I am a white woman who was born and raised in Africa. I've never understood why Americans insist on calling black people African Americans... They are Americans.
Yes, as a Brit neither do I. I'd find it weird if people in UK started calling themselves African British or British Caribbean. Those are the sorts of tick-box descriptions you find in University application forms but are certainly not used in everyday life. The term African American comes across as divisive.
I agree, and that goes to anything. I had a coworker that, when he introduced himself to me, said "in jew"... And I replied... "so? Why should I care about that?". I'm glad that he's period of that, but it doesn't define anyone or means and special treatment for you.

I watched a black woman win a competition the other day and I expected her to say something about being the first black or a first black woman to win. I was so proud of her because all she said was that she was so happy she won because she worked really hard. There are so many labels these days and I dont get it. When you label yourself as something it takes away from your own accomplishments. You're no longer a person who tried their best and succeeded, you're just a label. Stop diminishing who you are. Getting far in life has nothing to do with you being black, Latino, a single parent, gay or whatever. It has to do with your inner strength and the hard work along with your attitude that made you succeed and that's what you should take pride in.

@@StiffyLongJohn No, the civil war started without the intention to free slaves. It started over regulations to the slave trade. The South, not appreciating the federal government telling them how to run a legal business, started a war. It was about states' rights and their ability to self-regulate legal businesses at this point. The North put a blockade around the South. Eventually, the UK wanted to get their cotton again and was going to join the war on the side of the South. The North being rightly afraid of the UK responded by freeing the slaves thus making the war about ending slavery. The UK, having already made slavery illegal, could not enter into a war on the side fighting to keep slavery legal. This means that slaves were freed to make or morally impossible for the UK to enter.

A person should judged by who they are and what they do, not their appearance, genetics, sexuality. As somebody who grew up in a liberal household, I am flabbergasted how much this discussion has changed
Same here, considering a skin colour never had anything to do with race. As someone whos in a mixed race family with people who lool white and have their races pigeon holed as brown or black which makes it seem as though no white looking people have brown family or not black people have white ancestries or families which is unrealistic in this situation, its been the dumbest and most ignorance creating way of describing race. To respectfully know someone elses race or your own races or families journeys it goes a lot further than skin colour. I am sick of people reducing others and themselves to a skin colour, at least the word african refers to a point of family reference or history at some point. If people just make assumptions about someones race based off of their skin colour you just never learn anything about the person or their families. Other people get respect and their countries of origins and families countries communicated respectfully, this whole white and black thing is really dismissive of people and it truly looks like people are just disinterested in communicating clearly and being individuals and rude and are purposely making themselves ignorant of other people

Yes, as a Brit neither do I. I'd find it weird if people in UK started calling themselves African British or British Caribbean. Those are the sorts of tick-box descriptions you find in University application forms but are certainly not used in everyday life. The term African American comes across as divisive.

To respectfully know someone elses race or your own races or families journeys it goes a lot further than skin colour.
