Be hated not just for the sake of it but because there are people worth disagreeing with. If you're not upsetting them, you're doing it wrong.
Hate is a strong word...
Bingo on "feeding the trolls". I'm always being told not to bother talking to people who disagree, but as you say, there are occasionally those that will change their minds - or at least have discussions with an open mind. It's usually fairly clear within a few replies which people are open to discussion and which aren't even properly reading your responses, so best to concentrate on the former.
You can spread a message or an idea, but you can't make everyone listen to or accept it. I think it's best to focus on those that will at least discuss things WITH you (regardless of whether they agree or not) rather than simply talk AT you.
Im sorry to go completely off topic for a second, but what city is this? Looks really lively and nice!. But yeah i often find myself not daring to be hated enough, quietly surrendering to the other opinion, no matter how wrong. I want to change that.

2020 & 2021 have marked the beginnings and ends of me no longer physically interacting with other human beings, face to face.

In fact, message-based conversations can allow for much more discomfort than face-to-face because you can answer in your own time, rather than being on the spot and reacting in a way that derails the conversation. (That being said, it sounds like you should get out more ;)

I was one of the folks who asked about volcanoes and I don't claim to be dull or ignorant. Luckily there were many people who took the time to have a conversation about it in the comments, and I learned something (many something). So, there... it was of benefit to me and I didn't unsubscribe...

The truth does not change based on people’s opinions. Unfortunately, it would seem the peoples opinions do not change based on the truth, either.
Making it easier to admit you're wrong is a corner stone to informing people. It's tricky, and it essentially means you get no intellectual pride for being correct, but none of that matters if you're educating. Being right doesn't feel nearly as good as gaining an ally in information ;)
ignorant is not an insult it does not mean stupid and people who take it as an insult are stupid. Someone who is trying to educate someone who is lacking information on a topic and tells them that they are ignorant is literally telling them that they lack information. I know only one persuasion of people who view ignorant as an insult.

I really don't understand why there is such a big section of the public that don't believe in man made climate change. Why are people so emotive and opinionated about this one particular scientific fact? Popular opinion does not change reality. Leave the science to the scientists and not us lot (the public).
It's why the infamous Al Gore movie was called 'the inconvenient truth', it's an issue of convenience. Notice no one has problems with science or scientific theories until something like climate change or evolution. Why? Because suddenly it's inconvenient. Suddenly it's against your religious beliefs, or with global warming it's going to increase the price of gas for your car. As soon as there's a 'cost' introduced, there's backlash and folks in general don't want to pay or change. No one questions the scientific process or it's conclusions, until somehow it might effect them in a negative way (HD TVs, better smaller phones great, expensive gas bad) even if the scientists and the process are the same.

12tman12 Let us not forget that according to most mainstream religious beliefs in the western world, the end of civilization hails the second coming, so is it not something to be desired rather than fought against? On a (sometimes) subconscious level any religious person would see a silver lining to an extinction event befalling the world. Calling a spade a spade instigates a "righteous" bout of self delusion, on those who have been taught to call a spade "redemption" through the power of authority and/or revelation.
Many people used global warming in their politics, and they had an agenda. Global warming is real, but remember how Al Gore said the ice caps would be melted (don't remember if he said completely) by 2014? Yeah that didn't happen lol.
It's kind of easy to see why some people still think it's all bs. So many lies and/or false predictions.
Because the few that spread this misinformation have other intere$t$ and rather have the people tamed like sheep.

I'm so glad you've reached out and tried to engage those whose limited scope leads them to scorn before internal reflection. I think it shows that the biggest problems we can have in science is simply understanding each other without disliking each other because of our views. Please keep up the brilliant videos :)
It's because of videos like these that Derek is by far my favorite producer of educational content on CZcams. I don't know many other scientific communicator youtubers that produce content of such a high standard, but are still not afraid to voice their own opinions, regardless of whether or not they is contentious. Keep up the good work Derek, I'm sure it won't be long before the climate change deniers start giving in.

