To me Skyrim is one of those games i go to just explore the wilderness. The tundra, the alpine forests, and the auroras in the night sky. It's such a beautiful game, one that you can just walk and explore.
    It's truly a zen moment.

I started a playthrough recently were I made my character have a background and a certain way to think/act. As it is also my comfort game, I've finished it dozens of times but I have discovered so many hidden dialogues and endings to quests that I had never seen in my 12 years of playing it, as I had never really role-played before. It's safe to say, too, that I possibly will never be tired of it seeing how entranced by it I am as a grown 23 year old. There is really something about it that I might never feel with even my other favorite games

Skyrim was the game that accompanied me through my darkest times when I was a teen, and I look back at it fondly. It's a bittersweet memory that I choose to embrace. While I haven't played Skyrim since then, I love watching videos about the game, especially stories like yours. Maybe I should give it a go. Thanks for the video!

I actually wasn't very big into gaming, but was donated a Xbox 360 and a copy of Skyrim while my girlfriend (now my wife of 9 yrs) and I were living dirt poor in a one bedroom apartment right after college with no cable or internet. This game brought back my imagination that I thought I had lost growing up and introduced me to open world games. This game will always be my choice if I'm stuck on a desert island and can only bring one game. Without this game I never would have played the Fallout series, RDR 1 & 2, Bioshock, Witcher, or GTA. It also open me up to the whole fantasy genre, including Game of Thrones and Harry Potter

I'm actually back on Skyrim thanks to playing through the Wildlander mod pack. Best thing I can say about Skyrim is Bethesda created an imperfect game but a perfect playground for the creativity of the community to run wild.

I was 45 when this game came out, (my first video game was Dungeons of Daggorath), and to this day, I love playing it. The ability to explore and be amazed at the views, go questing, craft to my hearts content, or a dozen other things, makes it feel like home even now. Think I'm going to go dust it off and play again.

It's unreal hearing you were 9 when Skyrim came out... I was 19 and watched the reveal trailer at midnight at university when some mates were pulling an all-nighter for an assignment. I was actually a massive Oblivion fan and put like 200 hours into that game when I was 15 so when I played Skyrim I was initially disappointed by how some systems seemed to have been more simplified or even missing. It's nice hearing a well thought out and introspective voice from your generation that grew up in what I consider the biggest leap in gaming both in gameplay and tech (the PS2 to PS3 era) because modern gamers will never have that big of a difference in generations again.

I am chuckling while thinking "and here I was just shy of 31". I was disappointed at the getgo as well. It took SkyUI before I liked the game since I despise that GUI. (it works for a gamepad, 104% failure for a PC) Now I have a playtime in the low 5 figures.
Even then, with that said. When I was using the original vanilla game (with official patches and dlc) as a performance test with my Steam Deck back at the end of 22 or beginning of 23 (I have played oldrim on more hardware than any other game at this point, so it makes a great benchmark for me). I planned on running through Helgen, perhaps Bleak Falls Barrow. Then use the coc command (center on cell) to bounce around the map checking various places. Well I started that, then about 50 hours later I realized that I had just played it for over 2 days straight. Ended up with around 150 hours of playtime (with an additional 10-25% more time when you consider all the loaded saves and whatnot. Keep in mind that as this was a performance test, I only had the official stuff installed. No mods whatsoever, not even the unofficial patch. (also note that I don't understand why people start having trouble pulling multiple all nighters a week on a weekly basis after their 20s... >_>)
addendum: ended up with an average framerate (including everything with the game on, loading screens and all) in the mid 50s, with it capped at 60 (there is a counter for drawn frames that you can bring up in the Deck's performance stuffs, take that and the time from the save file and you can easily do the math fairly precisely... I forget how many frames now, but it was somewhere around 5 or 6 million frames iirc)
addendum 2: I abhorred Morrowind and completely passed on Oblivion due to how much I utterly hated Morrowind. But by the time of 11/11/11, I had stopped caring about the earlier TES games altogether (Seriously, I had forgotten that Oblivion even existed by then, that was how little I cared). So I was basically going into Skyrim being about as neutral as possible and without any baggage or preconceptions (good or bad).

