- My Lamborghini QV is at Tyrrell's Classic cars because the gearbox had started making horrible noises and there were a few more jobs that I wanted doing. In this video, we strip the gearbox and find out what the problem is..

Imagine that, a Lamborghini gearbox looking like a tractor's, I wonder where they'd got the inspiration.
Might say the same for Porsche!
Lamborghini made tractors before sports cars.
I had the same thought!
I can't believe Ferrari is making tractors. It's another company. I wonder when Ferrari will sue them.
@@Desertduleler_88 Jay Leno featured a Lamborghini tractor in one of his episodes. czcams.com/video/-wjL7lDtxW8/video.html
Finally we get to see what was causing that strange noise! Not as bad as I imagined it would be though. That V12 was certainly a beast to clean I can tell you 😂
Was great too see your cleaning process at work, seems like a real genius way of cleaning as it does not leave any residue. Hope your business really takes off.
Everything came up really well, good job.
is this a new process i haven't heard of it before?
@@francosheene4631 the latest machines allow us a fine precision for detailing cars (underbody and engine bays) but no, dry ice blasting as a technology has been around since 1945.
Lovely job, we had a dry ice demonstration at work and it's capabilities are fantastic without the surface erosion of abrasives
“There are some good deals on the costa del sol!” Whilst talking about the gearbox. That grin… the chemistry between these two gentlemen is rather enjoyable.
One of those two is going to the Costa del Sol after that job, not necessarily Harry!
Iain's face in the flashback shows the depth of his concern for the car. It looked like he was feeling that grinding himself.
Yes, I was yelling at my screen "stop it Harry, have you no mechanical sympathy?"
@@gazzafloss I suspect there were a few people grimacing. I was one of them....
It looks like he puts 10.000 Volts into his private parts.
Meanwhile Harry is talking about it "singing" lol
@@EddieIrvine106 While it was actually crying out for MERCY!
Can't get enough of these two on camera. I know it's costing Harry a few bob but it's awesome content. 😁👍
I liked the Harry's Farm plug..surely just pop in an old Lamborghini Trattori gearbox!
Good dynamic between you two chaps, funny bit of banter..
Iain was giving off £££££ vibes from the get-go, but in a very apologetic way!
Only a complete petrolhead with very deep pockets could be as nonchalant and good humoured as Harry when given news like that 😊
The rest of us would be in tears and walking around in circles like a headless chicken 😮
Harry must love it because he receives a car back looking immaculate then takes another one to go through the whole process again 😅
@@thefamilyrobbo hopefully the views from the videos offset the cost a little… though it’ll still be a painful bill regardless!
12:43 "You've obviously driven it sympathetically".... I actually laughed out loud at this, remembering your video showing the grimace on Iain's face as you drove it along with Iain in the passenger seat listening to the gearbox grind itself to death...
Harry at least isn't abusing the clutch while knowing how to shift gears.
Though he asks the gearbox to take most of the 450 hp.
Ian, ‘I’ll put these gloves on so I look like I know what I’m talking about’. 😂😂 What a legend!
Tractor Grade - Neil Parish is knocking one out in the Commons to this RIGHT NOW!
I'd be blaming Chris Harris for this damage when he drifted it, Harry! 😂
Lol
Now we know why Hamster and May weren't allowed to launch this and the testrossa on GT.
I immediately thought of that video too, but it was 10 years ago now, and Harry has done many miles in it since then. czcams.com/video/_dD5_Q_wIOQ/video.html
The damage to the gear teeth is called 'spalling' and is a common point of failure in many gearboxes
Indeed, the result of (sub)surface fatigue in the material.
These engineers/ mechanics are true artists .
Growing up a petrol head I’ve always greatly admired their skill and deep knowledge.
Fascinating video. Ian's shop is the place to be with these cars.
Replaying the video of Harry showing the noise to Ian in a drive test was priceless. Reminds me of my sister who would turn up the radio when a sound like that became persistent.
There's definitely a degree of "I know my car" with an older Italian one, though 😅 I used to have passengers constantly letting me know I had warning lights coming on in an old Alfa, but you just had to take a decent right hand bend to get rid of them again as they weren't actually on for a reason
I had a G/F with the same mindset, besides the radio trick. My car had a manual choke, she drove it to work and complained "it drinks a lot of petrol" she only did the 15 mile round trip with her handbag hanging from the extended choke control.