Totally agree with this opinion, as a CZcamsr myself I was first saddened to realize that positive comments were so common they had no more positive effects on me, and haters / troll comments started to appear. All new and unseen, they really hurt me at first, and I tried several things (as a good scientist would :P):
- Responding violently: consolidated their thoughts and hate on me -> vicious circle.
- Asking for reasons / justifications: proved that MOST of the haters/trolls have no idea of what your work is about, and thus can't respect it -> their opinion is totally not relevant and does not express truth about you.
- Ignoring: other people would tend to start a conflict and enter the vicious circle -> delete / keep letting go. Their opinion does NOT reflect the reality of things and you should really take them like that.
Justified criticism needs to be listened to, your viewers have a different point of view from yours and maybe expect something different, always question yourself, that's humility :)
When I make a purely scientific video: people call it boring.
When I make a fun video: people call it stupid.
When I try to mix both: most people are pleased, but still guys arguing that they would like it to be more scientific, or more entertaining.
In short terms:
Remember that for each person that hates you, 1000 more love you.
You will never please and agree with everybody, do what you love for whoever loves what you do.
You're not doing it for the haters, they're not to be given importance to ;)

hm.. maybe you are not familiar with the "statics" behind that. i guess that's a baseline (or intercept) model, which is the simplest model to describe a responsevariable. I guess you were expecting a (linear) regression model, that has an actual "trend" (a normal baseline model also can have a trend, but not in the way you normally use the term trend).
to explain it quick:
if you have y (=temp) and want a linear model you use something like:
y = b0 + b1 * x
x stands for the years. if you don´t use any x you have something like
y = b0
and b0 is a constant, thats why you have that line.
there a many ways to get your b0, and i guess they used a very simple model there, that just takes the latest output and set it to b0.
maybe they did that on purpose (I guess) or maybe that was just the best fitting model. we would have to check the data to find out. ;)
MrVinca I am actually a bit familiar with statistics, bell curves, normal distributions, error bars, error analysis, and such, but the way that it was described was quite funny. Being that It was labelled as The 19 year 'pause' which clearly not the case, I believe that you yourself are either trolling or did not get the joke in the video.

I found the graph confusing and amusing at the same time, had very little information, and can with no doubt be missused (like they did in that article). But the topic of forcing stats and graphs to fit an opinion into someones mind, is another thing I don´t want to go into...
I am too familiar with statistics, as a student of it, but you said the "trend line on the graph", which if they made a correct model, was ture.
Both your channels are great. You are a really good talker, I always learn something new about science or life in general when I watch your videos. Diverse content but relative to us all in some way. Happy holidays and keep posting these videos!!

Fascinating video and good advice. I continue to find myself in these situations where I am on the opposing side of opinions and at first, things seem to me heated, but eventually most people come around and listen to reason. I know that this is not always the case when dealing with individuals on the web, it seems that everyone has their resources and believe that they are right 100% of the time (or at least that is how they will play it off) and in these situations, I see no problem in being hated. If you are ruffling feathers than your message is being heard. Continue the good work and I will continue to support your channel.

If what you present is incorrect, and the challenge gets me interested in the data enough to defend my interpretation, then that offense refines my belief.

The problem is what's cherished by most of us : individuality. We don't think as a race but as individual cells wanting to become a full fledged organism for themselves. Once we acknowledge that the way forward is to see every specimen of us as another cell in a larger organism trying to achieve a common goal, humanity's saved.
When commenting people always take everything personal. Someone else's views don't align with yours? Then they must be wrong and either group forming starts (which is never good) or people are driven into solitary with their opinions pinned on them as individual burdens. We're way more than that. Alas, you cannot blame someone for speaking their mind, getting burned and never try again, leaving the rest in blissful ignorance.
***** : Plus, ofcourse, everything every living organism is made out of. We tend to forget that cooperation of individual cells is what allows us to be organisms. Somehow we cannot surpass the logical cooperation of the building blocks we're made from.

If you're hated by people who are seeking power and money, because you exposed them and/or dismantled their criminal enterprise. Then yeah, be hated.
But if you're hated because YOU want power and money and you're destroying other people's lives because of your greed. Then YOU are the problem in the world.

