  • There's another eighties supercar in my collection and it's a model I never knew existed until I spotted it a few weeks ago for sale at www.thehairpincompany.co.uk The 1989 Porsche 930 turbo S, of which only 33 were ever built.

Congratulations, Harry, and welcome back to the Porsche family.
The seats are what they called at that time „Sportsitze“ and they were stock on the turbo S but also available as an option for the rest of 911 bunch. I have them in my 30th anniversary 911 (964) from 1993 (Jubiläumsmodell), too. I think those were the last 911 cars (they really built 911 of them) that have these special seats. In the 993 model there were also „Sportsitze“ available as an option, but they were of a different kind. The RUF wheels were also available at that time as a „Sonderwunsch“ from the factory. In the early nineties Porsche changed the name of the „Sonderwunsch“ department into „Tequipment“.

@@harrysgarage Check the date stamps on the wheels. They either have or don't have stamps on the back side, depending on who manufactured them. I haven't had RUF Speedlines, but other RUF wheels, and the wheels had year, and month denoted by dots. Congrats on purchase. Cheers.

PS. I just texted Kerry and this was his response, "One problem - I have no recollection of ever having owned it and fortunately no one has asked - for some reason my name gets attached and maybe I did the importation and that would have my name on it." The other cars like the 935s and GT1, I've seen before and know Kerry's connection. However, this 930S is something he's never mentioned in the past. Stunning and rare example. Congrats for the find. Enjoy. Lovely video as well....thank you for sharing.

its always amazing how many rare, obscure, not-well-documented versions of these older cars were made/exist. nowadays with the internet and the ubiquitization of in-house tuning companies stuff like this just doesnt really happen anymore i feel like!

      @barbarusbloodshed6347 Před 2 lety +9

My wife's grandfather was the head mechanic at a giant garage here in Germany (they had 150 mechanics at one point!) and they were a Mercedes specialist and tuner long before Mercedes had the parnership with AMG.
According to him they built the strangest things. Many of the rich and famous clients had quite extravagant tastes... but that's the thing, all these cars were unique and built to an extremely high standard. Just as good as the factory would have done it.
On the one hand it's great that we have such high standards for our (regular, from-factory) cars nowadays, on the other hand it's a bit sad we now rarely individualize them.

This is a very special European iteration. As many have pointed out, the LE was a limited end of run delivery also, with a few different aesthetics at the same time. The obvious design difference (for no particular reason it seems) being the front spoiler, with the LE having long lateral vents as opposed to this S with the square mini 934 style chin, although both with integral oil coolers. I also believe Harry, if you even read these things, that you haven't picked up on the suggested principle difference for the S model, over and above the LE - that being an even greater output over the D66 LE / SE incarnations - with a further jump from the already hiked 330hp, up to a very impressive for the day 375hp; presumably to edge closer towards the more extreme (and not for everyone) DP / Gemballa deliveries of the same period. Lovely.

It will also have a stiffer wastegate spring to bring the boost up to a BAR compared with a normal 930 at .8 I believe. Those Rufs are period correct due to the stepped lips, later Rufs have smooth barrels. They'll either be 17/10 and 17/8 or some folks run a 17x9 up front. Seeing those Pirellis on the Ruf wheels in the opening shots reminded me of a question that always floats in my head: compared to reviews at the time, how much does a set of modern rubber improve them? Seems like the posted numbers were always slower than the power/weight ratio would indicate if it were a modern vehicle.
Oh, and that 'vestigial' exhaust outlet: love it! What an un-German thing to do on an otherwise extremely German car!

Of the many amazing exotics you have reviewed this is the one that just made me envious. Its a time machine that took me back to dreams of the late 80s. What a car!

Excellent and as always entertaining and informative video Harry. I think those wheels suit the car as does the red paint I’d forgotten what a fantastic noise/note comes from an air cooled 911 👍🏻

Lovely car! The Turbo S looks very similar in factory spec to the 1989 930 Turbo Limited Edition. Do you know what the differences are? My friends Dad was lucky enough to have an LE from new bought from Mann Island Porsche in Liverpool. Still my favourite car to this day. His was also guards red and had Fuchs alloys in a ‘creamy’ white, which might sound odd but looked fanbloomin-gorgeous!

Hi Harry, All German, I think LHD, cars of that era did not have a rear wiper as OE. It was however, offered as an option, which was not popular due to noise and as it did not clear the screen, due to lift. From memory, my two 930 4 speeds were much lighter than 1,350kg or so, my five speed felt much heavier. I'm not sure that the seats fitted to your car are OE? Didn't Ruf wheels have a much wider offset than OE, much lighter too, lower profile more modern tyres could be made to fit, that was their selling point then, which would explain the change? My first car was on fifteen inch rims with fifty profile tyres!

This car once belonged to Freisinger Motrorsport, FIA WEC N-GT Champions in 2002, 2003, 2004. Am I really the only one who recognizes Manfred Freisinger´s name??? Unbelievable...

Just stunning! I've always wanted an impact bumper 911 - a modest Carrera would do me, but they are now sliding further and further away sadly, price-wise. Very jealous Harry, enjoy!

I can't imagine the price of this car as it's perfect in my opinion .
At least it's one of the best examples on the road and he will improve price in future.
Got to admit I'm really jealous :)

Harry, at end of 930 production in 1989, they made run out editions for various markets. have a look for the UK 930 LE, these were 330bhp Slant nose spec with the regular upright Turbo front wings, 53 UK cars, 1 per dealer. This looks like like an overseas market equivalent? Personally I would source a set of Fuchs wheels.

I agree with you about the wheels. I don't much care for the fake exhaust either but I suppose that's how it was supplied from new.

Same engine upgrade at least. The strange thing is they stated so many technical modifications to the engine yet only claimed +30 hp or 10% up on original. I would guess the real number is higher than that.