@@russcattell955i there's a story you won't hear from today's kids 😆
@@helplmchoking Italian electric lol.
Been TRYING to get a diagnosis on a nasty rumble coming from a driveshaft hub/bearing for YEARS now. They all claim not to hear it. I have to turn up the stereo and try to ignore it for now. When it eventually detonates I'll be able to know what it was ........
Comedy Gold. How Iain went for the gloves to surgically relieve Harry of his wallet.
All we need is ian tyrell to drop a vid, normally one follows the other 👍
Iain’s grin at 0:27 , love these two.
6:43 I loved that moment when Iain was recommending the ceramic coating and spoke of the practicality but Harry says, "Cause they look cool as well". haha Another great video from the dynamic duo of motoring.
A “trick manifold” as Harry would say!
Many times classic car restorations are a heartache but there's nothing better than restoring a classic the right way.
A very expensive gearbox disaster narrowly avoided I think!👍 Personally, I wasn't too surprised at Ian's cost estimates for the components. The cost of bespoke engineering has come down enormously over the last decade or so with modern measuring and CNC machining techniques. What would once have been a few days manual machining by an experienced engineer can be done in a few hours. It'll be interesting to find out if OEM parts are still available from Lambo off the shelf and if so, what they cost. I'm looking forward to the heads coming off to see how the valves and valve train have fared. 👍
In the nick of time!
I'd be surprised if Lamborghini didn't have at least some degree of support around heritage parts given how other car markers do it.
Even if they don't, I imagine they'd be reasonably happy to provide as much information was they can to let others have their own parts made - if not, the Countach was easily popular enough for plenty of people to have put together all the required measurements, drawings and such several times over. Amazing how things have changed, though. If I wanted to absolutely abuse my poor little hobby CNC I could make most of this in my home garage. Admittedly it'd take several days and may well turn out pretty rough but the whole machine cost less than these parts would have been even 20 years ago
@@helplmchoking Visited the Lambo factory a year ago, I can confirm they have an amazing vintage parts program. You can get almost any part made new. They showed us some miura suspension arms made made on CNC from the original drawings, quite cool.
The big job if you have the knowledge and access to a suitable machine is design work ie CAD.
Though i believe these two shafts is hardened which means that they demands a suitable gear grinding machine too !
And then there’s getting the heat treating done right afterward yes?
"nope, that's off someone else's car, I don't recognize it", you are a good sport Harry.
Iain's wicked grin 😈 reminds me of the Evil Emperor at the end of Star Wars Ep.3 when Vader cries "NOOOOOOOOO!" 😫 Lol!
Harry did an amazing Countach video several years ago where he proclaims “I’m going to rebuild it, rebuild it, and rebuild it again.” The man loves his Countach.
Always love the Iain and Harry combo. It’s costing money for Harry but it’s a great passion that pays the best rewards.
I realize that I have gone a bit mental by the fact that I enjoy watching two men slightly older than myself talking about various bits of metal as much as I do. This is excellent entertainment in my book.
Thanks for the update Harry! Always enjoy and appreciate your content 🙂
Sunday- watch Harry and Tyrrell times. Always fabulous.
Thank you Iain & Harry. I really enjoy this show. I really do.
Harry and Iain, what a team! I could listen to them chat for hours 👍
Seeing these two icons together, with their banter and witty comments, is such a treat! Thank you very much, great video!
Hello again. Well Harry what a brilliant update vlog, Iain and his team are the really know their cars, so good to be part of your Contach rebiuld, such detail. Regards, RichardA.
6:32 was an interesting view to see, and from the outside at 6:58
I love these workshop episodes, thanks for sharing!
It is truly a treat to see Iain in action, especially on such a worthy mission. Thank you for this fascinating and intriguing installment on the Countach repair. I hope the bill on the new shafts/gears is as reasonable as possible. Please continue to keep us posted on the progress!
I love it how Ian even when giving you bad news is smiling and laughing, lovely chap.
Absolutely love the rapport between you two guys!