Very well said. I realize (and I'm sure you more than realize too) that the moment you comment or respond to someone in the CZcams comments or real life... you make waves. Those waves are always volatile, because there will be people who will even respond negatively about THIS non-science video which I thought was very respectful and thought out.
Some people genuinely disagree while keeping an open mind, some people already have the answer before even understanding the question, some people are just always argumentative, and a few are "trolls" that doesn't realize their jokes don't come off as anti-humor or funny, but rather hurtful to the human reading on the other end, especially when the creator of content is reading the responses to something they put hours and lots of thought into creating. The anonymity the internet provides, allows people to state their opinion in a polarizing manner without a filter. It's admirable to engage your users in the comments... just don't let the raw hate tear you down.

I strongly resonate with every word of this video. Sorry for not hating you :) But now I want to advocate the other side of the story. As you mentioned: "as far as possible, without surrender, be in good terms with all persons". This is incredibly important because it helps you enormously in getting your message across, as long as you are sincere and intellectually honest. I am deliberately engaging in conversations on climate change in channels run by deniers. When replying to angry, inaccurate messages, if you stay factual, objective, sincere, diplomatic, even kind if possible, you interrupt the chain of mutual insults, and you create the best conditions for the truth to emerge. People, try to do the same. It feels great!! Sometimes it is hard not to judge people who deny climate change, because they look so determined to confuse the facts in order to better trash the planet. In my case, it is easy to regain some trust in humans, I just remember of the many times in the past in which I was so passionate about stupid and dangerous theories. I was not a worse person than I am now. I just lacked the skills that I think I developed later, that allow me to think more lucidly, express myself more effectively, and avoid strong opinions on things I do not know enough.
Giancarlo Pace, that's great! The last thing you mentioned especially. In my experience, people could really use the advise to not form very strong opinions on things they don't know enough about.
Also, the first thing I learned in my philosophy class was to always hear your argumentative opponent out, explain your arguments clearly and respectfully (don't start attacking the person), and always be ready to change sides if the other persons arguments are better than yours. Giancarlo Pace, it's interesting that you changed your mind about who to get into an argument with, because I recently came to the same conclusion as you (don't get into arguments with people determined not to change sides). There was a guy in the comment section of another youtube video who thought that space is actually water, that the earth is flat, and that the media is lying to us all, a real nut bag. I spent a good three hours writing a respectful response, explaining my view on the matter, and he ended up just reading the first few rows and laughing at them.
I don't think it's a complete waste of time though. I recently also had a conversation with my friend about immigration. It was a long discussion, but I ended up changing his mind completely, despite him being so sure he was right before. He said he realized how stupid he'd been, believing what his old racist teacher had taught him. Now, he might not have been completely locked into his his side of the argument, but he was at the very least moderately resilient to changing sides. Changing his mind really gave me hope that peoples minds actually can be changed.
The point I'm trying to make is that even though it might sometimes be a waste of energy to get into an argument with someone that has already decided what they believe, when you hit the jackpot and change their mind completely it feels really great, as I'm sure you've experienced. So don't give up completely on changing ignorant people's minds :)

Adelar Scheidt What those vids speak to me is that it is not mandatory for a relationship to go perfectly according to plan for it to work, and also that there is always the real possibility you can end up alone. That makes me value my relationship more and it also eases my anxiety on whether it will work. I just enjoy it more and give it my best.
The School of life? I haven't ever heard of this channel, but if it is anywhere near being as good as Veritasium and Vsauce I'm going to check it out.

Thank you for producing this video, I just discovered your channel and the "distraction economy" video which is also very insightful, I'm based in the UK but I lived in Spain for three years and a lot of my friends in London are from European countries and so when I got into the Brexit debate I got a LOT of criticism from a LOT of people for my views, but I really thought it was very important to say what I believed, and why I believed it, and of course some people agreed with me, other people didn't agree with me but still appreciated that I took the time to articulate my views on my facebook profile. Now I am thinking of getting more involved in politics generally because of how my country has been affected by the referendum and the debate, but I am still worried that I might not be strong enough to stand up to the criticism I know I will face from my friends and family. This has just made that a little bit easier to face. So thank you for that and even when we don't agree on everything, let's each and all of us try to make the world a better place!

