My Honest First Impressions on Starfield

- Starfield for some was the game they’ve been wishing for since they first heard of the idea of a Bethesda game in space and for others they have done nothing but complain since its announcement. This has to be the most divisive game before launch I’ve ever seen. Not after release but before release. The aftermath of games being underwhelming on multiple occasions with the likes of Cyberpunk, No Man Sky, Fallout 76, and Battlefield 2042 mixed with the current space of exclusivity has made two big camps to form. One of extreme disdain for this game for either not being happy it's not coming out on PS5 or because they dislike Bethesda. The other side had high hopes for the game but there was a third group that I was a part of which was keeping up with the information but not holding my breath for the best game ever made. So today I wanted to give you my thoughts so far about Starfield from the gameplay, loading screens, character choice, and graphics to how this game has highlighted what I don’t like about the ability of the online world to create echo chambers for the game release. So sit down grab a cup of tea and let's talk about Starfield.

I know this doesn't fix the load screen problem, but I recommend using the Photo Mode from time to time. They took the mechanic from Fallout 76 and your screenshots in game get used for the load screens! Still a load screen but it's a bit better when each one is a memory of your journey.
Very well made video! Thank you for sharing your experience so far!
I wholehearted agree on the negatives. This game is fast travel upon fast travel upon fast travel. Everything is disjointed.
It's like a mobile game where you just click to do a quest and click to do another quest and then click to do another quest
Great video! Can't wait to see the whole review later on!
Nice video, I appreciate the seeming lack of bias :)
I saw someone stream the game on Twitch one or two days ago, and it seems like you've got it right. You and the stream/s have intrigued me about the game, but I have to put off playing it on Gamepass or something because my backlog is a bit too big atm.
I do find the stealth very satisfying -- you may need to experiment with suppressed weapons (and maybe one more rank in Stealth?)
I think its the companions that make stealth very difficult. Exiled said he only used Sara, but Andreja is the companion with stealth skills. She does still cause some issues, but I think stealth with her is more viable. Solo is still going to be ideal.
This was good level headed take, subbed 😊.
Top stealth tips in Bethesda games.
1) don’t wear armour or anything heavy. Clothing is best
2) Use silent weapons like knives.
3) NEVER take a companion with you, introverts are best for stealth.
4) stay away from brightly lit areas, hang in the shadows.
I absolutely love the game.. I just needed to get used to the new menu . Just found myself a kick ass ship with armor and on my way to a floating casino in space
Where did you find that ship ?
Modders need to create something that loads the game DURING the cutscene. Instead of a black screen, load while it plays a landing or grav jump cutscene. That would be much better IMO.
Your approach of not getting hyped and having almost no expectations + an approach of "I'll just see what we get" seems like the way to go to avoid disappointment for when a game finally hits. But at the same point, isn't that kind of boring? Getting hyped and learning about a game leading up to its release is a big part of the enjoyment of video games. It's not unreasonable to expect more from a developer who's been doing this for such a long time and has so many resources to pump into their project, are we just supposed to settle with what we get every time? Like yeah that would solve the disappointment issue but it's hard to shake the belief that the next game we only get once a decade from a veteran game studio with tons of resources should blow our socks off and not just make us go "Yeah, it's pretty good!".
People have been saying that the choices in dialogue and the story are great. That's the most important thing for me. Knowing that it's just another BGS game is enough for most of us to buy in. But I'm disappointed with the CTRL C CRTL V nature of many of the planets.
can't help but think Bethesda are turning into UBISOFT. i think it's well known that a lot of people got tired of UBISOFT making all of their releases so similar to each other. for me, Bethesda games really do all play the same. Whether it's Fallout, Oblivion, Skyrim...and now Starfield...the way they play is almost identical. you get an intro to the world and you experience a special event that sets the scene. Customise character. Main plot. Side Missions. Lots of items to pickup. Factions to join. I can't wait to play Starfield but I do worry I'll get bored after 20 hours...Bethesda really need to have added something "more" than the usual stuff to get me excited. i feel they're playing it safe when making games as they've grown too big and can't afford to make mistakes but it's a massive shame, i know they're talented...just wish we could see a bit more life and originality in their creations.
Bethesda haven’t ever tried to innovate. They’ve always just improved on previous titles for the last 25 years. They also sell the games and franchises based of the worlds and stories not the gameplay.
