for ages. It was just plain simple fun, designed by people who wanted to make a game rather than a product. Franchises like Assassins Creed, FarCry, Need for Speed etc are to the games industry what the MCU is to the film industry. Great to look at, totally unoriginal and the same thing over and over again. My free time is precious. I don’t want to be sucked into a boring bloat fest just like last years boring bloat fest.

I am licensed therapist and I by no means claim to be an expert in addiction though I have worked with individuals struggling with addiction. I can say that behaviors of addiction can apply to pretty much anything though labeling something as an “addiction” can be tricky. The way someone is addicted to substances isn’t the same way someone is addicted to videogames or sex or eating etc. What I think is important is that if anything is becoming such a central feature of your life that it is having negative impacts on other areas of life and you are struggling to stop, then it’s worth exploring no matter what you label it. Great video also! I’ll be curious to hear your thoughts on the matter from your own experience.

Now that I have a full time job (even on saturday mornings) and college at night, I don't have a lot of time to play. Only time I have to do it is on the weekend but even then I was getting bored quickly after picking up a game to play or stop playing I a game didn't run on 60FPS. But then I got a Nintendo Switch. That thing made enjoy gaming again. I can play on the bus on my way to college, it made appreciate indie games that before I never thought of playing and I'm having a blast now. I used to care about MSI Afterburner showing me my FPS when playing on my laptop or if I had FPS drops on my Series S, but now I just game and focus on the game itself and I'm having fun like I used to on the old days.

The problem with gaming is that most of the games are designed to hook players to spend more time and money on it, rather than doing anything meaningful.
This problem appears in every other forms of entertainment as well, in much less capacity. I never stay up late for shows and movies and books even though I like them no less than video games.
Furthermore, I can workout watching video or listening audio contents. It's hard to multitask playing video games.
I don't want to quit gaming for good, there's still some games worth playing and don't hook you as much.

My PS4 back-catalog is still full of great games. I just don’t have the time or energy. I have my go-to games that I play for 3 or 4 hours after work. But the last time I was actually able to dedicate time to a new game was when I had Covid and wasn’t allowed to work for 10 days. Starting a new game is the hardest part for me simply because I don’t have the time.
If a game could hook me in early on I’d definitely get deeper into it, but that hasn’t happened since Witcher 3. So I start a new game, create my character, get through the intro, and end up thinking “shit I don’t want to spend all night on this”, so I just pop in a game that I’m already invested in and just play that for a while.

Grew up with an old PS1, was gifted a Wii, and played that for years, then after the PS4 came out my parents got me a PS3. Once I got my first job I bought myself a PS4. With each of these consoles I cherished every moment I got to play, and learned a lot about myself and my tastes in media. But when I bought my first PC to play games with my friends, as before then I had only played single-player, with the occasional Call of Duty with bots on. Within the last year or so, I have just been so turned off by gaming so much. Maybe it was because I was excited to play with others when I previously had never been able to, but I just feel so burnt out. Approaching my computer was a daunting task and I got anxious thinking about booting up discord and hopping on some game with my friends, whom I love and hang out with multiple times a week.
I started getting back into solo play again, like Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. I love stealth and it’s a classic that has a little bit of that old school stank on it. It’s such a breath of fresh air to not have to worry about anyone else’s enjoyment but mine.

Now I'm hopelessly addicted to youtube again. I don't even play games that much anymore. CZcams is just as bad as anything you can get addicted to like tik tok and instagram. After I finished Red Dead Redemption II (the last game I've been really hyped about) I sold it together with my PS4 and my PC and all it's games. Together with only a MacBook I've moved to a different city for four years now.
I sometimes play games I like together with long distance friends on my MacBook. Games such as Project Zomboid or Darkwood. I think I've mostly grown by limiting myself away from games, specially since the market barely makes any quality and goes for the "player engagement" (dopamine addiction triggers) instead. I like these games more because they engage me in the story building.
Right now I'm trying to read more books, which is difficult because I got ADD, which is why games can be such an addiction for me. And I can advice anyone who feels they are addicted to games to cut the addiction, journal, find something like a community to farm or do something artistic or productive or whatever. Find a healthy way to move your self around in this limited time you got spending in this universe. Cheers!

I just recently acquired both newest Gen Consoles and I find myself going back and replaying last gen games. My initial reason was the increased FPS /4K support etc etc.
However, the reality I have come to find is that those games like RDR2, Days Gone, Ghost of Tsushima, Spiderman, Miles Morales, Shadow of Mordor, TitanFall 2, etc are simply better games. They are better than almost every game(s) that have released for 'Next Gen' exclusively.
(no disrespect to Ragnarok, Elden Ring and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart)
I also acknowledge that like the video creater indicates regarding his life situation... I'm also a busy man. I am 44 years old, and a small business owner... maybe I am simply getting too old for video games, and more specifically, too old to play them as regularly as I did when I was 30. And back then I was going through a divorce, needing a crutch or vice other than alcohol and THC. (Although those are nice things too lol).