There are more of them than I imagined. I haven't ever been so happy. So, thank you, Derek, for your job, for your videos, which can really teach something, make us think, thank, for your ability to speak or listen when other would shout in emotions, and thank to the people who watch these videos
The message is great and I completely agree. For one, you need to have a worldview that isn't so dependent on others that you would change it just because of one public reaction. Large companies can weather storms by ignoring controversy until it goes away (and it usually does). This is a specifically poor example just to illuminate the point that it can also be a bad thing when in the hands of the wrong people.
The asterisk that I would add to the argument is that an expression of one's opinion must be subject to "impact". It is necessary to consider the impact of your words as a function of the goal that you're trying to achieve. What is that goal? Spending 5 years of your life to change the minds of 5 people is wasteful, unless those people themselves have the capacity to influence huge masses. General principles are extremely important to have, but due to the temporal nature of our existence, one must pick and choose their best application and a graceful exit may be necessary at times. If humans lived indefinitely then this would not apply, perhaps.
"Be hated" though, is a different story entirely. I would again amend that with another asterisk, being that the hatred received should be strictly disproportional. In simple words, let crazy people hate you all they want. People who are passionate when it comes to defending their side, but who are also equally logical as you are - should not feel that they need to hate you in order to get their way. If you are inciting feelings of hatred in otherwise rational and emotionally stable people, then there is something wrong with your approach that is unrelated to your argument. Even though the "civil" in "civilization" is a characteristic that is not met in reality as often as would be expected, it's still an important beacon to guide yourself by. Once your audience is infuriated at you - your words will fall on deaf ears. That is the nail in the coffin for arguing.
Finally, that is some fantastic image quality. I was going to ask if you were using the new king of low light - the Sony A7S, but it seems that the 5D MK3 is still a strong performer. :) Thanks for posting!
Remember Darek, you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make it drink. Your treading a thin line between belief and opinion. Opinions can change in the 'blink of an eye' but it takes years to form a belief and longer to dislodge one. My best advice to you is show the proof again and again and again, quit telling people about it, they won't listen. For example, you can tell a child time after time to not touch something because its hot or sharp or anything and they will always have to touch it. Direct evidence will influence a mind far faster then hear-say! Good luck to you.
Pecker Wood I completely agree with what you said but your solution sadly doesn't help in the context of climate change. You're right that people need a proof to maybe change their believes but what makes touching a hot plate so effective is not that it's just a proof but that it's a very unpleasant and painful proof.
In the case of climate change we have proofs but none that will have any major effect on anyone until it's too late to change. As Derek said in one of his videos, people are very bad at thinking globally and there just is no proof that plays on our primitive fears like pain.
The only thing that could help is getting more educated people in positions in which they could actually change something but then again, the people in those positions are already very educated but mostly use their knowledge just for their own benefit..

I like to call it catching fire or taking fire on. There are things which are worth standing even and especially when no one is looking. Another way I look at it is, if its easier for people to hate, which is sad, then go with the flow; I'd let people hate me. To always want to be right or be proven right is a mark of dark tendencies.

Is there any evidence that a large increase in CO2 over 100 years vs 5000 years is somehow more harmful? In what way would it be more harmful? You implied that the earth can adjust if the change is over time? How does the earth adjust? Do Ice caps and glaciers prepare for the CO2? Do they brace themselves so they won't melt?
I am not a climatologist but I do work in economics so I know how devastating to living standards the proposed fixes will be. You are looking at millions of people in 3rd world countries who manged to overcome destitution through development in recent years who are going to be forced right back into extreme poverty by these proposed measures to solve climate change.

Yes there is a lot of evidence, if you have access to academic papers just try using google scholar or science direct to search for the one that convince you the most within the literally thousands papers that you can find regarding the impact of a quick increase of Greenhouse Gases (Not just CO2)...
I am not sure how many proposed fixes you have read about but in my line of work and studies (I am an environmental engineer) I have met and discuss with economists different solutions from the socio-economic perspective and they are some viable not "devastating" ones. The problem is that they imply big changes and the support of new systems and technologies that are not currently embedded in the system yet... Another recurrent problem is that most of the "Developed" countries actually need a "developing" country to do the cheap, non-responsible work for them so that they can keep their current unsustainable way of living.
Anyway... there are a lot of problems but a lot of proposed solutions as well, some of them really complex but not impossible, and I mean climate change is happening, and we will have to deal with it and adapt sooner or later, better to be prepared and try to mitigate it as much as we can... Actually some countries are already dealing with it and trying to adapt, just ask anyone from an island in the Pacific region; Kiribati, Tuvalu, Palau, they surely not appreciate people calling climate change a hoax...

