'Pull to release' clutches give a slightly higher clamping force (i.e torque capacity) for a given pedal effort relative to 'push to release' clutches, because they allow a slightly stronger diaphragm spring to fit in tho the pressure plate diameter. This comes at the expense of additional assembly complexity with the clutch release mechanism, hence them being worthwhile in some high powered applications, but not worthwhile in more normal applications.
Well said. Is it the same for Automatics. 👌👌
The Honda S2000 has a pull type clutch fyi
As an Engineer, I appreciate explanations like these, thank you very much Richard.
Background info in the comments Is gold thanks
I knew smart people watched Harries Garage. Thanks Richard for demonstrating it and teaching me something. Not a wasted day after all.
Craig gets my personal Oscar for Best Supporting Role in Harry's and Ian's videos. For me, his matter-of-fact descriptions of such intricate and demanding work are never less than enthralling. Those carpets are a revelation.
Completely right. Craig does great restoration work without simply buying and fitting "new stuff".
Engineering with love. Rare in these days.
And he's such a lovely boy.🥰 😂
Iain must be praying everyday that he never quits....He is incredibly talented....and seems very humble....
Craig " I just matched up the original holes on all the carpets and rubber!"
Attention to detail!!
Without Iain Tyrrell and his uniquely talented team of specialists, work like this would take years. It's a privilege to see how it's done.
It does take them years actually.
Craig is definitely a real asset to Tyrrell's Workshop - seems a quiet and unassuming chap, but really is a highly skilled craftsman whose restoration work is absolutely fantastic. I'd love to work there, even if just making the teas and coffees!! 👍🏻😉
Gotta love 'mission creep'!
"My Countach is going in to have a gear box fault repaired"
Six months later: "The carpets are nearly finished"
Some of the most expensive words when working on cars in general are: While, You , Are, In and There.
You gotta have that 'gumption' in the floor mats.
Mission creep is basically a built-in feature of loving and working on cars.
I will say it again. Any day we get Harry and Ian in the same video is a great day indeed. I can't thank Harry enough for bringing Ian onto CZcams for us all.
I heard it was Olivier Namèche who convinced Iain to start the CZcams channel ?
@@1983dmd Well might have been but first I saw of Ian was Harry bringing the Espada in and boom, Ian has a channel after. I do think Ian has said it all started with Harry but...
Thank God! My Sunday evenings had become barren. Now the joy has returned. Can't wait for the next instalment of the Fulvia resto. Thank you Harry.
Thank you for the update.
To put my 10p in, I'd have the other side wheel bearing done while the car is with Ian. If that side is gone the other is not usually far behind.
One of the few mechanical tasks I was able to do on my Alfa. I found out SKF made all OEM bearings which were simply put into Alfa packaging with mark up added, and saved some money by buying direct. Probably the cheapest part of this process
Harry, I doubt that you'll ever read this but I have to say thank you for allowing all of us who had these cars as posters on the wall to go on this journey with you. Thanks for sharing your real world experiences with them also.
Love the exhaust reverb as the Countach passed the truck. We have a tunnel my brother and I go through on our MV Agusta triples, and we always drop down to second a run close to the redline just to hear the exhaust noise…pure joy!
I love when the two best car guys on CZcams get together and have a right old natter! Great video thanks for sharing 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
My god Iain is really blessed with co-workers like Craig - it must be a real thrill to work there… so much passion und attention to detail! This hardly can be found anywhere else these days I guess
I love the sound of this countach. That opening scene. Really looking forward to it’s completion video
The appreciation of Harry's car the attention to detail is 👌 ian should be highly proud of his fellow employees 👏
Why don't you block off those front grilles inside if they don't cool anything and cause such serious problems?
Or drill some holes in the fibre glass lower panel for drainage
@@nickkritikos210 That would still allow that whole compartment to get soaked every time it rains or there's standing water!
I enjoy all the banter with the crisp closeups as I've been a gearhead for nigh on fifty plus years now. You look at that engine, the casting marks, just how it goes together... I think you can still see a bit of post-WWII construction going on there. High marks for that carpet repair.
Iain and his team are amazing. When my Golf need new tyres I dread having to find the money for it, while Harry almost welcomes the news of new rose joints and wheel bearings. Must be nice to be in that position. What a fantastic life Harry leads.
I would imagine that the most dreadful thing said in Iain's garage would be "oops". Fantastic overview as always Harry and I can't wait to see the finished product.
