    I prefer the casual style of this video. It's like you're talking directly to us, which makes it feel intimate. I also like seeing the city you're in (Amsterdam, right?) and your handsome face. But the animations in the other video do make the actual topic somewhat easier to understand. Perhaps a mixture of the two would be best, basically this video interspersed with occasional graphics to demonstrate the important points. No music either; it's a bit distracting. I guess the animation is better for drawing in new viewers though. Whatever you decide, I'll keep watching. :)

    I did watch both videos, and while I feel the animated version is better at getting the point across from an educational standpoint, this version felt more like a conversation; it felt as though we were engaged in a discussion. Because of this, this video triggered different thoughts and opinions in my own mind, furthering my understanding. this one is particularly nice because you did it all in one take, almost like you're rehearsing (what you said in both videos is almost exactly the same) and this brings warmth to the way it's being presented. As if you're story telling.
    Visuals on the other video make it seem more scientific rather than a story, it also helps a bit to stay focused and not sidetracked by thoughts (or pedestrians in this video).

    Hi Derek. As a long time viewer, I enjoy both versions. In general I think the animated video is more approachable to an outsider and thus better introduction content. The first person camera has an amazing intimacy for a subscriber, and you can convey much more subtle / precise ideas, which add a lot of value for me. Overall, I think the two channel approach is great, especially when each is optimized for its purpose. Best, --A

  • @MrWorth66
    @MrWorth66 Před 7 lety +4

    i think the animated version is better for people unfamiliar with science, it feels almost like it it is aimed at children. the animations demonstrate what your saying exactly and leave no room for the viewer's mind to further think on the topic, you force the viewer to think and interpret the words in only one way. that being said i like the vlog style better because it doesn't feel like im being talked down to, like we are having a conversation. it allows me to explore what you are saying in my imagination and i can bring my own understanding to the subject. the visuals have nothing to do with the topic and frees the brain to only concentrate on one input, sound, your words.

    This was kinda easy story to follow so casual way isn't too bad.. Like when you told that war plane example in other casual video. When things get more complicated the animation is the better way.

But as a long time fan, I enjoyed the scenery and the thoughts of your lifestyle that this video evoked. And perhaps most of all, I was impressed by your delivery of the whole lesson, presumably without a prompter or cue cards. I know its just six minutes, but still. There was no hesitation, shuffling of the order, misquoting of dates, etc. Maybe you had at least an outline in your right hand with the camera. Yeah, that would make me feel a little better! :-)

    Thanks Derek. I enjoyed both, but for me the non-animated one is best; It's more personal and more real-world, especially if you're gone through all the trouble, cost and extent to travel to a location pertinent to the topic. Additionally, the location shots are highly interesting and culturally informative even though it's "background". A cool snapshot of "a moment in the life of...". Further, there are so many animated videos that, to me, they seem get lost among each other. I do however appreciate the animations created for the previous videos on fields. Those, to me help convey more useful information about the topic.

    I like both of your channels. It seems to me that for topics where you tell a story or speculate on things, the "walking" style suits better. When you explain things, graphics help a lot, making things easier to understand. I watched this first, and am now making my way through the animated one. Already a minute in I feel like this off the cuff version conveys more of the minutia surrounding each point in the story, projecting a broader picture - giving my mind hooks to grab on to which lets me follow along a lot more easily in the story. I have always preferred teachers to books, I feel like text - even if it's read out loud - can't convey thoughts and ideas as well as intonation, tangents, body language and other subtleties of speech and conversation can.

  • @playingshadows123

    The editing, little jokes in the visuals and extra information in the animated video was helpful to stay focused and absorb the information better. But the rhythm of speech in this video also helped in absorbing the info, whereas the animation in the other one made it possible to pack more words per minute of video. I also liked looking at the surroundings of the place that you were walking through when you were speaking.

    I actually really enjoyed seeing both videos. I don't really have one that I prefer, but I reckon the first one will be taken more seriously. You can see there was put a lot of effort in it, not only the visuals but you also recognize the fact you had to find lots of information to make it. This video (without the first one) might seem like you're just walking around and happened to discus about something that was in your mind.
    Anyway, very interesting videos!
    Also, if you read this, how is your "policy" on people approaching you? I know that if I see Grey I will just have to pretend to not have seen him and continue with my life, Brady I can maybe talk with if he has the time, at least shake his hand and tell him I appreciate his work, but I'm not sure about you. As you're in my country now, this question just hit me. :)

    I watched both, and while I normally almost prefer these casual walking videos, I actually found the animated version easier to follow and understand. I found it much easier to absorb and I could probably teach what I learned to others. Not in FULL detail of course, but I could probably teach more of what I learned from the animated version than from this non-animated version because I have visuals that went along with everything. With this walking video, I have distractions due to all of the interesting things to look at.
    So I think that these more casual walking videos should be reserved for when you're just kinda speaking from the heart and the animated stuff like the video on your main channel should be reserved for when you have something prepared. When you're speaking more from the heart, I don't find the stuff around you to be distracting. Instead, I can find myself looking at the things around you while my mind is totally focused on what you're saying. With this particular video though, it was a prepared lesson and so I think these are best with some sort of visual aids like in the animated version.