There´s a carbon cycle and CO2 sinks trough carbon sequestration (which you seem to be ignorant of, since than you would have asked about them, not glaciers bracing themselves lol). If you release more into the cycle faster of course it gets out of balance since the natural cycle won´t keep up.

Martin Elizalde Lecuona In my opinion the entire crux of climate change hinges on whether a rapid change is more dangerous than a gradual one. I'm sure you've read about how the cretaceous period had around 6 times as much CO2 as now and it was one of the most biodiverse times in earth's history. So CO2 itself is not bad for life (assuming life is what we care about). Its the rapid change that is supposedly dangerous.
I can see some species being unable to evolve to cope with a rapid change and that would be a fair point. What I don't see is any threat at all to humans. Coastal dwelling people may have to move inland over the coming century but thats not a threat to their lives.
So i'm not at all seeing the justification for this kind of economic damage (and there will be) if the goal is only to attempt to save a few species.
You have to remember that economic harm is often magnified when it reaches the 3rd world. For example a few businesses that shut down in Canada might magnify into 10's of thousands of lost jobs in Indonesia where they had their factories. Not only do the factory workers go back to sustenance farming but the farmers that sold vegetables to those factory workers now also have to go back to sustenance farming. The local Indonesian banks lose the deposits because sustenance farmers don't have bank accounts, and that means those banks can no longer invest in the Indonesian economy to generate more jobs.
Conversations with trolls are not an effective tool to use to educate. Trolls thrive on the fight..not on learning.
However, many people with strong opinions that have constructive criticism are unfairly labeled as trolls. Yes there are the obvious trolls with shitty one liners and obvious flame bait and for those people ignore them or ban them if they are clearly breaking the rules of the forum but other people who are being civil and just discussing their opinion on the matter? Well if you want to listen than listen and if not go do something else, it really is that easy.

Derek im a fan of yours. i want to thank you for many of your videos they inspire me in a lot of ways to do more things, and affecting people in a good way (forgive me for my bad english). im doing exactly what you're doing, im trying to teach my friends about science (especially physics since i like it). now im in a point that there's something that bother me about my school. you know in my country (Indonesia) there's an event in almost every school that the 1st year kid will get into some kinda millitary training but worse. and the school approve this event, even the school make it into an annual program. so the event is like you'll get yelled by your senior (2nd or 3rd year student) for almost no reason and there's no way to argue or deny them. and in my year we got only about 3 liter of water for 360 ppl a day. this event go on for 3 days. they said this is to increase the solidarity among the student, using the theory about having the same enemy. this is insane..., now ive talked to any ppl that might be responsible for this but there's nothing change... i bring some fact about how punishment wont work to teach ppl, i bring the fact of lack of water will make ppl have hard time to get concentrated to something. i bring the fact about how these method almost never work...
they just wont change... I dont know what to do anymore...

"Be hated" is really more of a cop out. It is one way of dealing with the fact that your attempt at communication and/or persuasion has failed. Those who will not be assimilated, or at least remain docile, are beyond the pale and are evil and good to be hated by. That's why so much of this video monologue is about "those people" and "them", the people that "be hated" invites you to dismiss with your own brand of contempt. This reaction is very natural, but it isn't very mature. "Being hated" is most definitely a sign of actual failure and it is not a cause for joy. On the other hand, it's a failure you simply have to accept as the relative limits of the two minds involved. No effort at mass communication is ever going to be completely successful. So you accept "being hated" as a lamentable consequence of trying and failing, not as a badge of being so convinced you are right while so many others are so wrong.
And I think you did a very good job of trying to get your ideas across in the GW video, especially give what a noisy issue it is.