I had been gaming since a kid (on an Atari & Commodore 64), I agree that I don't game as much as I used to. Also the excitement for new games has fallen off quite a bit. I had a bunch of years without playing (as I had 3 small kids and had no time), but I returned when they got old enough to play. Mostly played football, baseball & all Tom Clancy releases (Ghost Recon, splinter cell). I was most excited when I found Far Cry 4 (open world) & Ghost Recon Phantoms (PVP). Was really excited when Division, Ghost Recon Phantoms and Far Cry 5 came out. That was the peak and after that I haven't found any newer games that are enjoying, probably because I've played them and nothing new is being released. I did enjoy Watchdogs I & II and now found Assassins Creed Unity & Syndicate. Have tinkered with Rocket League and Fortnite. Rocket League can be fun if you find a competitive match but they are few and far between. So I usually can play for about 30 min each evening to wind down then thats it. Put on a baseball or football game to watch.

I think it's because of the fact that it does take more effort you're by definition investing more into it because you actually have to physically do something with your hands, controlling characters or moving around the UI. shows and movies you just turn on and sit there watching without doing anything else. so games feel more like you're "taking" more out of your day because you're more physically involved since it involves more effort. but the effort is just your hands and thumbs 99% of the time and not legs or body, so even though it does take more "effort" than watching shows or movies the effort isn't the same as like playing a sport or the gym. so it's a lose-lose almost

I love playing games but live service’s truly made it difficult for me to appreciate as I did before. I’m currently playing the mass effect trilogy and it’s probably the best games I’ve played in quite a while. Gaming’s become more mainstream and probably the amount of games being created in 2023 surpasses immensely the amount of games being created pre-2015 but the quality has dropped very much so and with my interest in gaming did as well. There really is a lack of quality, creative innovation and love for game creation that existed before and that is very much lacking now. Not to say, of course, that there’re no good games out there but I’m saying that it’s usually more difficult to find them as well as their origins come more usually from indie gaming than AAA studios these days….

Be more choosey in the games you play. I feel pretty good playing something worth my time /money

  • @dawnaeaclaudiuscaesaraugus714

I've always had a weird relationship with gaming addiction - to me it comes down to choice. You can choose to play games for however many hours a day, every day, and not be addicted, but if you'd rather be doing other things, or should be doing other things, and can't/won't because you have to play games, then yeah, I'd say it's addiction.
I've been playing games for probably around 5 hours a day, every day, for about 25 years now, and I don't usually see it as a problem - it's my hobby, my outlet for stress, and the thing I enjoy doing. I have crippling social anxiety, insurmountable physical health issues that prevent me from doing much more than short walks (which I also do daily!) and I genuinely enjoy the time I spend gaming. I WANT to spend my time doing it, and it doesn't interfere with my life: I have a job, I'm in a relationship, I have never skipped meals or sleep to play, and even if I do feel sometimes that it's all I have to talk about...well, it's my main hobby, and everyone talks about their hobbies. Better that than engaging in politics I know nothing about, or spending hours arguing on social media, or whatever it is the kids these days do.
But. That said. I have had times where I WOULD say I was addicted to games, because I've spent more time on them than is healthy for me. I put about 10 hours a day into Monster Hunter Generations for about a month when that released, and that was all I did mostly, only stopping to eat and sleep. If I didn't have every achievement in Vampire Survivors I'd probably still be playing that. I don't dare pick up Final Fantasy XIV again, which I played to Platinum on the PS4 pre-Heavensward. There have been some games I have struggled to put down despite wanting to play other games, and do other things, and haven't felt able to because I felt I needed to play that game. I was definitely addicted to those games, and it's taken me years of conscious thought to recognise when that's a problem and when I need to not play something because of what it's doing to me.
So yeah, I don't think it's as black and white as "If you play for [insert number of hours a day] every day then you're addicted." really. It comes down to what you want out of life and whether or not you're getting it (when you can, of course) and if your time spent gaming interferes with that. I probably play games more than I used to, but as an adult I'm better at managing my time efficiently so that I can do this alongside the responsibilities that I have and the connections and other activities that I want to maintain. I could not stop playing games for a month. I would get bored, restless, and very irritated. I get annoyed if I can't play as much as I would like to in a day because I have other things to do. But the important thing is that I do those other things, and I think anyone would get irritated if they had to spend all day on things they don't really want to do. That's just life sometimes. I don't feel the need to do something else in my leisure time when I have a huge library of games to play, I enjoy playing them, and it's not interfering with my quality of life otherwise.