No one ever said Skyrim, oblivion, fallout 3 or 4 had amazing innovation in gameplay. It’s the worlds they sell you on.
Fallout 3 introduced VATS, which was an innovative way of alluding to the turn based combat of its isometric forebears in first person. Starfield doesn't appear to offer anything new in that regard - just standard FPS combat.
The difference is Ubisoft makes games that other developers are capable of making and have made and continue to make.
With Bethesda, sure, they make the same game over and over with few upgrades, but still, nobody is making games like Bethesda. You know a Bethesda game when you play one. When you play a Ubisoft game, the distinction is not so clear because ubisoft games are generally more generic. Nobody else does the Bethesda template. And that's what makes the games special in their own right.
@@Austin2Sexy1000% Bethesda games aren't the most technically advanced but they are undoubtedly unique, and the way they support the mod community is also unique. They could change the Engine to ue5 or something, close off mod support, make something state of the art, but it would be just another good game, not a Bethesda game.
@@Exiled7 propper shittake my guy, they innovated in every way, the combat gets better in every title they make, animations, dialogs, graphics, too rpg systems which are maybe dumbed down over the years but their views is just to make it fun and the game is fun . You had some good points with the ubisoft rant vids but now you just shittalking.
A very sound overview of your initial experience. I’d say I’m in the same camp in that I’ve been incredibly skeptical of every game launch over the last few years, no man’s sky burnt me enough to make me realise that anticipating a game for what it ‘could’ offer simply isn’t viable, so here I am after having only looked at the official material and post - launch reviews from CZcamsrs, trying to figure out what the game is like before a purchase.
But I am still surprised by this volume of hate you are seeing. I’ve only seen some reviews where people are disappointed by the lack of free space travel but that is really it. But even then they told us about the tile based systems, and if it had free travel I guarantee it would have cost so much in terms of performance and quality that it would harm the other systems. So far I’ve heard that it’s dialog is great, characters are intriguing, level design is fantastic and it’s rpg mechanics are a step up from the rest.
But then again I did kind of disconnect myself from the communities building hype since I don’t consider it healthy anymore, so I probably haven’t been exposed to any of it.
I wouldn’t say reviewers are hating but more comment sections with unreasonable people
Im extremely addicted to Starfield right now. There is something about it that makes me want to keep jumping to new planets and run through missions.
Same here. I’m going away tomorrow so can’t play for a few days. Tragic moments when a game that peaks your interest clashes with real life 😂
@@Exiled7I heard the exploration of the game is repetitive and shallow. Did you find that case?
@@pricelessppp all i can say this game is not worth ur money. wait for a bit and a lot of good games are coming out
The biggest problem for a lot of people, including myself, will be the loading screens and lack of seamless space to land transitions. Hoping the modding community pull through on this or Bethesda address it and either explain why it's impossible, or attempt to implement it.
Great video though!
It’s impossible because they’re still using that crappy 20 year old engine!
@@Nineteen1900Hundred I thought they drastically updated it?
I wouldn't mind the loading screens if each planet offered more hand-crafted detailed content. The depth should be enough to justify needing to load so much. As it is you wait for a generated map where you run for several minutes to find at most a few instances of content and at worst randomly generated loot and a combat encounter.
@@conahscreations They did, this is it. That question highlights the problem.
If you complain that it’s a 20 year old engine please do the same about the unreal engine as it’s technically the same thing just updated like the creation engine
The skyrim comparison is not accurate at all. If you're in any of those cities, there's loading screens for every door you interact with. So it's not entirely a fair comparison.
You also don't need to do mission quests at all to level up. There's so many ways to level up, from the enourmous amount of side quests, exploring planets (you can sell survey results for money and xp), doing mission quests like you mentioned, etc.
I never said you need level quests to level up. And sure that’s fine but it’s loading screens within the same place so you still feel like you’re in the same space whereas starfield doesn’t feel like you are truly expiring the galaxy by going from place to place more than check point to check point. doesn’t mean it’s not good but does take away from immersion
Max out stealth. Leave your companion behind. Yes you must walk crouch. I have walk set to my mouse thumb button for use on the fly
Having fun so far game is bossed up. Once you figure out what you're doing, the Ship combat is fun and the voice acting and combat is like top tier.