I watch your shows not for what you think, but for what you demonstrate scientifically. The problem with theories behind 'significant human induced climate change' is that they are not based in science, but in extreme speculation. Don't get me wrong, science requires extreme speculation as a starting point, yet when a particular point is thoroughly disproved, that point needs to be thrown-out. Many of the extremely speculative and foundational points of such climate change have been redundantly disproved. I was upset about your Climate Change video because you failed to provide evidence while speaking as if you had.
My bet is you haven't looked at the science because there is a lot of evidence there. Just look at NASA's climate page for one: climate.nasa.gov
I didn't present evidence in the climate change video because I thought it was well known and well accepted. Now I realize I do need to present the evidence. But I'm also asking you to do your part and seek it out. Sea levels are rising, land ice in Antartica and Greenland is melting, sea ice in the arctic is melting, glaciers are receding, the atmosphere is more moist, the warming is greater around the Earth than in the stratosphere, and CO2 and temperatures are rising.
Veritasium I think part of the problem lies in those people that you mentioned in the video (unsubscribers who failed to listen fairly to what you said) consider researching the topic a form of support. Some people are so set in their beliefs that they wouldn't think of researching climate change just as they wouldn't think of researching a correlation between a decrease in pirates and an increase in population. If changing their point of view wouldn't benefit them in any way and might make them seem less intelligent for even giving the other side some time to speak, then they're not gonna do it.
That, I think, is a good enough reason to provide a video that will (hopefully fairly) represent the evidence in a sit back and listen format, instead of active research.

Regardless, I do believe that the climate is changing. It always is since the earth, sun and moon are a non-static system.
I have yet to see any convincing evidence that humans have a significant effect on the earth's climate.

This is the single best "response" video I have ever seen. I actually I think you articulated your point beautifully, and (in a literal sense) poetically. If I could subscribe to you harder I totally hold. Maybe if I hold the button down? This is whole premise shady. The implication is that people who disagree "hate" you is suspicious at best. More likely you are seeing heterogeneous [fixed] response; some effects of the Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory, some sycophants, some strong disagreement.
But this makes it sound like anyone who disagrees is hateful, and by extension, irrational.

The galactic interwebz is a locus for vitriol and hyperbole. People overstate constantly, and some go straight for the gutter. I think it's safe to say that anyone who simply spews invective doesn't hate you, they hate themselves. People who were trying to make serious points weren't hateful; just passionate.
I have no doubt that you could quote some vicious language that was used, but from what I read it was the typical level of angry discourse that arises from politicized science.
I read many of the comments in the other video and it was generally a very rational discussion. I think the hateful things he is referring to are the comments that marked him as being political in the video. They said that they came here for the science and proceeded to say that they didn't like the content of the video and went on to unsubscribe.

Thanks Bruno. CO2 in small amounts is not pollution. But unfortunately in large quantities it makes the ocean acidic, so it is a pollutant in that way (plus the whole warming the Earth thing).
Veritasium CO2 in any amount is NOT pollution, it is a gas which is vital for life on Earth. CO2 doesn't make the ocean more acidic, it makes it less alkaline as the current pH is ~8.

Virtually everything, even things vital for life, can have negative effects in high amounts. Iron for example is a absolutely vital to the production of red blood cells, something you can't live without, but that doesn't mean you should eat a bowl of iron filings for breakfast.
In the case of CO2 the same concept applies, no CO2 in our atmosphere would certainly leave earth a desolate frozen wasteland. However an increase in CO2 concentrations will trap more heat from the sun, causing average global temperatures to increase, which in turn melts the polar ice caps, screws up weather patterns, and causes sea levels to rise.
While it's improbable we'd ever get to a scenario like what happened to Venus (where a runaway greenhouse effect has resulted in the second planet from the sun being the hottest in the solar system), bad things would happen nonetheless. Should the polar icecaps melt entirely, many coastal cities and low lying areas (including virtually the entire state of Florida) will find themselves under water.
Also decreasing alkalinity by definition is an increase in acidity, and there's a lot of lifeforms (particularly coral) that can't tolerate such significant changes to water chemistry in either direction..

Less alkaline is more acidic.. and small organisms in the ocean need a steady pH to survive, so any change beyond a point is detrimental to many different food webs.