Skyrim is a game that I have just carried on going back to and doing another playthrough modded and un modded since 2011. I remember the hype up to release. 13 year old me being a bit disappointed at first on release day ( I played oblivion and a lot was removed/changed from that ) but I stuck to it and it quickly became something special to me. I put a stupid amount of hours into the game on 360 and hit the cap of what was 81 at the time. Doing multiple other playthroughs and getting all achievements. Years later the modding scene gets bigger and better and my brother gets a PC again ( we had one but it was much older and couldn't run anything like Skyrim well, was used for older games ) I modded Skyrim on it and played there on and off. I stopped playing for a while till the PS4 release in 2016, got it again on sale and re did the entire 100% on that on top of a modded playthrough and more. Doing another playthrough rn on a heavily modded version, running over 2000 mods. I have gone back to this game and played so much of this game yet it never gets boring to me, modded or un modded. Its something truly special and I am worried that TES6 wont capture that again.

I don't fondly remember the first time I managed to get my hands on the game but it was always my favourite game growing up and I even made one of the best friends I ever had through a shared love of Skyrim, I will probably always come back to this game as like you said it just feels so comforting to me.

Honestly, I've tried to rack my Brian on why I love Skyrim. Like the combat is actually garbage, the characters aren't all that interesting, and the plot is serviceable.
But there's something to the world of tamriel that is just special. The world is just so magical, it lifts up everything around it, it makes the characters interesting, the plot exiting, and the combat becomes decent. I've watched hundreds of hours of Skyrim lore videos because the world is so perfect.
Modding is also a great benefit to Skyrim, because now that I'm old and cynical and have higher standards I can download mods to improve the aspects I find lacking.

I agree with everything. I just got into Skyrim since 2011, and even then, it was my older brother who mostly played Skyrim while I sat and watched. A couple weeks ago was my first time actually deciding to play Skyrim and I absolutely love it. The OST, the fact that if you climb a mountain, you can see White Run is just so cool. I can only imagine what the next Elder Scrolls game is gonna be like. One thing I hope is that cities/towns are scaled more properly.
But back to me getting into Skyrim, it really set me on course to get into the whole series of The Elder Scrolls. I watched lore videos, ice bergs, theory's, and so on. I remember when the Skyrim Trailer's started to come out in 2011 and even before, I was 9 I think. Is it strange I feel nostalgic for a game I didn't really play until recently? I absolutely love Skyrim, the world itself is insane. It's big. It's filled with a bunch of things to do. The only thing I noticed recently is what you said, the trend to hate Skyrim because it's not Morrowind. I consider most Morrowind fans to be the ultimate gatekeepers of the franchise.
To conclude my take, I hope with TES 6 or 7, we get something truly big and amazing. Like, imagine exploring all of Tamriel in a single game. That would be insane. Depending on how advanced Starfield is, I think it's possible. I'm not a game developer yet, but what was impossible 10+ years ago in gaming is being done now, who's to say Tamriel would be impossible now or later on..
Love the videos, binged this one and your Open World one! Keep it up and I look forward to seeing more.

Life has been horrible for the past few years, since 2017, and I literally just bought Skyrim Anniversary (the one with everything) because it was on sale. Literally love this game.
I would like to add, I agree with you about mods. I fall in line with playing how the devs want the game to be played when it came out. People always tell me about these Halo mods and I always reply that I couldn't care less. Same with Skyrim. Though, the only mods I've ever installed where the ones that made the Skybox and graphics better. I can only do so much on my Series S.
Thank you for the videos man, seriously. Don't stress it to hard, just do what you think is best for the channel because I am down for anything!