If u like Bethesda style rpgs, you'll like Starfield. 😊😊
I am downloading it rn. Bethesda rpgs have always been right up my alley. I think MS pushed Beth too hard to market this game to everyone. Bethesda Studios games are a niche. A big niche but a niche nonetheless.
Did you ever get to play Morrowind?
Impactful is a word that I find illogical, unnecessary, and clumsy.
Minor gripe aside, I find modern games lack character, colour and imagination.
But I agree, this game seems like it’s Fallout 4 in space. If that’s your thing, then go for it.
What do you guys see in thins combat? It's just spongy Fallout 4.
I don't see anything new.
It’s called the combat isn’t something you have to care about. The combat in the Witcher isn’t amazing, in Skyrim it’s not amazing, in baulders gate it’s not amazing. Because they aren’t the main focus of the game
@@Exiled7 let me rephrase: how is this combat better then Fallout 4? It's the same thing, but more sponge. Maybe it's me, but I did not feel anything new.
More customisable, more attenuated to give you more options, more variety in play styles. Combat isn’t just the gun play. Which is still better. With smoother animations and better hit reg.
@@neolynxeryou say that but what does that even mean
I'm over 40+ hours in the game so far and to be honest its a great fun game and im having a blast with it but the Game of the Generation they hyped it to be doesn't exist there. With that said i think just because it's not the game of the generation atleast for me doesn't mean its not amazing.
The game is hardly divisive. A lot of people just think Bethesda sucks.
less than 30 fps on a 2060 1080p low. Using FSR at 50% res cant even get 40 fps while looking smudged. A 4060 which is is 2-3 months old cant get 60 fps at 1080p no fsr. I don't care how good the game is if I have to buy a console or a whole new pc just to play it. They should have delayed it in my opinion.
Delayed it why? Just because your pc can’t run it? The game isn’t poorly optimised, it’s just a massive game that requires good specs to play.
Also a 4060 can run it above 60 you just can’t do so on maxed out choices.
@@Exiled7 there are many massive games that are not this demanding. From what I am seeing the LOD is just way to far and we have no option to change it except with mods.
I was Hyped for this game as a No Mans Sky, Elite dangerous fan but it's not for me, I wanted a space exploration game with Rpg shooter elements, but Starfield is a Shooter Rpg with Exploration elements. I disliked all the bethesda Fallout games so the fact I think its barely a 4 out of 10 isnt suprising but also not the games fault its just really really not for me.
how’s it barely a 4/10?
@Exiled7 that was specificly only for someone like me who never liked a game in Bethesda's Fallout series and who expected the Exploration to be on par with the other space explorer games already on the market for years, if your coming to the game for that reason the cringe writing and stiff voice acting out of a 60's Disney Animatronics show are hardly enough to win them over.
how hard is it to make a great open world rpg in deep space
Try making one
@@Exiled7 not my job
If no one’s been able to do it so far then assume it’s hard. Don’t just think it’s not going to be difficult
That's not the right question. The better question is why does Bethesda keep making the same mistakes?
Lol Star Citizen hs been trying for a decade so...
I would say FFXVI was just as hated, but that game is played by far less people.
Maybe
So lame these comps can’t make for all consoles. Thought we were past this
Fallout 4 in space.
Without the space 😂😂😂 can't even fly to planets without black screens 😂
the games great
The fast travel and the loading screens sucks you out of the immersion.
I found Sarah in the game. I played mostly with Sarah. I fell in love with Sarah. I married Sarah, and never looked back! End of discussion. ❤
Finally someone mentions destiny
People hated this game before it came out because everyone wants the next elder scrolls not a dumb space game
well not really. most people complaining aren’t saying we want the next elder scrolls.
@@Exiled7they are mostly. All of time and budget could have been put into elder scrolls. Now fans have to wait 5 years or more.. that's nearly 20 years after the last elder scrolls rpg. Unfortunaly life is too short to wait so long
I’d go so far as to say just focus quest and don’t explore the game becomes bunch better
Frankly I haven't played it just out of morals, cause Todd basically sh*t on his other two major IPs when asked about them getting updates and bug fixes. Lost alot of faith in Bethesda at that moment
You better not play anything from cd project, Activation Blizzard, Ubisoft, EA or Sony then! As all of them are not exactly morally ethical companies
@Exiled7 bg3, arma 3, asseto corsa and paradox games who whilst being cash graby are atleast honest about it and have a bit of respect for their fan base
@@Exiled7why add CDPR to the list? They actually took the time to fix cyberpunk and turn it into a fantastic game. Bethesda are just going to rely on mods like they always do
People need to stop making excuses for games that over promise and under deliver. If devs and publishers keep getting away with it gamers will never get the highest quality games on release.