  • @HeavySpiral
    @HeavySpiral Před 7 lety

    The Animated version is easier for various reasons, one of them being cleaner sound (which makes listening to it almost effortless and there is no strain, like trying to focus on the sound of a voice while ignoring the sounds from the environment, which we are good at but still it puts some strain) another one is the idea of cartoons and animation which makes is that much easier to digest since we have grown up with cartoons and it has a certain element in it an element that makes you enjoy it more. So in sort, one is more human like (most people can relate to it as it is everyday like) while the other one is trimmed and neat. One presents a more down to earth scientist that looks approachable while the other ones gives the idea of a more serious and respected scientist and quality work (as ideas are easier presentable with animations much like the TED ed videos) also let's not forget that in this video the viewer can feel like having a conversation with you while the other one lacks a "face".

      I think there already is a really good solution.
      For scientific use there's the Kelvin scale. 0°K is the physically coldest possible temperature.
      For daily use there's the Celsius scale. It's used in most of the world and 0°C matches the freezing point of water (at a specific altitude) and 100°C matches the boiling point of water (at a specific altitude, too).
      Of course it's arbitrary. Like all our measurement units. It's a question of how easy you can convert between them.

    • @naota3k

    I prefer this kind of videos than the animated ones. These are original. Animated videos are all over CZcams. Plus, you walk in such beautiful places.

    I like this one better, there's so many animated educational videos on youtube, then can just blend together. adding a element of humanity to the videos allows deeper concentration. maybe best of both worlds by putting the scale info graphic over this video?

    Definitely prefer this video. It's more personal, and represents more practice and evolution in the style you've employed for the rest of this channel (as the suggested videos on the side show). Now, are you going to quiz me on my comprehension of the material? ;)

    im a fan of minute physics and enjoy the animation including the little "humorous" bits. As a visual learner it helps to show pieces of info for example the map part of the story

    In terms of educational purpose, animated version is better because it can highlight the key terms. But the walk-and-talk version really gives me the scenery of some countries which I may never visit in my whole live.
    I prefer the animated one as I want to learn some science from your channel. I still enjoy the walk-and-talk one. I think that you may use the walk-and-talk style when you want to speak about your thoughts, feelings or casual ideas.

  • @rodwoodman1223

    IMO, live action walking videos of you work best for your off-the-cuff opinion pieces because they are the most personal. These need the most passion from you or I quickly get distracted by the moving background. The live action standing/studio shots of you work best for explaining nuggets of how things work or the history of things. These feel more like an objective lecture on non-controversial topics, but can also provide emphasis within a more heavily edited video when spliced in-between animated sequences or live action clips of others. And finally, I think that these animated videos are best at explaining the most complicated topics because they are a focused series of drawings. They are also the easiest way to add more humor to your videos. Great videos. Keep experimenting.

    The question is hard. Having seen the animated version first, I think that I caught the information better with it, then the repeat on a more informal way was a very good nailing of the knowledge. I'm not at all sure I would have recalled more by inverting the order.
    So for educative purpose, the animated was better, but for edutainment, I would prefer the second one.

  • @fordsfords
    @fordsfords Před 7 lety

    For most of the animated video, I don't feel that the animation added much of concrete value. However, it did help when you spoke of dividing the scale in half, half again, and half again. Visually seeing it animated helped. But I also feel that one human talking to another has a powerful effect on teaching. The best videos combine the two, using animation (sparingly) to illustrate a concept that is better communicated visually than verbally, but relying on eye contact and gestures for most of the explanation.

  • @Droideka30

    I think animation or your standard talking head + animated or live visuals is a better style for the more sciencey videos. The "walking through a place" style works great for your "thoughts on a thing" videos, and works decently well for this video, since the subject is more of a story and not very technical.

  • @Baron_Alexander_Renfield

    Odd but I liked the vlog approach more then the animated one. I found it less distracting and easier to concentrate on the information. I find myself more involved because I have to do the work to make sure that I follow you (perhaps in general but definitely as a non-native speaker). Would be interesting though if the preferences would correspond with a better intake (thinking of your disseration).

    Perhaps the unit was changed as a means of adaptability considering that the temperature of the human body and it's freezing point seem to be different everywhere; maybe they calculated somewhat of an average or a best fitted zero point for use on a global scale.

  • @cloverhighfive

    Even if I like this format, I'm realizing that even though I've seen the animated one, I have a hard time following you in this one. I phase out easily, it all becomes noise at some point, it requires a lot of effort on my part to concentrate on what you say. I guess it explains why I had such a hard time in science classes - without pictures, my brain just goes lalala... (but I'm good with philosophy though, so all your walky-talky about bias and things are ok for me)
