Immersion Matters in Video Games

- Have you ever felt that realisation of “oh yeah I’m playing a game?” Or the more common trope of hours going by in something that felt like only 1. Well this would be Immersion at work. For me the most predominant way of this happening was when I would play skyrim and you are walking around in the hill towards Riften and have the amazing sound track of the game playing in the background to only then remember that you are sat in your room, looking into a screen, playing the same game for the last decade. I’ve had this happen plenty of times but I find it really interesting how a lot of people in our modern day gaming don’t think immersion is an important thing or at least find the idea funny.

Don't forget dishonored, I felt like a merciless assassin on a mission to kill those that betrayed me.
Yeah Dishonored is an amazing game in this regard!
This is what I felt when I played the Arkham series. It may seem “cliché” but it actually did make me feel like batman. Arkham asylum making me feel like the predator in the room. Arkham city making me feel like a hero in how I’m the sole person in the warzone that is Arkham City. And Arkham Knight making me feel like Batman in the way that I survey and demilitarize Gotham from the militia.
Not to mention how it feels to bring in Batman’s rogues 1 by 1 to GCPD.
exactly what i felt the lack of immersion when i've played AC odyessy ,the game is really fun to play ,but i keep asking my self what if they add this or that ,it would be amazing and will give us a full experince playing Odyssy ,and i still thinking if they add just a littel more immersion for this game ,i think it would be great or maybe one of the best AC ,so yes immersion is very important.
Odyssey is honestly insanely boring
Felt like That with Vahalla Loads of potential with that.
@@John-996 valhalla is like odyssey it gives me this extremely shallow and empty feeling not even halfway through game, it sucks. Ubisoft is really bad at making an interesting immersive open world that doesnt become dull or feels shallow and repetitive
The main story & side quests of Odyssey were boring grind fest. On the other hand I loved grinding in bloodborne, Witcher 3 & RDR2. Played 4 hrs of odyssey on game pass & deleted without thinking twice.
I actually felt immersed by Odyssey, the lore and NPCs as well as the environment made me feel as if I'm living in ancient Greece.
I think Odyssey has problems but immersion for me is not one of them.
Witcher 3 had this effect on me. Elden Ring too. Hours just fly by 😄
Has to be Kingdom come, RDR2 and Witcher 3 Only games were I got lost in their Worlds and forgot I was playing a game. Bloodbourne for me was more immersive than Elden Ring Which for some reason Felt like I was playing game.
I'll add dying light also.
I 100% agree with you here & let me tell you the one thing that destroys immersion for me.... the battle pass... knowing I'm grinding towards that next level always just makes me feel... ugh & not wanna get into the world.
Metro franchise.. yes
Congrats on 10k!🥳🎉🎊
love your videos, keep up the good content!
Grand Theft Auto 4 specifically holds the crown for me personally as the most immersive game I have played.
i feel like i’m taking crazy pills every time i see that witcher 3 clip of you riding the horse into novigrad. hah
Prince of Persia Warrior within has this 💪😁
"I am the architect of my own destruction"
such a legendary line and game. Nice to see my favorite get some love from others
Crazy enough, Warrior Within (or the whole trilogy) caused my most emotional gaming moment... but in another game.
Mass Effect 3: When Tali came back to the picture, rush to the girl, little side quests be damned. And at the end of that questline couldn't get the best choice... was contemplating savescumming and grinding up for that reputation-check. But that's an option for me the player, but not the character... "What is written in the timeline cannot be changed". Pop wasn't my favorite games for over a decade for me to spit it's message in the eye, so soldier up and carry that weight. It was epic.
Ohh, when I tried to approximate a realistic sleep-pattern in Cyberpunk even before noticing sleeping gave me a buff... good times, just to recall the most recent.
One of the most immersive games I've played are the Metro series. I used to think that the best examples of immersive games are open world games until I realize that a larger but empty world (unless its intentional) would be antithesis to immersion.
Same with the dishonored series and dying light.
I initially hated RDR2 because of its slow gameplay, it felt like the devs intentionally made everything take time just because. But the more I got into it the more I became immersed. It became an incredible experience. I remember just going into some little town, finding the SECOND, much smaller and crappier tavern (the one with much less people), and I just sat there for a while listening to the ambience.
