I am astounded by the number of people who think this decision was financially motivated. That's not even plausible. If I posted these videos on Veritasium they would get more views and make more money. The real reasons are:
1. Because I want to make videos in a particular style that differs from what Veritasium has typically been, and
2. I want to work with other people on Sciencium whereas Veritasium has always been my own personal endeavor.
3. If you want to be hired to work on Sciencium with me, fill out the application: bit.ly/ScJoinUs
2veritasium I can agree, and tbh with all the fancy gear you have I'm sure funds ain't a problem xD
I see it this way: it's just so common to think that everything is financially motivated, and any unusual action from popular person means "more sellout". :(
2veritasium some people just cant appreciate what you are doing and immediatly think of money because that is the only motivator that could get them to do anything. keep up the great work. i think it is a good idea to seperate the content into different channels. keeps it clean and viewers can choose what content they want to see
Hey man, respect! I was just gonna say, that you'd probably make more money with only one channel but your reasons are very good. Some channels can pull it off but others just become a mess by having multiple topics/formats. This way you'll keep it clean, when there's an upload notification from one of your channels I'll immediately know what to expect.
Makes absolute sense. Definitely appreciate the explanation though, and it's a great way of categorizing your videos.
Also Derek, you're getting jacked...
Tbh most people probably subscribe because of you. The format doesn't matter. The way you explain things is awesome and you are just a really nice guy. If everything was on one channel you would reach more people and grow a single channel with more regular content. But it is your decision of course and if it helps you to organize and be more productive it is probably the best for the people that subscribed to all three of your channels.
That is a nice point of view and I take that on board. If this experiment doesn't work I may go back to just posting on the one channel
Yea I don't get why youtubers always create more than one youtube channel, can't they just upload everything to one channel. This only makes sense if the other format is really completely different like sciene on one channel and lets plays on the other one. But if everything is about science stuff just one time with a greenscreen and one time outside then it's really unnecessary.
My fav one is Veritasium2
+Veritasium Will you be my Physics teacher?
It has true life lessons ^_^
Why are people complaining? Is he NOT giving you free content of the same quality and subject?
It could possibly clog up your CZcams Home, and if you want to watch Derek's recent videos or something, you have to visit multiple channels. Not that it's a problem for me, I'm just suggesting some possible reasons.
edit: was missing a couple of words
He is making it more harder to find his content which is counterproductive to science communication.
but putting it on another channel makes it harder to get, now people have to check more channels for new content. I mean, just because it's free doesn't mean people are willing to go through any difficulty to get it.
Do you people know there's a subscription tab? *All* of the channels you're subscribed to will show up there.
it's not really free is it..
what I get from this: this channel is more vlog orientated, the first channel is for bigger science projects, the third is for smaller, quicker science projects??
YES! and the third channel is not necessarily for smaller science projects, just ones that don't require experiments, interviews etc. Sciencium is the channel with a repeatable format.
Pain Is God Ah someone with understanding capabilities :')
or you could just put it all on one channel
Peter Griffin omg , watch the video again please and try to understand why he want to separate the channels.
you didn't watch the video you're commenting on. he addresses EXACTLY what you just said in the first 120 seconds
I will subscribe to every channel you make.
Same !!
how about the interview videos? I miss them so much... have you stopped because people started to hate the way you talked to people? If so, you mustn't care about them, I really love that kind of format because I feel like that by hearing other people's doubts I understand the subject deeper. I'm big fan of your work, wish you the best
Thanks for the feedback! Part of it has been a lack of good topics. Plus I've just been interested in different things. I will do my best to bring them back this year.
thx dude!
This still doesn't really explain the need for another channel. Do you really think the people on Veritasium wouldn't want to watch the Sciencium videos? Creating a second channel just creates another hurdle for people who want to see all of your videos, and inevitably some percentage of your Veritasium viewers won't subscribe to Sciencium because they'll miss this video or another one about Sciencium, and only a fraction of your original audience will subscribe to the new channel. I mean, just look at SciShow. They have the normal videos, the QQs, the talk shows, and the game shows. Given how many videos they make, splitting off SciShow space makes sense so people's subscription feeds won't be flooded. You have the opposite problem with Veritasium, as you've said yourself, and so if anything Veritasium would benefit from the higher content output from the videos you're currently planning to put on Sciencium.
I appreciate your thoughts and I will consider it. I'm not opposed to changing strategy part-way through... so we'll see how this goes.
A lot of CZcamsrs have different concurrent series in their main channel, it's definitely not a problem as a viewer, especially if these videos are labeled as "Sciencium" etc through thumbnails and titles. Either way, I'm not complaining at all, personally, I'll subscribe to all your stuff.