What a glorious sound it makes thanks Harry
Can you imagine Ian and Harry with their own type of wheeler dealers show, specialising in these classics? one can dream.
a 12 car series would take 20 years to put together , however just watching them rebuild Harry's collection is just as good and pretty much that show except he keeps the car at the end. (well most of them for a good while)
Love how Ian just happily works away with the watch on the wrist. So many would have that thing hidden away somewhere. Ian just uses it as intended.
The original tool watch, which became a marketing driven, luxury, investment piece.
I'm watching this from Spain, which is no different to Italy with the August closure custom. The mentality is much the same as well, it simply wouldn't have occurred to the people processing the order for the gearwheel to point out the partner wheel would be required as well. You learn not to scream with frustration ! Brilliant rebuild, great to watch.
The only channel in the world where I enjoy watching 3 grown man talking about floor mats.
I'm a hgv tech. Our last generation Mercedes Actros had a pull type clutch, changed to a push type now though. Much easier to get the box back in! It was a pain to line the fork up on a pull type clutch.
Also, put the valve lap tool in the end of a cordless drill, saves time and saves your hands 😁
These are my favourite videos on CZcams! I love to see old classics being restored, especially by these two 'Old Classics'! 😂
I remember back in the late 70’s going to the Briggs Cunningham Auto Museum and seeing Mrs.Cunningham’s pearl white Miura. Beautiful car. I’ve loved the Miura ever since.
Iain is such a great guy, knowledgeable, patient and down to earth.
There’s a myriad of issues for a 40k miles car but then again it is a specialist vehicle.
Harry obviously knows “ball park” what the final bill will be but seems not too bothered…
Great to see even if only a glimpse of one of my favourite cars, the Fiat 130
Greetings from Greece
CZcams monies should be paying for this.
Really wonderful to see these details of the Countach engine and car!
Nice ! Always a pleasure ! The classics are so important to keep in good condition ! Good job Harry !
It only went in for wiper blades
When you two gentleman come together to do a video you absolutely know for certain that is going to be a good one. Such a pleasure of watching especially for me, since I'm doing the restoration on my Corvette at home. Just lovely work done by Tyrrell workshop and great to see that Harry puts so much effort in doing his cars right. Keep up the good work and I hope more videos are coming along soon.
This is why Harry's Garage is so cool. Harry-"the carpets are a structural part of the car". (Afer refurb). HIs love, knowledge and enthusiam are infectious. Thanks Harry for the infection.
Glad to see this example of the great Countach is getting the love she needs. Good man Harry!
Harry, you keep on spending & we all enjoy the outcome.
Metcalfe & Tyrell. Perfect
I do love the old cars, massive respect for your continued devotion, when a lot of the problems seem to be down to poor technology at the time. I’ve zero extra income so it’s great you keep these hero’s on the road.
Its such a mad pretty thing, good to see it getting all the medical attention it needs. Chapeaux Harry
Harry, I'm a trade-qualified automotive machinist (engine reconditioner) and when you change valve guides or put K-line valve guide liners in you really shouldn't be lapping valves like that, they should go to a machine shop and have the seats cut on a machine like a Serdi, Rottler, etc.
When you put valve guides in they never line up as they did before with the only exception to this I've ever seen is on Caterpillar cylinder heads. You will end up with seats that are slightly wider on one side than the other, and you're missing out on a modern three angle valve job that will perform better than the original.
Getting the valves ground and seats cut isn't crazy expensive, I could do each of those heads in around an hour each on a Serdi, plus around the same time to grind the valves.
I would only lap valves if 1, I didn't have access to a Serdi, and 2, I didn't replace the valve guides.
You're leaving performance on the table doing it that way, and the amount of time dicking around doing 48 valve seats it'll be more expensive and a much worse result lapping them. I'm actually shocked Ian is doing this, especially on a Lamborghini. I would never trust a mechanic to rebuild an engine, ever, they know how to do it, but often not the finer details which are important, that's why a lot of them bring engines to people like me.
Also, I hope Ian checks the valve spring pressure before those heads go back together.
You might think I'm just some doom and gloomer that always pops up in the comments section, so please give your local engine machining shop a call and discuss what I said with them to get another opinion.
Yes sir, lapping all those valves like that is archaic practice.
are you really questioning probably the worlds leading Lamborghini restorer on his methods? Exactly how many Lamborghini V12's have you rebuilt?
@@jaseleese7549 I am. A Lamborghini cylinder head is no different to any other. I have reconditioned many thousands of cylinder heads.
@@LordandGodofCZcams and how many of them were for classic Lamborghinis?
