The Problem With Facebook

The problem is much worse than I originally thought.
Facebook is a complex ecosystem of individuals, creators, brands and advertisers, but I don't think it serves any of these groups particularly well because its top priority is to make money. Now, I don't think making money is a bad thing, in fact I hope to make some myself. The problem is the only way Facebook has found to make money is by treating all entities on the site as advertisers and charging them to share their content.
This business plan backfires because 1) not all entities ARE advertisers and 2) it was the content from these people, specifically friends, family, and creators that made the site worth visiting in the first place. Now the incentives are misaligned:
    - individuals want to see great content, but they are now seeing more paid content and organically shared content which appeals to the lowest common denominator (babies, weddings, and banal memes)
    - creators want to reach fans but their posts are being throttled to force them to pay to be seen
    - brands and advertisers have to pay once to advertise their page on Facebook, and then pay again to reach the people who have already liked their page. Plus Facebook is not a place where people generally go to buy things.
Facebook stands in contrast to other social media like Twitter, CZcams, and Instagram where all content is shared with all followers.

Update: Despite over 300 shares on Facebook and 1200+ likes, my facebook post of this video only received 10,000 organic impressions. I paid to promote the post to prove my point that this is what you have to do to reach fans and reached an additional 33,000

      Welcome to Google+, the un-Facebook.
Also, due to the model they have established, and the ever changing landscape (and therefore uncertainty) of what they do with your content, Facebook defections are happening at a certain (and I think accelerating) rate, many of them coming on over to G+.

I almost commented. Something I rarely do. But then I changed my mind, and then I changed it again.
So this ended up a rather meta comment but in a sense it reflects one point made in the video. I'm on google+ and CZcams to engage. Usually only by watching, reading and thinking but now also writing.
I'm on Facebook because all my friends are and there it ends. Both my use of Facebook. And this comment.
      Thanks for an interesting video.

This is the reason why I don't enjoy interacting on Facebook, in order to have my posts pushed out to people who WANT to see my stuff, it seems like I need to post the most baseline things, like, say, me in a bikini. Or a kitten.
Dumbing down content to actually REACH my fans is ridiculous. If they're following me, they want to see my stuff. I don't have money to pay to reach all my fans for everything I post. And paying for views sucks in general, Facebook. So...yeah. Great video!

Agreed - often we forget how lucky we are that CZcams (for some reason) decided it would share revenue in the early days. Of course, I believe that's good for CZcams because it makes the site a place where creators want their content to get viewed very badly, and thus will spend time and money making great content.
Facebook appears to be interested in video, but why would I upload a video to facebook if it doesn't go out to the people following me or earn me money that I can use to buy groceries or pay employees.
The whole mystery of social media...the "I make content so Facebook shareholders can get richer" ethos is very odd. It's all about promotion, getting views on your content, getting recognition in the hopes that, eventually, there will be some payoff. Well, that payoff comes to very few people, and it makes it clear how much healthier and exciting the CZcams ecosystem is...even if it's not the healthiest it's ever been.

The two use vastly different paradigms for content sharing. Facebook tends to 'push' content onto the users (like television, for example), whereas CZcams is more of a 'Pull' mechanism (where users actively search for the content they want to watch). Each has their advantages.

      @savvysavannah Před 7 lety +1

I respect your perspective and if it works for you, then great.
But it won't work for everyone. I grew up in a military family, so I moved around a lot. The people I haven't seen in years are mostly people I would like to see again.
I also appreciate the wide audience so that I get a wide feedback on my opinions. For example, I could say that the welfare system should conduct drug tests so we don't give free money to people so they can spend it on drugs. But then one of my friends could inform me that less than 2% of people on the welfare system test positive for drugs, so we're spending more money on drug testing than we're saving in refusing welfare money. You don't get this kind of feedback through text or email to select people.
Finally, Facebook is a networking site. How much easier is it to say "Hey, I'm looking for a job as a secretary. Does anyone know someone who's hiring?" than to text or email every person you know individually?
Like I said, if deactivating your account works for you, then keep doing it. I just wanted to offer a different perspective.

Interesting to see this now some 3 years on. I have just watched your Veritasium2 video about the changes in CZcams. As I commented on that, we seem to be at the beginning of a world where AIs are running things and we somehow have to influence that. What seems to be happening though is that a very small number of individuals are going to be in control of how it will pan out and this may cause a very large discrepancy in power / wealth. That kind of thing has lead to revolution in the past.

I deleted my facebook 2 years ago. I had no idea it has gotten this bad. I can't imagine why people insist on still using it.
The only problem and incentive, the same thing, is that most people seem to be on it, and if you don't have facebook, you can't get to their page and contact them. Though I heard you have to pay to message people you aren't already friends with... not sure if that's true or over simplified.
I hope the new thing will come along and everyone will use that instead. It doesn't seem to be G+ as of now though. I do have that, and am not "friends/following/followed" by anyone I know really. It's basically only up because G+ tricked me into allowing them to throw it up there, which I think is most people's experience.

People still use facebook because people still use facebook. There are many alternatives to the site but you won't find most of your friends there.
Most people are reluctant to change, but if facebook pushes to make even more money out of it they may gradually loose users until a tipping point is reached and people will abandon it for an alternative service.
The one thing I mostly hate about facebook is that I'm prevented from viewing the content of a page even if I visit it.
When I look at a certain page or group, I won't see the content in the order it was posted, rather it's ordered by how many of my friends like or interact with it. I see months old posts that I commented on but I don't see the interesting new stuff.
This also makes it difficult if not impossible to find some posts you previously saw and found interesting because the content is constantly being rearranged.

If they aren't able to see a given post, they are unable to "Like" it, and thus the overall reach continues to dwindle.

  • @MrLAntrim
    @MrLAntrim Před 10 lety +7

This is beautifully stated. If Facebook limits what you see based on what you like, you will only ever see what you like. This keeps people of one view only seeing post that agree with their world view. This in turn convinces them that everyone believes as they do. The same is true in the opposite direction. The end result is a society where the viewpoints of people become further and further separated from each other even though they may, in reality, share a wealth of common interests and views. Consider the irony of a social networking site centered around friends and staying connected which continues to implement policies that hinders communication and the sharing of ideas. Fascinating.

Content that is liked by friends takes up a far too big portion of my newsfeed. I don't want to see funny images and video's, if I want to see memes I'll visit some other website. I want to be able to select what my newsfeed consists of. Show me things my best friends posted (e.g. by determining who I'm chatting the most with), hide things my friends liked. /

Whenever I get stuck on faecebook for 10 or 15 mins I end up feeling a little dirty. Actually I looked at it a few times from a business perspective and really couldn't see the value. I was thinking I must be missing the point somehow but you have just verified exactly my conclusion - thank you!

Hi, Derek! I don't know if I posted this six years ago when you posted this video, but it fundamentally changed my personal view of social networks, and Facebook in specific. I dropped it because all the stuff you said here made sense.
Six years later, Facebook is just as bad if not worse when it comes to the monetization of their userbase. Specially since the "Social Dilemma" documentary came out, and FB so fervently tried to counter-argument it. So I was wondering if you might be thinking of updating/releasing a new video about this problem?
Keeping rocking with science, dude!! Love your channel!
