2023 Proved the old way of Gaming is Dead

- 2023 might be one of the best years for back-to-back big releases that we’ve seen in a while. From games at the beginning of the year like Hogwarts Legacy and Jedi Survivor that started the year off strong, Tears of the Kingdom bringing us more greatness throughout, and then finishing the year with Spiderman 2, Starfield, and Bauldersgate 3.
This year has given us amazing games and at the beginning of the year, I made a video saying that gaming was dead. Dead in the value to the player not in popularity and I do still believe in this statement. That doesn’t mean I can’t see how great of a year this has been and talk about it.
So today we are going to sit down and discuss the year of 2023, the highs, the lows, and how the issues I raised in the previous video are still prevalent in the triple-A gaming space.
So let's talk about those exact things. Grab a cup of tea, sit back, and relax for us to audit the year 2023.

Fun stuff - Exiled, Is gaming dying?, Gaming is dead, why is gaming boring, open world games, RPG games, open worlds suck, multiplayer games are boring, Minecraft, rdr2, red dead 2, modern gaming, indie games, triple A gaming, triple A sucks - Hry
2023 was a goat of a year and I’ve got such a big backlog of games to play so I’m happy 2024 has barely any big game releases currently playing resident evil 4 and blown away how such a perfect game was improved in the remake in almost every way
I’m so glad you mentioned Alan Wake 2 here. It has quickly became one of my favorite games.
2023 honestly took me by suprise. I had so much fun with so many games. Lies of P, Spiderman 2, Baldur's Gate 3, and even Phantom Liberty was all incredible. 2024 does seem a bit weaker but hopefully with infinite wealth, codename red, rise of ronin, and maybe wolverine it becomes great!
indeed. I'll be trying to play a load of games this year but still have a ton to catch up on ahah.
@@Exiled7 I have a question have you played Lethal company or risk of rain 2? please respond
@Exiled7 I have a question have you any interest of doing indie games like Lethal company, risk of rain 2, ultrakill, vermintide 2, roboquest and deep galactic? please respond.
As of right now they aren't going to be on my list to play over the next year as I already have a massive back log of games to get throug with some of them being indie titles.
Exiled I really enjoyed the video but I have a question have you played Lethal company or risk of rain 2, also do you any interest of doing indie games like roboquest, gunfire reborn, deadcells, subnautica, ultrakill, roguetrader, vermintide 2 and V.A Proxy? I hope you respond.

@@Exiled7 so thats a no, you don't want to give indie games a second chance? I mean Lethal company out sold most triple AAA games, you seem to think that indie games aren't any good some reason that's kind of a red flag, also its good to get out of your convert zone just saying.
atleast that indie games don't make broken messes at launch.
I just came across your channel (god bless the algorithm) and i love your content so far
Have you made/considered making a video about mobas?
With smite 2 announced about a week ago and the moba community slowly but surely reducing in masses, i think this topic could make an awesome video
If you need some insight i used to be a dedicated smite player (ill definetly be joining your discord so ill also contact there if thats ok with you)
Good video. Keep em coming
Thank you!! Hoping to have a couple more this month!
Wasn’t Forspoken a ps5 exclusive at launch? I just remember playing it when it came out on ps5
shit yeah, Honestly my brain for some reason locked it in with xbox. Not sure why. When I was looking them up I think I just assumed it was. My bad!
When you do at one point the 70$ dollar game like you mentioned here, please keep in mind that this solely from the perspective of someone from the US.
We outside of the US, for example here in germany, have never known those "stable" prices.
With each new console Generation the prices of the games rose by around 10€.
Thats why for us currently a new game costs between 80€(87$) and 85€(93$).
The US gets treated differently. We saw that especially the last time when sony announced that the ps5 will costs more(+50€) in every region except in the US.
I understand that. In the UK which is were I'm from they are £70 which is roughly $80ish dollars.
@@Exiled7 i just did some searching on sites like psprices and found out that there seems to be some kind of tier system when it comes to prices. The hardest hit (in the Industrial world) is the Euro zone, followed by UK, Australia, then the US and Canada and at the bottom of the prices are the East asian countries.
I used tekken 8 standard version as an example to see how the prices are set in each region.
Yeah I agree. At least though it's not like some developing countries that are looking at what would be the equivent to a 3rd of there monthly income to buy one. It's still a massive issue that I believe no one actually benefits from and is all the result of awful choices to not run gaming companies like proper business as they attempt to print money.
Loved it!