We wouldn’t anyways. Maybe you need to remember that not everything will be perfect. Tech companies over promise, films build a tone of hype and some don’t hit the mark, food isn’t always as good as it could be. Everything can’t just be perfect because you think in a hypothetical world of pure dismissal and negativity to create a supposed high quality game. Once a bar gets raised some will fail to hit it and others won’t. That bars on you not everyone else and if that’s going to stop you from enjoying a ton of games then so be it.
Never buy into the bullshit, Of course they will big it up, Make it seem like the best game ever made so they sell copies, That's there job, Yeah it's scummy but there you go, No changing that unfortunately.
Wait and listen to other gamers Views and opinions (Not Critics, They are essentially a part of the marketing campaign) Watch gameplay footage, Once you're aware on what you're really purchasing then decide for yourself if this game will appeal to you or not.
I’ve been through no man’s sky, that was back in 2016 and here we are saying the same things again. The instant I heard ‘1000 planets’ I instantly got no man’s sky flashbacks, since you can’t feasibly have that much space and still offer the environmental complexity and storytelling that Bethesda are known for.
Anyone looking into this should have been hesitant, since it’s only going to underdeliver if you set your expectations too high. It’s a miserable mindset to have I know, I haven’t been able to be properly excited for a game in several years, but that’s just how it is at the moment
@@knightstemplar955 I’ve been doing that for 10+ years now. I’m not mad about being fooled I’m saying the reason people keep getting fooled is that we accept it and then excuse it when the game launches. If I promised you a car with 4 wheels and you got a car with 2 wheels and no front seats, you would call that fraud, not marketing. Cult of positivity goes hard though so you gotta be happy with the 2 wheeled car because that’s just Bethesda charm.
@@thebulletkin8393yeah I didn’t buy it.
Is it really as boring as an AC title as people say ?
Anyone who says that is being intellectually dishonest to both Starfield and assassin's Creed games (except for maybe 3 of them)
You're playing on PC of course you don't notice the 30fps, it doesn't have that limitation on PC..least do some research first bro.
Yo did you even watch the video 😂, he he's playing on both pc and xbox
I personally like combat and story telling more fun and this game has none of them good. Even npcs are so poorly made you can't even look at them. So other than some good graphics and visuals they have nothing to offer
People want it to be NMS or SC. It's not
Indeed, they aren’t the same types of experiences and people shouldn’t be constantly trying to compare them
It's closer to Mass Effect or Fallout, it still falls short for what it is.
@@Exiled7Then why did Bethesda market it toward that crowd? It's one thing if they advertised this as the next Mass Effect, but they advertised it as a space sim even though it isn't. They set up these expectations all the way to release, instead of being honest and transparent.
@@Exiled7 People are going to regardless because those 3 are all games set in space with exploration in mind, it's just that all 3 have different variants on how they tell a story and how they go about some forms of combat.
The space travel feels like Mass Effect... from 2007
5 hours in. Refunded. Did not hate on it before launch, because i've beaten all BGS games (except 76) and though i knew what to expect, and i love space. Turns out, Todd's level of not giving a crap actually managed to surprise me.
What do you mean? Also 5 hours is hardly anything to see anything from almost any rpg game let alone an open world rpg.
@@Exiled7 As i said, I have enough experience in Todd Howard games to understand what happened here. And as a gamedev myself, i see how sloppy everything is. 5 hours was enough. I'm not big on Stockholm syndrome people develop for Bethesda games just because it lets them kill around and loot the house once again. This is a poor quality product and this is most definitely not art. generic teenager level writing, hastily made soulless art, choppy loading screens eveywhere. Fallout 4 pew-pew, but with sponge, Inon Zur forgot he needs to write something new and just continues his Fallout 4 thing. It's like you are in the center of Boston again. HDR? DLSS? FOV slider? Can we at least calibrate brightness and contrast to get rid of this atrocious washed out unbalanced levels and color balance? Full screen menus everywhere, chopping the experience. Space exploration? The game literally forces your ship to stay in one place in space. No seamless landing? It's ok. But you cant even fly to another side of the planet. It's a backdrop with a menu. Please don't tell me how good the factions are, and how diverse and creative cities are. Because in 5 hours i've seen zero originality. The game is a soulless husk.