I did stop looting bodies pretty early on because there's no interesting loot to be gained, just money and junk and ammo. To me immersion is one of the most important aspects of video games. Thats one of the reasons I dont really like games like Devil May Cry, where after beating a "map" you get scores and stars and all that which is very immersion breaking.
I wish you'd have mentioned the Metro series.
I just bought Sniper Contract 2, passed 8 hours in the second mission, only fulfilled 3 of the 6 objectives and killed one secondary target... I have a thermos of coffee on my desk. XD
I would play a game and play a soundtrack from another piece of media while playing the game to enhance the experience. For example, playing rdr 2 and playing a contemplative track while walking slowly around camp.
It's so sad that developers don't pay more attention to immersion,I should say AAA developers don't.
I think I've heard you say you hadn't played ghost of tsushima much...but ya need too...nails immersion in a way that no other game has ever done
Yeah its the next game on my list to play after the next couple of video essays. So you should be getting my thoughts on the game in the next 3 to 4 months!
@Exiled I'm not saying it's the most immersion of all time but it does it in a unique way that I think you would appreciate
I don’t think it’s as good as your making it out to be
@@acest2098 it really wasn’t
@Aces T thats luaghable. First off I wasn't even making it out to be as good as it really is and secondly have you even played it?. It's one of the best games of the ps4 era. And thats not just my opinion
I would start elden ring at 10pm with my friends in a party playing too. It would feel like an hour went by and it was already 2am 😂
The civilization games but thats a different thing
Bloodborne did it for me… ❤️
That song you were playing in the background, when I hear it my brain adds the lyrics
🎶 and may all other nations be forgot and death to all mankind.
And may all other nations be forgot and death to all mankind.🎶
Congratulations you will never be able to hear that song again without hearing that. Listen to it and then tell me you don't. :)
I'll refrain from doing so 😂
I know this game gets killed but In todays state on series X. Cyber punk does that for me. I just get lost looking at random shit. Wondering why things in this society are like that. Just goin on and on driving around enjoying the drive from mission point to mission point. Getting random calls on my phone. Every now and then a lil text from panam. Like I just feel like V living in that world.
How come Arkham City was the example and not Arkham Asylum?
To me, immersion is THE most important part of making a game, and every mechanic, story, objective, and basically nearly every component in the game should be designed with immersion in mind! Playing a game is about trying to have fun while passing time and escaping from reality for a bit, if you're not immersed then what's the point?
I’m trying to picture someone using the word “immersive” to describe an arcade game without sounding like a pretentious clown.
This is an alarming sign there are developers who value gameplay less than cinematics.
Fallout new Vegas is immersive af until the game crashes
You're misconstruing engagement as immersion.
The big problem with the idea of immersion is when people complain about details that "break immersion". As you so perfectly demonstrated at the beginning of the video, any game experience is surrounded by immersion breaking factors, but we choose to ignore them. So when people complain about small details being immersion breaking, all they're complaining about is their lack of ability to ignore them.
But again, none of that matters, because what you're really talking about is engagement. The game experiences are engaging in some way or another, but they're not immersive. Because the realities of playing a game and all the conceits made to create an engaging game experience makes it impossible for that experience to truly be immersive.
Who tf thinks that immersion isn't important in games? Haven't heard that shit before lol
The point is towards how a lot of companies release trash that isn't actually trying to tap into any form of immersing the player and instead just tries to rinse the wallet. And for creators most only ever talk about the on the surface mechanics but don't talk about how they all add together to make you immersed.
@@Exiled7 so the companies don't think immersion matters in their games?? Whut
@@Exiled7 well you got ea & ubisoft for that, and that's fine. If they wanna make trash games, fvck em. I dunno about the creator side but all the ones I subscribe to say plenty when it comes to immersion.
And you won't hear. It's more of a read between the lines, and understand what's not being mentioned implies.
'Cause immersion is hard, requires passion for the craft. More games as art than games as industry, which is why the latter tries to drive engagement and ultimately revenue by other more massproducable stuff.
Lootboxes, hundreds of soulless side quest, bragging about hours to complete and map size etc.
Here's a novel idea. Use different music in your videos
The irony of a video about immersion in games showing witcher 3 game play with the mini map active 🫣😬
Pretty sure I played it with the mini map on and I was immersed like crazy 🤔🤔
Skyrim is the GOAT
Assassin's creed games after black flag is a joke
Not really, Unity, Syndicate and Origins were amazing.