@@jaseleese7549 no idea, I've probably done a few, I've done everything from lawnmowers to top fuel dragsters, from Toyota Camrys to Ferraris. A Lamborghini cylinder head is no different to any other cylinder head, why would it be? How many have you done?
Fantastic attention to the detailing, right up my street, I’m one of those extremely fussy individuals, it’s got to be right in every detail, an unusual trait nowadays. So much so called “workmanship” is half arsed. It’s a real pleasure to see people taking a pride in their work. I’m a big fan of Iain & Harry, including Harry’s Farm being a son of the soil. Best of luck to you both in your projects. Brilliant
Wonderful to see true craftsmanship and attention to detail from Iain and team.
Such a humble team Iain has working with him, and the man himself, and Harry of course. So refreshing in this day and age, not only true craftsman but the love for everything, every nut and bolt, and carpet too, shines through. Great work all round. Really do enjoy Harry and Iain, fantastic partnership and meeting of minds.
They spacers to increase CC is abllsolutely nuts. I've no idea how they managed to stay reliable after that but they did. They must have been well studded these engines.
Typical Italian “solution”
But what about the compression ratio ?
@@mercedesw211classic The engine has been stroked to achieve the increase in displacement. (It may also have increased bore, I don't know).
@@johncrowley5612 I looked it up. The compression ratio indeed dropped from 10.5:1 to 9.5:1, but they managed to achieve more horsepower by producing torque at higher revs and clearly having more mixture available...(bore also increased)
@@mercedesw211classic Thats the static compression ratio but the overall active cr probably went up through having more time to suck the mixture in (larger stroke) and a higher stroke-bore ratio.
Thats why it breathes better at higher rpm but would also ultimately limit maximum rpm. A better rotating assembly is how to get around that and they can then also use cams with more lift and duration but especially more lift at the ends of that duration. Again this would ultimately limit rpm unless better valves and springs were used.
So generally this is a pretty comprehensive upgrade over the older 4.0l.
Also dropping the static cr would help with running on unleaded and its lower octane numbers when it first came about - something it was almost certainly designed for since the seats are already capable.
Its interesting stuff to see the engineering work arounds from those days.
OMG. You have to be so patient until all problems are sorted. But the results are gonna be amazing. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😊
It is just wonderful to see, what you can all do! Well done to Ian and your team! When I used to work in London I actually saw 4 of those wonderful cars and they were the exact same colour! I was then a teenager and it was lovely to see them! I have just loved the detail that I can no see with my new iMac in 4K It's as if I am with you all! Thank you Harry for making this fantastic clip and I say to Ian, thank you for allowing it to be seen! That was just lovely to see how things are done! It is one thing knowing what can be done, but when you have never seen the sort of attention to detail by a group of specialists it is wonderful plus your lovely sense of humour too 😉😊👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👌
This should be in a playlist. I can’t keep track of the saga 😁
The skill and workmanship what has been done so far is staggering. Absolutely superb.
What about the Lancia Fulvia’s body restoration ? That was a pure masterpiece of art.
I absolutely love the banter between Harry and Iain....Netfix is missing out on these guys! Craig is also a master craftsman.
In my opinion Netflix or any TV channel would ruin their output. It’s the beauty of CZcams that the likes of Iain and Harry have complete production independence.
Oh dear lord ! Do we need to have a whip around, I'm scared and it's not even my bill
Think I saw you on the way back from Iain's garage in Heswall. Gave a thumbs up to a red Espada from a knackered old Passat. Thanks for another wonderful video. I love this kind of stuff on old Italian V12s.
I've seen those spacer plates before, i used to be into Hillman Imps and spacer plates were used on the big capacity engines, anything over 1040cc, they would go to 1200 odd cc with a spacer plate, they used wills rings (gas filled rings) to seal around the cylinders and thin head gaskets. I could never afford a motor like that (big money at the time), my Imp had a stock 875 Sport motor.
Back then you could also use oversize headgaskets.Measured in notches of thickness .Vauxhalls certainly on the 8 valvers.
Love these restoration episodes, please keep em coming!
Love the workshop tours and road trips most of all Harry's video's. Being on the other side of the world, to see the French and Italian and European sites, landmarks and the countries themselves, is well worth the watch. The workshops tours show the mad engineering that exists in Italian cars, and the extremely brilliant English engineering that keeps them going. Love it all. Thanks Harry.
While the engine and gearbox are out, always the best time to sort the carpets... Top tip, Gents. 😃
Ian and Craig and all of the chaps there are truly #artisans👏. Just wonderful .