Again 5 hours isn’t enough. 5 hours isn’t enough for Skyrim or fallout 4 and you said you played them as well. Completely counter intuitive to your point. Also the DLSS is because they have a deal with AMD which is shit but it’s business and most people also don’t have 40 series to truly take advantage of that
@@neolynxer can't say I disagree with any of this...plot twist...todd is in his own 'real life' faction of brotherhoods (11/11 :)....this game is designed to keep us 'useless eaters' occupied...distracted...whilst the 'takeover' slowly is implemented...and we'll 'own nothing and be happy' haha
@@robinaart72 i am aware sheeperson. I just can't be bothered to fight for my freedom only to die. I don't have resources and lifespan for the fight. I'm no old money and not a tech billionaire. But being a sheep, i want to consume good products. Thankfully, for now, we can chose. And no amount of propaganda will make me pay for bad product.
💥💥 I'll take sci-fi space exploration over fantasy genre any day. I'm not into stuff like Harry Potter or Lord of the rings any of that wizardry bull crap.
cool
Love the game i get very lost in it.....but yea the dev/publishers need to stop over hyping games. Its a Bethesda games of course im go get lost in it. It's a new ip so ill give them a past on this. Why? IM A SPACE NERD.....knowing that you can't really fly in space..
FIRST :) Nice video.
The game has a rough start but gets way better the more you put into it
I've put about 30 hours into it and have finally decided to stop playing. My enjoyment declined slowly over those 30 hours to the point where I had no ambition to open the game. I'd open it and play for 15 minutes and get bored. It's sad, I'm bummed that I don't connect with it because I really wanted to enjoy it.
The only real thing I can thank Bethesda for is the game engine used to make Fallout New Vegas lol
And even then they deliberately crippled the team.
I have to be honest. Bethesda has had a pretty rocky track record, particularly after Skyrim. My expectations were not particularly high, I didn't take most of what Todd had claimed very seriously (this is Todd Howard after all) and after Fallout 4 and 76 and returning to Fallout 3, I don't have high expectations for Bethesda as a whole. To be as blunt as I can. This game doesn't seem like much of a step up from Fallout 4 especially in the narrative and RPG elements. The exploration is not very good most of the procedural generation is limited and you'll find similar environments and locations often pretty early on. There are 4 pillars this game has and it REALLY needed to knock at least one of them out of the park. The story/narrative, the RPG elements, the exploration, and the combat. Unfortunately, the game does all of these decently well but doesn't do any of them great. This game does seem like a step up from Fallout 4 but not by very much. These can be fixed with updates and additional content. It's good but not great. And for Bethesda who have been stuck in a loop for a very long time, this game doesn't break the loop.
I look forward to playing this game. Not a day one for me I’ll wait once all the bugs are ironed out.
@@justvalerie7144 exactly! Ignore this negative prick.
the game is beautiful? it looks no better than skyrim
You haven’t played the game then. It’s visually stunning. Stop trying to find something wrong that doesn’t exist

BSG😂
Yeah realised after the upload
It's funny af that xbots thought this would be goty 😂
It's a flop
perfomance on pc is trash barely hitting 30 fps 1080p 50% res while i can run baldur gate 3 max settings 60 fps just fine with much better graphics than starfield
bro that’s your pc not the game. lower your settings instead of trying to make it out like that’s what it’s like for everyone
@@Exiled7 it lags and stutters even with a 6750 xt but don't worry yall gonna find out soon enough
its a covid work from home game lmao
ultra based this game is trash literally fallout 3 is better and about exploration it's not 100% explorable you just explore little boxes randomly generated that are 100% of the time just empty with 2 or 3 outpost to loot that all look alike ain't nothing to explore
Any “review” under 20 hours for this game is crap. Between the main story and factions, you seriously shouldn’t review this until AT LEAST 60 hours in.
It’s not even a review, it’s a first impressions. Also if you go by what most say of this game you need to play way more than just 60 hours of the game before doing reviews. Hence why almost every video you’ve seen about it says first impressions
Did you miss the FIRST IMPRESSIONS in the title bro?
