Anti Social Media
The main reason I don't like social media. What do you think? Do you agree with me or not?
I noticed a few years ago that on Facebook I was doing complicated calculations like:
Do I actually like this post? Yes/No
Do I want the person to know I like their post? Yes/No
Do I want other people to know I like this person's post? Yes/No
Do I want to see more from this person?
Do I want Facebook to know that I like this?
etc. so what looks like a simple gesture actually involves complex calculations.
The thing that really drives me nuts, as you saw in this rant of a video is thinking about the reasons people post to social media. Of course we're drawn to the dopamine spikes we get when our posts get likes and comments, this leads us to post more and more engaging content. This is just what the platforms want us to do but I argue it's disadvantageous to our social lives and to our lives period. If you always have that process running in the background searching out the perfect photo or the right moment, how do you ever live in the moment?

How to Film in the Ultraviolet

Filming in UV requires removing a filter, getting UV-transparent lenses and getting a good filter to block all other light. I got my hot mirror removed here: ve42.co/UVcam That is an affiliate link so by ordering through the link, LifePixel will give a commission back to me. If you don't want that, just use a different link. I've always been fascinated to film in the UV because it reveals to us...
How Earth Creates Its Magnetic Field

How turbulent convection currents in Earth's outer core make its magnetic field This video is a prequel to one that will appear here: ve42.co/Spin Huge thank you to Prof. Jon Aurnou who spent a lot of time explaining how planetary magnetic fields are created. The Climbing Magnets Mystery (ft. Steve Mould)

When spun on a screwdriver, magnets climb up its length, but why? This video brought to you by my friend Steve Mould: ve42.co/SteveMould This all started with a question on twitter, when someone wanted to know why a chain of neodymium magnets climbs up a screwdriver when the screwdriver is rotated. A search for the explanation ensued, culminating in the stick-slip conclusion presented in this v...

Why YouTube Used to Prefer Quality
zhlédnutí 782KPřed 6 lety
Almost four years ago I made a video about quality vs quantity on CZcams. Reflecting on how the platform is working in 2017 I find that quantity (frequency) has become significantly more important and quality less so. I'm not saying this is my recommendation for how people should make channels, just that this is what seems to be an effective strategy nowadays. This video involves two distinct s...

A couple of comments. First, a very well put-together video and a highly relevant topic. I'm a big fan of yours and agree with nearly everything you said. Much of what you said towards the end of the video can be further pursued by researching "attribution theory". However, I'm not completely in agreement that those who are better off are the ones who set the rules--at least not wholescale. In our democracy, a poor person's vote counts just as much as a rich person's vote, so if the poor people outnumber the rich people, rules will get enacted that attempt to move money from the rich and towards the poor (regardless of the deservedness or undeservedness for a person's particular economic situation). I think our graduated tax system takes into account both the "effort" component to one's economic fate, and the "luck" component. It gets tweaked when the numbers in each group shifts over time.

Fun fact: It's standing spherical acoustical waves
Seems reasonable to me. Nice video.
mass is energy but it also change itself in respect to speed in its elementary particles
the casual spin diagram on the side as he talks about electronics is quite a thing.
when the earth stops spinning one day, we will call upon this man to help jump start it again. protect him.
🎉😂😂
Great❤
“If you have a magnetic field and then you stretch a magnetic field then you get a magnetic field” You have explained nothing man- you were supposed to tell us how we get the magnetic field in the first place. I already know the answer so I know where to fill in the gaps you left but that was terrible.
India is not for beginners 😂
Moving charges ' Orbiting the sun! without the sun the earth would have no field.
👍
1:05 Thank you for this. As an aspiring physicist I think now I can finally sleep at night knowing there's nothing more to understand about this topic than what is already known.
It explained my self rotating stick
This guy is a fake. He has very little idea how a mos transistor works.
'Spin' is like the manner in which a thing will orientate itself without any external influence acting upon it other than the field/medium from which it is manifest from. Think of the geometries of the platonic solids... Now if you were to have one of these solids in the form of a hollow plastic object and you were to throw it in a bucket of water, if it were a triangular prism it would want to float (orientate) itself with a point facing downwards. This is its preferred natural orientation. When it is a component of a larger thing its orientation may be forced to be different to that of its natural orientation, this 'spin' is a representation of the 'resistance' to the forced orientation it is held in and the tendancy of it to revert back to natural orientation if the influence upon it is removed.
Do you think when the elections position are different from one another which is up down and down up string theory comes to play? Just asking
It looks this man has made electronics with his hands❤
why am i so skeptical? the movement of small particles in the earth’s core are coordinated to the point you can find the magnetic poles anywhere on the surface? idk bro
The copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics is such bullshit. Just bc we stop being able to observe what's happening at such small scales doesn't mean the universe suddenly stops being deterministic
Maybe it's not spinning like a top but how can you get angular momentum without motion
You can spin some things and not create magnetic fields while spinning other things does create magnetic fields.
That's great info!! Nice representation of the dynamics. Thank you.
Wonderful
Thank you for explaining it thoroughly…i’m no expert with equations but the theoretical explanation was wonderful…i was always dumbfounded what spin really is…because yeah i was thinking of something rotating on its own axis when in fact its actually weirder lol…
Some nay we've been extremely lucky to avoid an atomic war and there were so many "close calls" but I think it's not the case, since we couldn't ask ourselves the question if such escalation came. If we look at it as an experiment repeated multiple times, we will find out that there would be few people or none at all surviving a global atomic war. Therefore they should consider themselves "lucky". In few scenarios with a happy ending there are far more alive people than in overall sum of scenarios with almost everyone dying.
literally nobody makes me feel more understood than this guy <3

My philosophy as a mother was that I was not my children's entertainment secretary. If they were bored they would learn to entertain themselves. Of course, that strategy worked partly because we didn't have aTV and video games were limited, but I am still an advocate of an environment with occasional boredom and lots of books.