I didnt get the joke if it is
Essay is still good, as always. Thank you
thank you!
Also just realised that I made a mess up in the edit ahah.
I assumed it was a joke too... Scott Kramer has made me question myself when I spot errors like this because he actually does it on purpose 🙃
Let's go!
Starfield is "the best year of gaming" to you?? 😮💨
I still remember 2011, when Skyrim came out.
Did you watch the video?
a lot of releases but none of them really great for me personally. as someone who's pretty much been an online games person since 2016, last few years have been dire and ive gone back to single player stuff and got into other hobbies
Yeah the last few years has been quite poor for multiplayer lovers. Currently finding Halo Infinite quite fun since they updated it might be worth giving it a go.
@@Exiled7maaaaaan you read my mind! Fired it up today, got absolutely destroyed by veterans for 3 matches before alt f4’ing out of there
18:25 ... "Half baked releases that aren't racing games" Bwahahaha XD
Yyyup, the hype-cycle of Forza may make it seem still good from the outside, but this years rabbithole happened to be racing games for me, so I can assure you, even that is rotten in the core, despite not being as obvious a case as Halo Infinite.
Anyway great vid as always. Loved the structuring.
And yyyup, while previous bottlenecks yielded an amazing harvest for 2023, the underlying issues mentioned in Gaming is Diying are still there... and if the curse doesn't change, a collapse is inevitable for cleansing. But even that's not the end... while videogames are new in the grand scheme of things, bonding, learning and expressing through play is a fundamental aspect of the human condition. So if we don't bring an extiniction event upon humanity as a whole, gaming is unkillable and everything is gonna be alright.
Will leave Konstantin Kisin's favorite Eric Hoffer quote here though, “Every great cause begins as a movement, becomes a business, and eventually degenerates into a racket.” At least AAA is certainly at the transition from business to racket, we'll see wether healing or collapse then reneissance is the next step, too early to tell.
Well, naturally, you were wrong. lol It never died or even came close. All industries go yp and down, but the indie and AA market has been dominating for more than 10+ years. Not to mention what ha sbeen achieved with VR, AR, Mobile, and streaming. Plus, AAA has been killing too, but it's just had an equal amount of stagnation.
My arguemnts within my other videos nver claimed that gaming itself was dying in general metrics so I would have to disagree as the main points of contention that I had are still around.
@Exiled7 Yeah, I'm aware of that. I was just responding based on the click bait thumbnail and title I see on so many videos. I've seen your prior videos, but I haven't watched this one quite yet. I like your stuff, so there are no issues here.
Forspoken is a timed ps console exclusive silly goose
AAA Gaming has far too much money involved in it, and yes AAA is the problem here for the most part (Indie games have their own issues with the lack of quality control and having to wade through mostly sewage releases on Steam to find the gems). Many people think Starfield is a weak game also-- it's clearly shallow and has serious issues with its fragmented world design and poor execution of procedural generated maps. Hype and marketing is very powerful (for some reason), but I bet in the years to come the game will not age well.
Baldur's Gate 3 is the first proper PC-first high budget RPG for a VERY long time. Like it or not, consoles and their ridiculous absolute restrictions to gamepads make those kinds of games very hard to sell. Yes, it is possible to port the controls over to a gamepad but frankly I don't care how much people protest-- a mouse is ALWAYS going to be better and the primary platform influences game design (console producers will be far more inclined to chase a broad audience and therefore simplify games-- so I'm not pointing the finger at console gamers).
and yet indie games still dominate the market
@@Guyver-Kight0 I wouldn't say that was true. Fortnite is not indie, and even Minecraft could hardly be described as indie these days.
@williamarthurfenton you made a poor argument towards indie games, their is a lot of good indie games.
I would disagree by literal definition that indies are "dominating" the market as they simply aren't. If they were you would see far more mass adoption of them. They are definetly still massively on the rise.
@@Exiled7 People do rather seem to forget that despite the shovels of hate thrown at Activision and the like Call of Duty consistently sells extremely well. Loot boxes and all the excesses of modern gaming exist because consumers at large are more than happy to buy into it.
If anything, the youtube content farm is dying. Video game essayists have hit a wall.