Sunday evening! a perfect evening would could not be complete without a new episiode of Harry's Garage and Iain Tyrrell!
The implicit & overt humour is delicious! Thanks Harry & Iain! All the best Harry w/ achieving that ballpark pricing.
The gentle interaction between the two of you is by far my favorite. So much understated statements.... "SLIGHTLY past its prime" Thanks so much for the content and the conversations.
Hopefully my subscription will help out a little bit, Harry. It sure is entertaining watching both you and Ian do what you do respectively. Thank you for helping him launch his channel. Love them both.
A great double act are Iain & Harry, the Morecambe and Wise of classic motoring, great to see as always!
This continues to be a fascinating series! Regular viewers well-remember Mr. Tyrrell's reaction as long as he had to live with what caused the noise.
The two most sophisticated and truly cool channels on here.
Gears look to be rust pitting damage. I've seen it many times on gears and camshafts that sat for a long time. The oil washes away over time and the surface gets exposed to dew from the air. It forms rust crystals that turn into 36 grit carbide sandpaper as soon as it's used. Between the pitted surface and scoring from the rust crystals, the demise is accelerated.
Put your classic cars on stands and run them for 30 minutes idling in gear every 4 to 6 months if it is not being used. This will evaporate the condensation and lubricate bearings, seals, gears, etc.
Quality comment. 👍
...or better still, just go for a blast to remember why you own it :)
@@richardbower8707 Even better
It's nice to watch someone else getting expensive news about their classic.
These are the best videos you make Harry! Normal mortals can't afford these cars but doesn't stop us appreciating the work to keep the gorgeous 'beasts' on the road !
Lovely video. Fascinating to see the inner workings of the gearbox.
I've had that conversation with clients a thousand times, and have always appreciated those who, like Harry, really understand and appreciate what it is that you're doing and are able to maintain a sense of humor about it in the face of the billing to come.
Very entertaining episode (I had a good larf during the 'doctor's appointment'). Must be so reassuring knowing the Countach is in such capable hands as Iain's.
So sorry for Harry . He was feeling
so much pressure before knowing final verdict. It'll be painful but in the end it will be better than new! Really love the way Ian is explaining every single detail . Great videos!
Whenever I feel like i'm drowning with all my project cars, harry rolls up with a casual "gotta re and re the heads on my lamborgini" and makes me feel better.
Wonderful video! Great to see the parts presented in such a way. Looking forward to it being put back together and everything ‘tickety-boo’! 👍
Watching Harry and Iain talk about cars is an unalloyed pleasure..
" If it ain't broke don't fix it". Iian, I was not aware you spoke southern so fluently. As a southerner by birth, I salute you. Cheers
Pure escapism. Exactly what I want from CZcams. Thanks Harry 👍
You've got to love the way Ian smiles as he gives you the bad expensive news.
Great video. Fascinating to hear technical details from an expert!
"Like being with a Dr" - made manifest when the gloves went on.
Excellent as always.
Loved the insight into the Countach's transmission and the banter between you and Iain. I don't think I'll ever be in the position of owning a Countach myself, but I love to live it vicariously through your videos. Thank you Harry for sharing all this with us!
Always interesting to see the engineering (or lack of) side of these vehicles.
Also listening to Ian's knowledge base.
This is a proper good look at the inner workings of our favourite poster car - brave man Harry 👍😎
Great video, Harry! I love Iain Tyrrell; he is a true gentleman with a great sense of polite humour. He absolutely respects every vehicle he works on or drives and sees his work as a privilege not a job. What a dude!
My favorite two British gentlemen!!!! Hello from the US! Love you guys!!!
Two gentlemen, what a pleasure to watch.
This is a fantastic channel crossover. Two icons talking about great cars. Fantastic.
Thats blue Muira looks stunning!!! Imagine walking down to your garage & seeing that every day!! 😍😍😍 Xx
My word, another wonderful video update from two of my favourite CZcamsrs. Cheers
Oh boy! Thanks for asking those questions on camera. Great to see.