What a wonderful video of one of my all time favorite cars, the immortal countach! As a child of the 80’s it’s so nice to see this beauty getting the full restoration it deserves. As you Brits like to say, “Pure class” Cheers from New Jersey USA 🇺🇸
Love seeing all the love and modern updates put into such a beautiful car
Two masters at work, thanks Harry, this was a joy to watch.
OH YES PLEASE.. thank you all for this video and for your work keeping these machines working.
Classic supercar ASMR, I can listen to those two experts for hours! Wonderful video 🙂
When two of your favs combine 😁👍 For people mechanical minded maybe you get more out of these but myself I’m absolutely one of the least mechanical minded you’ll meet but still love these and can follow what is going on. I just love the two of them get more out of restoration than something new. Harry is already on that Alps pass next summer describing to camera all the little niggles are gone and the car feels brilliant. 😉
I have been waiting in this update for months. Great to see everything is coming along.
Interesting, you talked about the small o-ring about the spacer on top of the cylinder..When I helped my uncle and grandfather rebuild the Continental engine on the Aroenca Champion, circa 1948, the head gasket to block "seal" about the cylinders, was a strand of silk !!! And it worked flawlessly !!
Excellent!! Great presentation, good old days engines.
Great Sunday stuff. Thanks guys.
Incredible as always, brilliant, thanks so much for sharing guys.
Harry, thank you for encouraging Iain to start his channel--- together these are two of the best automotive channels on youtube!
Nice 968 in the background!
That car will be even more epic when finished. Loving the progress!
Great stuff, love the glorious little details. Thanks to you both.
If youre new to this resto series, its worth going back to the first one to see Iain's face when he hears the noise coming out of the gearbox, and watching true craftsmen at work is always enjoyable
Yes, I still have my sucker and grinding paste(s) in my toolboxes from 50 years ago doing this job on valves for the first time.
Me too, although mine were also my father's and date from before WW2!
Another lovely video Harry, thanks for the update on Countach. Guess a nice drive next summer is in store
That’s another enthralling video to entertain me on a Sunday cheers Harry can’t wait to see it back on the road 👍🏻🏴
The Miura outclasses every Lambo that followed. Imho. Even the name, when spoken by an Italian. What a fascinating marque 👍🏼
Serdi is 100% the way to go on this rebuild Iain, for durable high performance valve seating.
Craig once again amazed me it's mind blowing how good he is how he brings the upholstery back to life is beyond genuis
Thanks Harry!
So satisfying watching real honest engineering.
Great video of fantastic workmanship love it.
Could hear the wheel bearing here in France.
The opening scene from Cannonball Run is still one of the best intros ever.
I wonder how many petrol heads have watched this and thought "I've got a tin of Chemico and a lapping tool in the garage!", myself included😂. Labour intensive yes but still very effective when done correctly👍 I always assumed rose joints were very strong and durable but maybe not or is it just down to water/dirt ingress and corrosion? When you've got the engine and gearbox out and stripped it makes no sense putting shabby carpets back in. Fab job👍
I should imagine rose joints aren't helped by the torque, huge width tyres and the state of UK roads. Bad enough with ball joints and drop links!
always great to see another video to watch.
Harry and Iain are a great combination, I always want a bit more on the visits though. Harry doing a walkabout on the cars that are in for work there each time would be great, love the range of cars Iain gets.
Iain does workshop updates on his own channel, but he's very busy so they are more occasional than regular
These two in the workshop I could listen to them all day.
My late father used to say,
" Every pleasure has its price" 😂
I used a pneumatic valve lapping tool 40 years ago. I think hand lapping is a bit of theater.
Proper craftsmen! - confirmed by the way they stand around drinking tea deliberating the next task while the carpets are discussed 😅
Thank you, Harry.
Zircotech for the WIN!
I recommended that to both Ian and Harry on separate occasions - not heard anyone else mention it before. SO glad they went for it.
Sowing through the original holes 😱
That’s class 😊
Thanks; great education from the segment and the comments.
Fantastic update!
Fantastic video as always, merci Harry!
finally waited for the update on the channel. thank you
What a privilege to be able to own and renovate a car like this...hope that Harry does...SURE he does and great he shares his fun with us
Really enjoyed this video Harry, very excited
Very few craftsman left in the world 👍👍👌👌perfection
Dang . It's a long process. Been waiting for an update. Thank you
KEEPING BRITS EMPLOYED. NICE WORK.
Yip, no communication issues in my garage either. I do boats.
Many moons ago when I lapped valves on my cars (those were the days!) I attached an electric drill to the valve stem and gently pulled. Worked a treat and much less effort and fiddle than a traditional sucker in a wooden shaft.