I agree. Just combine the two. It's not like veritasium gets a ton of posts already.
Let's hope people can somehow work out how to click once more
TempvsMortis I'll tell u an easy way just subscribe to both
For some reason I assumed you wouldn't edit the videos yourself. Seeing how much you actually know and care about filming and editing makes your work even more impressive! Thumbs up and respect to you! :)
you should check why he started veritasuim and you will be shocked even more.
I care only about your passion, your scientific methodology in presenting arguments. For me you can open hundreds of channels. Good luck and good work.
Love all your channels.
bravo dude love the behind the scenes stuff!
This is so siiick, I love all your videos Derek, I dont mind waiting for videos on veritasium because theyr always such good content, respect the hustle m8 keep the vids coming cant wait for the next one
Thank you for the answer. It was interesting.
I also discovered your teleprompter, and I'm gonna buy it right now ! (mine is home made, in wood and glass, very sturdy...).
Thanks for sharing your process, it is interesting to follow.
I will not apply, having my own channel and a PhD to finish, but I wish you all the best leading a team.
You should start a Podcast! I would enjoy that very much :)
Septimus He'd call it podcastium
Lucas van Osenbruggen He sure would!
Septimus H i havent thought about it but now i want it
Thanks for taking us through the process!
Love the new channel! I will continue watching all of your videos on all of your channels. Keep up the great work!
really really proud veritasium fan. #notificationsquad. I'm thinking of making a channel like veritasium in my native language Urdu!! Again, biggest inspiration for my Physics major: Veritasium!! You're amazing Derek!
Thanks!
Veritasium you're welcome! Please keep making videos on all three of your channels!
First of all thank you for making videos. Veritasium is excellent at correcting errors in thinking and 2veritasium useful for hearing another persons well thought out argument for other ways of thinking. My question is when were you in Waterloo (I think) with a large spinning weal? for future engineering situations I suggest you go to the Hacksmith.
Thank you so much for your work.
P.S. We can assume you aren't aiming for a Brady Haran level of CZcams channels, right?
HEY USMAN ! when are you creating the channel , i also want to be a part of it .
Hi Usman. I have been thinking of the same thing and would love to collaborate.
Drop me a message if you think we can join heads.
Cheers.
Interesting to see a bit of the behind the scenes process. And I believe the more structured way (and the more regular uploads) of videos on Sciencium is something that could in the end get more people to watch them regularly. Not saying that wouldn't be the case with Veritasium, but compared to Sciencium, Veritasium now feels more like a special feature.
Pierre Markuse How are you verified when you only have 24 subscribers?
Awesome pro tips! I always find inspiration in these types of talks from you that help me to make my own channel better. I look forward to the awesome things in store for Sciencium! Thanks for doing what you do!
I appreciate how you share your journey and your process (and your goofs), and let us behind the camera with you. For me, it really humanizes you as a CZcamsr and adds quality to all of your channels. Thanks for your openness.
You don't even make videos on your first two channels
did you watch the video?
he could put everything on one channel and no one would care.
I really don't understand why people are so mean. I think you are doing a good work with your channels and the quality of your content is amazing. I like the fact that you are passionate about what you do and you always try something new.
Love your work, look forward to watching. All the best!
Way to go Derek! I look forward to supporting your new channel, and enjoy seeing you so excited about a new project :)
I'm not complaining that you have a third channel! I consume science videos at an astonishing rate, one more channel to feed my addiction!
Exactly!!!!!
if you believe in Pilot Wave Theory, 'nothing is Random'
true.
Veritasium
OMG!! you replied.
Today will be a good day🙂
Thanks
Josep nope, I just concluded, that if you did, "nothing is random for you"
I enjoy your videos where you talk with experts about their fields and breakthroughs. Other channels do this too, but you were always able to word the questions in a way that their answers would make sense to the common person (like myself). Just keep doing what feels best, dude!
All the best for your new channel. Love your videos. Keep enlightening us
Here's a suggested topic. Light colors in kelvins. Simply because I have no familiarity with it and am curious.
Perhaps your forth channel could be called curiosium. 😋
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black-body_radiation
Hey Man,
I am big fan of your video series. And I respect your decision very much, just go ahead with it.
One request though, can you make one video on the topic, "What if all the salt from ocean is gone?"
I really like your new format, Derek! Looking forward to videos from all three of your channels :)
I love behind the scenes! Thank you for your work!
Honestly I'm still not sure I get the point, but really if it helps you organize things in your mind then that's probably reason enough. Best of luck with the new venture.
So why did you stop posting videos on sciencium
because after all audience is the king and the viewers were just not there. It is a financial decision even if its not made for financial gains he was loosing money there regardless.