I'm older (34) and I stopped gaming altogether around the end of the lockdown in 2021. I gamed since I was 4 and now I think I wasted all the time I passed gaming, I wish I did care more about study/fitness/work/friends and more things. Nowadays I go to gym meet friends and study engineering. Games are addictive and studied to do that and even more now my advice is to stop or at least do a "normie" life all day long and then play to see if you want to play or was just to past the time aimlessly

I personally lost alot of interest in it but I'm primarily tired alot after work so I play in small burst unless a game really interest me like I find atomic heart alternative history and puzzles and constant action is great but I don't stay in the open parts of the game long I just want to go to each dungeon which was my favorite part of zelda growing up I love puzzles and constant action in games like doom and simpler games like tiny kin just give me alot of violence or thought provoking puzzles other wise your game will not grasp my attention I do enjoy playing pvp games but not if I can't get a true casual experience and the option for ranked modes to suit my moods if they include a battlepass my interest decreases to almost 0 because it just shows me they didn't want me to get my money's worth but I have found that I like playing commander in person for hours instead of video games because I get to make friends and have a personal experience I don't like to waste money so I like to make my dollar stretch which is why I like card games and video games I can always play them whenever I want unless it's one of these new shitty games where everything has to be on a time limit now games getting shut down shortly after luanch or just cutting content off that you payed for because you didn't do it fast enough so stupid not to mention the constant forcing of open world and shoving full of mindless fetch quest shit like just make a level based game like Mario I play it tons of times simple fun and not really open world more open level like darksouls like the fact they feel need to shove so much padding to extend the length of the games is annoying I have no problem buying a new game that short if it's actually fun thats why I buy nintendo games day one they're short but they're fun things like assassins creed going from like 20 hour games to 40 is just not for me because I know what they're doing and I'm not interested you put like 50 percent of unwanted and unnecessary crap in the game to say you have a longer game like no just make it short and sweet that's why I buy most games when they're on sale for 20 dollars like gamepass is great because all the quality titles are actually the low budget games they add to it instead of the triple a games like the triple a games are copying the shitty freemium games I don't want that shit make a good fun unique experience worth my money and for fuck sake if you make a coop game make it have couch coop online coop only sucks most of my friends are to poor to afford new consoles and games all the time

Ive found myself gaming less and less recently because there are precious few games that actually spark my interest lately
Also I almost never buy a game on release
As a uni student I can spend that money elsewhere and most games are just as fun 1-2 years later as they were on release
Also if I dont have anything good to play I most often just look for a book to spend my time with, I think thats more beneficial than the endless scrolling and netflix watching

I’m going through the same thing. Probably because of the spring hormones urging to end hybridation and going out to chase tail 😂 or the fact that games overall have been increasingly mediocre. I’m playing Hogwarts Legacy and I can’t for the love of me care about anything that happens in that game.

Apex legends had me over the last few years, I love the game but just find myself sat there all day if my girlfriend is at work and Im off and have done all my house work. On my days off I’d wake up at 4am go for a run and clean the house and jump on their at 7am for a full days session if possible. Best thing to do is just too bite the bullet and delete the game for a while. I’ve done this a few times since it’s release, having 3 or 4 month break then coming back makes the game much more fun again though, when I find myself falling into the hole I just delete it again.

I game more now, but not big games anymore. There simply isn't time to play a 60 to 100+ hour game. I play the crap out of retro styled games that are quick and give me a satisfying kick. I occasionally dabble in big games but I get nowhere due to the aforementioned no time. Adulting sucks.

I've sort of just come to the conclusion that there are more important things in life that I truly care about and affect me mentally.
And that playing games doesn't help or solve those things in anyway instead of passing the time with temporary happiness.
There are still games I will play such as Minecraft, TF2, Warframe or Luxor or LEGO games since they all stem to my childhood and nostalgia. Usually ones I feel aren't an over abundance of content and fun to 100% are fun too.

Well it’s kind of the reason why streaming is so Popular because people find a lot of enjoyment in watching others play a game from the comfort of their own mobile device. It’s also because many feel obligated to play games that are very popular but typically wouldn’t show any interest in it. I played GOW:Ragnorak and everybody is obsessed with the game but I found it to be extremely boring, monotonous, and such a chore to get through I couldn’t wait to be done…. I still played through it because it came with my PS5 but it was a bit of a waste of time as I never truly got full enjoyment it’s also just not my type of game. I feel ppl force themselves to play certain titles because of gaming fads and they find themselves going through something they normally would not have if it didn’t get so much clout.

Videogames have 2 problems. Accessibility (i.e. abandonware, old hardware, compatibility, cost prohibitive, etc.) and quantity over quality.

0:00 - 1:42 lol yep that’s the adult life experience for us gamers lol. You work so much you fall out of games and then you end up working so much that you get back into them eventually and it just repeats lol.

In real life what matters as an adult- true lasting friendship/relationship, afford a roof over head and food, clothing. Perhaps able to repair a few things
Games are nothing more than like vacations. Both aren't important and can be seen a waste of time. But they both can serve a purpose of "escaping" and simply enjoy if it hits that brain chemical that makes you feel good, relaxed, and just the feeling of having fun.
Reading is no different either. You read as an escapism and enjoyment if it doesn't lead to any $$$.
They are only a waste if you feel you aren't getting anything out of them. When you no longer see it as anything of worth. Which is perfectly OK.
In the end, no matter what, we all die. Complete end. So nothing really matters except if you feel as that moment comes you felt you had a good run of life. Regardless what others may think of your life.

Let s be real. If you dont make money out if it, or you enjoy it a lot, gaming is a vaste of adult life. When you re growing up there are a lot of ways to cut corners, like copy homework etc. Also if you grew up playing games, you ve been doing it for 10+ years. Feels like we had some very very good games over the years, so it s also hard to find new and innovative stuff.