Or the random encounters in the wild that werent even small quests, but a little snippet where a cart was upturned and a small family was murdered by bandits.

I have to give mods *ALL* the credit for getting me to like the vanilla game. One mod in particular, SkyUI. I installed the game sometime within a week or two of its launch. That interface which ships with the game is fine for a gamepad, but wow is it beyond the pale for PC. I hated the vanilla UI so much that I had uninstalled Skyrim within a couple of days and maybe 10 hours of playtime, if that. Then a little while later I became aware of SkyUI and realized that it fixed that which I hated. Since then I have probably spent over a year of my life inside of that game (probably closer to 400 days likely more, 400 days is 9,600 hours btw and I estimate I have a couple thousand more)

I use it a lot in this video as that’s the main point around the idea of Modding that I’m discussing. Also do you watch videos trying to find points you disagree with? just interested because of the way you worded that final part.

    • @LordofSorrow7
      @LordofSorrow7 Před 10 dny

Completely agree on the canvas idea. I myself use Skyrim to roleplay this or that, release pressure and take a good laugh when followers say their phrases ("Oh look ! A cave ! I wonder what's inside !" ... "But Lydia, we just came out of this cave for Pete's sake !") and so on... Modding the game is just a way to see what's possible. But all in all vanilla is just as good.
      To your question now.
Short answer : If I'm being honest, yes. Not this time though. Sometimes I just want to chill.
      Long answer :
Not all the time, but if I'm trying to understand what's on the mind of people for a particular issue, I must watch videos/listen to people from "the other side" to understand and debate seriously.
For example : Why new games are or aren't worse than older games, or why graphics can be more important than the plot of a game. I give gaming examples but apply this to many world issues, scientific questions.
Aristotle said something along the lines of "It is the mark of a wise mind to be able to discuss a thought without agreeing to it". Or really something close. I watch videos I feel I will agree with because I want to see if the content creator will give the same arguments I could give, I watch videos I feel I won't agree with because the thought process of the content creator and the sources can be interesting and lead to better understanding of the thing that's being thought on.
We can agree on the result without agreeing on the steps leading to it.
We can disagree on the result but agree on those steps, thinking they are can be interpretated the other way.
We also can agree or disagree on all, or partially on the steps and the result, there's a myriad of possibilities.
We also can just discuss without agreeing or disagreeing on things and enhance our love and passion for a subject, hobby... So yeah.
All this text just to say yes. Half of the time I watch content knowing I will not agree but some details can be useful.

The very word "amateur" literally means they do it because they love it. The word comes to English from French, but both the French and English words descend from Latin. The original Latin words it comes from are _amator_ (lover) and _amare_ (to love).
Thus an amateur is someone who does something because they love it, not for some form of recompense. When people argue against paid mods from this vantage point, I argue that their point is very very sharp. (That is, arguing that mods should remain an amateur affair. Once you start getting paid, it becomes game development rather than modding... Goes this line of thought. One that I am inclined to agree with.)
We already have more "micro"-transactions than you can shake a stick at. I honestly think that for Bethesda this had nothing to do with the modding community and everything to do with making the increasing number of microtransactions more palatable. Even for people who just casually looked at what they were doing and never spent a dime on them. Giving modders a spotlight sounds better in PR speak than "increased the size of our workforce" and CERTIANLY costs Bethesda less money than actual proper employees would (given that employees get actual benefits).