Loving all of your content. To me, it is irrelevant how many channels you have. Thank you!
Sounds so exciting! I have only been following the other two so far, I'm curious to see more. I'm also curious to see what collabs are going to look like. Especially the illustration/design area of course
It's sad to see so many people harshly criticizing Derek for starting a new channel. It is HIS decision to make and people should respect his choice. Besides, he is still producing interesting videos for us to watch! It's not like the quality of his videos are declining, in fact it is getting better! So lets just stop the hate and focus on the content of his video instead.
Can I suggest you link the channel in your description and add sciencium into your featured channels.
Not only you answer our questions, you give us a very nice behind the scenes. I'm already subscribed to the new channel, and is looking pretty good, I like the new format.
Thank you for showing us your process.
mate, you can make 11 channels, ill be subbing to all of them, BOLD NUTS BOY
Veritasium with SingingBanana when?
alqacer please
>Dr James: Today we're going to talk about the number 5
>*starts sweating*
>Dr. Derek: from toronto or are we on australia? I don't know.
thank you so much for a look behind the scenes! always wanted to know!!
Awesome to see Derek taking the time to answer and reply to the fans and the viewers with question, etc.
Hey, really like the Veritasium video's. perhaps maybe an video with 'The Slow Mo Guys' would be cool, or a video on 'unconscious mind reading' of Freedom of Choice - Mind Field (Ep 5)
Anyone else think that Derek looks like Elon Musk with a Beard?
we both have South African parents, went to the same university, and moved to LA. He's a billionaire car mogul, rocket entrepreneur, and I'm a CZcamsr ;)
Maybe interview Musk about rockets then?
Thanks for all your time and hard work. Awesome videos man.
Congratulations for your new channel! That's great to see that even after all you've done, you're willing to get out of the "comfort zone" and keep on progressing. thumbs up!
Hit that subscribe button so hard I nearly broke my laptop
I will not believe on it....but by watching your body I think you may be saying truth 😂
I think it's a great move and I don't really get why anyone would have a problem with it. It's a matter of hitting one more subscribe button. Something I'd gladly do a few more times in case you're thinking about creating even more channels :) (i.e. I personally love all your content and will subscribe to all your channels)
2veritasium I just love you more and more every time you take time to bring us ( your supporters ) in on your methodology. Thanks brother! Hope ya see this
Very informative video. You are very good at what you do! And you've obviously gotten better at every turn!
What does the j and 2.72 mean?
the 2.72 is e (eulers number), and I assume he has used j because on his main channel its i, so its just the next unit vector.
I'm liking and replying to this comment for it to go to the top and hopefully other people will reply to it also, and make it even more visible in the comment section... and maybe Derek will see it and answer this question!
Luke Waite also in math we tend to use i for imaginary numbers and I physic we often use j instead of i because i is used for current intensity. But you could be right !
I agree I'll also reply.
Also like the comment! :) (the original one)
Thanks dirk
His name is Derek, mate.
Feynstein 100 and your name is apparently not Tim
Edwin chattellon Good observation, I guess.
Thanks Verbalasticum
well, I for one am excited about the new channel and it's format. And glad that you're still keeping the Veritasium channels, basically, the same, as I really enjoy their formats.
As long as youre still making the same awesome videos you have been making since the start i couldnt be more happy
At some point the audio and the video don't match...
yeah I think this is an issue with FCP...
Isn't Sc already an element?
Gruntay Merkul Yes - Scandium
sorry Scandium!
2veritasium eyy Scandium gonna feel bad now.
Check out sciencenotes.org/scandium-facts/ for more information on Scandium.
Nice :) I love seeing behind the scenes from different creators - and I love the idea of Sciencium being collaborative. Keep rocking Derek! :)
Immediately subscribed when I saw your new channel. The focus one more regular, more easily created content is a smart choice. I look forward to your continued content across all your channels.
Admit it Derek, you just want to catch up to Brady on your silver button collection ▶️ 😆
You should have named it 'Cognitium'
From the latin of 'knowledge'
(Also you can't use Sc cause of scandium)
Can't use C or Co either...
Oh, you're right.. :P
Sciencium is good!
hahahha
how bout Cn? Cog-nitium
@@sleepydog9968 It would have been less catchy though... BTW Copernicium has already occupied that place at Z=112 (Atomic number) 'Cn' I don't know...maybe 10-12 years ago or so??
I really enjoy all the videos you put out and feel the effort that goes into each, even though they may not be common the are a great pleasure to view. I really liked your video on the suns rotation and if that is anything to go by I feel this new channel is a great step forward. keep up the topnotch, youtube defining work.