"Ordering from Amazon!" Lol lol I've followed you since your early Evo days Harry, and so so chuffed you are still about making these videos. You are unique Harry, and I love it
At this point, any video I'm watching transforms into a story movie -style... I don't know if I will ever own a vintage supercar from Italy, so the gearbox knowledge is unnecessary for me.... but I just love the way everything gets presented. Simple, with style, nice jokes, and no "special effects" ... Just car-emotions and stories... Thanks Harry :)
This is top notch comedy...these two are great...better than anything on tv...
Fascinating Ian finding the root cause of the horrid noise. Great video. Looking forward to the next visit with Ian.
That was a feast for my eyes, whilst having my breakfast! As to see the gearbox, it was fascinating to see it all taken out! You see, once I had a racing car with a gearbox from F1's in the sixties! I went to Hewland and his guys showed me how to change the ratios for each race! Now you were talking about the loading on all the internals ok? My racing car was 750kg and we could not do standing starts as it would have broken or even smashed the gearbox! But once on the move so to speak it was a delight to change great!it shifted as quickly as you could move the great leaver!! That was really interesting to see so thank you Harry for filming it and Ian for showing us all too!! :)
Brilliant video 👍 Really enjoying this process.
I'm so glad that your car is able to be fixed.
I've only just started to learn about engines, so I'm in awe of his knowledge.
I love what the engine looks like, it looks as though it was designed by H.R. Giger.
Great vid. Something very enjoyable about watching something get restored
Harry has been well and truly shafted!
Iain makes a gearbox lecture sound interesting. A genius bloke really.
Always great when Harry visits Tyrrell's
Great episode, surprisingly funny even though the fear of cost was lurking, some great camaraderie between them , I wasn’t rubbing my hands 😂😂 just brilliant guys thank you
Rubbing his hands like a you know what.....
The best double act on CZcams. Back of the net!
Love the look on Ian's face as he grits his teeth listening to the gear box clatter.
No stiff upper lip there.
His matching comments I think defines the British habit of understating things.
The Countach gearbox rebuilds cost is still probably going to work out cheaper than the 911 Turbo's Spanish road trip fuel bill! Another great video - looking forward to Iain manually lapping in the valves 🙂 👍👍
Hahahaha, brilliant vid. With hindsight, the noise was terrible but it could have been much worse. great to see the those two gentlemen making a lot of us jealous about those cars.
Harry could NOT wait to see the gearbox, and, maliciously (in a good and healthy way, of course!), Tyrell was holding him off to make him more eager to do that....What a pleasure to watch these two knowlegable gentleman casually discuss engines, tranmissions and cars...!
A shop like Iain's makes me wish I lived in England... I love the restoration videos!
So pleased you added the test drive at the end.
It's safe to say that Harry "Bet The Farm" on Tyrell's expert assessment...
Subtly theatrical.... Like comedy gold and improving with age! Showing all the nice bits to soften the blow and allowing Harry to come to the realization of the status of the gearbox for himself, by gentle demonstration, rather than saying
"I'm sorry sir, it's kippered."
Classic!
Another wonderful video, looking forward to seeing it back on the road.
Another great informative video. I think this was the first time I saw Harry a bit apprehensive about prices. If Harry ever has to sell the car there is a great video to prove why he would be asking a top price for the car. I would not be surprised if this is the way Tyrrell's Classic Cars treat all their clients.
Love your video's Harry. Very informative and presented well.
Love you and Iain together! Need that on BBC 1 on Sunday evening 👍
This dude reminds me of William Regal. What a guy, could listen all day. Amazing place.
The two masters of CZcams. Another quality upload. Thanks
Fascinating video.. Could listen you Harry and Iain talk gears for hours. Anyone else laugh when Harry pretended he wouldn't be able to afford to go on holiday and pay for the rebuild? I'd love his money, and car collection!
Two old British geezers talking about mechanics. I could watch this for hours. 🤣
For as old as it is, and how much force is sent through those gears it’s impressive it’s mostly ok. Such an amazing machine
Dear Harry, Great video and so cool to learn things like this.
Ramen noodles......
Keep these videos coming. And thank you to you and your spouse - great quality stuff.
Harry took that well “probably under a grand foreach of the three parts. So goodness knows how much the overall costof dismantling, cleaning, repairing, replacing other parts, reassembling and sorting the engine out will work out.
No 2 ways about it, Harry is a better farmer than Clarkson!