I wish I had my 360 hours too. I think I can access my Xbox One hours for SE, maybe. Either way, I play on Steam now and it definitely doesn't reflect the amount of time I've actually played. (Not to mention the time I spent on my illegitimate Legendary edition when I firat switched to PC).
    Same for Oblivion.

those people are gonna be really mad when they rerelease skyrim again to celebrate the release of ES6
also it couldnt be the grandfather of open world games, we had games like legend of zelda back in 1986, and even then there were some potentials before that. skyrim is like the great great great great great grandson. gta3 would be closer to being the grandfather

I love Skyrim. I usually roleplay out some scenarios and embrace it for what it is. This game made people's childhoods. Some fans or elder scrolls fans would argue that Oblivion is better but the popularity of Skyrim is what made this game unique in my opinion. It's not about what is the best, it's about the experience itself. Other than that, love the ES lore and everything surrounding it. Much love to you all! ❤️ 🤙

Skyrim is a special experience for sure. My first open world game may have been Far Cry 2 but Skyrim was by far the game that got me hooked on the genre. At the time it ticked every box for me and I was borderline obsessed with it. I put an embarrassing amount of time in the game and I don’t regret any of it, it was time well spent. Skyrim definitely isn’t a bad game but it’s definitely a shallow experience when you really break it down. It’s a drip-fed endorphin rush and that’s just fine. It really really works for what the game sets out to do. I still don’t think any other game has been able to make exploration as addictive as Skyrim has been able to. It really is impressive.

People don't understand that bugs are statistical anomalies. They think because they experience a mod, and a few hundred, to a thousand people online experience them, that must mean everybody experiences them. The amount of people that play this game without complaining about bugs actually vastly outweighs the number who have.

I used to stealth archer, a lot. Theae days I try to do a knight build, and switch back and forth between 2 handed, and one handed and shield (sword and board for MMO fans). I do still use archery, but rarely put points into it, and it's the plan C weapon, when I need to kill someone far away without navigating whatever maze it takes to get there lol.

As a huge fan of the older ES games, (Vanilla) Skyrim is the only one I got bored of, there's no real incentive to make different characters and try different things because almost everything can be done in one playthrough, there are still quests and guilds I haven't even touched in the other games. The scale is laughable even compared to oblivion, and the lack of any really custom builds is a shame for the series that basically invented class custimization.
I also think it's success was bad for the gaming industry as a whole, and this seems to be the start of AAA games coming out extremely unfinished and unpolished,( the previous games are in no way perfect of course)
I'll admit i'm pretty biased haha

I totally agree that Bethesda gets all the heat while others get a pass. E.g. latest assassin's creeds were super bloated and repetitive but gained general praise from the usual outlets... Even BG3 which, although still super cool, is touted as this super polished masterpiece while having many bugs Bethesda would never be forgiven for, including in some cases endings not triggering properly.

Its amazing for what it has but even i feel that it really lacks in some parts. Compared to Oblivion, Skyrim has much better mechanics and look but to me Oblivion has much better quests be it the main, side, faction or dlc.
Skyrim felt like i was an Isekai character being brought into a new world. Who you are doesn't really matter as you can be a Kahjit or Argonian and still be able to enter Windhelm despite those races not being allowed inside. Considering the whole civil war and prejudice happening, they could have really sone more to make a race more than just gameplay alone.
Overall, Skyrim is an rpg GAME while Oblivion is an RPG game. I still love Skyrim but i can only play it with mods now.

Overall the only part where I agreed is that when you're a kid you're more lenient.
Everything else I don't even know how you can say it with a straight face.
Skyrim is very surface level on everything. To call it a great game is to lower people's expectation to such a low point it baffles me.
How about saying that a pure skinner box is good design while you're at it ?

I remember Skyrim being a bit spooky when I was younger. Sometimes it still happens when I play games like 7 Days to Die. The game feels really eerie to begin with, but some of the abandoned buildings are just nerve racking lol especially since, if you hit the wrong block it might actually collapse!
Oddly enough, despite there not being anything inherently scart in Minecraft, the game is really great at capturing that spooky vibe sometimes.

I think your section about mods is very uncharitable. You strawman Skyrim modders as people trying to make the game easier or as even cheaters and that is an unnecessarily cynical way of viewing these players and most mods. Most mods are for immersion, just like you said you'd want out of them, but immersion means different things to different people.