Love your new channel, and the new format is very useful. I teach physics in college, and I used the Veritasium's Bullet-Block experiment and others. Now I can use these videos with lecture format. Love both.
Vertiasium = top quality, low quantity, professional investigative journalism. 2vertiasium = high quantity, raw / unscripted and personal sharing for the hard core fans. Sciencium = core science education. These styles / brands would dilute each other and confuse their audiences if they shared the same branding.
Nowadays it's just veritasium sadly... I loved 2veritasium
what happened to sciencium??
Science and technology came together to make an amazing video. Love your stuff, Derek! Excellent complementary explanation to the one you gave me on Twitter!
Thanks for sharing how you do the videos - we all take the quality of your videos a little for granted, so it's good to be reminded how much effort they require. As far as channels... I don't care how many channels, I'll watch all your videos - just keep them coming.
keep making videos like this⤴ 😍love from #India . You can create as many channels you want , i will subscribe each one of them, just don't create "click bait" videos
I'm liking the format. Interesting videos more often so great!
I'm really love your videos so I'm glad you're going to be making more!
I enjoy the content you produce and don't care what channel it's on. Looking forward to the future content
Great to see there will be new forms of content coming
Great! I look forward to seeing what you come up with when you collaborate with others. Interesting to see how you work, too.
Congratulations on the new channel / cameras, etc. Loved your wheel video. That was funny when it went charging off across the lawn. Great beard BTW.
I find your videos very stimulating, and this is a great insite into the (your) video making process. Thanks.
I enjoy all your videos !!! I don't care how many channels you have .. just keep them coming. And thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much for this opportunity! Hope to hear from you soon!
I enioy that you take your time. The quality of your content is well worth the wait! Keep up the amazing work. Also inspired to be a physicist partly due to your channel!
Hey man, I'll watch your videos no matter what channel they're on. I think you plan for this channel is going to be great! Can't wait to see what comes out
I have to admit, your new channel sounds exciting and I have yet to figure out how to articulate just how I arrived at that excitement.
No matter, I'm stoked!
All the work that you've done so far is very interesting and usually filled with unexpected tidbits that tend to blow the mind.
For example, your trip to Chernobyl is still compelling since in the face of Chernobyl itself and everything about that place, I'm still stunned from your pointing out that the most radioactive places on Earth are not just there, but are also walking around with us everyday.
For me that's extraordinary video journalism, education & entertainment, all of which I find stimulating! So thank you very much. :)
it means 3 times work for you
and 3 times knowledge for all viewers ,
totally support it and i hope that you keep giving us such fantastic videos
I love the way he sorts out different formats for different channels.
That's fair I guess. Thanks for taking the time to address our questions and concerns
Thanks for even more content!
You are an amazing person, really well done Sir, looking forward for the new videos,
Wow this is so awesome, I've been very curious about how my favorite youtubers make their content, and this is awesome. Thanks for sharing this behinds the scenes peak!! And as far as making channels, you can make as many channels as you like, and I'd subscribe to them all ;o)
Thank you for your service! Bringing science education to the general public, has never been more important than it is now!
Cheers mate!
Its funny, it was the spinning weight video you talked about that made me originally subscribe. So I am really glad to hear you are making more videos in that style!
Thank you for being you :) I really appreciate everything you do here on youtube.
really impressive, to actually see behind the sense work of you !!!
Thanks for organising it like this so it's easier for us subscribers to choose what we want to see. Even when it isn't necessarily best for you
While watching your videos in the past I have often wondered what equipment you are using. Finally a peek behind the camera. Thanks! Would also like to see what equipment you use to perform your walk and talk videos. Regarding the question "Why Create a Third Channel?" well . . . all creatives naturally explore. Keep up the great work.
This video was really useful for someone trying to get a similar setup going
I will now become a patron supporter. Because I find you genuine and I enjoy the content of your video. And I will subscribe to sceincium as well because your content has credibility.
The combination of variability and high production value in Veritasium is what I like most about it. Each video feels completely unique, and the level of effort put into them takes you well above the CZcams noise floor. People will still be enjoying your work 150 years from now, long after 99.9% of the other stuff is consigned to the dust-barrel of history! Your style reminds me a lot like David Attenborough's documentaries... I feel a little sad when each video reaches the end.
Keep on rocking!
-Matt
Nice setup going there! ❤️
Keep on, Derek! Whatever you do, if you do it your way it will be fantastic!
Bro, you're my hero, just keep doing what you're doing. it's gonna be awesome.
I like you, and I like knowledge. so do whatever makes you happy and keeps the flow of quality content which you care about and enjoy making coming our way
OK i get it this seems like a great idea. Also i got excited when i saw a clip filmed in waterloo, love this city. keep up the good work!
